been putting a lot of miles(relatively) on my explorer. taking a lot of long trips, plus trying to keep the miles off my wife's leased saab.
wasn't really looking for another vehicle, BUT(thats the mini-akagl part), been driving by a '93 lumina eurosport bring one of the kids to dance a few times a week.
it's busy street, so i couldn't see the anything on the for sale sign, at first, but i found a listing in the newspaper that matched a local phone# and the description of the car. listed a few weeks ago. has 100k miles, asking 3k. went by the for sale sign today , slow enough to see 'asking 2700' now.
car looks pristine (i mean really, really good)and straight(from 10 feet driving by), has a circa 93 plate on it, tires look tready, and there's no grass growing around them.
someone is driving and cleaning this car every day.
'assuming' no recent repaint or rebuild, what do you think?

Thanks to everyone who posted your thoughts. I appreciate your honesty, although it's definitely not what I wanted to hear, :(

Now I won't get so PO'd when they come up with a low number. I'm hoping to get a little something better for it since I'm only getting 1k under MSRP on the Sienna (and I'm lucky for that, lol!)

Terry might even be a little high on his estimate, but location can make a huge difference. Been seeing tons of 96 and 97's lately with 100K coming up. The less than pretty ones are bringing $2200-$2500. Better ones closer to $3000-$3500, even for a 97.

They are all dead on right about the transmission problems on these, especially if not properly and completely maintained. It is a $1600 rebuild repair at best, more at worst.

Carsdirect.com had this car listed. Called dealership and they claimed car doesn't exist. I didn't believe it so I called a second time. This time was told car was sold 1 month ago, lol ! Don't know which to believe. However, dealership called me back and *offered* me an '00 loaded (in Black, not my favorite color) with 45K miles, for $42,999. Said thanks, but no thanks.

    Guess my search continues....

Hi, I'm trying to trade in my Durango. The TMV from this site and the NADA Bluebook suggest that the trade in should be around $16,500 - $16,900. However, I've talked to two dealerships and they are both giving me figures 1,500 to 2,500 less. Mechanically and cosmetically the vehicle is in great shape so why is there such a big difference? Are they lowballing me or is real market value actually that low?
  • zueslewiszueslewis Member Posts: 2,353
but most Durangos have a $4500 rebate right now - the R/T doesn't. Make sure the dealer knows that the R/T package isn't just cool wheels and badges.

since every one here seems to like islands and want me off of it let me sing you a little island song. just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip, that started from this tropic port abourd this tiny ship. the mate was a mighty
sailing man, the skipper brave and sure, 5 passengers set sail that day on a 3 hour tour a 3 hour tour...sound effects thunder and lighning.........the weather started getting rough and the tiny ship was tossed, if not for the courage of the fearless crew the minow would be lost, the minow would be lost, the ships aground on the shore of this old deserted desert isle, with giligan, the skipper too, the millianaire, and his wife, the movie star, the professor and mary-ann here on giligans island.. thank you very much steve has left the building..........

....not to be the curmudgeon here, but can we at least attempt to stick to the TOPIC here? There's a reason people (including me) have had to post their cars two, three and four times in order to get values. We have way to much OT stuff here, too much cross talk, too much personal slamming, etc.

Please, let's post cars for 'Trade-In Values', and responses with answers and advice for same. Keep the other topics where they belong, and save personal cross talk for e-mail.

This has been a public service rant from ghulet, we now return to our regularly scheduled program, hopefully.

..... I had a feelin' .. like I said, dealers are paying $39/$40,0 for the the ultra cleans with 17/19/21k .. $43,0 for one with 45k .. ? a l i t t l e on the tall side, probably has $36,0 and some change in it, should be able to buy that one for $39ish, perhaps they "thought" you have a trade and this way they could show you a big overallowance ... ;-)

.... Good question .. most of the time, most of the folks end up blowing their own deal because of ego, they get their feelings hurt, KBB say's this, NADA say's that and they pump up the price and they feel they should get ALL the money, they don't know how to negotiate and of course, there's those famous last words ~ "I will just keep it instead of taking that kind of hit.!" -- oh, that's smart.! .l.o.l..

