Well, I decided to trade the Regal in. I got a trade-in of $2770 (a highball figure I know). We still got the 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe with 8300 miles my wife wanted for the low end of the blue book at $15995 which was $3000 less than the dealer's original asking price. All in all, I think we turned a good deal. Thanks for your help everyone.

In September I bought a LS8 for the wife. The price was kinda sux (too embarassed to admit) but we got an outrageous trade-in (the aformentioned $5500 Aurora with 100K and falling apart). Now I see prices on eBay that make me wanna cry. I really feel for you guys that paid retail (new or used).

you're right - the only way to hook up one of those is certified used - one year old V8s with the sport package are available for $20-22K (wholesale).

Cool cars, fun to drive, excellent alternative to a BMW 5-series, Cadillac STS, etc, but like most high-line domestics, they take a huge hit on resale.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,344
local non-dealer used car "superstore" (very good reputation) has a 2002 V8 in their current ad. About 21k miles, asking (IIRC) about $21,995.

Of course, with all the discounts and rebates, you might be able to get a leftover 2003 for less than 30K, even though sticker must be at least 40.

    Hello out there...

I live in the northeast and I'm looking to trade in my 2002 Saab 9-3 SE with 15,000 miles. One dealer offered me $15,500 which I thought was ridiculous--way under book value. I'm sure everyone says this, but the car really is in excellent condition. Any thoughts on what would be a fair trade? Thanks.

A new truck is sounding a little too good right now.

We are going on week 2 with hubby's truck in the shop.

Terry needs more info!! You will be sent to your room if you don't have more info!!

    Auto/Manual?
    What state are you in?
    Interior/Exterior color?
Specific options ( leather, sunroof for example?)

Don't take it personally, just trying to help :)
  • lancerfixerlancerfixer Member Posts: 1,284
$15,500 for a 9-3 on trade? I'm no pro, but I've been watching used Saab prices carefully, and I'd say the offer is more than fair. Saabs have notoriously low resale value (which is why I'm watching them...they're a screaming deal on the used market.) However, I'll defer to the expertise of Terry...it'd help him to know (as the previous poster mentioned) the tranny, location, color, is it a 3 or 5 door, or maybe a convertible...?

I've learned two very important things hanging around here:

    1. Throw the book away.
    2. Especially for Saabs.

    Edit:
    3. Jags, too.

Hey terry, need some help with this one. my buddy owes like 14k on this bad boy and he kinda wants out of it, so we are seeing what to do....

    Here are the stats
    2002 Ford Ranger Edge 2wd Xcab(2door ver.)
    automatic, cruise control, A/C, ABS
24k miles, black in Portland OR
    1-2 minor door dings
    Spray in bedliner.

What do you think this bad boy is worth? We are hoping for like 9-10(maybe).

....... Good morning Windy .. miles are Semi low for the year, it's an L, auto, it seems like you have been taking care of it ... Austin is a little different than Boston , the yankee folks go psycho over these ... trade side, in and around the $5's ...

Down Retail Rd, a great detail, super ad, in the paper for $7,900 "asking" and sing "All my ex's live in Texas" at $6,5/$7,5 ..

Let me know on this one, I'm interested on what it will do in the land of the "Longhorns" ...

    Thanks Terry....

Duncan........we have a small, short term payment on the Explorer, will be paid off in the spring. Only thing that's causing me to think about a new truck is because our Chevy is costing us a ton of money, not only in repairs, but in down time, its our business truck. Hubby hasn't been able to get to his jobsite and its gonna start to hurt the ole' wallet if he doesn't get there soon.

Found this at a local used car dealer & would like to get your opinion on it:

2001 Honda Accord EX V6 4 dr sedan
    38.5K miles
Silver over gray leather, auto trans.
All the EX stuff including moonroof, pwr seats, 6 disc CD with cass, alloy wheels, etc... no nav system (not sure if it was available in 01 model)
    4 New tires
    located in Pittsburgh PA

Dealer is asking $18,988... What do you think?

    Thank you

you raise the practical side of the new vs. used arguement. You can do spreadsheets until you are blue in the face to "prove" that keeping the old car is "cheaper", but you also have to consider the impact of having a car in the shop all the time.

