It's not the official name for _paint_, but if you ask anyone at a cosmetics counter for it, she'll know exactly what you mean. ;) Used to do theater, you pick up interesting things from the makeup folks.

Just wait till you get down to the Lower 48. You won't believe how clean the cars are down here. 99.9% of them look a thousand times better than 99.9% of the ones in AK do. And that's just the Karman Ghias; the Escorts will blow your mukluks off. (My OB is the .01% exception).

In your case, I'm not sure all these spiffy rides down here is a good thing! At least we don't have Cal :-)

I really should keep my truck, I mean is clean, clean, looks and drives like an 01 with 30k NOT a 94 with 137k and it needs -0-.

I just get so frustrated with it, parking is a pain in the butt, heck, just driving it is a pain in the butt.

Currently have my eye on a 95 Quest GXE with 123k on it. Told them to give me a call when its fixed (auto seatbelt motor). I dunno though, I could probably put my truck to good use as a second vehicle in Texas.

Really need a much better description.
Rust, underbody condition, was proper TIME related maintenance done, does everything work like new, interior condition, condition of the rubber under the hood, any fluid leaks.

If it is really in like new condition, all maintenance performed on time. Retail could see as high as $4000 IF you can find just the right buyer.

Typical condition of a little old lady car like that, puts it as needing all under hood rubber replaced, all fluids flushed out and re-filled, some under body or bubble rust starting to show, etc, makes it a $2000 at retail.

FYI on TIME maintenace regardless of miles, check the manual or other service recommendations.

Given the age, you really need to get the service records AND have the vehicle carefully inspected, especially all the fluids condition, the brake system, the internal engine ( at least get a good light and shine in the oil fill hole ), transmission fluid and condition.

    Hi Terry,

A friend of mine wants to purchase a Mercedes-Benz SLK230 Kompressor. There are two available that she likes.

    1) '98, 30K, Silver, black leather, auto, basic options. Not sure of asking price on this one.

    2) '99, 20K, Silver, black leather, auto, basic options. Asking $29,000.

My friend found these in the southern California desert. That's all of the info I have on these.

In your opinion, are SLK's good little cars? What is the general retail that you think would be reasonable? Let's assume these cars needed -0- and are deep in rubber, no nicks, no Micky D invasions ...etc, etc.

    Thanks. Mark156

They are completely right, there are tons of used cars available. Looking at what dealers are getting for the same car, $6500 to $7000 at RETAIL on a DEALER lot. ASKING dealer price, $7500 typical for that car. Most dealers will have to put a warranty with the car in order to sell it, it is a Chrysler product you know.

$4500 to $5000 trade or private party retail is about all the money if it is almost perfect condition. You have a 7 year old car. Miles are good. Reliability reputation is not so good (transmission for one).

    Hello,
I'm trying to figure out a fair offer for a 2003 land cruiser. 03 pricing info not yet available in used car prices.
This particular one has no options, 9000 mi., in reasonable condition, not immaculate. black in color. Zip 83702
It is Toyota certified. $49,995 is their asking price
    Thanks

I've got a Jetta GLS 1.8T with the Wolfsburg Edition, 6 disc changer, moonroof, s&r airbags. It's got 32k miles on it and is in perfect condition ( http://www.blue-guy.com/jetta.html ) I desperately need to unload this car but so far i'm not getting any legit calls. A dealer ship offered me 12k for it!

Anyone have any idea what I should realistically be able to get for this either private party or trade in? I've got it at 13,200, which is below KBB's price.
  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
You have probably already fiqured out that KBB prices mean very little right now, the used car market is flooded.

Your best bet is to sell/trade it in at a VW dealer. They will have the best chance of selling it used.

Most people who want a VW buy one from the dealer, new or certified. The average person looking at a $13K car needs to finance most of it, hence going to the dealer again who will arrange and handle getting the financing.
Assuming someone has $3,000 cash to put down, they would have to finance around $10K for 3 or 4 years, what kind of payment would that make? $250 to $290 a month.

In the current market, a $12K cash offer from the dealer was a good one. Especially if you have to unload it. At least you are in California which should help with the manual tranny. Here in the Midwest that would be an $10K car at retail because it would be hard to move, except at the few VW dealers.

Is the car detailed and showroom ready?
Have you considered getting the car inpected?
Have you considered having a loan institution appraise the car for loan value?
If you can 'help' with getting financing and have everything ready it is going to help your prospect of selling the car.
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249

Fully detailed and looks like new. Well it needs a bath on the outside now because i got it detailed 1 month ago and since then it's been sitting in my driveway. But the interior and wax are sparkling.

