..... ** The car is for my 16 year old girl who wants a Jetta or Mustang (no Japanese cars for her, she says "boring". Sounds good to me; what do you think? **
What do I think ...?
1.) I need to know the model and the details.
2.) I have 2 daughters, and if I ever heard: "boring, don't like it, hate the color, I need something more sporty, I gotta have" from my 16 year old, then she would be getting $20 bucks to take a Taxi in -- then, lets talk "boring" and that would be the end of that.!

Reminds me of when my 16 yr old son got his driver's license, I told him, when we let him, he'll be driving my '99 CRV since it's older and has way more miles than my wife's '01 Accord. He said "I'm not driving that piece of crap"....LOL...After I calmed down a bit, I said, "OK son, let me know how it feels to stay home at night or take the bus". That didn't last a week......
Miles are low for the year, we have the auto, we have a slider, cd, good color for the vehicle -and- "Whaaam" we smashed the front end up, how nice ... without really seeing it, I would think the super tall $4's low $5's on a trade .... down Retail Rd, superlative detail, wonderful big Ad and $7,495 *asking* and send it south for the first $6,5/$6,9 ..... the miles save it and the repair can kill it ...
IMO, a last generation Protege (2000 or 2001) is a good choice. Pretty cheap, certainly reliable, and probably as close to a Jetta in style/feel as you will get from Japan.
If I had to replace my Maxima and wanted to go cheap, an '01 2.0 ES 5 speed would be high on my list.
Terry, since I mentioned it, about what would the above described wheels (figure 30K on it) go for in NJ?
..... ** Coure De'Alene ** --- isn't that in France .?
2004 Explorer XLS Sport, V6/4WD, auto, red/gray, 11k miles, spotless (I'd hope so at 11k). Limited slip rear, located in Cataldo, Idaho (near Coure De'Alene and Spokane, WA).
...... Good choice .. 30k ES with a meat clever, maybe in the low low low $7's dealer side, $8,9ish on the Retail side ... the only problem with these are, they start breaking down when they have 120/140k on em', then you have to waste a whole day trying to find a replacement ...........
Sorry to nudge... Dunno if you missed this one, or if I missed your response (don't think so, but I was out of town for a few days, and had a bunch to wade through...)
Thanks!
----- Hey Terry,
One more time. Looks like I'm moving to NYC, so I need to get out of my lease about 8 months early. I'm already over on mileage by a bit (say $300 worth), and I'd need to pay Honda a total of about $3000 to walk away from it (about $3k in payments remain). If I sell it to a dealership, the buyout is $16,500. So, question is, is it worth shopping it around, or should I just wash my hands of it? My hunch is that a dealer won't give me much above $13,5, and probably less, so I'm better off paying it off and walking away.
*2002 Honda Accord Coupe EX-V6 *Automatic tranny *Black *50k miles (yeah, I know) *Boston area *Tires have about 5k miles on them *Has a spoiler *Interior in very good shape, no fries, no nada, except that the driver's floormat needs replacing (worn spot by my gas pedal foot) *Exterior in good shape, not perfect: +Rear bumper is scuffed at both corners - touch up looks good, but it's visible at 3 feet if you're looking for it. Doesn't catch the eye, but it's there. +Has a couple of very minor dings, and one larger (quarter-sized) one. +Has a 1 inch by 1/2 inch scuff on one of the alloy wheels +Overall, looks pristine from 15 feet, but it's had some wear and tear that any close inspection will find. I think it's well in line for a car with 50k, but *Has had all the maintenance, and I have the records.
What say you? KBB says $12k trade-in, Edmunds says $14,400, and yes, neither of them has offered to buy it, since they're books.
Hey, maybe I should use a reverse auction to sell this puppy... I think there's a guy in Oklahoma who might help me out...
2002 Tahoe LS, 35,800 miles, with leather, dual power seats, cassette and CD, rear air and radio controls. Good shape. No mechanical or other problems. Kept in garage. I was hit by a car 5 months ago. Repair cost appx $5 to 6K. Hood, fender, bumper, tire, etc replaced. No frame damage. All repaired now.
with 61k, smoke silver with beige leather, sunroof, starmark certified for up to 3 years 100k. New tires, excellent condition on dealer lot but has 1.5 inch crack in front right bumper and some minor paint discoloration on lower front bumper and minor ding on rear quarter panel that appears to have been filled in and touched up although still visible. These are all pretty minor and am told can be fixed before I pick up the car. 1 year warranty was included in asking price but I asked for warranty to be pushed out to 3 years.
The Protege is a nice little car. If I were buying I would avoid the 1.6 liter model paired with an automatic. I had one as a rental once and it was a little breathless.
lancerfixer, I should probably give a Saab a try sometime. I'd probably like it. Of course, that's what I'm afraid of! Ditto regarding BMW.
"No, Saabs kinda have their own feel; it's really hard to describe, but if there were a way to somehow make torque steer, rubbery shifters, and turbo lag fun, Saab found a way to do it."
lance - you're absolutely right. There's something about them that makes them fun - perhaps the need to carry a spare DI in the trunk is what does it. Seriously, SAABs just have something. Other than here in Boston, they are unique but I can't drive 1/2 mile without seeing one!!
"They also provide entertainment...watch someone who's never driven a Saab try to find the ignition switch. It's hours of fun!"
How but being unable to remove the key unless the stick shift is in reverse??
I agree with all the previous posts re: high Saab depreciation. But, you can make it work for you if you do your homework, & get a great deal on a used one. Or, lease a new one: sometimes SAAB has great lease rates.
I once bought a low-mileage Saab 9000 when it was a year old, saved about $10 or $12K off the orig. sticker, & drove it for 10 years, with very minimal problems (altho I put extremely low miles on it). I still kind of miss it.
CR actually rates the 9-5 as fairly reliable; much better than the 9000 was rated. I test-drove a 9-5 a couple of years ago; it didn't do much for me, & I bought a BMW 5-series which IMHO is a much more sophisticated car (& more expensive). But I think at the right (bargain) price, a 9-5 could make sense, & they look good too.......
I have 2 daughters, ages 16 and 20, and both are in 2003 Mitsubishi Lancers. They've got 24/7 roadside assistance and have 100k powertrain warranty. Good fuel economy and inexpensive maint. on them. We have a dozen of them left on the lot and they are an excellent buy. I looked at stuff on the used lot and decided there wan't enough value to be worth the hassles. I also like that the Lancer is a best pick in crash testing. $250 a month with nothing down.

