Back today. It looks great, can't really tell that anything was done except for the fact it doesn't have its factory stripe on the passenger side......waiting for it to come in, its on backorder. Its such a relief to have a quality body shop to use.

No overspray that I could find, they totally detailed the truck for me, including getting the road tar off of it from the summer road construction season.

Glad you got it back! Now try to drive out from under the black cloud that apparently follows your vehicles around.... :-)

What kind of trade should I expect for a 2002 VW Passat GLS 1.8T wagon with 27,000 miles. It is silver with gray interior. It has all available options - leather, heated seats, auto trans, alloys, sunroof, monsoon stereo, steering wheel radio controls, homelink. It is in great condition with all maintenance done and has a new set of tires. I am in Birmingham, AL.

    Thanks

I am the original owner of a 2002 Mazda Tribute ES model. This SUV has all options to include pwr sunroof and 6 cd player, leather, etc. It has 31,000 miles. It is in excellent condition inside and out. Not a scratch to be seen. Factory aluminum wheels. Tires are in great shape. All maint. records. What do you feel is a good trade in value for this vehicle. The color is two tone white/beige with beige interior. I live in Orlando, FL. Thanks.

Was that a 2001 Quad cab or Club cab. Dodge names them a bit different so please help us out so we don't have to look it up.

Does it have the four regular doors on it with the almost usable 5 foot bed or just the extended cab with the 6.5 foot bed on it?

The 5 speed and miles are killing you. Thinking $12K-$14K (depends on which variation) asking on the retail side for either one. Feel free to check dealer asking prices for same vehicle in your area and reduce your asking price by around $2000 or more. Realize that at that price many of the people interested in that truck will need financing, not being a dealer will hurt on that one.

$8K trade might be a little low, but it is a 5 speed and that limits the resale market to about 15% of the truck buying public. At least more people looking for a truck seem to know how to drive a manual tranny.

FYI another local dealer had a 2002 Four door totally loaded Dakota like yours, but automatic (no 4wd), and 7,000 miles go for just under $16K recently.
  • slick300slick300 Member Posts: 6
    for the reply.

It is a Quad cab, 4 full doors just over 5 foot bed. I know, its too bad that I do so much driving and just personally prefer a manual (save $1000 on purchase, give up three or four times that when selling).

Again, thanks for the info, I really appreciate it.
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,822
"[..] but it is a 5 speed and that limits the resale market to about 15% of the truck buying public."

And that's in your market area. Here in mid-MI, that number would be 5% or less.

And that's from a guy who prefers manual trannies. On a 4cyl mini-truck, that's okay; with a V8, forget it.

Of course, there's a dude who's selling (or not selling, so far) a 1995 GMC Sierra XCab with 150k miles or so. It's got a 305 V8 and a 5sp, and he's asking, I forget, $8k or so. "Must see to appreciate."

    Just for reference...

It has been my experience that more people looking to buy a truck actually know how to drive a manual tranny over the general public looking to buy a car or something to drive.

If someone want to actually use a truck as a truck for hauling heavy loads and towing, they are better off with a manual tranny for long term reliability and better control over pulling the load.

I wouldn't sweat it though. I am sure the dealers in his area know the market for manual tranny vehicles and trucks better than anyone else.

His 4 door super short bed truck is going to be a tough one to sell though. As a truck, it is limited by the small bed. As daily tranportation it has a limited market due to the manual tranny. With the high miles it just does not have much going for it for resale.

Why trade it in or sell it?

Dakota Quad Cab by slick300 Oct 20, 2003 (11:54 pm)
First, thanks to all involved in making this topic so helpful and informative...

Now on with the show...upstate NY
    2001 Dakota Quad Cab Sport
    68k mostly H-way (i know, it hurts)
4.7L V8, 4WD, 5sp manual (the other nail in the coffin)
Buckets, Sports Plus Group (air, fogs, alarm, 16" alloys (full spare), tilt, cruise, O/H console w/garage door opener/computer, PW, PL, keyless, autodim rearview, heated-power side views, 4 wheel ABS, Infinity speakers, bedliner, ARE locking fiberglass lid) all papers, all sched maint, no repairs, new tires @50K, very clean

         ___________

Whoa, $8,0 .... ? this must be one rough ol' truck .. yes it has Tons of miles for the year and it's a handshaker .. but it's also a 4x4 Sport quad V8 - so unless this thing has been shot at and hit, been visiting Maaco, has had a few love affairs with the Wal-Mart employee's and the surrounding poles, then it's gotta be worth ALL of the $10's on a trade, the ones with 100k can do $8,0 .... --- $8. ? you need to shop around .l.o.l..

