I'll try this again since there were so many messages today my short 2 liner may have been too difficult to find. Got your cute reply, silly me I missed the most obvious part of the description! I've pasted and revised the original message :)
Need a private party price on a 96 Honda Civic Ex, 2 DOOR, dark green, 108,000 highway miles in the Houston area. One owner, had a fender bender with replaced front left fender and bumper with repaint and repainted hood. Car is immaculate, has one door ding. Superb detail on it, barring a few scratches interior and exterior look like the showroom! 85,000 mile timing belt change, owner states regular oil changes and maintenance (not all documented). Drives like it is 60,000 miles on odo.

Standard equipment, interior cloth front seats with a little fading, otherwise superb condition.

Oh, standard equipment is AM/FM radio with 6 speakers, sun roof, 5 speed standard, cruise control, auto door locks, good tires.

Also, receipt with 8 months/10,000 miles left on warranty for a/c rework. AC blows like it's new!

Would appreciate your expertise on value.

    Thanks.....

I'm watching the Barrett-Jackson auction on Speed and it looks pretty glamorous. Here I had a picture of these auctions being in dark and dingy places with plenty of cigarette smoke, no a/c and with most of the people wearing white shoes with matching belts. I'm seeing you in a whole new light mister. :)

are dingy, and filled with smoke and white shoes and belts - most guys there don't know who Barrett-Jackson is.

Barrett-Jackson is the only place, however, that you can purchase Michael Jackson's customized 2002 Bentley Arnage Turbo - they are predicting a half a mil for that one...

    Update from the dealer:
On the FX, which he is asking for $38.9K. They said they took in on a trade. The lowest they will go is $38K, and my offer is at $35K. I really do not want to pay anymore than $35.5K. What should I do? Playing the waiting game may hurt me from the trade-in end. Their FX hasn't been listed for more than a week. I love the FX.
  • butchbr73butchbr73 Member Posts: 325
....well, tough questions your asking, not sure there is much you can do. If they want to sell it $38k right now, looks like you'll have to pay $38k.

Terry gave you what the value of "like" FX's are pushing thru the auctions at. This doesnt mean that is the price they "paid" for it, they may have paid too much and have $34k in it, who konws.... Nothing you can do if thats the case, doesn't seem like they are too eager at your offer.... they'll be plenty of them out there, relax, have some patience.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
........ I'm going to the Miami boat show in a few weeks and I really do not want to pay anymore than $50grand for the new Monterey 296, but that ain't going to happen .l.o.l..

Dealers sell vehicles for a profit, it's just business 101, plus I can't speak for that particular dealer .. but FX's are not distressed merchandise, it isn't like 200/300 run a day (or even a month) at the auctions throughout the country .. so either bite the bullet and step up, or step-out, or come to a figure that's fair for both ... your at $35,5 and he's at $38, try $36,750, if it fly's, Great .... if not, go home and relax, have the ol' lady make a great batch of Chicken Paprikash, put on the candles and do something else ...

...... I watched it last night for awhile .. I've been there a few times and BJ also has one in West Palm and I think that one runs in mid-March, actually most of the "good auctions" are very similar to Barrett-Jackson .. just pull out all the seats and add 10/15/20 lanes, add 3,000+ vehicles (instead of 800) and speed it up x 2, and there ya go ...

Most of the vehicles they have are classics or frame-ups restorations and most of the buyers are collectors and/or enthusiasts, few dealers unless they are selling, plus Barrett-Jackson does a wonderful job with the "drama", the style, the hype .. most of the time, the "actual" buyers you see have only been to one or two auctions, maybe ..

When they hit that place ~ with the food, the action, the cocktails, the lights, the camera's, the ringmen (ouch) folks get a little whacko, they feel the vehicle is worth $30grand going in, and they go home writing a check for $38, $40, $45, "watch" the ringman the next time you see it, the touchy feely, the "you don't want lose the car of your dreams for an extra $500, $2,000, etc, etc, but it sure is fun to watch.

There was two vehicles I had in interest in last night, just curious .. the 86 "Johnny Carson" Corvette that hit $10,6 - Yeeow, it's a $6,500 vehicle, but somebody paid for the name and it wasn't a nice car, the front fascia was all chipped up and the interior was a little weak ~ here's Joooohny.~ .. and the other one was the 97 Viper GTS that I actually sold new and it did $48ish ...

Drift: **Michael Jackson's customized 2002 Bentley Arnage Turbo - they are predicting a half a mil for that one...**

Half a mil ..? .. what.? does it have a Boy Scout troop in the trunk.? .. there only doing "around" $150ish with miles in the 3/5/7k range .. hey it's got a famous name, so you never know - "On any given day" .l.o.l..

