I think it will depend, as always, on availability
and demand. I do not have pricing yet only colors,
but don't look for any smokin' deals if this new look is well received. Basic supply/demand will
be the rule. Remember, the Passat is extremely
popular in Europe as well, and if they love this
new car even more, then inventories here will be
small, and then your best deal will probably be
    MSRP with no Dealer Mark-up.

I bid on a car through LiquidPrice.com. The was was a GLX for 750 over invoice. When I made the long trip (40 miles by transit) to get the car the dealer had written up my financing as a lease even though I had clearly specified that I wanted to purchase the car. It was though VW and the interest rate was about 8.25 so it wasn't that bad. Not only, that but I noticed that the car was not even a GLX. It was a GLS with the luxury package! Are VW dealers so dumb that they could be selling me the wrong model of Car, even though this was very clearly listed on the computer Bid?
Is this an honest mistake or was the dealer trying to rip me off on this? According to the lease terms the car had a $15000 resisual after 36 months. Does anybody have anything to compare this to? Needless to say, I did not buy the car but I wasted a whole day with this.

Hey all. I plan on buying a Passat GLX Wagon with 5speed manual (blue athricite/black leather)in about two-three months. Here's the kicker: Stopped by a dealer in Providence,RI today (will travel to make the right deal, just happen to be in RI right now) and, other than being generally standoffish, they stated that what they had was all they had, and no new passats until middle of next year because of restyling. So...since i have heard this mantra before with the 98/99 model year of passats, i have two questions:
Do i attempt a dealer locate in two months (early Jan) for the car i want?
    Or...
Do i place an order in two months for a 2002 as i want it?
(i have seen no info saying that 2002 is anything OTHER than a face lift...no new motor/tranny etc.)

Dealer just quoted me only $100. off MSRP for a 2001 silver/gray GLX with tip-trans, and a CD player at his cost of $400 installed. Says he won't have any more and it's not fair to the other salemen to do any better on this hot item. I walked away. But I do want it! Is that really the best deal?

I just got my GLX Black with Biege, for 500 over invoice and no additional charges, just tax and tags. i have to trace 150 miles to get it but i figure it will be a good shake down dirve for the car. 100 off MSRP sounds ridiculous to me i would not pay more than 750 over invoice, no matter what crap they give you. You may have to ravel for the car, but you should be able to get a better deal. If you are looking for a CD canger, buy it and intall it yourself. The passat is pre-wired, as far as i know it is plug and play. i plan on installing mine myself i will post how the instilation goes.

In addition to the facelift...only the doors and
roof unchanged...280HP W8 engine on board by late
    spring with 4MO standard...

As to current status, for the West Coast the last
vessel arrived from Emden with 1900 VW/Audi units
on board last till late Jan. 2001. I do not know
    what has come into Delaware.

You might want to go to VW.COM and go to the Dealer Locate section and see what comes up within a comfortable radius for you...PS

Despite the demand for a silver/black GLX,I was able to negotiate a deal $1000 under MSRP
($28810)for auto with tiptronic. This pretty close to Edmunds TMV. I paid $100 for 4 mud guards (installed), $350 for 6 CD changer from the VW dealers parts dept and installed myself.
I've owned the car 2 weeks and it is AWESOME.
I shopped around to 3 different dealers, all were within $100 and not one had A GLX silver /black on the lot. My dealer had one a pre order with an ETA 6weeks....came in 3weeks early.

I recently purchased a Passat in NJ. Before purchasing, I went to several VW dealers in NJ. I finally purchased the car at AC VW in Jersey City NJ. Please, do yourself a favor and stay clear of this one. This is by far the worst place. I have seen the manager who works here yell and shout at customers, I havn't seen this anywhere else. I guess the cars selling well, so these guys can get away with it and still stay in business.
  • vwguildvwguild Member Posts: 1,620
Hard cost West Coast...$25589. That includes
    Destination-$525, Port Prep-$117, and $350 for
    the CD. Hope this helps...
  • macbustermacbuster Member Posts: 14
should i even be concerned if the car has 5k miles on it.. and have them still charge me $200 over invoice???

they say that it's not "used" since it's never been registered.. but still.

Check out vwvortex.com for a preview of the next incarnation of the Passat--it's right on the front page. This new "facelifted" version will be coming in the spring (the next completely new model will arrive in about 2003/4). Be careful to note, however, that there will be some differences between what is offered for the Amer/Canadian Passat versus the European version.

