may 15th, thats a tough call... I think I'll take the under, well, maybe the over +30 days, I'll have to think about it a minute....

Somehow I doubt I'll be buying anything else. Hubby's got me under his thumb now and will kick me into the next millenium if I even *think* about it.

Like he said, he don't care if I like it or not, I'm driving it until the warranty is up. Its his money and his credit that buys my new car, so its up to him more than me.

Thank you very much for the advice, here's another dilemna I am considering as I am looking to purchase a minivan for the family...
Trade my wife's Neon, which again I owe about $4000 on and keep my Corolla and hope it lasts another 5 years or ...
Trade my 1995 Toyota Corolla (base model (no power anything), automatic, nonfactory Pioneer cd player, blue, 97k, good shape but been in 2 accidents) which is completely paid off and then hope the Neon lasts me for another 5 years or so.

What do you think? Could I even get anything worthwhile for the Toyota?

    Thanks again!

can you take a look at post 16354?

I looked at Galves price for this car. I was surprised it was less than $9k. Then I discover that is an east coast number.

I can't believe they deducted for the 5-speed. Besides the fact that AT was not offered when I bought this car, this is a high performance sports car made to be driven with both feet.

Most used car evaluation tools deduct for hi miles on this car. I thought 15k per year was average. This car has 11k per year.

    Thanks for your time!

Hi Terry, I was wondering if you could come up with a price 1997 Explorer XLT 4 door.

    V6 4.0L
    Automatic
    White
    76,000 Miles
    Leather
    Power Everything
    Clean Condition
    Los Angeles

Was offered $3,800 for a trade in which I turned down.

    Thanks

while the mileage may be average for the year, any ride with over 80K isn't used for retail sale (generally) on any new car/used car lot - the dealer has to sell it to a regular used car dealer and pass on the profit from a retail sale.

If they can't warranty or guarantee the car, forget normal values.

Your best bet is retail road on this - get a good detail, take out a nice ad...you know the rest. You're only going to be insulted at a dealership because the dealer's hands are tied - because of the mileage you put on the car.

I'm sure Terry will be able to give you the real deal about your situation. But, here is my .02 on the matter.

"Most used car evaluation tools deduct for hi miles on this car. I thought 15k per year was average. This car has 11k per year."

I used to think the same thing. But, what I've found to be closer to the truth is that the mile/year ratio only works in the sellers favor if the resultant number is relatively low (i.e. <10K miles/year) during the first 8 years or so. After that, it's importance diminishes. This coincides with the idea that anything over about 80K is considered high mileage... period. Year be damned. Hence the deductions.
  • joe2617joe2617 Member Posts: 88
just my .02, but average mileage varies from model to model. A sports car is expected to have less miles than a family hauler.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, but considering we want to buy a house in 2 years I think this will be my LAST vehicle for a while. I don't regret trading off the 97 Explorer, but I do kind of miss it, I didn't cry until we were leaving the lot for the last time yesterday.

I finally wrestled my new Explorer away from hubby and got to drive it some today. Really nice truck, I'm impressed, he loves it. Had 12 miles on it when we got it, has 484 now, haven't had it quite 24 hours yet. Of course it was a 300 mile drive home last night from the dealership.

We've got the red theme going, his Dodge is Flame Red, my Explorer is Red Fire.

**** These are pretty nice little rigs and in your neck of the woods they can get stupid money (-15, Yeow ~ it's 80 here) actually there pretty strong everywhere .. this one is the TRD, 4x4 EC Limited with low miles, color is eh' .. dealer probably has $22/$23, could have $24 in it, these are few and far between and nobody gives them away with the warranty, I would think it would take $26/$27 to get it home - whats he asking .?****

The asking price is $25k, and I have learned it is a local trade with service at the dealership. I need to find some time to go dealing...

Thank you again for your great help.

    Thanks ;-)

Hopefully it gives me many miles of trouble free driving, or at the very least, no repair bills (gotta love a warranty).

A 9 year old, been in two accidents, almost 100K miles, base with automatic, aftermarket stereo. It is a touchy feely kind of car in order to peg an accurate value. If you want a give or take of $1000, then ok. This is assuming the accident damage was repaired reasonably well, no mismatched paint, no ripples, no signs of frame damage under the car, etc. Then there is the issue of real world condition of the car. It can vary a lot in 9 years and 100K.

