I'm currently shopping for a used sedan with leather and as much headroom as possible. I have these two options from 2 different dealers. Which (if any) appears to be the best value deal? Please keep in mind that I may look to sell in approximately 2 years and I will drive about 20,000 miles a year.

    Option #1:
    2000 Nissan Maxima GLE
includes rear spoiler - no other options(no sunroof)
Good condition certified used car(in-service date 7/16/01)
    only 30,000 miles
no service records, looks to be a previously leased vehicle. Bought at auction in Florida by my Ohio dealer. Carfax history report looks clean.
    Negotiated price is $16,900
advantages: GLE trim, Bose stereo, automatic climate control, dual power seats.

    Option #2:
    2003 Nissan Maxima SE
includes new after market Nissan leather, after market faux aluminum trim, new 3M clear-bra. No other options(no sunroof)
Good condition used car. Not certified but existing warranty in-service date 7/18/02
    26,000 miles
no service records, previously a rental vehicle. Bought at auction in Pennsylvania by my Ohio dealer. Carfax history report looks clean.
    Negotiated price is $19,982
advantages: sports suspension, 2003 model year(but high miles), HID headlights, 3.5L engine.

Please let me know your opinion. I have very few options as I am looking for a car sutible for driving clients yet without a sunroof (for more driver headroom).

    Thanks for the feedback,
    Drew

Everything is looking good on the Ody. I should be its new owner this time tomorrow. Like many others here I owe you a steak and a beer if ever you make it to my neck of the woods (Boston area). In fact, make that 2 steaks, one for the gullet and one for the eye.... fore ;-)

... It was funny.! .. I have a new set of Nike's with the new 400cc driver and we were playing on a course with Very narrow fairways, some are only 60/80ft wide til they open and I was "trying" to hook it for the dog leg .. a great wind-up, great swing, a great follow thru - and *BANG* .. then I thought I was in Australia playing with the aborigines with a boomerang .. til I kinda shook it off - about 3 holes away. :))

                Enjoy that Ody ..

..... That Philly, Cinci, Milwaukee area seem to get some strong money for those CR-V's .. it's an auto, 50k, AWD, 99 EX ~ normally I would say $10ish, I have a feeling if it's a nice one, more towards the ultra high $10's, low low $11's trade side ..

Down the golf path to Retail Rd, $13,900 in the paper and $12,5/$13,5 sends it off for a new hip replacement ..

No can do, must get rid of truck!! Actually if everything works out right I'll end up with a 97 Bravada with 65k on it. My truck and $1000 OTD.

The Jeep didn't work out, had too many issues, but it would have been cool, I would have had a vehicle and travel money......he was going to do the Jeep and $1100 in the *hip national bank* for the for my truck.

If I don't get rid of it by trading it for the Bravada I'll just give it back to the ex, let him deal with it. Its just too darn big for me to handle, I'm miserable, I cringe if I have to drive it. Kinda wish I had kept the Corolla.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
....... 8k, SE, we got a slider, color is good for the area, no hydes, so no bun warmers .. Bose ..?

A Semi strippy SE .. the high $17's, depending on the dealer, maybe the ultra low low $18's .. IF it's clean ..

  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
I would love to, but what the heck am I supposed to do? The truck won't make the trip, its falling apart. Guess I could just leave it here and find a junker when I get to Texas.
  • ghuletghulet Member Posts: 2,564
I'm thinking it will be cheaper, in the long run, to fly to TX, ship your belongings and buy a car once you arrive than drive the truck down (think how much gas that 454 is gonna use on that trip!). Best of luck whatever you do.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
    ..... Ok .. I give up .!

I called the FBI and they don't know .. I called the CIA, Secret Service, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Plumbers union even my friends at the Teamsters ... and none of them could tell me if this is an SE .. or .. an SLE ...... perhaps you can inform me, then we would both know ... uugh.

                      Terry.
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
Yup, that would be cheaper, unfortunatly I can't GIVE that truck away, nobody wants it. If I can work things out with the Bravada its a good deal for me, but if not, I'll leave the truck here and fly out. Won't have the $$$ to buy a vehicle when I get there, but I'll manage.

BTW, it would cost me approx $500 in gas to drive the 454, it gets 14 to 15 mpg on the highway.

    ..... Your welcome, I'm glad I could help ..

The GM at the Infiniti store will be smacking himself silly when he see's what he missed, most "I" dealers know and want them big time .. the G35 might be a little cheaper by then, but it's worth waiting for. I put 500 miles on one with all the stuff ~ just a great vehicle, Nissan/Infiniti is doing some great stuff right now .. also that FX35/45 is a "Bad Boy" ..