                           Terry.

    as reported by Yahoo -

It said it was only a $150,000 vehicle, but with the customization (bling-bling wheels?) and Michael's recent notoriety, who knows?
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.... **had a fender bender with replaced front left fender and bumper with repaint and repainted hood. Car is immaculate, has one door ding**

Hmm, wouldn't that be an oxymoron ..?

But anyway, it's a 96 EX EL' Coupe', with 100k, we got the handshaker, we have some almost quasi newish tires, other than the meteorite hit it looks like new and no help in the color dept ... dealer probably hit it at the high $2's, low $3's .. down the lane to the Private seller, $5,495 *asking* and $4,5/$4,9 should be about all of it ....

                       I hope this helps ...

I watched a preview show yesterday evening and they were talking about the ringmen and describing them exactly as you just did, Terry. So I was impressed by their bluntness. They made it no secret that those guys (and gals) are there to get the extra money out of you.

I gotta know about this one car I saw go through last night that I was drooling over. It was a Silver '58 T-bird in top shape with all the right decals and everything. I thought it went ultralow at $18,500. Before the bidding started the commentators even said that a T-bird done perfect gets $40-$50K and that this one was done REAL nice. Then after it went at that price, they said the '58 wasn't as popular to collectors. So what is the real deal? Frankly, if I was there (and good thing I'm not), my wife would have had to cut my arms off to keep me from gladly paying $19K (and consequently having to lose it in the divorce - ;) ).

What type of offer can I expect when I trade the vehicle in? It has a 4.7l V8(235hp) with the towing pkg. and 5 spoke chrome wheels. Also, leather, htd. seats, mnroof, 10 disc changer, rain sensing wipers, tire press. monitors. It has 26,000 miles on it. Thanks for your help.

...... How the heck could you get lost in this mess ..? .. it's just looks like a shotgun when off in and Outhouse, thats all ... good description though, thanks.

Anyway, we have a 98 GS400, it's black in Phoenix, no help, miles are almost low for the year, we got the Nav and we have Mark "what's his name" for tunes, a little spoiler action, have some warranty, we have new round things, yeah.! .. plus we have service oozing out of the hood .. now were talkin'.

IF, we have no repaints, no let's play "carve my name into the seats", lookin' and feeling like 35k .. then trade side, in and around the high $13's, low $14's ... down the hidden path to the land of Retail RD, wonderful detail, great ad, service records hanging around, $17,9 *asking* and wave bye bye at the first $16,5/$17,5 ....

Don't forget to let me know.!

You can tell your Crestwood posse to stand down. My dad picked up the Acura RL (post #16275) yesterday. '00 with under 20k miles for $21,800. It looks and rides like an '03 for half of full bust-out retail. Years of happiness ahead.

Next question. What to do with his '92 Taurus SHO? Green over tan Bovine-Americans, handshaker (of course), bald spot sunburner, JBL with cassette and CD. Brand new sneakers, AC blows cold, well maintained and looking great for a 12 year old car. 189,000 miles. The Yamaha V-6 is a screamer, and the car is still hella fast. Residing in the home of the King of Beers.

Acura offered him less than the cost of the new sneaks. The newspaper ad yielded some calls, but no tire kickers. So what now? Charitable donation?
  • driftracerdriftracer Member Posts: 2,448
on that SHO - I have an idea.
  • porknbeansporknbeans Member Posts: 465
One thing I did catch last night when I was watching is that you have the auction price and then you also have a commission on top of that. IIRC, it was 8%. So if the Bentley goes for half a mil....you do the math.

....... Probably the most amazing thing that's going on is: that 90/92% of the vehicles that are going through have NO RESERVE .. now, That's Amazing, it never happens ...

Usually there is 70/80% that HAVE a reserve, for whatever reason it's going the other way around, I found that to be very odd, never seen that in 15 years ...

Qbrozen: they were referring to a 55 or a 57 .. like you, I like the 58 and the money was right ..

    ...... Ok, I called them off .l.o.l..

I'm glad things worked out and I could help, the RL's are nice vehicles .. the only problem is they start to get a little hinky around 170/190k, then you have to bust up a Sunday, miss the cartoons and church and find another one ...

92 SHO with a Kabillion miles, oh wow ... trade side, maybe $500/$600 depending on the condition, these are funny vehicles, either folks love them or they hate em' .. clean it up, detail, ad, asking $1,900 and say goodbye at anything .....

                     Happy Trails .!

Can I trade the GOLF toward the BIMMMER??? by bazoooooka Jan 22, 2004 (12:06 pm)
    Terry great job!! 2 questions.