FYI similar car Locally, 96 Corolla, loaded, 127K, average condition (few dings, lots of rock chips), new tires and brakes, poor maintenance per owners manual history, had no major mechanical problems, private party asking $3200. Been for sale for 3.5 months. Turned down a early-winter offer of $2100 cash, wouldn't budge on price. Still not sold. Yours truly was looking for a Corolla $2000 winter driver. Very rarely do we see decent or average condition older Toyota's go to the auction.

Since I made my original post, I checked my Dad's files and see that he paid $22K for it in 1998 when it had 45K miles on it. So he put 20K miles on it in almost 6 years.

It sounds like $13 - $14K for it would be fair, as it really is in nice condition.

I might take it myself but right now, it just doesn't fit our daily needs. I'm toying with the idea of just putting it in the barn for 10 years or so. By then, it could be a pretty cool ride and more practical for me after the kids are gone. That would probably not be a great financial move, but I have the means to easily afford it. The thought of driving a "cherry" 25-year Benz is enticing.
  • dougb10dougb10 Member Posts: 185
If you can "easily afford it", I would not hesitate at all. Take it over and put it away for those nice sunny day drives. Down the road you will be glad you did. I regret not doing the same for some of my parents "cool" cars that I passed on buying....especially my Mom's dark green '69 Camaro convertible with a 327 that was so mint you could honestly say it was out of the box. I was afraid that my then 16 year old son would get his hands on it and do something stupid (and with 5 kids I could not afford to just put it away for safe keeping).
You only go around this world once...seize the day!
    Good luck....Doug

Sorry if this is not the appropriate forum, but does anyone know where I can find the original MSRP/Invoice prices for older cars? Edmunds does a good job at pricing used cars at todays prices, but I am interested in finding out how well certain cars hold there value, so I need to get the original info.

    Thanks in advance.

....... It all depends what you consider an accident (2?) .. did someone hit it going 5mph and scrape the rear fender all the way across .. or did Bubba roll over it doing 55 in his Cummins Diesel ..?

This is probably a $1,500ish vehicle trade side, If the tires are deep, looks 99ish, feels 00 and drives like 01ish ....

    #16354 of 16435 What can I get for my Bimmer? by kam2004 Jan 05, 2004 (8:36 pm)
What can I expect to get from private party/dealer for my 1995 BMW M3 coupe?

    original owner
    San Francisco area
    very clean
    100,000 mi
    5-speed
    no body repair or paint
    non-smoker
    black/black
    CD changer, sunroof, computer, cruise

               ==================

These M's have to be in the Wrapper to get any money, miles are ok for the year but nothing special ... no rust, no paintwork, seats lookin' new, no touch-ups, no I drove over all the curbs at the drive-in, cold breeze, no scrapes, no I let my cousin do paint by numbers, ALL the service from yesterday, deep round things, lookin' and feeling like an 00 with 25k ... trade side, the high $8's low $9's, if it's a "jam-up" Bimmer maybe a little more ... but if it needs stuff, start deducting ..

Down the block turn left, go another quarter of a mile and that should be Retail Rd .. with a Ultra detail, an Excellent 5 liner Ad in the Big paper, ALL the service records super-glued to the windshield, *asking* $12,9 and cut it lose for the first $11,5/$12,5 .. remember, folks that buy these, know em' and they will pick em' apart if there not right, so make it so ...

I hope this helps and Let me know.!

    1998 Lexus GS400

    black with white leather(ivory ?)
has all options I believe including mark Levinson and navigation
its in Phoenix, and in good shape--no kisses or kfc spots

what say you? thanks in advance

What say I.? .. I say that I'm just overjoyed that Madonna gives everyone her political views, especially since she hasn't voted since 1990 and doesn't live in the States, but that's a topic for another time and channel ...

So it's a 98 GS400 with the stuff, (down the street from where I like to golf at Camelback) it's black(?) with 70k and it's been "sillyfied" .. dealer probably had the $14's in it, add a this and that maybe $15ish, should be bought for $18,5 or much less ... black in Scottsdale.? .. that's like using dayglo balls to tee off with .. What did he pay for it ...?

OK, how about a 2001 Acura TL and a 2001 Honda Accord EX 5-sp manual?

I like to do a lot of researching around for myself and family/friends, so I was wondering if there was a site somewhere here on Edmunds where I could easily access this info (they had it all posted here at 1 time), without having to post a question to the board each time I wanted the info.