Several key things for the Domestic model are:

**Base engine will be the same 1.8T engine, but with modifications that will bump output from 150 to 170hp.

**An 8-cylinder model will be available late in the year with all the bells and whistles--for 35K +.

**Structural rigidity has been slightlt improved (translation: slightly better handling and maybe a few less squeaks and rattles).

**There MAY be some new options available--perhaps High Intensity headlights, maybe rear side airbags, etc. These are rumors, but the actual specs should be available in a month or two.

**Since VW intends to break all sales records with this new version of Passat, there will be no shortage of availability (although the new models may not arrive on the exact date projected--sometimes VW of America experiences a slight delay).

**This final point means that, contrary to what VWGUILD suggests (remember, he is a VW dealer!), the new Passats will not NEED to be sold at sky high prices that allow dealers to pocket an even higher margin. But, don't think that will stop them from trying ;)

If the dealership put this Passat *in service*
correctly as a *Demo* then they can provide you
with a two part addition to your Protection Plus
    Warranty...This extended Warranty costs $180...
they will probably step for that...deals with most
of the 2yr/24K stuff...I am not sure of all of the
EXACT details; we don't have *demo* cars, and the
2nd part is strictly a paper provision extending
the 10/100k to provide you with that in it's
entirety. This Warranty info is available thru
the Service Dept. if the Sales people are unfamiliar.

I have serious doubts that a senior employee at
the Dealership would abuse a *Demo*. Typically it
is a *perk* for Management and not given to a 17
y/o detailer, and I am sure that they would allow you to take the car for an independent "check out" if you feel unfomfortable.

    Good point though about depreciation...If you plan to dump this car in a year or two or three;
you probably do not want to take this route. If,
on the other hand you plan on keeping the car for 5 or 6 years depreciation is rather a moot point.

If this car is a 2000, hard to believe, but none the less, it does, indeed, present an entirely
different set of issues. The numbers that I gave you earlier were for a 2001, which we have had for months. The 5K is the shut off for VW Credit; but let me know about that. There is incentive $$ that was paid to Dealers for 2000 product.
  • vwguildvwguild Member Posts: 1,620
Passat has had *Full Curtain Side AirBag Protection Systems* installed since August...at
    no charge...

The *market* sets prices, not Dealers or stores, the only exception to that principle, that
I am aware of, would be gasoline prices, and utility prices...

I'm shopping in New Jersey for a 2001 GLS 1.8 5spd, velour interior and no options. The best I've heard so far is $20700 and that includes dest. charge. From what i can tell this is about $625 over invoice.
Is this the best I'm gonna get?
  • vwguildvwguild Member Posts: 1,620
That's 3%...they ain't gonna retire on it...Are you comfortable with it, that is the main thing.
Have you been treated well? That's important too...

i'm thinking of buying a black passat - all options above and a cd player and monsoon sytem for $27,350. is this a good deal?
  • pkl1pkl1 Member Posts: 1
Am looking for opinions on fair pricing of a dealer demo maroon 2000 glx wagon (supposedly driven only by dealership owner) with close to 6k miles. The car looks perfect to me but I'm feeling swayed by the comments of those who believe the car should be sold well below invoice because it is used (despite the protestations of the dealer who considers it absolutely new). We've been offered a price a few hundred dollars above invoice (this without any hagggling), but to me it seems too high. We've looked on the dealer demo board and have read the responses to post 170 but are looking for more opinions from customers or dealers.
  • veedubberveedubber Member Posts: 1
I'm in the market for a Passat GLX w/5 spd. Right now the best price that I've found is $26,600, should I keep pushing for a better price or should I close the deal now?
  • snurplesnurple Member Posts: 130
If you can get the price down, this car could be a smart buy. But, it is always good to have options that you can present to the dealer, to make it clear that you are ready and willing to walk if he doesn't drop his INSANE claim that the car is "Brand New."

In addition to the above comments on this subject, I would be comparing the 2000 w/6K miles to:
the 2001 version (with standard full side-curtain airbags),
or to the 2001.5 (with a new look that will factor into the resale value).