Have you considered getting the car inpected?
Have you considered having a loan institution appraise the car for loan value?

Inspected how? It's in perfect shape. It just had a 30k check up a few months ago and everything is top notch.

As for the loan thing, no I hadn't thought of that. I guess I'll just drive it over to a few VW dealers tomorrow and hope someone will give me over 12k for it. I'm taking a royal bath on this car but I despise every second I see it, sit in it, am near it. Before losing 1k was okay. I'm now at that point that losing 2k on it is just dandy. Just get rid of it!
  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
On a private party sale, it helps a lot to have a mechanical inspection report sitting on the front seat of the car along with all maintenance records. Not only does it make it easier to sell the car, but helps the potential buyer justify the purchase as a good deal. If the 30K maintenance included all kinds of regular inspections and maintenance, that is what you need.

In addition having a good loan value report on the car also helps justify the selling price in the buyers mind. It is all large purchase psychology.

I'm not sure why you would despise the car so. Maybe the result of a bad relationship (more common than you think)? In too deep on the payment end due to job changes/layoffs? etc. Then there is the question of what you will be driving.
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249

From the moment I brought the Jetta home it has been a problem - rattles, broken interior parts, engine coils, abs recall, weird electrical problems, etc. Additionally, the car's performance never really met my needs, dealer service at 5 different dealerships was always bad and I was stupid to buy a car with a cloth interior (something I dislike). Essentially, buying it was a mistake from the beginning. No more FWD cars, no more beam axle cars and certainly no more VWs. I just want it gone now and even if that means I'm short 2k on the payoff, I don't care. The first dealership next weekend that offers me 12.5k or near that gets my VW.

Thanks for the advice on the loan and maintenance stuff.

....... Except for the tires, super nice super clean ..?

These Grand Marquis's still do well, will run til' 150k+, still a big market for them ~ great road cars, except for those winter sports .. this is an LS with the leather, so trade side might see $7,5, with new sneakers might see $8,0 .. down Retail Rd, $9,9 in the paper and $9,5 gets a new garage ..

..... It's just that time of the year .. hey, 60/80 days ago I was shipping 4x4 Escapes, Burbs up north, now it's Sebring Converts and Sienna's .. go figure.

.... Sounds like a nice one .. right color anywhere, noooo miles, all the right stuff ..

But, we gotta little road burn going for us on the fender .. not being able to see it or feel it, so I will play the Devils advocate .. it's a tuff color to match and depending on the "shooter" and how well they did it's worth at least $21ish, probably $22ish trade side If it's "jam up perfect job" ..

Me personally, I would keep this dude .. it's clean, their in demand, it will always sell and as silly as it sounds, being a "new" bender when you first got it and all the records to go with, shouldn't hold up a quick retail sale for $24,5/$25,900 ~ especially since the new body style is kinda cold and isn't getting any real excitement ..

                          Terry.

    ....... Hey Bill, Happy 4th w/end ..

You say it's a clean one .. right color, miles are semi-low .. probably would see $21,0 on the trade side .. down Retail Rd I would be "asking" $24,9 and say bye bye at $23,5/$24,5 .. you gotta get the ego out of the way when you sell a personal vehicle, some of those sellers might have had their vehicle in ad's since May .. keep the vehicle priced below All the dealers in the area and if someone ask's you "are you negotiable .? ~ Yep you betcha, but you gotta see this one, it's clean" .. also keep in mind, there might only be a few TL's in your area, but that buyer might also be lookin' at an ES300, Audi, Bimmer, etc in that price range .. they might feel the vehicle down the street is worth an xtra $500 or the one 15 miles away is a better vehicle cuz' its priced $1,000 less with more miles .. so once things get "warmed up", ask.!

The best way to find out how your number is working is to start out maybe at $26 .. if you don't get but 1/2 calls in 5/7 days, then you are priced too high .. remember, you are lookin' for a "real deal buyer", not a talent contest winner ..

                            Terry :-)

XLT, 4.9L 6 cyl, 5-speed, 4x4, extended cab, dark green, short bed, 118,000 miles. Dealer is asking $5,900 or so. What do you think I could get this one for?

THANKS for the opinion on the low-mile '01 Lexus ES300. Your comment put my feelings in a nutshell, "the new body style is kinda cold and isn't getting any real excitement .." I know it's the fashion to raise the belt line, paint the cars same/same top to bottom, and make them look like a '51 Mercury; but, IMHO Lexus has turned a nice, conservative Swan into an overweight, overstyled Ugly Duckling. Think I'll keep the '01 a while. Thanks again.