By the way, I would like the number to compare depreciation rates. In this case, I suspect the depreciation of the Acura will be less than the Honda, but being a scientist, I crave quantitative, rather than qualitative, data!

    Thanks
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
..... I don't know if I can answer your questions or not, see I'm not a scientist, nor do I play one on TV .. but I will try ...

There is a bevvy of issues that effect the value of vehicles, geographic area, time of the year, color, options, Miles & Condition (not your idea of the condition, the real deal condition) service history, accidents, paintwork, how many were produced, cost of maintenance, etc ... and most info sources can't or don't keep up with certain issues, because they don't feel it actually effects the vehicle, when it can make all the difference in the world ...

As an example, a black Acura in Savannah doesn't do the money as would a lighter color, but in Chicago it could be worth $500/$900 more, depending on the options and miles, plus most of the info sources don't deduct enough money for mile usage, they can show you numbers but everything changes when the dealer hit's it at $500/$700++ less .. like I tell my customers, if the book says it's worth more money, then have them send ya a check for it and we will just work on the price of mine .. the funny part is, in 20 years in the biz I have yet to see anyone get a check .l.o.l.. funny how that works.

Since I don't have much of a description, then I will just wing it here and compare the apple to the apple ..

01 Honda Accord 4dr EX, 4 banger (no V6, right?) with a handshaker, no help there because the market diminishes on the 5 speeds, they all want to buy them, until it's time to "buy em" then it's a whole different enchilada .. lets say this dude has 25k, no paintwork, clean, no science experiments in the interior, no kisses, deep sneakers, good service, just a nice little Accord .. trade side, in and around the high $10's, low low low $11's, "could" maybe "might" see a few bucks more depending on the dealer ...

Let's say the same for the TL, 01, nice, no nav, 25k .. trade side, in and around the high $15's, low $16's

quantitative, rather than qualitative ..? (where's Mathias when I need him?) .. I will look up those big words later, cuz' it's time for another golf lesson and that's really important ..... :)

                          Terry.

Storing a car requires maintenance, to keep the engine and drivetrain from drying out. Also, need to keep the body from rotting from age. It is a myth that just not driving a car "preserves" it.

Haven't been around for several months, so I'm tickled to death that this thread is still in business! Gotta give Terry his strokes... what a great place to get the straight stuff. You really helped me out back in May when I had to sell my Expedition.

The wife wants a 2002 Explorer Eddie Bauer, and I need to sell a 2002 Isuzu Trooper. Here's what I'm looking at for Explorers here in Houston, Texas:

    Eddie Bauer
    3rd row rear seat
    4.6L V8
    25-30,000 miles.
    2WD
No fuglies on the outside or inside.
    Everything works

I've turned up three of them at dealers: blue, black, and green. All of them clean with no disfigurement. Does the color matter on price?

    Asking prices range from $22-24,000

    What should I be paying?

As for the 2002 Isuzu Trooper:
    S model, auto, all records
    Red with grey cloth interior
    37,000 miles (yup, kinda steep)
Cold air, everything works, drives like a new one, 2WD.
clean body except for some permanent bug splatters on the front panels
    Brand new tires
No KFC orgies in the interior.
Class III Tow package, side steps, and new shocks.
Still in Houston, like the Explorers (grin)

Many thanks in advance! Long may you reign.

Since the unofficial secondary topic seems to be the Super Bowl... I won't be going (and neither will the Texans), but I'll be listening to the game live. Our house is 2 miles from the stadium. I'm thinking of charging for parking on the street in front of my house!

Some of the neighbors are renting out their houses for the week of the super bowl, but my wife didn't like the idea of a bunch of drunk strangers messing up the place. $3000 opportunity lost. 'Scuse me while I go cry about it.

Hey my 2003 Dodge 3500 Dually was stolen, paid off, then recovered. I am trying to get the insurance to sell it back to me. What would a wholesaler pay at auction? That is where it will go if they say no. SLT w/Sport pkg. PW, PD, CC, 6spd,Cummins HO, cloth, 4wd, w/2500 miles. Steer column is broken, ext. scratches, pop spilled everywhere. Not bad though.
    I paid $37500.00 Insurance paid $38700.00
    Thanks for info!
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,472
Wouldn't the Dodge come with a salvage title after an insurance pay-off? If so, I assume it would slaughter the value.

