Is it too late to return the uninstalled mudflaps? Even if you pay a restocking fee, you'd probably come out ahead. They're not worth anything on a used car. I assume they're Dodge models? I'd put them on eBay.

Thanks, I'll check into it. I wasn't sure if it would add any value to have them on the Durango or not. I Appreciate it !!! Lisa

also check Carmax if there is one near you. They are in the business of buying used cars, and is a good way of getting a realistic price to expect.

First offer from dealer was $11.5, little lower than your suggestion. Countering with $12.5 and negotiate from there. And there was no Uh Oh. By the way, what do u think the dealer retails this for? How much put into it to replace tires and fix nicks?

    Terry -

It's been so long I can't remember how exactly the nickname came about. :)

Just wanted to let you know you were about on the money. Got a few lowball shots in the low 10's, but eventually negotiated our way to a cool 12 after having run it through a detail shop. :)

LL Bean Outback at 33? Ouch. Just wait'll the mystery 7-pax shows up next year. :-O

    Thanks for the info!

    ....... (My favorite thing)

Andy - Thanks for "letting me know" .. you did good, Real Good.! .. I had a funny feeling that someone would jump high in that part of the country ...

It kills me when folks don't respond until 2/3 months later, and then it's usually email .. like it's a big secret they couldn't get 18,000 for their $11,000 vehicle - "yeah but the book said ..... "

LL Bean Outback at 33 .. 2 came in, 2 are sold .... maybe there's something too these things .l.o.l.....

                                 Terry.

    ======================

Yeah, well. Just chalk it up to people being so caught up in the giddyness of a new car that they forget to check back into this board. :)

I think I saw one of the LL Bean's on display at a home show. The woodgrain trim is *NICE*. I haven't sat inside, but it almost seems like it it's actual wood rather than the plastick-ey wood you see everywhere.

What can I say.? .. if it isn't all faded and dented up from all of the church socials -- it probably just needs a wonderful detail, an oil change, tires might need rotated and a "Glorious" 5/6 liner Ad in the biggest paper in the area, $13,890 *asking* and let that puppy go for $12,9/$13,5 ...... remember, low miles can always sell a vehicle, but it has to look/feel and drive like low miles, so don't be afraid to spend a few bucks and do it right ........ :) ... no 4wd and no slider, so don't get too greedy.

This shouldn't last 3 days ... so let me know.!

Need a private party/trade in value. Any info would be appreciated.
98 ford f150 xlt ext cab.
    85,000 miles, auto, 4x2. 4.6 v8.
    dark red over gray.
    tow pack/bed liner/ tires have 20k miles.
paint glossy does have some minor scratches.
    overall good condition.
    located in Louisville, Ky.

          ==================================

Not much of a description here .. It's a XLT - thats good, we have the auto - thats better, it's a 2wd - eh', we have the Ecab - that's good, color is ok and we have the small block, rubber is eh', bedliner is a good thing ... if the bed is nice, the sides don't have that drive-by shooting condition, the paint is right and the interior doesn't have that Paul Bunyan look, cold breeze, serviced and it drives and feels like an 02 with 50k ... then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $5's, maybe the low low low $6's, if it needs stuff start deducting .... down Retail Rd, put some "eyes" on this dude, finish any service, great Ad, $8,490 *asking* and sniff and cry at $7,5/$7,9 - but take it .............. :)

I need some help to obtain a real private party/trade value. Looking at all the price guides do not match to the quotes I'm receiving from dealers. (I'm sure that's a common experience).

I live in Nassau County, a suburb of New York City.

I have a 1996 Audi A6 Quattro 4 door sedan with 57000 miles. The engine is a 2.8 liter V6. I am the original owner and the car was well maintained and garaged for its life. The exterior is glossy Casablanca white with a few dings in the doors. The bumper on the back lost some of its original paint ( 1/2 inch wide by 3 inches long) when I scraped a post. There was no damage other than the paint, and I used Audi touch up paint to cover, but it's still visible.

Other than that the exterior is clean. No accidents, fires, etc.

The interior is in excellent condition.

It has the following features: All wheel drive, black leather, power passenger and driver seats, heated seats, automatic climate control, power moon roof, Audi radio with cassette with 10 disc Sony CD changer in trunk, heated mirrors, memory driver and passenger seats, automatic transmission, new brakes, tires have 12,000 miles, I think the car had every option offered except the Bose radio and hands free cell. No mechanical problems. No alterations to the vehicle. Serviced according to schedule.

