We recently drove through the WVA mountains on a trip back to Atlanta from Akron, OH. Very scenic drive. The Ody handled the mountains like a champ.

    Hi,

According to the trip computer, I am only getting 16 miles/gallon. Van is only about 700 miles.

Should I use supreme grade gasoline :>
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
You should use whatever type of gas is recommended by Toyota in your owner's manual.

Your engine is still green with only 700 miles on the odometer. Your mileage probably will go up as you get some miles on it. Trip computers aren't always all that accurate either.

    HAVE A '04 ODY EX-L

The following fuel economy readings were taken during a trip from Las Vegas, NV to Denver, CO, using only premium unleaded fuel and towing a 5'x9' open, ramp trailer rented from U-Haul, carrying a 1985 BMW K100RT motorcycle:

    -172.1 miles :: 12.9 gallons :: 13.341 MPG
    -250.3 miles :: 15.8 gallons :: 15.842 MPG
    -190.1 miles :: 14.5 gallons :: 13.110 MPG

In each instance, I stopped pumping when the pump made its first click and stopped, rather than continue pumping until I could no longer fill gasoline into the tank.

    mesincity,

I have a new Kia Sedona and my fuel mileage also goes to pot when I'm pulling our 19 foot boat.(2700 pounds).

Generally, I get 19-21 around town. We went to PA last spring and drove about 68mph (on cruise) and got a solid 27mpg. A/C on about 50% of the time. I was thrilled.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Towing kills your mileage. Just for reference, my Forester averages 25 mpg but last time I towed I got 17.7mpg, my worst tankful ever.

I was more efficient even off road, on the sand - 20.7 mpg.

So towing adds a huge load.

We get just a hair over 22MPG going 76-80MPH versus computer telling us 23-24MPG. If I slow down to 60-68MPH van gets much better efficiency. Very satisfied.

24.5 mpg pretty consitently now for the last few weeks!
  • bogdanbogdan Member Posts: 10
The first tank of gas produced about 18 MPG. This was mostly city-type driving, since I am trying to break in the engine gently and generally avoided highways.

Hopefully mileage will improve with more miles and more highway driving.
  • alexmishalexmish Member Posts: 47
Never got above 25mpg. Went from northern NJ to Toronto, and got 24mpg for mostly-highway driving. Although car was loaded with 4 people plus some bags for an overnight stay.

Hope my new 05Touring will fare better.
  • damnjettadamnjetta Member Posts: 1
Sticker told me 24 city...I get about 17 city. Not using AC (not a hot summer in Cleveland), not towing anything, get my oil changed and tires rotated and all i get is 17 lousy miles. this car sucks

That's pretty bad even if it's not a minivan. Maybe someone has some ideas over in the Volkswagen Jetta Owners: Problems & Solutions discussion.

Mileage on our 2000 Sienna CE has averaged 22.0 mpg for the first 60K miles. Driving is a mix of country, city and highway driving with a relatively light foot. Based in Massachusetts.

    This is interesting
Using the Sienna 04 LE 50/50 between city and highway averages 19.5 MPG (12 L/100 KM) calculated after fill ups from the pump.
The computer display shows a steady 21.3MPG which is far too optimistic.
What is the reason for such a big difference between ralphj2 95% highway and 27mpg, and me with 50/50 highway with 19.5mpg. Does the car need any adjustment of any sort
I have yet to test it under the same 95% highway conditions
  • dudleyrdudleyr Member Posts: 3,469
Driving on the highway is the difference.

Filled up my Ody 05 at Costco this morning. Here's the numbers
    miles 334.8
    gallons 16.229
    mpg = 20.6

These numbers are off the assumption that they really did give me a full tank of gas when I left the dealership.

I was kind of disappointed with the mpg. The driving was a combination of city and highway. About 190 of the miles were from the SJ-Monterey trip (highway). I REALLY hope things get better as the engine is broken in!

Consistently getting about 18 on 87 octane in mostly stop and go with A/C on. Florida summers can be quite hot. A bit better w/o A/C. Recent trip from Tampa, Florida area to Williamsburg, Virginia up I-95 and some associated side trips on the way back. Lowest was about 23 and highest was a bit over 27 on one tank! Not bad for 2 people and some luggage.

We got our 04 awd Sienna back from the dealer today. We're still getting about 16 mpg at 5000 miles, about 50/50 and lots of AC. Dealer says everything is fine and suggested a name brand gas(instead of Costco)and also said Toyota doesn't guaranty mpg. Any suggestions?
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Add a pound or two of air to the tires?

I wonder if it's just the A/C and the AWD that are hammering you that badly.

Maybe your cross-post over in the Problems board will turn something up.