New to this board. I hope you can help me out with a fair value for this truck

1999 Dodge Ram 2500 Quad cab long bed
    5.9L Turbo Diesel
    42,400 miles
    Auto
    2wd
    SLT
    normal power equip cruise tilt
    cassete
    bedliner
    Green
    located in N. CA
    Thanks
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.... The miles are fine, the color is just ok, it's a 2wd (no help there) V6, got some help there, auto .. so if it's a nice one, no repaints, no Wal-mart wars, no Fuddruckers, no ice cream, no dog hairs, no watermelon seeds strune all over ~ then trade side you should be seeing the high $18's on a trade ..

                Good luck ...

                    Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... Your probably not aware of this, but you got some deep miles on this pup ..

If it looks, drives and feels like 50k, deep in rubber, then trade side you should be seeing $1,5/$2,000 .. take a golf cart down to Retail Rd, a super detail, get all the putter marks out and all the grass thats been in it since Hilton Head .. $3,9 in the paper and let some nice Caddie take it home for $2,5/$3,5 ..

                          Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
....... Good question, lotsa money down and they can stand a stiff payment ..

Right now interest rates are sooo cheap, that I find it almost silly that the manufacturers are doing 1.9/2.9 and 0% .. most lenders, especially Credit unions will do 3.9/4.9% on 00's and above ..

In my own stupid humble opinion rebates are wonderful, but not so wonderful enough to cover what happens when the vehicle hits the curb and it takes a $5/$7/$10,000 hit down the street .. as an example only ~ a new loaded V8 Lincoln LS is $45 grand, kick the rebate in and get a great deal over invoice and your looking at "around" $38 plus the TTL .. buy a pre-owned one with 5/9/11k and you should see one for $31ish .. I dunno, financing the negative equity on a new one would be my problem.

                          Terry :)

  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.... Well, it will depend on the color and the area .. lets say it's a light color and you live in Memphis ..

Miles are a little tall, but If it looks, smells, acts like a new one, then it's worth in and around the the $44's trade side, "might" "could" see $45,0 if it's "stone cold new" ... down the path, take a left to Retail Rd $49,5 in the paper and grab $47,5/$48,5 ..

This is another vehicle that get's Stupid Money .. I think they taught the Ody's their bad habits .l.o.l.. Clean 95's with 100k will still do $10,0 at any auction in the country ..

                            Terry.

Sorry I didn't give you all the info the first time. Here's the info:

    1999 Toyota Solara SE V6
    72,000 miles
    Red
    manual trans.
    JBL stereo w/CD player
    moonroof
    spoiler
    alloy wheels
    power driver's seat
    NO leather seats
    hood and front bumper repainted

This car is great, but if I can get a wonderful deal on the Acura CL-S and a decent trade-in, I might get rid of it. Thanks in advance for your help.

    SORRY TERRY---
The Tahoe is an LS, 2wd, third seat, power roof in excellent condition at a local South Florida Dealer. Color Gold with low miles. What do you think takes this one home. Dealer is at 22,900.

I'm looking to trade my car in buying either a Chrysler PT Cruiser or Mitsubishi Lancer (very different cars I know).

    1991 Honda Civic CRX HF
262,600 Miles (used as a commuter car, mostly HWY miles)
Hand-me-down from my father (the original owner)
    5-speed Manual
    White
    Good tires
    Clean interior
Driver-side seat has five-inch tear in upholstery
    Clean history (no major accidents/repairs)
    Runs well
    Transmission a little noisy
Good body (no dents/dings, a little rust on hood from road debris)
    Tires in good condition
Brand new Kenwood detachable face-plate stereo (although I would like to hold on to this if possible which would leave the car without a stereo)
    Pretty much stock everything

The car has been a wonderful car. Very cheap to drive and very little maintenance requred (other than scheduled maintenance and oil changes). Well cared for but the family is growing and the car isn't family/carseat friendly.

Edmunds says 14k, what do you think? New Millenium Silver, 80K, extras are towing, hood deflector, rear deflector. clean. thanks
  • jratcliffejratcliffe Member Posts: 233
Not one of the experts here, but I'll take a shot. I can't imagine a dealer having much interest in a car with 262k miles. KBB shows $540, Edmunds $350. You'll probably do better in retail. Guys, how'd I do?
  • ericd7ericd7 Member Posts: 2
    Terry,
The VW mentioned before is a GLS VR6...
leather, 39K, sunroof, auto, green, great condition, 6-disc cd, etc...it's essentially the GLX witout the wood trim and climate control (vs. A/C)

    Thanks
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
..... If it was MY money ..? .. no if's, but's about it - the 00 GLE, the miles are low, spoiler helps and it has all the toys (minus the slider) and the warranty .. $16,900 ..? more like $15,9/$16,5ish ..