I think that's all. If I sell to a private party, I'll get the car detailed and fix the bumper. Should I do this when I trade? What is a good asking price for a private part sale?

I think that's all. Thank you.

    Terry,

Car_man said you might be able to help double check the true value of my truck. I have cut and pasted our brief discussion below. I added any missing info on the truck to my original message. Can you advise?

Thanks a million in advance for your time and any help you can give...

Hi charlie1volley. If you enjoy driving your truck and can purchase it for less money than it is currently worth on the open market, then you may want to consider purchasing it from the bank that you are leasing it through at this time. In addition to the excellent sources that you have already checked to see what your truck is currently worth, you also may want to stop by the following discussion that appears here in the Smart Shopper forum: "Real-World Trade-In Values" . One of our most knowledgeable community members, Terry, hangs out in that section of this site and he is often kind enough to give community members his opinion of their vehicles' current value. Just make sure to post a detailed description of your Tundra, including its trim level, color, miles, options, condition, and your location.

    Should I be one?
I am leasing a [white] 2003, V8 4x4 Tundra Access Cab [SR5] with TRD package. 18,000 mi, perfect condition, [auto lock/wind/mirr, standard CD/cassette. I am in zip code 90266]. I put $3005 down and have paid $404/mo for 25 mos. The lease company has requested a price of $21,700 to end the lease now. Edmund's says the truck is $22,383 private, $25,174 retail. Bluebook: $24,555. I did a quick search on AutoTrader and average price was $26K, most were 29K, with more miles than mine. I love the truck and can now afford to buy cash--should I? I just need a little reassurance or someone to tell me I'm way off track!

And if there is any way anyone can explain to me how they calculated that price, I'd be amazed! ;-)

    Thanks for any help! -c

    Terry,
I need the expected trade-in for the following vehicle. Thanks again for the great service you provide!
    Location: Charlotte, NC
    Vehicle: 2001 BMW X5 3.0 (non-sport model)
Engine: 6 cyl (3.2) automatic trans
    Driveline: AWD
Mileage: 42000 (under full BMW original warranty until 55,000 miles or 12/2005)
    Color: Burgandy ext, Beige int
Major options: Sunroof, Xenons, leather, CD (in-dash), dual climate (and rear climate).
    Condition:
      Tires - 50% wear
      Brakes - brand new
Exterior - excellent (no dings or dents)
Interior - very good (small discoloration on one seat (size of half dollar), some black marks on carpet in back)
Other: All service performed by BMW dealer. Second owner. Non-smoker car.

The NADA trade-in is $29,000 and the high-end black book value appears to be $26000. Is it reasonable to expect a trade-in between these values based on the above?

    Terry,
How much would the trade in value fall if I wait six to 8 months before I trade it in? Also does the extended warranty provide any value to the trade?

    Thanks.

    Cleveland, OH
    2003 Jeep Limited Liberty
    3.7L Auto
    4WD
22,000 miles - mostly freeway miles
    White
Full Bumper to Bumper warranty to 80k miles.
    ========================================
In the city of a great quarterback and no team .l.o.l.... good description, thanks ..... the miles are semi-tall, it's the 4wd Limited, color is ok, auto, no smoke, it's washed, it's serviced, it sounds maintained, no runs/hits or errors ....... ya know, I never thought these things would make it in the market, but they are well liked and the reliabilty factor has been strong .. if it's a nice one, no chads hanging from the mirror .. then trade side, in and around the low to mid $15's, might maybe "could" get a dealer to wander towards the $16 figure

How many lease payments are left?
And what is the closed end buyout price on the lease?
What is the total $$ amount for the above versus the total amount of your buyout amount given to you by the bank now?

These amounts will determine if it is worth buying it out now, or simply keeping your money in the bank and making regular payments and buying it at the end of the lease.
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,272
I'm not Terry, but I can take a crack at this one:
    >>>How much would the trade in value fall if I wait six to 8 months before I trade it in? <<<

$1000/$5000/$10000, depending. Check back in six to eight months and you'll get a better picture.

    >>>Also does the extended warranty provide any value to the trade?<<<
Yes, if it's transferrable, if it's a Chrysler factory warranty, if there's plenty left, and you sell it to a private party and not a dealer. No, if any of the above are false.
  • charlie1volleycharlie1volley Member Posts: 4
Cool, thanks for the quick response...