My 99 Pontiac Montana gets a whopping 26.2 MPG all around driving. About 80% highway, 20% city. This is what the computer tells me, and I have checked it on 2 different tanks. It has 82,000 miles on it, uses 87 octane. I drive the speed limit, and keep tires properly inflated, use coasting, easy on the brakes, and not many jack rabbit starts.

My wife's venture gets 19 MPG in mixed suburban driving, nothing special, but a solid 25 MPG on the highway. The car has 20K miles, and the 25 MPG is year round.

Curious about mileage on 05 Ody w/VCM. Anybody realizing the 28 highway mpg as advertised? On what grade of gas?
  • matmechmatmech Member Posts: 12
On the last fill up averaged 23.3 mpg per tank. Mixed city (30%) and highway (70%). Filled with regular gasoline.
  • carzzzcarzzz Member Posts: 282
Just wondering have anyone tested/experimented on Higher Octane with yield a better mileage?
  • sportymonksportymonk Member Posts: 258
Thought Ody got better mileage than Pilot but from what I read here, it seems they ae about equal. Not sure which way I want to go. With gas at $2 per gallon, I thought the Ody would give better, rated at 22/28 I thought.
  • matmechmatmech Member Posts: 12
Gasoline of all grades have about the same energy content per gallon. Octane is basically a rating of how difficult gasoline is to detonate (preignite). An engine is most efficient using the octane it was designed for. Using high octane gasoline is an engine designed for regular can actually cause it to be less efficient and use more fuel. For instance in the 1990 Mazda actually issued a technical bulletin advising customer not to use high octane gasoline in the 626 because of drivability problems. Most small engines (lawnmower, snowblowers..) run terribly on high octane.

I picked up my 04 MPV LX and the mileage on my first couple tanks was poor. The first tank was about 1/3 long highway drive, 1/3 local highway driving (I live less than 1 mile from the highway entry/exit) and 1/3 city. We refilled it with the needle on empty and the warning light on at 330 miles - less than 17 mpg! The second tank is looking very similar. We are using the AC but 17 mpg is terrible considering the proportion of highway - I expected around 20 at least.

Does mileage get better once the engine breaks in a bit, will the van go a good distance once the needle indicates empty or do I have a problem?
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Some people get good mpg right from the start but I think most find it slowly creeps up, until the miles get up there. My van's mpg kept rising and didn't level off until we had 10,000 miles on it.

    Steve, Host
  • carzzzcarzzz Member Posts: 282
the needle indicator is mostly not as 100% accurate... so that in order to get the best mpg is to calculate the over all distance you travel over the total amount of gas you used!
For example, a better way to calculate is first filled up your tank to 100% full, then let say you travel 190 miles from this tank, then you go to gas station and refill it back to 100% full
    let's say you filled 10 Gallons,then 190/10=19mpg

just forget about the indicator for doing mpg! And 17 mpg is okay in which is hard to obtain the EPA rating!
  • craigmricraigmri Member Posts: 243
    Kotm14,

How many miles are on your Van? I would expect your mileage to improve a little once you get a few thousand miles on the odometer.

Be certain your tires are inflated correctly. Car dealers are notorious for under-inflating tires because it makes the vehicle ride super smooth for demo rides. This of course will hamper mileage.

I always inflate my tires closer to what the tire indicates. I know many people will not agree but for instance if my Tires say Max air pressure of 44psi I will inflate to 38 psi instead of the car makers recommendation of 32 psi.

I have had my van for 3 weeks and through 2 fillups it has averaged 16.5 and 15.5 mpg. This is city driving and I do live in a hilly area but it is worse than with the Acura MDX I just traded in. My old MDX actually averaged about 18 mpg with the same engine (3.5L V6) but since it had AWD and no VCM, I certainly expected an improvement with the new Odyssey.

The "range" of expected fuel efficiency on the sticker states 17-23 for in city driving. I sure hope it gets better than this.

My first tank filled by the dealer gave me 19.6mpg. Mostly city with a 200 mile trip from Houston to San Antonio. In SAT I filled up, did a lot of city driving, drove back to Houston mostly crusing at 75 but had some spurts up to 90. Then my wife used it to run around town until now with the tank nearly empty..so about 50-50 city/highway. Went 398.3 miles on 19.03 gals to give me 20.9 mpg. Leaving for Atlanta then St. Pete Friday for 2 weeks. Hope to see the mileage improve. Specs state that tank holds 21 gallons. The low fuel light still hadn't come on yet I put 19 gallons in it!

On my 2005 Odyessy EX-L the first half tank got 17 mpg, 70% highway. The second half tank got 25 mpg, 87% highway.

kotm: I agree with what the others said about gas mileage. One thing you can do is get a small notebook to keep track of your mileage. It's pretty simple. you need a milegae column, gas consumed (amount you pumped into the car), miles between fill up and MPG. i always put a date column to get a sense of how much driving I have been doing each month.