I also do a little boat peddling on the side, so here is a "yesterdays analogy" .. this particular customer has had his boat up for sale since March, paper ad's, ebay, online, fliers, national boat broker, etc .. he has had 3 hit's in 7 months, 1 offer for $12,0 less than what he is asking, so he asked me if I would take it on trade, of course and I offered him a figure that was $5,0 less than the original offer .. all I heard was, NADA say's it's worth XXXXX, BUC book say's it's worth XXXXX, it will loan XXXXX, I have $12,0 in electronics, etc, etc, etc.com .. "I will just keep it til' it Rot's, I will never take that kind of hit" ~ hmmm, sounds like a car deal .l.o.l.

Boats, just like cars seek their own level, the market is: "what someone will pay" Nada doesn't send you a check, Kbb doesn't buy vehicles and Edmunds' doesn't have a car lot ... if you have something for sale, pick a figure that you can live with AND, you have to be ~~ r e a s o n a b l e .. if not, don't waste your time or someones else's time and patience ...

                          Terry :)

.... I think he's more concerned on what they will give him, not what they can be bought for at the auctions .l.o.l.

Real money, it's worth "around" $27ish, maybe $28,0 on a push, miles kinda kill it .. "he should" be seeing the low low $30's from the insurance co, maybe more, maybe less - it depends on the insurance co, barometric pressure, Sun spots and the percentage of salmon that are running up river ...

As a general rule I do stay away from the car lots, but I would really like to buy that car back. Its a fairly good car that gets 30 mpg and I think I can get it cheap.

The guy is asking $3500.....but I'm working on him. He gave me $900 and put some money into it, so not sure what he'll sell it back to me for, hasn't given me a straight answer yet.

    Terry,

Assume there are two new cars:

    Car A: $27 k no options
    Car B: $31 k w/ popular option pkg

So the starting spread between the car values is $4k. In 3 years, what will the spread look like? If the Car A is at $16 k at that time, would Car B likely go for $18 k at that time (i.e., spread narrows to $2 k)? I am trying to figure out what the real cost of getting the popular option package will be. Is it also fair to assume over the long haul (6+ yrs), the spread is $1k or less?

My real-world case is trying to decide on a stripper, base RX-8 vs. the RX-8 with GT package.

    Thanks in advance!

    DT
  • mirthmirth Member Posts: 1,212
Not sure about the spread, but you also have to consider how easily and quickly you'll be able to sell it, not just the price you'll get.
  • jlawrence01jlawrence01 Member Posts: 1,757
The problem is that over the years, MOST people expect to have a chariot with ALL of the options -AT, air, power steering, brakes, and locks etc. I know that I am past the stage where I am going to get a car with only an AM radio and no other options.
  • dtran2149dtran2149 Member Posts: 81
mirth-fair point about ease of re-sale and would be even more important if the car was not totally paid off or it was a distressed situation.

jlawrence-the only difference in this case is mostly leather vs. cloth, moonroof, DSC, power seats, and xenon lights. Other things like air conditioning, CD,etc. are definitely in the base model. The base is $27 k so it's not an econo-box!

I guess the one additional factor is that I am a little concerned on buying a $30k+ Mazda. Don't get me wrong - the car is definitely a great value even at that price, but that perception may be in the minority vs. the majority of people. For instance, the typical person may compare the RX-8 against a fully loaded Acura TSX which is $27k and say the Acura is a better deal because they value less the sportiness and performance. The RX-8 may be an outlier in terms of Mazda depreciation (like the last generation RX-7), but I'm not sure I will have that visibility if I buy the car soon. I was thinking that buying the less expensive car which provides the same performance and decent amenities at a $20-something price point might make more sense as a hedged bet in the event of significant depreciation.
  • butchbr73butchbr73 Member Posts: 325
your correct... if your more concerned with resale value over anything, I would stick with the Acura's/Lexus, etc.... definately, if possible, don't skimp on the options... get one loaded, be much easier on the backend to unload.

but as Terry always says, drive what you like, don't be too concerned with depreciation, etc, as long as you have fun and enjoy driving it. If you can afford the $30k and like the rx-8 much better than the rest of them, I would go for it. You'll be sorry in the long run if you didn't.