    Answers:
    11 payments left: $4449
    Closed end buyout: $18,512 + $150 fee = $18662.
    Tax (8.25%): $1527
    Total = $24,638.
    Total cost of truck: $37,757
    ($3005 down + $10,114 first 25 mos + $24,638 buy)

    Current offer: $21,696
    Tax (8.25%): $1790
    Total = $23,485.
    Total cost of truck: $36,604
    ($3005 down + $10,114 first 25 mos + $23,485 buy)

Difference is $1153...Guess I should buy...Any input as to how much the truck is currently worth on the market?

A friend, single mom with two small kids and a dog, is in immediate need for a new vehicle and found the following (her budget absolute max is $10k cash OTD, not a payment buyer):

    98 Nissan Pathfinder LE 4x4
60k miles, the usual V6 automatic
    tan, tan cloth interior,
    usual power stuff plus sunroof
I assume good condition, haven't seen it
    asking $9400 at local dealer

Because of insane gas prices here, and the fact that she lives paycheck-to-paycheck (like most), I thought this would be better:

    02 Ford Focus SE wagon
    metallic gold, tan cloth
    2.0L, automatic, air, power windows/locks
factory cassette/CD stereo, cruise and alloys
    28k miles (the best part!)
    ad says 'excellent condition'
$7400 from private owner ($$ left over)

Sorry these descriptions are not the best, I haven't seen either car. How do these prices sound? I thought both were good, but I'm trying to convince here to leave a little of that $10k left over for those unforseen emergencies. Whaddya think?

"Are you thinking of a 4WD in Michigan? If not, why? "

    Woody,
I'd love a 'fore-buy', but they're pricey, suck gas, and have an awful lot of moving parts. A '99 ECab with 75k and the 4.0/5sp would be cute, but now I'm looking at $8-9k and a six-year-old truck.
I love the $5-6k cars, 'cuz that's a place where you get a lot for the money, and I'm comfortable without collision insurance. 4x4's for $5k are a losing proposition, in my opinion. Everybody wants one.

"Also, have you driven any used Tacomas?"
Yes I have. The only thing worth buying, in my experience, is the reg cab 2wd trucks... these can be picked up for relatively cheap. Any Toyota 4x4 is is so expensive that you might as well buy used.

Just found out the Focus is a rebuilt title (not insurmountable cuz she's paying cash, but makes me question the low miles and be a lot less giddy about the price) and not available til the end of the month, which puts it out of the running completely (she is carless right now). Oh well, lots of Focus wagons out there, just not with 28k miles for $7k.
  • zodiac2004zodiac2004 Member Posts: 458
You say she has 2 kids....Rebuilt title cars aren't worth it at any price.

    ... **Focus is a rebuilt title** .....

Not good .. maybe in an accident and rebuilt from the ground-up, maybe frame damage, maybe super-glued back together - who knows.! ..... Carsmack.? a top mechanic needs to be all over this dude and even after his blessing and it's puuuurfect and it glows in the dark, it's still only a $5,000 vehicle on a push, maybe.! .. remember, can't get it financed, most ins co's won't insure it after they see the title --- it's rebuilt, it could have been in a hurricane, then totaled, then rebuilt - the miles could be anything ... $2,5/$3,0 on a trade, maybe.? ............. :(

                                Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... The miles are a little on the stiff side and it needs a few things ... if the dealer does the stuff, he would be *asking* $14,9 and probably drop-kick it for the first $13,5ish figure ... the miles are holding this one back .......

                                   Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
PS: the Pathy sounds nice, low in miles, LE 4x4, slider .... $9,400 .? .. he's not trying to retire on it, maybe $8,9.?

Terry - wanted to give you an update on trading the 98 Camry LE V6 with 23k in upstate NY. The Honda place stepped up nicely, as you thought they would.

They "showed" $9400 for the Camry on an '05 Accord EX auto non-leather. Difference ended up being $14,000 + tax, which made mom and pop happy -

...and like you said, the used car manager was on the phone, he had people lined up to see the Camry next week.

    Thanks again for the info...
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
..,..... EX no leather .. probably an invoice of $21ish(?) and a "difference" of $14 for Mom and Dad ...... sounds like they dropped the $6ish+ figure into it -- dealer will have it sold for $8,5+ as soon you can get the crowds away from it and they can find the keys from some salesman who been holding them for "his" customer ..l.o.l......