..... These are kinda of funny little critters, kinda all dressed up and no place to go .. I have seen dealers step up and pay some healthy money for them, then 15 minutes later they won't pay anything ... it's a handshaker, miles save it, we got some extra tires going on, down Retail Rd $9,900 asking, and grab $8,9/$9,5 ....

My brother in law has a truck that he's got someone on the hook for, and is curious on what he should ask.

Details--'97 S10 4x2, standard cab, regular bed. Has 2.2 4 cylinder, 5 speed, no AC. Only options are an aftermarket stereo and a bedliner. It's got 80K on it, and other than the hiccup below, is in decent shape (no rust, good paint). Truck is silver with a gray interior. Located in southern CT.

The hiccup: A neighbor backed into it by the gas cap (i.e. left side of bed wall) and dented it last week--neigbor's insurance paid $1800 for the damage (I have not seen it, but bro-in-law says they said they'd replace a panel and the estimate seemed high to him). Truck has no rust and this is the first large damage it's incurred (other than the usual scratches and such).

I told him that he's got 3 strikes (no AC, 4 cylinder, 5 speed) against him for a trade (even with the repaired dent), so it's good someone my sister works with is looking for a second vehicle, semi-beater truck to replace a rust bucket truck he has.

He plans on turning the insurance money plus the purchase price into a downpayment on a newer 4x4 truck (needs 4x4 and more power).

Potential buyer doesn't care about the dent and probably won't have it fixed if my bro-in-law doesn't.

I thought maybe he should ask $2000-2500. Is that reasonable for him and the buyer? And I assume I am right on the complete and and utter un-tradability of this truck?

....... I dunno, you got some miles going on here, we got the wheels and wing, gotta be nice and clean, no kisses, no freedom fry's, no lipstick marks on the headliner .. :) .. trade side, depending on where you live, you should be seeing in and around the high $12's low $13's ...

                  Good luck ...

........ Yep there you are, "Located in southern CT." ...

I think you are right on the $$ .. if it didn't have that little kiss ($1,800, wow!) and it was a 2wd straight 97 80k vehicle, he would probably see $2,0/$2,5 on a trade and $4,0/$4,9 down Retail Rd .. now is the time in CT to pass a no breeze vehicle, so it works out the same or even a little better for him -- $1,800 + $2,500 ..... yep, that dog will hunt .!

                         Great description, Thanks.!

I hear ya on my Dakota. No bulletholes, no Maaco. No work needed other than oil changes every (and I mean every) 3k (all done at dealer), and scheduled maintenance (all done at the dealer), no benders, no accidents, fully detailed 2-3x/yr, I even keep the engine compartment spotless, heck even the bed is carpeted!

Any guess on what I could sell it for (also have gold package bumper to bumper extended warranty to 100k miles through AAA which is transferrable)?

    Thanks!

Super clean job, service records sitting on the front seat, Great 5 liner ad in the biggest paper in your area ~ $12,9 "asking" and grab the first $11,5/$12,5 - the warranty is a saviour and the miles and the meat clever are not going to be your friends here, so bear with it ..

Good luck and let me know ..

    Learned Friends,

I saw an ad in the paper today for a '99 Tacoma, 5sp, $5995. So I thought, sounds like a good winter beater, and went to look at it.

It's a 2wd reg cab, black, 68k, with AC and power steering and not a whole lot else; kinda the Taliban special, if you get my drift. Bedliner, good shape overall, brakes are terribly grabby and squeak, probably from sitting around in the rain. Window sticker still reads an optimistic "$7995". A faint smell in the interior with matching coffee stain in the middle of the bench seat. Apparently never smoked in, no dogs, nothing too bad. With a seat cover, it could be considered "clean" on a stretch. The tires are "ok" but before the snow, I'd prolly put two new ones in the rear, just in case.

All books and original window sticker are there, but of course the book isn't stamped. ugh.
Did the usual checks; bolt heads, panel alignment, vin stickers: Looks accident-free.
No junk in the tail pipe, dipstick clean, valve train "looks" clean through the filler hole; no leaks that I could find, seems to be a pretty "together" little truck.

I wrote down the VIN (1st owner leased, 2nd owner bought, no negatives reported), shook hands, and left, and was promptly chased by the used-car manager. $5 if I take it right now, he said, so I asked him to write it on the back of his business card, which he did.

I'm thinking I might get this puppy checked out out.

But what's it really worth at auction, and what should it retail for?
    Snow in the forecast Thursday...

    Long-windedly yours,
    -Mathias
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,822
Terry pegged it at $3-3,5 wholesale, if "service is 110%".

