I'M NEEDING TO SELL MY GLX & IT HAS JUST UNDER 6K MILES ON IT. ITS IN EXCELLENT SHAPE & IS THE BLUE/GRAY COLOR. ITS ALSO HAS TINTED WINDOWS, MUD FLAPS, MOONROOF VISOR, PAINT & LEATHER SEALANT & PROTECTIVE UNDERCOATING. I LIVE IN OREGON & WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THE VALUE FOR TRADING IT IN VS. SELLING IT OUT RIGHT. THANK YOU!

Trailers and farm equipment do not count. I'm betting that you'll buy a different car by October 20th. Trucks and SUV's do count!

It'll be hard since you aren't allowed on the car lots.

...I was driving by a Ford dealer amongst the corn fields of rural Iowa this afternoon, and what should be in front of their used line but a 2000 Saab 9-5.
Terry, where would you peg this one, retail?

2000 Saab 9-5 (not an SE)
    2.3t, auto.
Silver over heated graphite leather. 52,xxx miles. VERY clean, but could use some new tires.

Drive it? Well, heck, yes, I drove it; how many Saabs do you find in the middle of RFD, Iowa? (Besides, the salesman said he was bored and didn't mind taking me out for a few, even though I said I was looking.)
    What say ye?
  • anonymouspostsanonymousposts Member Posts: 3,802
I know we just bought a couple of 2000 9-5's at the auction for $13,000-$14,000 with 30,XXX-ish miles.

    One more clarification needed.....

Buying a different car.....does that mean another one or one to replace the Explorer (meaning I get rid of it)?

Hehehe, I got $20 sayin' you guys lose.

I think they are talking either/or. I have faith in you that you'll last until at least Thanksgiving. :-)

    Hi Terry,

What should I pay a dealer for a 1998 Acura 2.3CL with AT and leather? (It looks like those were all the available options.) And it's that funky silver plum color.

It's got 75K miles and is in Wayne, NJ. Let's assume it's in average, clean condition, 'cause I haven't seen it.

    Thanks!

... What happened to the Celica ..?

I know exactly the color - "no Prom purple", the Accords had a similar color for a short time (real short) .. 2dr, old body style, yukky color, miles are ho-hum, 4 banger auto, leather, roof and wheels .. (this wasn't exactly Acura's claim to fame) ..

If this Prom queen is deep in rubber, service is 110%, no kisses, no re-paints, no Jack the Ripper interior, then the dealer might have the $6's in it, might have lost some $$ at the track and borrowed on it and has $7,0 in it .. on the retail side, $8,5ish would be all the Peso's on this one .. nobody is staying up late to figure how to buy these little darlin's ..

Ha. Thanks for asking. And for working on a Sunday ;)

Actually, I'm looking to simplify my life for a couple of years - I'm going back to school. So I'm selling my A4 and looking for some interesting but dependable transport and NO car payment. If people aren't clambering to buy a seemingly sound and reliable car like the 2.3CL, all better for guys like me, right? I'm also thinking about Integras and Infiniti G20s of the '98 '99 vintage.

But I'd rather have the Celica... :)

"I'm looking to simplify my life for a couple of years - I'm going back to school"
This is either a misconception of epic proportions, or you're just talking about your car situation.

-Mathias, who spent too long in school and isn't going back for nothing, nada, no way, not for nothing, and I don't care if it's a skydiving or SCUBA license am I going to ever sit in a classroom again or take another test. Not..gonna...happen...
There. I feel much better now.

Thanks for having faith in me.....hehehe.

I'm gonna have to last at least 10 more months, we need to pay on the loan for a year, trying to rebuild credit.

Although I do confess, we did look at the new Explorers yesterday......but the price tag was enough to make me like the one I have.

My hubby is pining for a new Dodge.....his Chevy is undergoing major repairs today.

Sooo, your thinkin' about buying it .?, you haven't bought it yet, right.? - I know it's a typo (meant 10/01) just bustin' your eggs .. but miles are miles, so unless you can get an eraser and rub out some of those numbers ... :)

    ....... I CAN HEAR YA FROM HERE ..! ..