Can't you take the payoff and buy a brand new one instead?

2020 Acura RDX tech SH-AWD, 2023 Maverick hybrid Lariat luxury package.

  • driftracerdriftracer Member Posts: 2,448
it wasn't salvaged, it was stolen. The damage seems fairly mild.

Now, a question - if you got more than you paid for it, why not just go buy another truck and pocket the change?

i have a 2003 corolla. still 2 years to go on my lease. (i got it in early 2002)

here's my question. my lease buy out is $6K

i know for a fact i will have to buy this car due to very high excessive mileage

if the body is good/excellent can anyone even begin to make a guess as to the value in 2006 if it ends up having 110k miles on it?
  • tomcat630tomcat630 Member Posts: 854
Look up 2001 Corolla values how many miles you think you'll have. My bet is that $6000 will be a good price in 2 years.

"(where's Mathias when I need him?)"

I'm right here in Germany, at my parent's house, for a little vacation...

As far as older values: If you're looking online, IntelliChoice.com used to have those. Unfortunately, I think they went belly-up a couple years ago or merged or something. But it might give you a start.

Willing to do legwork? Do what Hermione does and go to the library. Maybe they'll have back issues of Edmunds books. Even more work: Grab a stack of Car&Driver, look in the index for Road Test Digest (NOT in every issue!), look there for the car you're interested in, and check the price there.

Finally, who cares. It's water under the bridge, plus you can't check rebates. What's it worth today, and what does the equivalent new one cost today, those are the relevant questions.

    Have fun,
    -Mathias

Ok, lets take a look here .. we want a 02 Exploder EB, 2wd and miles in that 25ish range .. H-Town dealers own them for in and around that $18ish range, should be able to grab one for $20ish, plenty around ..

Now, let's talk about that Stooper, I mean that Trooper "S" .. 37k, 2wd, a little tow pack, cold breeze, new sneakers, auto, red-eh' .. trade side, in and around that $10ish figure, "might" maybe stroll towards that $11 figure, these a funny vehicles, folks either love them, Or, they don't ...... :) .. what is your "difference" figure ...?

Down Retail Rd .. *asking* $13,9 and grab the first $12/$13,0 .. like I said, these a kinda funny in the market, the color and the miles aren't going to help ya here ...

Terry, don't want to nag, but I think you missed me, #16395 - I've reposted below. Thanks!

    Hey Terry,
Thought I'd check to see how my car is doing (now would be the time to switch to a convert if I'm going to do it this year - yeah, I'm still thinking S2K).

    *2002 Honda Accord Coupe EX-V6
    *Automatic tranny
    *Black
    *43k miles
    *Boston area
*Will need new tires in 5-8k miles
    *Has a spoiler
*Interior in great shape, looks "hovered in," no fries, no nada, except that the driver's floormat needs replacing (worn spot by my gas pedal foot)
*Exterior in good shape, not perfect:
+Rear bumper is scuffed at both corners - touch up looks good, but it's visible at 3 feet if you're looking for it. Doesn't catch the eye, but it's there. A repaint would be $400.
+Has a couple of very minor dings, and one larger (quarter-sized) one that I'd have PDR take out before I put it on the market.
+Has a 1 inch by 1/2 inch scuff on one of the alloy wheels
+Overall, looks pristine from 15 feet, but it's had some wear and tear that any close inspection will find.
*Has had all the maintenance, and I have the records.

    What say you?
  • mishmikmishmik Member Posts: 3
I didn't tell the whole story. The truck I traded in for the dodge was way upside down so the gap coverage covered the negative balance but there was nothing left. After that I decided to slim my payments down and bought a work truck instead of a new Dodge. I just thought it would be cool if I could buy it back for much cheaper. No it should not have a salvage title since it is in good shape. However I found out today that they won't sell it to me. I will have to go and bid on it if I want it that bad. I still may but I don't have high hopes standing in a sea of wholesale sharks to get it for a reasonable price. No offense to anyone.
    Thanks for the input!
  • akanglakangl Member Posts: 3,282
Well, look on the bright side, you got out of your negative equity situation. Personally I wouldn't want a vehicle back that had been stolen. I told my hubby that if a car jacker wants my car they can have it as long as they promise to total it cause I don't want it back.

We just bought a 2004 Explorer, but I didn't buy gap insurance on it, finance lady said we shouldn't need it. I still wonder though. Good thing you had it!!