Has all options except the security key. Both tops. Never been offroad. 5 speed manual / 6 cylinder. Trading it in on a 2003 Mazda6 at invoice plus $100. It also has a $2000 manufacturer to customer rebate. Any idea what I would be looking at for trade?

    ...... I can't believe this Acura is even still around .. isn't this deal about 300 post's back ..?

Anyway, you cant find *clean ultra low mileage vehicles, especially Acura's and those suckers will run til 200k++ (properly serviced) .. if you like it -buy it- if your still on the fence because it doesn't have a slider, the rear mat has a spot, or on a sunny day if you squint, tilt your head 27 degree's and hold your breath, you can see a paint scratch ~ then -don't buy it- your to darn picky .l.o.l..

I am NOT getting rid of the Explorer, sheesh, I just spent $850 for winter tires and alloy wheels.

The ONLY reason I am even THINKING about buying the Escort back is to save on gas and wear and tear on the Explorer. I drive 42 miles/day, 5 days a week, just taking my kids back and forth to the bus stop.....that's 2.8 gallons of gas per day in the Explorer.....or 1.4 gallons of gas in the Escort.

I also drive to Fairbanks once (sometimes twice) per week (that's 200 miles round trip.....13.3 gallons of gas in the Explorer or 6.7 gallons in the Escort).

I bought the Explorer July 12th and have put 8000 miles on it.....that's 41,600 miles per year.....don't ya think I could use an economy car too??

DMV fees are nothing.....$5.00 to switch one over or at the most $68 to register one for 2 years.

I know you guys are just razzing me.....but you are all gonna lose on your little pool....so ya might as well send me the money, lol.
  • lancerfixerlancerfixer Member Posts: 1,284
How many gallons of gas do you need to save by driving the Escort instead of the Exploder to make up for its purchase price?

Let's do a little math here. You're going to save approximately ~1.5 gallons of gas per day for, let's say, 180 days out of the year the kids are in school (assuming all you're doing is shlepping the kids to the bus stop...holy CRAP, that's a long ways to catch a bus...but I digress.) So, you're saving 270 gallons of gas per year, let's say at a price of, say, $1.75 per gallon. So, you're saving $472.50 per year by driving the Escort instead of the Explorer. Let's assume you can pick up the Escort for $3,000. It would take you over six years to break even, Jolie. Even if you drove that route every day of the year, (or if you want to account for the weekly trips to Fairbanks,)you're still looking at about three years to reach a break-even point, and that's BEFORE stuff like tires, insurance, maintenance, etc. for two vehicles.

    The lesson from this?

    Stay

    Off

    The

    Car

    Lots.

  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
Is that 10/20 for the sale of the Explorer?? Not gonna happen.....I just bought $850 worth of winter tires and alloy wheels, can't afford to get rid of the Explorer now.

Lancer.....I can get the Escort back for approx $1200, so the break even point is 2.5 years and yes, that's a long time. Didn't say I had bought it, just was thinking about it. The guy actually wants to trade me the car for my arabian mare that I've got for sale, lol.
  • lancerfixerlancerfixer Member Posts: 1,284

  • blockislandguyblockislandguy Member Posts: 336
Terry, so there's no halo effect? That is to say shouldn't a great car, but a stripped great car move quickly because of just the name? Take a base BMW X5 w/o the basic options of premium package (leather, wood, roof) and with a stick shift. The initial price will be about 8k less. Wouldn't this move like mach snell two years down the road if you asked say 4k under what an X5 with the 8K in basic options was selling for? And make more money on it than if you had bought and were trying to unload an X5 with the above packages (premium and auto)?

Or take a 5 Series BMW. I have to think, but I'll defer to you, that a used 528 (6 cylinder engine) will have a higher percentage resale than a V8 530 or the ultra expensive, 540?

Sure some vehicles without certain options (say Fourmatic on a M-B in MN) just won't sell. But, I would think that a minimally equipped hot brand would sell quickly and well.