It's a '97 no-sale green "value package" Accord with 108k miles. One owner, in pretty good shape, but no power accessories.

Needs timing belt, and being a Honda, it NEEDS the timing belt.
Needs tires, at least in rear.
Other than that, not a bad car.

Asking $7 -- A few calls, no interest.
    Asking $6,5 -- A few more calls.
    Asking $5,5 -- Deafening silence.
Asking $4,9 -- Phone rings off the hook, 4 people come by that evening, next day it's gone for $4,700.

Tires, timing belt, and wah-lah: $5,300 for a seven-year old car with an "okay" service history and a ton of miles.

But it's another real-world data point, so I thought I'd share.

I have a 2002 Subaru Silver WRX Sedan. Perfect condition as it has been garaged last two years and rarely driven. No dings, scratches. Only 11,500 Miles. 5spd, factory alarm package and rear differential protector only factory add-ons.

I have added on my own a two-tone leather interior(graphite with dove center) and upgraded stereo(Rockford Fosgate head unit, speakers).

Car is located in Fairfax, VA outside Washington, DC.

I would appreciate any feedback on possible trade-in values I could expect.

    -Thank You, Joe

How are you? seems like you have been a little busy.
We need one of those special favors from you, it's a relative that's trying to trade a 96 Olds Aurora in, it has 45k, black with gray heated leather seats, auto, chrome wheels, 4 new tires at 38k, V8, bose cd, climate control, moon roof, tract ctrl, power everything, she bought it new in 97 and has done all the service to the book. It's very clean, keeps it garaged, she has babied this. Dealer is thinking $3,500, $4,000, she is thinking of shooting the dealer, what say you?

    Again, thanks in advance!
    M.
  • anonymouspostsanonymousposts Member Posts: 3,802
Don't shoot the dealer just yet. The car itself isn't bad but any Oldsmobile will be a dog at trade in time. Especially an 8 year old one. I would recommend private party. Someone will appreciate it but it will not be a dealer.
  • jlawrence01jlawrence01 Member Posts: 1,757
Most dealers do not want to deal with a car that old, regardless of the condition.

To me, it sounds like a $6k car (and a car that I would be interested in if I needed one) on the retail side for a dealer. You might get more than the dealer if you sell it yourself.

Do realize that you are going to be hurt by the Oldsmobile name. A lot of people seem to think that they won't be able to get parts for the vehicle (even though they are manufactured by GM).

I don't mean to be a smart-aleck BUT ... if the car is in such great shape, why are they so all fired ready to get rid of it. A car with that kind of miles that has been taken good care of will last 12-15 years with minimal expense.

Just my 0.02. (and an owner of a '96 Oldsmobile).

I have 1995 Buick Regal Custom 4D Sedan.I has been hit once and the repair job on the paint doesn't match on the right front quarter panel - dang silver paint. The car has 115,000 miles on it, but the last 30K are on a Jasper rebuilt engine from 3 yrs ago.

I was wondering what advice some of you may have as to whether to trade it in, sell it myself, or have it painted at MAACO before putting it on the market. Also what can I expect to get for it before and after a paint job.

    Thank for your help.
  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
FYI we'd be asking $7500 retail for it due to the low miles and it would not last long if really nice. Then again the credit challenged customers really like cars like that one.

$4000 trade is about right. Being that it is a clean one, if the dealer knows they have a ready market for it, maybe mid to high $4K's.

That is one car that many times will develop lot rot on some dealers lots, while other dealers have no trouble moving them.

I'm with JL on this one. That is one great driving car and well taken car off will last a long time. Why do they want to get rid of it?
  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
$2000 retail BEFORE a crappy MAACO paint job, $1500 AFTER a typical MAACO paint job.

Face it, even if everything works it is still a $2000 car. It has already had one blown engine (you MUST disclose this to any buyer). It has also been in an accident (another one that must be disclosed, although they should see it).

BTW if your insurance company paid for the job, many of them guarantee the body work for the life of the car if you still have insurance with them. In addition if it was another persons fault, you need to contact the insurance company again. What about the life time warranty from the body shop (if they had it).

If you cannot get anywhere with the insurance company or shop that fixed the car before, put in an ad: 95 Buick Regal, good running car, everything works, maintenance up to date, $2900 obo. Have all records ready on the front seat, deep in tires, maintenance up to date, ready to drive home with the first offer over $2K. Start deducting if things don't work, $1000 less if the A/C is out of order, rust, poor tires, any problems at all, torn seats, etc.