Your probably in the same situation as your Jetta GLX VR6 brethren, expensive new, and now the dealers got some cash and big discounts going on, so you can buy new ones for $26ish .? .. trade side, in and around that $22ish zipcode depending on the dealer - down Retail Rd, $24,9 in the paper and grab $23,5/$24,5 (no sales tax spiff in Oregon, right.?) ..

                  I hope this helps ...

..... Good color, 52k, miles are tall for the year and it needs some round things ... if it's a clean one, good history, no "oh oh, it's Maaco" stuff, then the dealer might have the high $10's, low $11's in it ... ad a this and that and it might creep into the $12's, so figure you should be able to get this dude for somewhere in the high $14's, miles make a Huge difference in Saab's ... what's he asking ..?

                           Terry.
  • lancerfixerlancerfixer Member Posts: 1,284
$18,700. I think he's counting on the relative rarity of Saabs in the area. He forgets eBay and the Saab dealer in Iowa City, 1/2 hour away, I guess.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
..... I really don't know much about Iowa, I use to date a girl from Davenport about a thousand years ago, they probably even have lights and gas by now ... :)

Let's say he went Gonzo, let's say he put 25k money into a 50k vehicle (not a good idea .l.o.l.) .. like Anonymousposts mentioned, you can buy them for around that $13/$14ish range with miles in that 30k region and any dealer with an IQ of 75 would cut those puppies from the herd in a Nano Second for the $16's ... $18,7 .? makes for a nice "book report" .. kinda remember, Saab's have Never been known for the re-sale value, no-matter what any books say ... :)

                         Terry.
  • blckthreeblckthree Member Posts: 153
Cab is not a bad idea, but 55 miles a day just to work eats up a lot of miles, I can only imagine what cab fare would be.

Funny you should mention Davenport, I lived there forever before moving to OKC, add about two trips a year back there to the total, and 20K per year is the norm.

Not only do they have gas and lights now, they have riverboat gambling!

Darn, as much as I'd like you to fly to LA and kiss my butt for the crowd it looks like I was expecting too much money for the "Isunda" Passport at $10,000. I've spent some time in the Leasing discussion and seriously, I don't see how anyone can buy/lease a car without talking to you guys first. This is the best-kept secret in the automotive industry.

I'm still considering the G35, unfortunately I borrowed one over the weekend and the undercarriage realy scrapes when I pull it into my garage, with each cringe I say to myself that CAN'T be good. If I do decide to make the deal, I'll come back for kicks and grins and tell you how much they gave me for the Passport, although I expect it be just about what you said it will, oh Oh-Bi-Wan. So, in the words of our governor-elect (yet another cause to cringe), I'll be baaaack. Thanks again!

    Hi Everyone,

I am trying to find out what our car is worth. My wife and I bought this car last October before we found out we were going to have our 2nd child. Now, we really need something a little bigger, but have been unable to find out any values since it is a 2003. Before I start talking to any dealers or list it privately, I would like to have an idea of what it's worth. Here are the specs:

    2003 VW Passat GLS
    1.8L Turbo
    5 sp. Triptronic Auto
    Electronic Stability Program (ESP)
    Monsoon Stereo
    14,000 miles
    Maroon with Gray interior
    Perfect cond./no accidents
    Vehicle resides in NC

    Thanks for your help,
    Joe

I get a kick out of how much space kids today require. hard to believe that a family of 4 can't fit in a Passat. When I was a kid, the family car was a Volvo 144, probably about the size of a Passat, maybe a bit smaller (but it did have a big trunk). But, there were 3 kids, and we used to take driving vacations in the summer. No AC either, how did we survive.

Of course, my wife is looking at Sienna's because our Quest gets kinda full when we travel, and we only have 2 kids, so who am I to talk.

The VDub does sound nice though. Don't see too many red ones.

2020 Acura RDX tech SH-AWD, 2023 Maverick hybrid Lariat luxury package.

  • vondvond Member Posts: 8
They are actually decent sized, but with the size of carseats nowadays, it quickly becomes a 2 seater (of which one of the front seats cannot go all the way back). Not to mention all the crap we now have to take along with us when we have to travel anywhere.

Like you always say, Terry, buy what you like to drive. So, I decided against the no-sale green 2000 LX, in favor of the White color I really want. I found one out-of-state. Here are the numbers:

    1999 LX470, Pearl white/tan
66K miles, CPO (60K mile service done)
    new sneakers (OE-brand Michelin)
    all the toys
    in TX
$28,900 (OTD) + $500 for delivery to California.