The 03 SE, is a base SE with no slider and most are from the rental co's, it doesn't make em' bad, but I'm not in the business of putting vehicles together, I buy em' clean and straight, then sell em' fast .. lot's of rentals are running through the auctions - the dealer had to add leather, probably the keyless and mats .. plus the miles are waaay stiff for the year and at trade time this won't be a secret ..

I got rid of "the fleet" when I traded 'em for my new MDX.

The dealer was giving me the old "we'll wholesale all of 'em nobody wants used cars..." but I knew that the values you quoted me were VERY realistic ( some a bit higher lower or higher than kbb & edmunds TMV) and I was 'armed' with those printouts, YOUR advice and "appraisals" from CarMax.

I thank you, my oil stained driveway thanks you, and my wife thanks you (now she wants me to spend the money we "saved" on a more 'compact but highly polish' anniversery present!)

    ..... Ooooh, a "fat daddy freak" ..

Let's see here, it's a 3/4 ton, it's a 2wd Quad cab, it's a SLT with an auto and it has that 250k Cummins with only 42k used - Wow - and it's a long bed to go with ..! I'm getting chills here .. only a few of these around, this one isn't even broken in yet .. !

Trade side - depending on the dealer, in and around the $16's .. forget the dealer, if it's a clean one, run it thru a car wash, Big Ad in the biggest paper in your area for $19,900 and sell it in less than a week for $18,9/$19,5 .. only thing that could hold this one back is the no-sale green color, go get some real nice gold pin stripes.

Let me know on this one ...

                             Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.... Your welcome .! ~ I think ... this might cost you $5 grand for all that money you just saved .l.o.l.

  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
Dealer trade, -$100. Yes I said -$100. On a very good auction day they might get $100 for it, subtract all the paperwork costs and labor costs to get it to the auction, and well you see.

Retail road, maybe $500 if it runs good and has 50% tires.

I would just clean it up myself. Leave the stereo by all means if you want to sell the car. Put it in the yard with first $1000 cash takes it, put it in the paper with single one line ad. 1991 Civic CRX, First $1000, runs good, good tires. And see if you get any offers.

262,000 miles is just way too many to interest most anyone, especially with a 5 speed.
  • anonymouspostsanonymousposts Member Posts: 3,802
You'd be surprised with those CRX's. Here in Atlanta they are in demand .. even high mileage ones.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
..... Give me some good news here -- ok, it's a SE V6 with a slider and the right color ..

Bad news is: it's a 2dr, re-paint on the hood and fender, no hydes, miles are waaay stiff for the year and to top it off, it's a handshaker .. thank God it says Toyota on it or you would be in big poo poo .. .. trade side, in and around the high $6's, low $7's

               I hope this helps ....

    Terry,

I notice that you come down pretty hard on most vehicles that have a manual transmission? Is it that undesireable?

I guess Porche and S2000 type cars would be the exceptions? or not?

For those of us that own handshakers, when is the best age/mileage to look at selling these where they would not have such a disadvantage to their auto brethren?

    AJ
  • mirthmirth Member Posts: 1,212
It's not that manuals are undesirable, it's just that the percentage of drivers that can drive one is much smaller (and probably shrinking). So it'll take longer to sell one. So no matter what the age/mileage, it's going to go for less at the auctions than an auto with the same age/mileage.
  • butchbr73butchbr73 Member Posts: 325
its also has to do with the vast improvement of automatic tranny's in the past 10 years or so. There is not much difference these days between a manual and an auto... gas mileage, quickness, etc...
  • jratcliffejratcliffe Member Posts: 233

    Thanks Terry,
I just bought this truck private party for $16,700. Perfect except for needing front brakes which should be finished tommorow.

Guess I count myself lucky then because I have several offers from dealers for the CRX anywhere between $500 and $750. Not a whole lot but better than nothing.

    Thanks for the input.

...... Unless that dude was sitting right next to the last Shuttle launch and it's a little crispy right now, then you flat stole that puppy .. I'm calling the cops, you should be arrested .. hey drive it for a year or so, keep it nice and clean, you can always find a buyer for that one, especially early spring thru late fall ..

                 Nice going ..!

..... Ok FINALLY .. now we have some info to work with .. 39k, it's an auto, GLS, slider, leather and we got that darn no-sale green going for us ..

If it's knee deep in rubber, no I have another guy hanging thru my windshield stuff, Clean in and out with no science experiments .. then trade side, you should be seeing the high $10's (I don't remember where you live) maybe* the low low $11's if it's a puff or the low low $11's if they get stupid and think it's a GLX ..