    ...ooooh, my kinda truck.
However: Have it checked out really well (or "checked out good", to use the vernacular) with an eye towards seepage around the oil pan gasket.
That straight 6 is a wonderful engine, but if it leaks oil, you'll be dropping the pan for a new gasket, and in order to do that, the EXHAUST PIPE HAS TO COME OFF!!! Good Job, FoMoCo.
With a 10-year-old truck, a $10 gasket quickly turns into an $800 job.

Terry will tell you what it's "real value" is.

I can tell you that I'm done with old Ford trucks, since they have a nasty tendency to nickel-and-dime you. Plus, the pre-97s rust. Nice manly-man truck, but I think much over $4 and you're buying a fairly expensive set of wheels.

Okay ... looking at this to fill our newly found desire for a household truck.

    1997 Dodge Dakota Club Cab
    V6
    67,800 miles
    Cold AC
    Fog lights
    AM/FM Cassette

    Bad news:
    5-speed in Atlanta
Black over gray cloth in Atlanta and it's summertime

It's a very clean truck. No stains, no obvious exterior damage, good tires, no frame damage, and it runs smooth.

    What's a good price?
  • anonymouspostsanonymousposts Member Posts: 3,802
blueguy: I am shocked at your disdain for your Jetta. I thought you were in love with it and VW. But things change as problems mount I guess. If it's giving you that many problems then it's worth $2000 to get out of it though. What are you looking at as a replacement?
  • grogman1grogman1 Member Posts: 76
Terry - Thanks for the info on the Grand Marquis. I sincerely appericate it and I'll let you know how things go.
  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
Couple of things. Have it checked over very carefully. Three things: intake manifold gasket leaks oil into the intake (causes loss of power, uses very little oil, the almighty ping/engine knock) about a $500 repair job; Timing Chain tap/noise (Timing chain replacement required to make it go away) a minor tap when cold is pretty common and not a problem; Premature ball joint wear out (primarily lack of maintenance). Other than that an average reliability truck.

96's (old body style) like that up here (N.E Indiana) still bring $5000 at retail. $6000 for the 97 extended cabs, 6 cyl base configuration with air and a few select options.
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
What are you looking at as a replacement?

Already, made the replacement purchase. Yeah i know that's not bright but I was bewitched by a deal that was too nice to pass up. BMW 330i with the performance package. It's exactly what I've wanted from a car from the moment I started driving at age 10. I've had $600 in random damages to it (hit and run and a blown tire) within 2 months and yet I'm totally in love with every second I'm in the car. Shoulda bought one in 2001. My bad. My expensive mistake too. LOL

    Hello!

I have a 97 Jetta that is nickel and diming me so its time to trade it in and buy a new car. Last week, I just put $200 more into it and then the starter went.

The Kelly Blue book value for a trade in is ~$3000...if its running. Car is in fair to good condition. 82,000 miles. Will the car have any trade-in value if I decide not to fix the starter?? Or will they just subtract the repair cost from the trade-in value of the car? Or just I just bite the bullet, get the thing repaired, then trade it in...

Any advice would be appreciated since I am not well versed in these issues. Thanks in advance for your help!
  • anonymouspostsanonymousposts Member Posts: 3,802
A 330 is definitely a step up from your Jetta. Sucks about the mishaps though. Had an identical experience with my SI. First one was totalled (not my fault). Second one had a cracked windshield, a shopping cart rolled into the quarter panel the day before Thanksgiving, and it rolled down a hill twice leaving little marks in the front and rear bumper. Quickly traded it. I loved the car but it seemed like the car was cursed. Never before that have I had so many mishaps with one car and hopefully (knock on wood) it won't happen again.

We were given a trade value for our '98 Camry xle V6 at a dealership that was completely and solely based on KBB-he even did the website process with us standing right there. The "Trade in value" came up and he said that would be what they'd give us.

Is that normal? Honestly, we've never traded in a car before.

    thanks
  • thelthel Member Posts: 767
Most of the pros here will tell you that if your dealer is using a guide (whatever it is) as the sole criteria in determining the trade-in value of your car, they either don't know their stuff, or they are trying a weak technique in order to get more money out of you.

...and I don't mean stolen. It's emerald green (not my favorite, but hey), 32K miles, after market beige leather, haven't seen it but told by owner that it's like new (what else?), they did mention that it had a parking lot scrape fixed by dealer 20K ago. This is a private sale, original owner, asking $20.5K or bo. What would a dealer pay them to take it off their hands and stick it on the front row since this is an option their considering?