What do you think ? BTW, since I have never bought a car from out of state, anything I need to worry about besides getting the car re-checked by an independent mechanic ?

Second Q for you: I just spent $100 for a full detail of my truck. Now I am considering if the $300 I am being quoted for buffing out the scratches and dings on the rear bumper of the truck would help its resale value ? FYI, here is the specs on my truck once again:

    2001 Toyota Sequoia, Silver, SR5 2WD
    44K miles
new sneakers (Michelin - one month old)
new brakes (Toyota TSB @ 35K miles)
leather seats (3 row seating), dual air
    power seats (driver+pass)
roof rack, running board, chrome wheels
    no towing, no moonroof
    in So Cal.

I am looking to pull the trigger on the LX soonest (this week, if all goes well). Your help, as always, is much appreciated.
  • lancerfixerlancerfixer Member Posts: 1,284
What's funny about that is that now that we've found out we're having a second child, we're looking at something to replace my wife's Accord coupe, and a Passat wagon is one of the contenders! How much stuff do you bring along with your kids, anyway? :-)

    I am thinking of getting 2000 v70r,
    Trading/selling
    1994 Silver Turbo wagon
    145000 miles
leather, sunroof, heated seats, roof rails, third seat.
have most records, did all factory service, timing belt done at 125K, dash ac unit replaced, small "squish" in right rear panel, new tires. waxed twice a year. Thanks in advance. (Should I get the rear panel fixed for about 300 dollars)
  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
Yes, you should get the squish fixed especially if it is only around $300.
Nice niche market car, but the miles are a bit tall even for the person looking for a Volvo and willing to pay top dollar, at least around here in the Midwest. You live in CA, per your Edmunds info? I cannot even guess the demand on the left coast. Around here, the Volvo dealer would be asking $8900ish for it, and would include at least a one year p/l warranty.

Hi. The dealer in northern Virginia only wants to give me $5000 for trading in my 1997 Integra LS 4-door. It's silver with gray cloth seats, automatic. It's only got 58k miles. (Short commute.) The paint's very good and it's very clean and cared for. Tires only have about 11k miles on them.

He says he has to put a lot into it because of the 60k mile sevice coming up. Does $5,000 seem low to you? Edmunds says $7791.

    TIA, Bill
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
....... As much as I like Volvo's, your in a little quandary here .. lot's of miles, service is ok, we need to fix that little kiss (squish), you need to spend a little cake and get a nice detail .. trade side, depending on the dealer you might be seeing in and around that $2,0ish figure .. next time you see this one, it will be on a transport heading for an auction ...

Me personally, I would send this pup down Retail Rd with a great ad and grab $5ish ..

You all are starting to give me feel guilty for complaining about the size of the Passat. Another reason that we are looking for the extra space is that we have visitors from out-of town quite often and are looking for something with 3rd row seating. My brother has a van and it is so convenient. Believe me, I am not exactly into minvans, but it is all about survival at this point and if it makes my life a little bit easier, I am all over it.

Terry, thanks for the info! I live in Raleigh which is about 20 minutes from Durham. The local media can't get enough of the Peterson trial... it is getting kinda old.

Lancerfixer, if you should seriously consider looking at other sedans. The Passat is a great car, but it is much more narrow than the other sedans (i.e. the accord & camry). It makes a big difference with 2 kids especially with carseats. There is absolutely no room for anything else in the back seat.

Thanks everyone for all your input,
    Joe
  • stebustebu Member Posts: 204
I'm not sure if you noticed, but Terry mistakenly id'd your Passat as a "handshaker" when he gave you the numbers. That means he thinks it has a manual transmission. Which also means he may... maybe... have discounted the value a tad. He's got a lot to deal with here so mistakes happens from time to time. We love him anyways. I'm thinking that given the discrepency, your car might be worth closer to his higher figure.

".. you must live in a real ritzy area, who's your neighbor, Oprah .?? .. "

Live in San Diego, which is fast becoming one of the more expensive cities in America. Sigh... Yes, we get gouged on virutally everything - taxes, gasoline, housing, food, etc. just about everything here on the left coast is expensive.

Thanks once again for your help. Much appreciated.
