    Silyboy,
Is that 00S31, like zero zero S31, or is it OOS31 like in the letter O?

No rumor: Advance Trac also includes rear wheel disk brakes.

Still a rumor: rear seat cushion...does it split 60/40?

I picked up my car today from the shop. The knocking sound at idle is gone after they replaced the clutch, pressure plate and slave. All associated fluids were changed too. It still has a loud idle and when I lightly step on the gas while at idle when the car is in neutral and not pressing on any pedals I can produce a rat a tat tat sound. this occurs between idle and 1000 rpm.

I will wait and see how this develops. Besides, I will have to bring it again before my wheels fall off. I'll wait until I get the recall notice.

On the bright side: At least it isn't the front wheels that fall off!

The car is better, at least a little. The dealer did do their best too.

i wonder if it is possible that the poor behaving clutch caused additional strain to the engine or damaged the engine some how to create this rat a tat tat? I think it should purr like a kitten under these conditions. Still I have heard the zetec is not the smoothest engine in the world. Am I being too picky now? I am uncertain. That's why I am going to give it some time. I am somewhat happier about my z.

Still a great car. For new buyers: Buy a 2001 or a MY2000 that was built in August 00. You can tell by looking on the sticker of the driver's door! Good luck to all.

If it was me I would buy 2001!

Check out the "ford focus - three recalls" link at the bottom of the link listed in post 562 above. It says Ford has implemented the "Lincoln Commitment Special Handling" for all Ford Focus Owners. Dealers will pick up Focus at Home or work, leave off loaner, return your focus vacumned, washed and and with a full tank of gas. Wonder how some of these dealers will handle this?

ND and drebe, did you guys have anything to do with this?

thanks for the heads-up on the latest recall. if it turns out that this
recall is implemented , i am done forever with ford. i will trade my z
in a heartbeat.i will state here that those who have said i told you so,
were right and i couldnt be more wrong.this is absolutely the worst
news about the z that i could have heard. quite frankly, it is very dis-
couraging and any fond feelings i have for this car has turned sour.
i have been a very vocal supporter of this car and ford in general. this
is it for me,ive had enough and please accept my sincerest apologies to
the honda supporters who had it right. there is no excuse whatsoever
for such shoddy workmanship. this has been my very last purchase of a ford.

I've had my ZX3 Kona for about 2 months now and love it. Heard some people have trouble getting either the bike or the seat covers but I got mine on the same night I got the car. Drove home with the bike on the rack. I just love this car. It is dirt color. I haven't seen another Kona on the road. People are always staring and commenting on how cool it looks. It now has about 3000 miles and I have had no problems at all. Getting about 27 mph with mixed city and highway driving. This is a great car and I would recommend it to anyone.

I am very happy that I decided to get the automatic vs. manual transmission. I loved driving manual til my arm injury. Now I think that manual Z's have some major problems. I'm over 2000 miles and still get lots of good comments on the car and interest. I simply enjoy this car. Sorry some of you are having big problems, but some of it is due to it being a new model. If I hadn't needed a car fast I would have waited for the 2001's but, hopefully I will have a good experience. I still have the old Buick sitting in the driveway and today recieved the 6th notice of another recall from Buick. That makes 1 recall every year I have had the car. This one is for the engine that may become unclamped and suddenly drop out of the car.

please describe the seatcovers if you will. Do they come in different colors, what are they made of and are they washable? Don't know how much they are either but I could really use some covers for my non-kona! IF I can find them...

Sorry to hear about the recall and that some of you are discouraged or having problems. Maybe I'm just lucky (I don't think so but..) But I just wanted to restate for any potential buyers that many of us have had 10,000 trouble free miles, and hope for many more. I have not had a single recall and I love this car, which was CHEAP and is nearly perfect.

Are those covers attached to the wheels w/ disc brakes effective? Do they really stop the wheel from getting all black from brake dust?
Are there any detremental side effects to using these covers?
    TIA

Just got of the phone with Ford Customer Relationship and I am one of the lucky participants of the rear wheel bearing recall. Letters should go out to owners today dealers are in the process of getting the information.

So when you get your letter, call the dealer, wait for parts, schedule your appointment and in a matter of weeks you will have a safe car again unless your wheels have fallen off .... till the next recall

There has been a lot of talk about how some owners are bitterly disappointed about the latest recall. I understand that people are disappointed, but in the scheme of things, we should all be grateful that the consumer (us) is informed of potential problems. Back in the 60s and 70s this just did not happen and people were driving potential death traps.

I am not at all surprised about these recalls. Look at the Contour (another Euro design) and it must be the King of Recalls. Our MY2000 has had its fair share and it will have more without doubt. To allow these hiccups to upsetting is counterproductive.

This recall was not a quality issue, but a consistent manufacturing error. To vow off Ford for a manufacturing error is too harsh (imVHO--in my very humble opinion), besides, just wait till they bring the 2001 Mondeo to USA. You'll want to buy one.

Recalls always sound very ominous too. e.g. Steering wheel has the potential to fall off during Formula 1 style driving. (Escape)

    See what I mean?

For me, I just can't take a recall personally, I am just going to get it fixed. I hope Ford will give us a gift as compensation. (any word?)

    (Pretty simple guy, eh?)

IMO, these devices are a bad idea, as they limit cooling airflow to the brakes (yeah, I know, the makers of these things claim the contrary). If you hate blackened front wheels (and who doesn't?), you have two choices: Wash your wheels daily, or switch to dust-free aftermarket brake pads, like the EBC Kevlar pads mentioned here before.

    Norwaydoug,

    Well said!

Where would we be without Ralph Nader? And I still like the Corvair. Was ahead of its time and had some safety problems which could have been solved.

Still happy with my ZX3. Much happier that I was with the second generation Escort. Expect this sort of thing with first year model and the great thing is we are notified, generally speaking, before something bad happens.

Now if Ford implements the "Lincoln Commitment Special Handling" for the Focus Owners, I'll be really happy. Door to Door loaner car, vacumning, wash, and full tank of gas. What more can we ask for?

people must be getting used to seeing Zs on the road... I dont get nearly as many looks or comments as i did a month or so ago when ford shipped out a large quantity of Zs.... Anyways, I still love my car, for those of you new to here it's 2000MY Twilight Blue, ABS, power everything, RKE, Tilt/telescope/maplight, Auto, AC, and everything else minus side airbags.... im pushing 3500 miles, had to have my Mass Airflow sensor replaced a week after delivery, and had a slight problem w/ the gas gague that has not since repeated itself... I have added wind/rain guards to the car, and have many other projects planned for it including a bass setup w/ eq and power amp for the sterio, the full wings west body kit, window tint, exhaust system, and possibly more... but those are all a ways down the road... i think im gonna work on paying off the car before i start paying into the car. Congrats to all the new and future owners, you all made a great choice in buying or leasing a ZX3.

by the way... dont mind my horrid sentence structure...

one needs to take it personally if their vehicle
is affected. at least in the 50's ,60's+70's
there was more metal to protect the occupants
i am a survivor of one horrific accident where
a rear tire + front tire blew.i met a telephone
pole, real quick. i wont belabor the details.
however,a wheel coming off ,is serious
business. i dont sweat the nuisance recalls
but this one about the wheel, gets my head
    spinning.