Take a look at other nearby dealers, and do a quick negotiation on a 2001. I think that the difference between the first dealer's initial price for the 2000 and the prices you'll find for actual NEW vehicles at other dealers is closer than you might think. At that point the first dealer will drop their price and you will have a better choice: the new car at X$ and the USED car at Y$.

what's this protection plus and extended warranty???

and do you all feel it's something worth getting if i am to keep the passat for life??

the 2/24k warranty seems shorter than the 3/36k or 4/48k that others have out there.
  • vwguildvwguild Member Posts: 1,620
If your sales rep did not explain *Protection
Plus* then, shame on him...The following comes with the car:
    1. 2yr/24K B to B
    2. 2yr/24K Free Scheduled Maintenance...Both 1.8T
    and 30 Valve 6 @ 5K,10K,15K,20K.
    3. 2yr. 24/7/365 Roadside Assistance to the
    nearest VW Dealer.
    4. 2yr/24K Trip Interruption Protection, ie. If u
are over 100 miles from home;if something goes
wrong; you will be transported to the nearest
VW Dealer...if they cannot get you back on the
road the same day; you will be reimbursed for
up to $100 a day for meals, plus up to $100 a
day for lodging, plus up to $100 a day for
alternative transportation up to $500 a day
total. Some common sense applies here
obviously...the meter doesn't start until the
    Dealership is open...
    5. 12yr/Unlimited Mileage on outer body rust thru
    and Corrosion.
    6. 10yr/100K Powertrain..If it a lubricated part
that moves the car; it is covered.

This Warranty package was first introduced in 1995/1996 and certainly a lot has happened in the
interim...and there certainly is a great deal of
thought being given to expanding the B to B, but
nothing has been decided as of right now.

VWs Masterguard Plan is certainly something that
you might want to look into. You can basically take the B to B out as far as you would like, and
it is honored at any VW Dealer in the US or Canada.

VW appreciate all the help ur giving me!!! Come saturday i'll give u an update of the situation when i meet with the dealer. since i belong to the aaa vehicle purchasing program, i'm wondering if i can negotiate lower then the $200 he's charging me above invoice??

have u dealt with folks who belong to the aaa or costco program?? isn't there a no negotiation policy since it's pre-arranged?
  • vwguildvwguild Member Posts: 1,620
$200 over is a steal. Costco prices are published
with Costco and should be fixed...
  • ralcrsralcrs Member Posts: 5
Thanks for the tip on extending a demos warranty. I mentioned this to the dealer. They said they hadn't heard of it but checked anyway and ended up giving me 24000 miles in addition to the 6000 already on the car. You really helped out.
Additionally I bought the car, a GLS w/leather sunroof, and tiptronic for almost $2000 below invoice as it was a 2000 model. If that helps anyone.
    Thanks again.
  • macbustermacbuster Member Posts: 14
how much did u pay for the addt'l extended warranty on the demo??? that's awesome how u got 2k below invoice!!!! i'm gonna try to shoot for below invoice as well, since they're charging me 200 above on a car that's been driven 5000 miles.

but then again, there are shortages on the 2000 models now and the 2001 passats are limited as well since vw is rolling out their 2001.5 version in feb.
  • ralcrsralcrs Member Posts: 5
There is either $1100 or $1400 dealer holdback money they have to work with.Try mentioning that and the fact that they have already written off some value against taxes for demo use.
  • ralcrsralcrs Member Posts: 5
sorry I forgot to say they gave me the additional warranty for free
  • vwguildvwguild Member Posts: 1,620
    Holdback is 3%; not 7%
  • snurplesnurple Member Posts: 130
vwguild, in post #173 you mention that additional incentive money is being paid to dealers for 2000 models. Obviously, this can be added to the holdback as a way to understand how far below invoice the dealer "hard cost" actually is. This additional dealer profit may be contained within ralcrs's calculations. What exactly are these 2000 model year incentives that you are referring to?

And, in post #187, you mention that $200 over invoice is "a steal." Without knowing if you are referring to a specific auto or not (because of the brevity of your post), are you implying that $200 over invoice is "a steal" even for a demo with substantial mileage? If so, I would have to disagree--even if an additional warranty (to cover the extra 5 or 6K) is tossed in for free, the car is still a used vehicle and cannot be properly evaluated according to new car pricing standards.

And, mac, the fact that there is a shortage of 2000s because they are being replaced by new 2001 and upcoming 2001.5 models does not make the 2000s more valuable. To the contrary, because they are older, they are worth less. A 2000 will be worth less than a 2001 at resale in 1 year, in 2 years, in 5 years, in 10 years. A 2000 demo should be substantially cheaper than a good price on a 2001 (which would be less than a $1000 over invoice).

Can you wait until next year and negotiate a good deal on a 2001.5? If you do, we can work together on it!
  • snurplesnurple Member Posts: 130
vwguild, a question: Why are you completely ignoring the issue of the thousands of miles on the used vehicle under discussion?