Hmmm....add all that up and I'd say they're unreliable turds that nobody wants. Hell...Mitsubitchy's entire lineup is a bunch of unreliable turds that nobody wants (Evo excepted).
My experience with Mitsubitchy products reflects the same thing...
On the subject of Mitsubitchies....back in my hometown there's a Mitsubitchy dealer (Mike Perry)...runs all kinds of TV ads....and he always says "Mitsubitchy". They even ran an ad making fun of the way he said it.
So maybe I shouldn't give the 97 Mitsubitchy Galant that I was going to look at a second thought? Its my second choice right now, don't know a whole lot about it, will know more this week. Didn't realize they were so unreliable.
I think your best move at this point is to open your own BHPH lot out there in the Alaskan wilderness. Think about it. You would get to change cars frequently, you could make some money and to visit a car lot you would just have to go to work..... :-)
say nothing bitchy about them except the bitchy people who take pleasure in running them down but I'll pass. We own four of them and have nothing but good service from them. I have access to over a dozen car lines at invoice less holdback, floorplan, advertising etc. and wouldn't put my daughters in bad cars. They are very happy with their Lancers and I'm very happy with the savings compared to the other lines I could have selected.
akangl, don't automatically discount a Mitsubishi over what you read on here. When it comes to Mitsubishi this place is a lot like the south of 50 years ago with separate water fountains and bathrooms.
We tried that remember? Well, not really, but we did take payments on a vehicle. No thanks, I don't want the headache.......right now our driveway could almost pass as a car lot, 3 vehicles in it at any given time.
I just want to unload the Chevy and get a car that gets decent mileage. Then the Explorer will be parked around back of the house and forgotten about until gas prices drop.
I'll still take a look at it, my MIL has a Lancer and from what I hear its been a good little car. Hoping to do something by the end of the week, just waiting on my little brother to fix the truck so we can trade it in.
pointing out the rude comment about Mitsubishi products -
The Lancer has been around for three model years, there are gillions of these running around in the four state area I cover, and I've yet to see a lancer in a lemon law suit.
With nearly 5,000 cases under my belt, I'd say that says a boatload, rude comments aside.
I certainly can't say that about just about everything else on the market that doesn't have an H or T on the front end!
I won't own one, but only because they are somewhat "exotic" around here... this is deep GM territory, and only Toyota and Honda are truly common here.
Nissan is already an "off-brand", and Mitsu is even rarer. Now if the 1st-gen Lazer/Talon/Eclipse didn't have those lousy idiot belts, I could see myself picking one up on the cheap.. those were nice little cars.
One thing, though, Mitsu may go broke any minute now. I understand that DaimlerChrysler is killing their relationship with them, and they are heavily in debt. But that's the company, not the cars... there's really nothing wrong with them. They do make a good buy used (or new and keep them forever) if you have a good mechanic who knows them and knows where to get good parts.