    (1) What's an 02 GTI VW GOLF worth? (black, manual, 67k); both Trade in and Private; note it will need tires and brakes soon so maybe better for dealer to take.

    ================ how about some INFO ..? VR6, 5 speed, 6 speed ....????

    (2) Also what can I get an 01 blue 325I stick shift (hard to find used and new here but maybe its cuz no one wants them), loaded with 23k miles on it for? (i.e. what are the going at auction and how much markup should I pay over this)

    This is in Los Angeles....

    Thanks

I'll make ya deal, you drop all the proper information as possible - and I will give you an accurate answer ---- Sound Fair ...????

....... Hey JC, your a Left Coaster, right ..?

Miles are almost kinda low, right color anywhere, we have the sport/prem package, x-ray vision, all in all it sounds like it could be a nice one ... If it has new sneakers, service was yesterday, no repaints, no gangsta warfare in the interior .. then trade side, in and around that $20ish range, could "might" maybe see the $21ish range if it's ultra nice, super clean and needs-0- ...

Drive down the path, turn left, go 200 yds and that's Retail Rd .. then after a super detail, complete service, a wonderful ad at $24,900 *asking" and wave goodbye at the first $23,0/$24,9, lot's of 528's in your area for sale ...... :)

Good luck and let me know ..

Sorry to repost, but I think I got lost in the shuffle too. I really need your help on this one. I have to make a decision.

Hello, I need your help in the price of this expedition. Could you give me private and trade-in. Thanks.

    1999 Ford Expedition-Eddie Bauer 2wd
    4.7liter Engine
    Spruce Green Ext/Tan Leather Interior
Inside and Outside in good condition
    70,000 miles
    No accidents/damage/major repairs ever,Clear Title
    Oil changed every 3k
    3rd seat
    6cd changer(factory)
    "Good" goodyear tires
Luggage rack, Power everything,ABS,Tint, towing package, fog lights.
    Located in Houston Texas.

Here is why I need your help. I recently went to a chevrolet dealer looking into trading in my expedition for a 2001 Toyota Sequoia SR5 w/50k, leather, bla bla bla. They are asking $23,400 and are not moving. They told me that all they could do with my trade was $7800! Needless to say, I walked away, after hearing from them that they cannot offer me more. They even suggested for me to sell it to carmax and then come back to buy their car. What say you on their trade in offer?

Thanks for you help, you are a great asset to edmunds!

    Hi Terry,
I am looking at private purchasing a 99'(april) bmw 328i in Seattle with,
    stick shift
    white body color/tan leather
    6 cd changer
    2,5000 miles

Original owner, Carfax looks clean, average condition
How much would be a reasonable offer?

    Thanks a bunch!
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
....... Yeah, I get that same feeling sometimes .. great description, thanks.

Let's take a look .. it's a 99 EB, it's a 2wd, it's that medium greenish sprucy color with tan guts, no hit's, clean history, 3rd rider, good rubber, rack, all the junk and we live in H-Town, plus let's not forget that 70k ...

If it's as nice as you say it is, straight vehicle and lookin' 01 with 25k, then it's worth in and around the high $10's, maybe the low $11's trade side if it's super nice and needs -0- ...

$7,800 ...? .. is this a Yota dealer ...? .. sounds like a lazy dealer, or perhaps their loaded up in inventory, they make too much $$, or their just plain stupid - I think it's the later, why would they tell you to go someplace else, I must not be reading this right ...

               You were doing so well .. the Sequoia, 2wd - 4wd ...?

                            Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
    ...... You probably mean 25k, right.? ..

Not much of a description here .. if it's super nice, deep rubber, service is 110%, no paint by numbers, then it's probably worth in and around the $16 figure to a dealer, maybe less .. a fair Retail figure would be the high $18's, low $19's, the miles save this one .. whats he asking.?

                         Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... I didn't catch where you park this thing ..

We have 12k and if it's clean, no paint work, tires haven't melted off, not some whacked color, just a nice well maintained Z car ... then trade side (depending on where you live) in and around that $23ish figure ... what figure were they throwing at you ...?

                        Terry.

....... In the land of Manning we are lookin' at a gold Accord 4dr EX V6, 27k, color is fine for the area, we have the service, no K-mart kisses ..

If the tires are deep, then you should be seeing in and around the mid to high $15's, might get real lucky and "maybe" see the low low low low low $16's ...

    Terry,

The reason I asked for the real value is a dealer offered me KBB 19000 trade in for a 04 325i. They must have some hidden incentives that BMW has going on to help sell their cars in my area.