But look at the bright side: pretty soon, you will run out of parts to replace on the Chevy.

98 Sienna LE, great "mechanical" condition, 88k miles.
Clean, needs to be buffed out a little:

(My wife hit a deer with it on the freeway yesterday. She's fine.)

    Now what?

    Hi,

I'm not sure how long to wait, but I didn't see a response yet, and we're planning on test-driving this Sat.

Here's the info I gave previously on the two vehicles. I realized I left some important things out so I added more info:

My spouse and I have an Audi and a Jeep Wrangler, and want to sell both of them and lease one SUV...

We live near Boulder, Colorado and would be trading it in in the Boulder/Denver area.

    1999.5 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro
    Manual Transmission
    Silver with beige interior
    88.5k miles
    New t-belt, water pump, tensioner
    New Toyo Alll-season tires
    New International battery
New rear brakes, needs front brakes done
    No accidents, one tiny dent
    Owe $12k on it

    '97 Jeep Wrangler Sport
    White, tan interior
    Manual Transmission
    No accidents, good/exc. condition
    60k miles
    Owe $6k on it

Here are my questions -- is it possible/advisable to trade in BOTH vehicles? Or would you recommend trading in one and trying to sell the other private party? I know we'd be underwater on the Audi but not on the Wrangler (checked trade in values on Edmunds already), BUT the Audi has been very difficult to sell private party and our payments are much higher. Lots of factors to consider and I would sincerely appreciate ANY insight. THANKS!!!! and sorry this post is so long.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,344
Bummer about the accident, but the pictures do show the sturctural integrity of the Toyota. Doesn't look like any impact to the passenger compartment.

What the heck, throw on a new fender and grill, patch the radiator, and you're good for another 100K!

Sorry guys, I'm new to this. Here's the info...

    Automatic
    Rhode Island
    Hazelnut metallic/beige
    5 door
    power sunroof
    alloy wheels/premium tires
leather & cloth (25th anniversary edition...)
    power driver seat

What are the books good for if we should throw them away? If Saabs have poor resale value it should be reflected in nada, kelly blue book, etc. That information must take into account some historical data. I just don't like the idea of someone making a bundle of $$ at my expense. I want a fair deal for all parties. Thanks for your help!
  • galantigalanti Member Posts: 2
I suspect this is a car that I would have to pay the dealer to take, but I figure I'll ask anyway.

It's a '93 SL2. 120k miles, 5 Speed, no auto locks or windows. Dark blue with grey interior. No accidents, but it does have a ding on the hood. new tires and breaks, but 120k service hasn't been done on it yet.

After reading some of these posts, this screams a car that a dealer won't want, so is it a much better idea to just pay for the 120k service and have a go at selling it myself? Thanks!

    ...... Shazaaaam .! .. are you sure she didn't hit a Moose .. ?

Looked at the pics, all in all ~ eh, aah, ugh ~ not so bad, seen worse .. the reason why the airbag didn't deploy was it was hit at an angle, the Yota insignia is fine, one of the sensors is about 4/6 inches back of that .. the fender was hit more on the side, than head on and the sensor is about 5/6 inches farther back in the fender ....

If I'm lookin' at the front shot "pass side view" close enough, it looks like we have a little "el tilto" action in the engine .. maybe a little frame flex ..? or, maybe I'm just not seeing it right ... I could be wrong, I was thinkin' $3,5/$4,5, "maybe", "could" be more towards that $5/$6ish range ..? - But I hope I'm wrong, probably am .. thanks for the yellow tape, makes it much easier in the rain(?)

You will know bunches more when they get some Jacks/lift underneath it ....

                         Terry :(
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
Yeah, I spoke with the guy from the shop today, after he saw it. He thought that it was a LOT of damage for a deer hit.

He also said, w/ 88k on the clock, it might get to a "total", but he'll know when he jacks it up and goes over it.

The way I see it, before the hit it was an $8k wholesale car, maybe a touch better, that needed $1k in tires/t-belt/90k service.

After the hit, it'll be a $6,500 wholesale car that still needs $1k.

If the bill comes to $7, they'll total it and cut me a check for $9 or so.