Also, how about an '01 Ody EX, gray/green (looks like pure dark gray to me but whatever), 38K miles, deep rubber, nothing extra, mats somewhat stained otherwise very good shape, at a dealer, one owner, asking $23K, what say you for reasonable wholesale/retail?

Maybe this will be the week... thanks as always.

It seems as though Dodge Intrepids are a dime a dozen... What's a fair price to pay for a 45,000 2000 Dodge Intrepid ES. Black w/ cloth,Auto, Locks, Cruise, Tilt, etc... Same Car, 1999 with 62,000 miles, same equipment? Detroit, Mich. Thanks!

I just had my car appraised (incorrectly) at Carmax and they lowballed me massively. They showed me an incorrect KBB printout and offered me below that amount. Gee guys, leave off close to 1k in standard features and then shoot me a price that's $300 below that?!!

Gonna hit the local VW dealers tomorrow. Two i called claimed they don't have any turbos and want one for resale. We'll see...

    .... Great description .. thanks.!

Perhaps you and Ghosh can do lunch, and you can show him hows it's done .. :)

Ok .. it's a 97, miles are low for the year, it's an ES, we got some leather, newer tires, sounds pretty clean, but no-sale green for color .. probably not a bad vehicle at all .. your area isn't any different from the rest of Florida, my Dad lives down the street from you in Ft Myers, and everyone is lookin' for a nice clean, Low miler, no-fade vehicles .. trade-side, you should be seeing the high $3,0's - "maybe" even $4,0 if it's a baby doll and needs -0- .. you will never see $5,5 on a trade, the super clean 40k ES's are only doing the low low $4's at the auctions ..

This should be a great vehicle for Retail Rd, nice detail, great 5 liner ad in the paper, $6,499 "asking" and drop-kick that dude for $4,9/$5,9 for the first "Cash O' Matic" .. the dealer wasn't off on the figures, black book is what most dealers use and can be very accurate -IF- you know how to read them.

                         Good luck ...

  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
..... It's a 99, the miles are a little tall for the year .. the Carfax is fine, the vehicle was sold at 4k (probably a demo) and the mileage change could be a dealer to dealer exchange, nothing new in the car biz ..

It's priced right, I would spend the extra money and have it checked out by a Volvo pro .. if all is well I would grab it .. retail prices are just that, Retail asking .. depending on the info source you can see all kinds of crazy prices, but it sounds like a $10,5 vehicle on the wholesale side and the dealer is lookin' to sell it ..

                       Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
..... Seems awful cheap .. grab the Vin# and check it through EXlax, I mean Carfax, also run the Vin# through Honda service at any Honda store and get a Honda pro to give it an eyeball .. if all is well, then that would be a Great buy .!

..... Color is good, miles are fine and the options are better .. if it's looks 03, no Swiss Army knives through the seats, no paint work - then trade side in and around the high $14's, maybe the low low $15's if it's super nice super clean ..

                            Terry.

..... A Bro-Ham .. if it's a real deal vehicle, no rust, no just sitting rot, probably a 5.7, cold air, everything works .. just a nice vehicle, kinda stored/garaged, new sneakers, stuff like that ~ it's worth "around" $1,5 on the dealer side, $3,0 on the retail side ..

The color is white with onyx interior.

It is very clean outside(a few scratches) and inside(I don't eat & drink inside). Current mileage is 49,900 miles. Tires are Goodyear A2s put on about a year/10K miles ago.

..... Whoopee, you did real good on that one ~ Real Good ...! .. it could have done an easy $6,9/$7,5 at the auctions ..

.... The miles are low for both, plus their S. Cal vehicles .. if all the service has been done, deep rubber, no 10lbs of bondo - Ya know, clean history and straight ones ..

The 98 is worth in and around the $20/$21ish range - a fair asking price would be $25ish .. the 99 $23ish, and on the retail side $27ish .. they are good vehicles and sell extremely well in the summer months .. just don't get that ugly no-sale blue, even Nuns won't buy those ..

    ..... 2 questions: where the heck is zipcode 83702 ... ?

And whats a base Land Cruiser .?

Anyway, you just moved .. you now live in Charlotte NC .. 9k, it's worth in and around the mid to high $44's, IF ~ it's clean, no Mcdonald invasions, etc, etc, etc ... down Retail Rd $48ish would be a good buy price ..

                          Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
... The color is kinda ok, the miles are a little on the stiff side, you have a few scratches here and there, Wolfsburg only means something to someone that's a VW head ..

You have it priced ok, but it's a handshaker, so that shrinks your buying market by 70/80% ~ they are hard too sell .. $12,0 from the dealer may be the way to go ...

                           Terry :)