Also how many gallons did you put in that you only got less then 17 mpg. The tank on the MPV is 19.8 gallons. Were you on fumes when you filled up the MPV? Also Local and city drivng are the same. They both suck the gas out of yor car. (Read the small print under the city gas mileage rating. YOu can sometimes average only 12-13 in city driving). Also city driving in the winter time is even worst for gas consumption. 17 mpg is not that bad for an early tankful. I have a Nissan Quest with 14k miles on it and the gas mileage has steadily improved. we are at 19-20 overall with mixed driving now. Not too bad for such a big van.

    My 2002 MPV

In gebneral most of the cars sucks in stop and go or city driving. City driving here in Bay Area is bad, you might get better city MPG etc. in Salt Lake City. That said, MPV is not the greatest MPG car as you would expect from Japan, but it is American engine in it after all. That said, take a look at my MPG log and you will see, that better MPG is doable, what makes a big difference is the style of driving. Doesn't matter if you add 20-30% of the HGHWY driving, the city stop and go is a killer.

19.1 MPG 87 Octane in Minnesota
Tire pressure kept at 35 lbs.

I have had this car since 1993 when I paid $1000 for it. One owner before me. Doesn't burn any oil. Just keeps running. Good preventative maintenance. All receipts since 1993 for work on it average to $37. per month.

In the dead of winter, on snowy roads, with strictly stop and go city driving the worst I got was 15.25 MPG

Unfortunately I am going to replace this car with a new car.

I have tried 87 Octane vs 90 Octane in Minnesota and noticed no appreciable difference. The cars are easier to start when it is -10F which is nice. That's about it though for anything I've noticed.

2002 T&C LX has averaged 26.1 in overall driving since I got it as a used vehicle (mainly highway).
        2002 Chrysler T&C LX 3.3L V6 EPA 18 / 24
        2002 Kia Sedona LX or EX 3.5L V6 EPA 15 / 20

The Chrysler is larger, quieter, smoother riding, and gas mileage MUCH better than the Kia Sedona. Yes, for many people, they do need a Town & Country instead of the overweight, small interior, gas guzzling Kia Sedona.

I've had my 05 Odyssey EX for about a month and getting poor mileage as well. I've filled up twice and not even getting 15 mpg. Granted, most of this is city driving but this seems a little ridiculous. Hope it gets better.
  • carzzzcarzzz Member Posts: 282
Dont worry! Is only 2 tanks, you will do better after break-in!
I would say that your mileage is reasonable. It takes a great amount of energy to move a 2 tons van, from no speed to higher speed. EPA rating are not realistic in stop-and-go traffic!
  • hansiennahansienna Member Posts: 2,312
Take a round trip test drive of AT LEAST 200 miles on the interstate. Fill up the Odyssey before the test drive and then again after the test drive. A round trip of 2000 miles would provide a more accurate indication of your Odyssey fuel consumption.
Your 2005 Odyssey will deliver 26 or 27 MPG if you keep the speed under 75 MPH. If you drive about 65 MPH, you will get 29 or 30 MPG during a test drive of interstate driving only.
On the other hand, you get could as low as 9 or 10 MPG with city driving only...and have no reason for concern. Stop and go with time spent waiting at stop lights will kill gas mileage.

I just (last week) bought a 2001 Nissan Quest from a dealer. The vehicle has put 47K miles and is in great shape. It also has 6years/100K Nissan Power Terrain warranty.
What is shocking now is - the gas mileage.
It just gives an average 11.5 miles per gallon. The usage is 70% highway and 30% city. I could literally see the fuel tank gauge needle moving down when I drive the van. I am deeply disappointed with this. Got an appointment with the dealer next weekend to address the problem. Did any of you had similar problems or any pointers to fix this problem. All replies are appreciated.

My '99 Quest with 98,000 miles on it gets between 18 and 22 consistently, so you've got something wrong somewhere.

Well, since you said all replies are appreciated, I would say unless you live somewhere close to the North Pole... that is pretty poor gas mileage.Always start with the simpliest solution to solve any problem. Do you have any air in your tires? Seriously...if you are running on about 15 psi, you may not notice your tires are low...resulting in poor mpg.Clogged air filter? Leaking fuel? Got your emergency brake on? Maybe the station selling you gas is ripping you off? Hope this helps.

I live in Dallas, which is not a hilly area. The first tank was filled by the dealer and the second one was filled by myself in the same gas station where I fill my Corolla. In fact, I didn't use the A/C or heaters just to check the mileage. I am pretty sure about the tire pressure. I am keeping my fingers crossed to see what the dealer has to say.

Our T&C with under 5000 miles and with 4 passengers has been getting 28mpg highway when driving at 55mph and 25mpg when driving 70mph. Happy with the mpg and the van in general