If the bill comes to $6, I'll take the $6 and run.

If the bill comes to $5, I don't know what I'll do.

If the bill comes to $3 or $4, I'll have it fixed and it'll be back in the driveway in a month or six weeks. Oh joy.

But hey, compared to what a new wife costs... so I'm seeing the big picture here.

    Thanks for the comments.

....... Rush rush rush, run run run, go go go, hurry hurry hurry ... don't you ever stop and smell the roses .?

Just like these beautiful ones here -- Aaaaaaah, it's poison ivy .. !!! - never mind.

We live near Boulder, Colorado and would be trading it in in the Boulder/Denver area.

    New t-belt, water pump, tensioner
    New Toyo All-season tires
    New International battery
New rear brakes, needs front brakes done
    No accidents, one tiny dent
Owe $12k on it* ~~~~ Miles are tall tall tall, your not going to get any breathing room with that meat clever, still needs some service, but based on your description it still has some "eyes" ... Trade side, in and around the $7's, "might could" creep towards $8,0 ..

    **'97 Jeep Wrangler Sport
    White, tan interior
    Manual Transmission
    No accidents, good/exc. condition
    60k miles
Owe $6k on it* ~~~ miles are good for the year, color is good anywhere, if it needs -0-, then trade side you should be seeing in and around the $7's also ...

Down Retail Rd, I bet that Wrangler would sell in about 72hrs with a great ad, super detail and a "asking" price of $9,900 ~ then say "John Elway" when you hear $8,9/$9,5 and cut her loose ... the Audi?, well that's up to you, you might see $9/$10,0 if you can get it to glow in the dark, 120% service, but the miles are Killing you here ...

                   Good luck ....

Trust me, that Chevy will never run out of parts to replace, it'll just start over again. We get it back tomorrow.

I'm sorta bummed today, we were heading into town with the Explorer, doing about 55 on the highway when a tractor trailer with doubles passed us going the opposite way. My Explorer has/had a Lund lunar lighted visor on it, well, that tractor trailer went by, there was a deafening POP, we stopped and looked, it had ripped the visor's holding screw right out of the roof and put a nice dent there. So much for that. Now it gets to have another spot painted, visor is off now, but there's a plugged hole where it used to be.

Didn't I tell you to drive out from under the black cloud that follows your vehicles around? You deserve better then this. Terry can you talk to the big auto guy in the sky and let her catch a break!

Mathias- You are right on on the cost of repair vs. new wife. Plus with the break in period of a new better half it's just cheaper to fix the car. :-)

Just wanted to give you an update on the 96 Aurora (45k, black, gray leather, moon) after 2 hrs of on/off with the dealer, they finally went up to $4,500 for her trade (they started at $3,500) by that time is was time to go home.
She had it detailed from a place we use for $125, (looked new) then she thought perhaps keeping it for another year, but she works for the Post Office and put some great flyers up at three different boards (pics and such) for $7,900 and the ad went in on Tuesday.
Well that didn't last long, she sold it last night for $7,000 cash!

As usual, Thanks for all the help, I think we owe you about 30 Steak dinners about now.
    Happy Halloween

My brother in law got his new truck Tuesday (he was the one with the '97 stripper S10 that the neighbor kissed for $1800...).

Turns out my sister's co-worker hadn't talked to his wife about buying the '97, so the deal didn't go through. Bro in law ended up trading the unrepaired truck in. Got $1900 for it as it was, and bought an '03 S10 V6 4x4 off the showroom floor--$25K sticker for $18K after dealing and subtracting the $4000 rebate. He used the insurance money and trade as the downpayment.

I guess he did well on the trade given the damage and the lack of amenities on the truck.

Your info was a big help, though--he and I say thanks.

    Roof Rack/Keyless/Tint
    No dings, dents, or rubs

..... Oooookay, what do we have here ... we have a 2002 clean Toyota Highlander, 2WD 4cyl Auto, base .. hmmm not much going on here .. aftermarket leather, miles are Tall and we live in the land of Doug Flutie ....

Trade side, if it's super clean, deep sneakers, no KFC invasions, you should be seeing in and around the ultra high $16's maybe the low $17's depending on the dealer.. if it needs stuff start deducting ..