                           Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... Nice vehicles .. great color for the southern half of the country, 2wd is fine at the Polo Club, miles are ultra low, we got the 3rd seat, slider and I'm sure dual hot and cold running air ..

If it's the 5.3/5.7 V8 (is this a Chevy store.?) they probably own it for the mid to high $18's, maybe $19,0 .. you should be able to snatch this one for in and around the $21ish figure ..

                           Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.... Waaaaaay tall in miles .. IF ALL the service has been done, looks and "shows" like a 98, runs strong, no bullet holes, no bears have used it as a sleeping bag, no rust, cold air, clutch is fine .. then trade side, you should be seeing a Nick ~ if it's super clean, super nice and you have been going to Church, you might be seeing $700 ..

I would like to trade my Durango in on a new 2003 Chevy Tahoe LS. Here are the specs on the Durango:
    1) 40000 miles
    2) Great shape
    3) Dark blue
    4) SLT Plus
Any ideas what this is worth towards the Tahoe ? Thanks in advance.

Hi Terry! Thanks for all your help in the past about different Boxsters I've come across. I went out to the Porsche delaer today to look at USED '03's but they only had autos. I did find a NEW '03 with minimal options that retailed at 49250 and he said he could give it away for 45000. I see the invoice is 42900 incl. destination. He of course said he was losing $$ on this deal but he'd do it because he has 50 boxsters sitting on their lot and needs to move them. Good deal? Wait for any incentives? I though of offering POLITELY 43500 take it or leave it. Any input? OR if this is not up your alley could you direct me to someone who has a better idea.

    thanks a ton

...... Your another one we need to find a better dating service for .. - 80k ..? she better be at least cute ...

Right color, it's a Limited, 2wd, tow pack .. are you a neighbor of George W. ~ if so, tell him I said Hi and he's doing a great job .. believe it or not, Edmunds isn't far off this puppy - wow - .. trade side, mid to high $13's .. "could" "might" see $14 if it's perfect, deep rubber, no paintwork, no Jesse James drama in the interior ...

                            Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.... There's nothing bad about them .. but as the others have said, the auto's are as fast, reliable and the gas mileage is almost a push - but most of all, this is a changing society and folks like convenience ..

So between reading the WSJ, talking on the friggin' cell phones, getting recipes from Mom, watching their kids throw Egg McMuffins at Traffic Cops, looking for a lost wedding ring and getting dressed - all at the same time, handshakers are almost passe' ..

Now don't misunderstand me, they still have a small dedicated market, second childhood, mid-life crisis, never had one when you went to school, wanna be cool (again) wanna be fast (until next years version comes out) save a few bucks in the payment for the kids, til' you hafta put on a tie and brush your teeth at the same time .. but the biggest inconvenience in a handshaker is, trying to sell/trade one when you need to .. the market diminishes by 75/80% and depending on the vehicle, the value can drop by $1,000 to $3,000 .. the days of the 4 speed GTO's and the push button automatics are over ...

                           Terry :-)
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
... It's a base with the 2.7 V6, cloth interior, color is ok, nothing too exciting here, miles are tall .. might have $6,5 in it, should be bought for $8ish .. but these are great road cars ..

                           Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
..... .. Your welcome :) .. Acura's are great vehicles and this one has the right color, miles are ok, we got a few extra's .. you know the routine by now, no kisses, no lunch bags, gotta be clean, new rubber ~ lookin' 20kish, feeeels and looks right .. trade side, in and around the high $15's low $16's .. a hop, skip and a jump down to Retail Rd, $18,9 in the paper and $17,5/$18,5 will get a new owner ..

The GS's are My most favored drivers, actually I'm driving one now, a 03 GS 430 .. runs on rails, quiet enough to put a Church mouse to bed in, and kick that dude at a On ramp, and you would swear that you have 400 horsey's .. nice vehicles, plus you can comfortably carry 4 nice cart bags .. ;-)

Personally the 300 and the 400 are both nice, the 430 has a few more dingles to dangle with and it's a little faster. I have driven' a ton of them, whats scary is: without looking, you would never know/feel the difference between one with 20k and one with 80k, unless some terrorist had it to shuttle nuclear reactors around with .. :)

01 Clean GS300's with 20kish are doing around that $27ish figure at the block .. 02's are doing "around" that $31ish zipcode .. the 01 430's are rolling around that $34ish figure ..

If you haven't yet driven one, drop your license off at a dealer and take one out for a couple of hrs, your roads, your hills, your mailboxes, you may like this one ~ or, you may not ..

                         I hope this helps ...

                             Terry.