OK Guys need some help. I've go a silver 2000 Audi A4 in CA. It has the 1.8 turbo engine with the 5 speed manual transmission and Quattro. Options include the convenience package (sunroof, homelink, auto dimming lights) and cold weather package( ski sack, heated seats). The car has 101,000 miles. Overall condition of the car is good. Clean title and body is in good condition. New tires and runs good. Only thing the car needs is a new windshield current one has a crack. I went to a CARMAX yesterday to see how much they would give me. Their appraisal for my caw as $8,500.00 Too low in my opinion. I want to trade in my car for an Infinity G35 coup. What is a realistic trade in value. Thanks for all your help.

My wife realized the only way she would get out of her '97 Aurora w/ 94k miles (non-working AC) was to make it unsafe to drive. She dislodged the exhaust by backing into a metal maintenace grate.

Our local Lincoln dealer offered $4K in September 2002 (Acura offered the same but the Olds dealer made no offer). This September I shamed him into offering $5500 (he left a bad impression last year). We paid high-end retail for a Lincoln LS but I couldn't imagine selling my wife's POS Aurora for more than $3K.

Where are you getting yor facts from when you state a seller MUST disclose a replacement engine?

I've never heard of such a thing.
  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
Not to mention the laws regarding the selling of a used car vary widely from state to state.

Both a major body damage or replacement of a major part of the car with a rebuilt can be grounds for fraud and deceit of not giving full disclosure. I have seen buyers win more than once when they find out a transmission or engine was replaced with a rebuilt before sale and later caused problems.

If the seller were to have all maintenance records and repairs available for the buyer and left out the engine replacement, you better believe there could be a problem for misrepresentation.

Some people will look at the rebuilt Jasper engine as a plus, others as a minus.

Face it, on a car that at best is worth $2500, is it really worth the possible hassle if the buyer finds out later it was a rebuilt engine and would not have bought the car? IMHO it is not.

A super clean and detail, service records, a great ad would send this down Retail Rd, $2,900 "asking" and send it packing for $2,0/$2,500 ...

Looking at getting either a 03 or 04 Nissan Murano, SL model with leather, 2 WD.

Might be trading a 98 Forester L, Auto, AC, AM/FM? cassette, cargo compartment cover. 70,000 on the clock.
Brakes and tires within 5K miles, no dents, dings or scratches. It's probably only spent 30 nights outside in its life.

I never like to trade but we live 40 miles from a city, small town, lots of retirees with money so I'm not sure how the used car market is.

Any ideas on trade in value, or should I just advertise it here and in Austin.

    Thanks

    Hi there,

We've got an interesting situation with a couple of different options and I was hoping for some advice.

My spouse and I have an Audi and a Jeep Wrangler, and want to sell both of them and lease one SUV. I take the bus to work and he works from home, no kids, so leasing is a good option for us. We're considering leasing a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee or a 2004 Toyota 4Runner for 3 yrs, 12k miles per year.

Question is this -- what to trade in? The Audi is a 1999.5 A4 1.8TQ. 88.5k miles, exc. maintenance, new t-belt, tires, battery. No accidents, one tiny dent. And we owe $12k on it. Jeep Wrangler is a '97 sport, 60k miles, good condition. We owe $6k on it.

Have been trying to sell Audi private party, slow process so far as everyone's financing seems to fall through...would love to move forward on this quickly.

    Thanks for any advice!

Hi, Terry, posted this earlier in the year but decided to hold off on the new car until now. So, I'd like to get an update on what kind of trade-in value I could expect from my 2000 Accord SE. Miles are about 77k. Color is "Naples gold" (metallic beige) with ivory cloth interior, 4-cyl., auto., ABS, security, cruise, CD, alloys. Two minor accidents, bumped once from behind and once on one of the rear doors, both repaired. Otherwise the exterior is in good shape. Interior is close to perfect, no kids, no smoke. New tires, new brakes. Full service records. I'm in the Boston area. Thanks for your help.

    Hello.
Please help me.I am in LA area.
I am trying to buy a new car for ''News Paper Ads Price'' and trade in my mini van.
It is 96 Plymouth Grand Voyager SE, 83k miles with 3.3L V6, PW, PDL, Rear Air, ABS, after market CD and speakers, Privacy Glass, Roof Rack.

One sales guy said it will be $2500 to $3000, but another guy at the dealer saw my NJ inspection sticker and told me that since it was from New Jersey (I moved from New Jersey in 2001), it will worth much less than that.
Condition wise, I sometimes have to turn the key several times to start the car. Also, I lost original keys and have only valet key left. Other than those, I think it looks clean and the condition is not too bad for a 96.

I really really appreciate if you would tell me how much this car will worth so that I can deal with dealers better. Thank you for your help !