In the Land of Retail .. $19,900 "asking" and grab $18,5/$19,5 .. the miles, the 4 banger and the 2wd are not going to be your friends here, especially this time of the year in NE ....... :)

A friend has a nice 1993 Camry LE. It's a 4 cyl, automatic. Champagne color looks VERY nice inside and out. Never seen a dog, a smoke or a kid. Always garaged and babied. Service records from Toyota. Recent T-Belt etc...

cloth car, great interior...probably could use a set of tires before too very long.

Look, runs and drives like a 50,000 mile Camry.

    Alas...it has 215,000 miles!

    Seattle area.

    What do you think?
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
Sounds like an "ask 3,500 and take what you can get" to me. Might even have a used-car check done and compression measured.

Seattle? No snow, no (road) salt? Plus, the '92 and up don't rust anyway... so maybe even ask $4.. around here in MI, it would bring $2 inside a week.. I know it would, I'd buy it myself!

Toyota built some of their longest-lasting cars in the early '90s.

If it's super nice, ya know, lookin' driven' and feelin' like a 50k .. you guys would probably put $1,200/$1,500 in it, would do that at the Seattle auction if it's as clean as you say it is .. no fear, an easy $2,2/$2,8+ sends it off to that stupid quarterback you guys have .... :)

..... Your very welcome .. Based on your description I knew that dude wouldn't last long, plus she got the right $$ for it, these Aurora's are still very popular and if they are clean, low in miles and got all the stuff, then they will still get ALL the Jingle ... not bad for a dumb ol' 9 year old "out of business" domestic, still doing 25% of the original MSRP ...

They have a great steak package at Omaha Steaks .l.o.l....

    ...... Orange .? is that a stock color .?

Anyway, the miles are super low low for the year, no cows, no slider, color is Yuk .. this time of the year folks aren't looking for rwd's .. trade side I would think a dealer would be lookin' at around the $4's, might get close to $5, maybe, but it better be clean, deep round things, no kisses, no re-paints and no AK47's in the trunk ..

Down Retail Rd, $7,900 "asking" and grab the first $6,5/$7,500 .. keep in mind, books don't buy vehicles, people do .. so park your ego at the door if you are going to sell it yourself .... :)

                     I hope this helps ...

                           Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... The color is good, the miles are good, it's a 5dr .. at $15ish the dealer should be close or right on the peso's ..

**If Saabs have poor resale value it should be reflected in nada, kelly blue book, etc.**

Not knocking Saab's, but they have the re-sale value of a asparagus .. Like the Lincoln LS, they do make Super great buy's on the pre-owned market .. there not bad vehicles, they just don't carry the load.

Just like Lance mentioned, depending on the vehicle and especially this time of the year "the books" can be $1,5/$4,000 off on the value (real money) .. kinda remember dealers are looking 2/3 months down the road, Not What Happened 2/3 months ago ...

                       Sorry :(

Hi, Terry, looks like this got skipped so I'm re-posting. I actually posted this earlier in the year but decided to hold off on the new car until now. So, I'd like to get an update on what kind of trade-in value I could expect from my 2000 Accord SE. Miles are about 77k. Color is "Naples gold" (metallic beige) with ivory cloth interior, 4-cyl., auto., ABS, security, cruise, CD, alloys. Two minor accidents, bumped once from behind and once on one of the rear doors, both repaired. Otherwise the exterior is in good shape. Interior is close to perfect, no kids, no smoke. New tires, new brakes. Full service records. I'm in the Boston area. Thanks for your help.

Oooh, we got some kisses going on here, miles are waaay tall for the year, good color, auto, abs .. lot's and lot's of Accords going around now and you have to compete with all the 20kers .. trade side, in and around the $7's, "might" could travel up to the low low $8's if it's puuurffect and needs -0- .. the miles are killin' ya here ... ouch.!

               great description, thanks.

Well, that's certainly better than the $4500 Boch Honda offered me yesterday. I knew enough to give that one a respectful raspberry, thanks for confirming I'm not delusional. And thanks for providing this service, not only useful but just plain fun to read.