Maybe Mitsubishi likes to buy their cars back before matters degrade to the point of needing representation...maybe Mitsubishi buyers largely don't give a rat's [non-permissible content removed] about pursuing lemon law problems. Who knows.
I can say that Mitsubishi is rated down with the likes of Ford, GMC, Saab (makers of fine artichokes), and Jeep on the JD Power long term dependability survey....
So maybe I shouldn't give the 97 Mitsubitchy Galant that I was going to look at a second thought? Its my second choice right now, don't know a whole lot about it, will know more this week. Didn't realize they were so unreliable.
Check into that specific model...but everything I've seen has led me to believe that they're all pretty rotten in terms of reliability, and I didn't think they were terribly easy to work on either....which means big repair bills.
"Maybe Mitsubishi likes to buy their cars back before matters degrade to the point of needing representation"
Unless your car is a Ferrari, Porsche (sometimes, forget it on Boxsters) or other exotic brand over $100k, there's not a manufacturer in the US that won't fight tooth and nail before they comply with federal and state laws.
They hope that the consumer will (a) trade the car due to disgust/frustration (b) forget about it (c) wreck the car or (d) repo.
If any of the above happens, they no longer have to worry about a lemon law buyback.
We have to go to anchorage on the 20th, if I don't have a small car by then it will cost me $100 in gas to drive the Explorer......a small car would be around $40. Who knows, whatever is going to happen will happen. I DO know that I will have a car by the end of the summer. I have to, the Explorer is too expensive to drive all the time.......16 mpg hwy is a killer, especially at $2/gal and 30k/year packed on.
Okay...so first assumption here is that your small car is going to get (100/40)*16 or 40 MPG. That's Honda Civic territory. The Galant you mentioned is 30 MPG assuming you get the 4 cyl...and that's about as good as you're going to get for a car that size. But let's run the numbers on 40 MPG....
You'll save $60 per trip, and the car is going to cost let's say $3.5k with TT&L. That puts 58 trips as the break even point for the car alone. This doesn't even consider maintenance for two cars, insurance for two, depreciation on a new Ford, etc.
Back to the real world....you're probably looking at 80-85 trips as the breakeven point if you guesstimate the other expenses, and assume a more probable MPG of 30.
Once I have the car I will drive it about 95% of the time and pretty much park the Explorer out behind the house and drop the insurance down to comprehensive. Basically drive the car and make payments on the Explorer. If I need the Explorer in the winter I'll have it, otherwise it'll be a yard ornament. I'm too upside down in my Explorer to trade it, so this is a logical alternative.
With the amount of driving I do, if I stick to the car 95% of the time it will save me about $2k/year in gas over driving the Explorer.
We also have the plus of unloading a truck that we don't use, won't use, and have no interest in keeping.......its a sore subject.

Anyway, what is the real world value for trade in and retail for this nice little Minivan. Thanks in advance.
99 Hooonda Ody EX with 89k, a/m leather, rack, a little tow pack (what weight was towed with it) warranty til' 100k, lot's of miles and a few scratches ... as long as we don't have any run's, hit's or errors, then trade side in and around the tall $8's, "might" see the the low/mid $9's if it looks and drives like 50k and needs -0- ... the warranty doesn't help you on a trade, but it does help if you waddle down Retail Rd, $11,495 *asking* and $10/$11,0 gets a new owner .... what kind of boat do you have.?
......... 11k .? .. somewhere in and around the ultra high $20ish figure, low low $21's ..... in 04 they also make a Sport-trac 4dr Exploder with 4wd and the V6, that will do about a ghee whiz more ..
...... Ecab 5.7 4x4 with 150k .. if it's nice for the year, no rust, deep sneakers, no click click in the 4wd, cold breeze, no I bounced off the neighborhood K-Mart .. then $4,500 is a good price trade or retail, you guys get silly $$ for 4x4's in Milwaukee ......
......... Thanks for reposting .. the important thing is that everyone is ok - vehicles are a dime a dozen .. it's probably worth around the high $3's, low low $4ish range, I'm thinkin' the insurance co will hit you around the $5ish range for it .....
....... Your dead on the $$, or at least close enough for horse shoes and hand grenades ..
$16,5 ..? it's worth in and around the $14ish figure if they ran it through the auction today, they "could" even get Real lucky and see close to $15, but they better be going to church every Sunday and Mercury get's aligned with Saturn in the 3rd moon phase and that happens about every 137 years .. miles are killing it.
Just like Patton said: Never pay for the same Real Estate twice ... miles are a way of life, if you had a crystal ball you would have adjusted the monthly payment to accomadate the extra miles, so you would have paid that extra $50 bucks a month - whether it comes out of your left pocket or your right pocket, it's coming out of the same pair of pants ~ you pay .. your fine, move on.
Yup, I knew that I'd be over on the mileage, so I've been putting an extra hundred a month away in savings for my expected fees at the end of the lease. I thought I'd owe $3k in mileage fees at the end of January - turns out it'll be the same amount ($2800 in extra lease payments, $300 in mileage), but I'll owe it in June. Ah, well. Still, been very happy with the car. Thanks again for your help!
park the Explorer out behind the house and drop the insurance down to comprehensive
Is the bank gonna get mad when you drop comp? Most banks get angry when you drop comp on something they're holding the note on.....
If I was in your situation, I'd pitch the truck nobody wants, and stuff the money away for a rainy day. I'd also drive the wheels off the Exploder....even if it did burn more gas. You're paying for it, might as well use it. Of course if I could easily pitch the Exploder and pick up something smaller, I'd do it.

Awhile back our UCM got tempted by a couple at the auction. I think they were 2002's and he snapped them up way below book.

$16,5 ..? it's worth in and around the $14ish figure if they ran it through the auction today, they "could" even get Real lucky and see close to $15, but they better be going to church every Sunday and Mercury get's aligned with Saturn in the 3rd moon phase and that happens about every 137 years .. miles are killing it.