Yep.! .. you (they) did really good .. maybe Mom will make some home made dinners for you this week ....... Yummy .......... ;)

Thanks for the update ........ :)

Ok, at first I thought this might be a misprint because the price is about $10K less than what Edmunds says it should be (I know Edmunds is usually high, but that's a bit extreme). The car is an '01 E430 Sport in Tan paint with 50K miles with the standard goodies like leather, slider, and its got the Bozo sound. Dealer has it listed for $27K. So I figure, if Edmunds is close, that should read $37K. But then I found another at a different dealer, basically same car with same miles but in Silver, for $29K. So what's the deal? Is Edmunds off or are these guys selling these dirt cheap?

Heck, my wife might let me trade the Volvo for something like THAT. :)

    Eh, who am i kidding?

But, on the more realistic side ... an E320 maybe .....

    '11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S

Terry and gang, Steve at the Odyssey forum suggested that I ask your expert opinion on a 2002 honda odyssey that i am about to buy from a private seller:

    Location: San Francisco bayarea
    Year: 2002, Honda Odyssey LX
    Body style: 4dr
    Engine: V6
    DriveLine: FWD, automatic
    Mileage: 42400
    Color: Red/gray cloth
Major options: power sliding door, power driver seat, alloy wheel, roof rack, single CD, privacy glass, quad seating, Rear air, power windows/locks
    Condition: good in general
a few small chips on the front
a couple of small dings on the right side
    Warrenty: none

Kelly's blue book says trade in 16200 and private party 18400. However, Edmunds says that trade-in is 15100, and private party is 16300. Which one is more accurate?

Kelly's blue book also states the wholesale/retail breakdown is 18375 and 22525 respectively.

So I am a bit confused on which one to use? The seller has agreed to somewhere around 17500, is this a good deal? A small car dealer that i talked to said that at auction, it would fetch around 16500, don't know if that's true...

    Thanks.

....... In the land of the Scott Peterson case ....

02 Ody LX, 42k, color is kinda "iffy" for a Van, power pack, quads, cd, power seats, hot and cold running air, rack .... if it's clean, deep round things, no visits to Maaco, no Jack the Ripper interior and the service is all there .. then trade side, it's worth in and around the super high $14's, low $15's ....

$16,5 at the auction.? .. what auction.? I'll make sure I never go to that one - $16,5 for a EX maybe, not a LX, did you see any funny lookin' white powder around this guy .. ?

Anyway ..... every once and awhile Edmunds gets one right, so we agree at the low $15's on the trade side ... down Retail Rd, $17,500 *asking*.? .. the guy isn't in the tree's, but a fair price for both would be $16,9ish if it needs -0- ........... :)

Let me know how it goes.....

    Thanks.

    Hi Terry,

The wife and I are about to buy an 03 Tahoe wanted your opinion. The vehicle has the following:

    03 Chevy Tahoe LS
    4WD
    22500
    PW Windows/Locks/Mirrors
    3rd row seat
    rear air
    am/fm/cassette/single cd player
    roof rack
    power driver's seat

The asking price is $31998 but after looking at edmunds and kbb we want to stay in the 25K range. Is $25000 to low a price to offer for the vehicle?

    thanks for the info Terry.

The guy was asking 18900 to begin with, i talked him down to 17500, thinking that it was an EX (which i thought was a good deal).

Checking autotrader.com, its listing for similar ones starts around >19500...

So i think i am going to pass...

You are trying to trade a 2004 EXL for .... a 2004 EXL???? Or are you talking about the new 2005 Odyssey?

Brand New Wheels (Chrome Plated Steel)
    New plugs/wires/belt/hoses
    New Brakes
    No Insurance claims
    In fantastic condition.

              ================================

Okay, lets take a look here ... it's a 00 2WD 2dr V6 Sport, we have the red with the grey guts, we have 60k, we have the power pack, we have dem boards, hot and cold running breeze, solar glass, new stoppers/brakes/wheels and wires ...... if the paint is good and shiny, no love bug battles, no K-Mart collisions, no faded interiors and no paint by numbers .. then trade side, in and around the super tall $3's, low low $4's, might "maybe" "could" get a dealer to wander towards the $5,0 figure ... the miles are a big help, but the 2dr/2wd and the color might hold this one back - thank goodness for the new stuff ....... what were they offerering.?

I'm stunned by this number, Terry. Do these things sink like a stone in general? Or is it a combo of features (color, location) that makes it so low? As a complete novice, I would've thought that 2WD would be fine in FL - shows what I know.

    ...... The 4wd would be a helper by "around" $1,000 ish ish ish ish, so no biggie in Hurricane alley ... it's the 2DR that kills SUV's .. it's kinda like a 2DR mini-van or hiring a one armed paper hanger ............................. ;^}