As to supply and demand of Passats: Of course there is not an unlimited supply of Passats. But, if VW wants to continue to resurrect their brand by selling an increasing number of Passats next year (which IS their plan), you can bet that there will be enough to go around. Otherwise, people will take their business elsewhere. Which is also what people will do if VW dealers try to sell them at MSRP. You are right, the market will dictate the price.

I am looking for a Passat GLS with automatic, with leather, the luxury package and the monsoon system. Is it possible to get that for $21,000. Basically, engine power is not as important as luxury options to me. I want the base model, power wise, with as many options as possible. What should I walk into the dealership asking for?
  • snurplesnurple Member Posts: 130
Hmm...invoice for the model you describe is about $24,000. It might be tough to get a 2001 for $21K--perhaps you could get a 2000 with a couple hundred miles for $22-23K. Call a ton of dealers, see what they have, and make offers. The more options you have, the better. I have heard of people finding Passats in the really low 20s, but I don't think they had all of the options you are looking for.
  • macbustermacbuster Member Posts: 14
i appreciate both of your opinions on my dealer demo scenario. armed with this added knowledge, I'll waltz in this saturday prepared to get the fairest deal possible.

i'll be sure to report my watnots after my meeting with them.

Just purchased my Passat GLX w/4-Motion yesterday. Love it. Black/Black leather. Bought it for 4.15% over invoice costs. Feel like I got a decent deal on it. What do you all think?? Any words of wisdom are appreciated from those that have owned for a while now!

Hi Folks: I heard three rumors about the 2001.5 Passats:

1: They will be produced in six new (or re-vamped) colors such as less maroon (redder) reds, etc.

    2: The 4 cyl will generate 170 hp's.

3: They will be produced in sufficient numbers to make the dealers more prone to give good deals.

Are any of the rumors true?

For sell by owner wants $21,700 for a 1999 Passat fully loaded 24,000 miles (silver).
    Is this a good price?
  • vwguildvwguild Member Posts: 1,620
Try going to EDMUNDS.COM look under used cars,
    or to KBB.COM
After you have done that...take it to your local
VW Dealer and have them take a look...the Service
Dept. will charge you a nominal fee for this; so
only do this if you are REALLY interested in the
car...finally at CARFAX.COM found here under the
used section you can find out about the history
of the car for about $20. By the way the *Retail*
Price* from Kelley is where you start...subtract
$3000 from what they say and negotiate up from there...Good Luck...

The british Weekly, Auto Express has a report on the new Passat.

Check your local Barnes and Noble, the one on South Orange Blossom Trail in Orlando (@ the beeline) had a few copies left..

decided not to go for the dealer demo that had 5,800 miles on it . we actually came close to signing papers becuz he said he was going to give it to me for $1000 less than invoice price, but when i verified, he went back and said nope that's not what i said. at any rate, do dealers shred docs after they've written all my info (ss# and driver's lic) down?? or should i march back down and get the docs?

and.. am going for the y2k1gls model with v6. went to a few dealers, it seems none have just the bare bones with auto. most are with the luxury and monsoon package, which i don't mind getting, but don't necessarily need. shall i special order?? if so, will it cost me less? more?

    thoughts guys??
  • snurplesnurple Member Posts: 130
Oh well. Sounds like the dealer was not worthy of your business. On the whole, I think that you're better off looking elsewhere for a 2001, or waiting for a 2001.5.

I assume you mean "locating" rather than special ordering, since production on the 2001's has ceased to make way for the 2001.5's. Have you thought of using carsdirect.com (or other internet options) to search for you? They might be able to cover more ground more quickly than you can--and for a good price. Try this avenue before "settling", and paying more for options you have no use for.
  • vwguildvwguild Member Posts: 1,620
    I delivered a 2001 V6 GLS on Friday...Anthracite
with Grey Leather...no Sunroof, no Alloys. They
are out there you just need contact the Dealers
in your area and inquire. VW.COM has a dealer
locator...just put in your zip code and the # of
miles you will travel; it will send back all
data. And beginning on 11/20 VW.COM will roll out
an all new online buying service with all participating edealers...
  • macbustermacbuster Member Posts: 14
i called around and couldn't locate a glsv6 with just an auto as the option. perhaps i should wait till feb when they roll out the 2001.5 cars.

btw, lookin for an indiglo or blue anthracite.
