I have a 2001 Pontiac Gran Prix SE in show room condition. It has 36,000 miles. Options:

CD-single,power driver seat, AM/FM Radio,Dual Climate Control, Cruise, new tires, power windows, alloy wheels.

KBB says about $5800 trade in and Edmunds was closer to $8000. Which is more realistic? I live in Kansas.

    Hello again,

I was wondering what the real world trade in value for my brother-in-laws 2000 Jeep Wrangler is.It is a bright red sport model w/ABS,hard top,5 speed, large tires,oh yeah and it is the 6 cylinder. The car is actually his wifes, and they are expecting their first child in August therefore they need a larger vehicle. The milegae just turned 50000 and the zip code is 02330.

Also what would a real world retail value of a 2001 Ford F150 super crew 4wd be?They are looking at one of those with 99000 miles in black.Thank you for your time.

    2004 VW Passat GLS 4Motion
    1.8L Turbo; manual
    AWD
    28000
Blue (Graphite, I think)/ Grey Leatherette

sunroof; AWD; monsoon 8 speaker stereo; heated seats; 16" alloys (i think)

generall good condition, a couple knicks in the paint, a little dirt in the interior, but overall very well taken care of; trunk very very tight, but i'm sure i can get that fixed b/f purchase; maintence records are all there (an absolute necessity w/ the 1.8T); not sure of tires, but i think their fine

minor fender bender in rear, but no damage shows, probably explains the problem w/ the trunk; Carfax report shows everything is fine; one previous owner who leasee.

I'm looking to buy this car from a non VW dealer (Hyundai), and am wondering what a good price would be. They started at $19700, which is definately high, I think, but I'm looking for an objetive opinion of what would be a fair price for me.

    Thanks!

Terry will need more information on the condition of both cars. The items in red above the message entry area are the suggested template.

How minor is minor? $500/$5000? And what do you mean by the trunk being "tight?" If you mean difficult to open and close, that's common on VW's. If you mean the panel gaps are not jam-up perfect, the car wasn't repaired properly.
  • gblackwellgblackwell Member Posts: 7
Under $500 bucks damage according to dealer; no accidents on carfax. By tight, I mean hard to open and close. Seems like this is imminently fixable....?

    Terry,

I am looking at a Demo BMW 330Ci with ~800 miles. What is a reasonable offer for it? THe MSRP is $40k and the salesman offered it to me for $42.5k. How much of a discount can I expect for a demo BMW. From the BMW 3-series board, a good going rate for a new bimmer seems to be around 2k off of MSRP. Can I get below invoice for the demo?

    Thanks,

I agree, I always miss the really juicy stuff...

Any chance of an "outtakes" archive? Like an NC-17 "stupid criminals" segment-ish kind of thing...

I did't say it was a _good_ idea...

    Mr. T,

On the Solara, her ins. co. did their "Oh, we're so sorry to hear about it, if only we'd known sooner. We'll be happy to do you the favor of paying for the estimated repairs less deductible..." (I'm sure they mean the low end of the $4-5,000 body shop estimate).

Soooo, I did the "Gee, she told you about this the night it happened and I see this as a tort, not a contractual claim, so please send a check for the repairs + DV + rental + attorney fees + my 40 hours valuing and comparing this scenario + etc."

Now that we've established that the final number will be somewhere between $5k and $20k the real fun starts...

I'm not trying to rip anyone off, so can I do a sanity check with you?

I figure to be "made whole", I need:
    - Cost of repairs ($4-5,000)
    - Diminished value (30-70% off asking price)
I found 2 Solara 2001/3 comps on eBay.
Wrecked & unrepaired was 70% discount
Wrecked & repaired was 30% discount
Both are actual sales, not wild hopes.
Average ask on a clean 01 was $20,5 (NADA, Edmunds, KBB, Intellichoice)
    - Incidentals (Rental/loss of use, research, tow)
Loss of use is a slam dunk, but I'm not sure it is reasonable to charge them for the hotel I had to get while recovering the car at 2am 50 miles away from home. On the other hand, as the attorneys say, "but for" the incident I'd have been in bed at the time.

Is this anywhere near your reality?

    -Greg

    Lem-meister,

I hear ya, I do. (I like honey, though why you'd want to catch flies with or without it... Anyway.)

I figure it goes one of two ways - they see I have detailed research behind my claims and their lawyers see a legal theory that might stand up, OR I shot off all my ammo before the battle even started.

In the first case their best move is to FedEx the check to minimize the loss of use. In the second, they stall through a small claims trial. Time will tell.

    Silver with red interior
    heated seats only major option
normal dings and scratches for a 99
    tires about 50%
brakes 7,000 miles on new ones
    all maintenance done at dealer
    no accidents,insurance claims etc
Trade in and private sale numbers please. Thx in advance
    =============================

Yardley ..? where the heck is Yardley, is that by the Old Spice rack ... ?

In PA .......... we have a 99 SLK with 67,000 almost kinda maybe actually high miles, good color for anywhere, cold pack, tires are low, stoppers are high and you say it has *all* of the service ...

These little dudes are like Audi TT's and Boxsters, they gotta be super clean and super nice to get any money - and low miles are a big factor, and this one would be considered almost high ... If ~ no paint, no curb burners, no slash and run interior, trade side: in and around the super tall $11's, low/mid $12's, might maybe "could" see a deal wander towards the $13 figure, maybe - but this one needs a few things ...... down Retail Rd, a visit to the Dent Dr, finish any service, new rubber, a come to Jesus detail, a glorious 4/5 liner Ad in the Big paper, and $17,900 *asking*, you can cry and whimper at $16/$17,5 ~ but take it ... the "books" show big money for these, but there's lots of 20k/30k SLK's out there, and "for sale" ...

Let me know how it goes....

..... 01 Mitsu GS Eclipse with 41k, auto, good color for the area, slider, tunes, power pack, maybe needs a few things .....

No battles at Wal-mart, no curb side kisses .. then trade side, in and around the super ultra tall $6's low/mid $7's, might maybe get a dealer to wander towards the $8 figure if it's really a nice one, maybe .. you're in real good shape as far as trade money goes, the miles and the auto saves this one ....... why would you let a few hundred get between you and your new vehicle ...? .... whats your pay-off ....?

If there's a real world purchase value discussion direct me there.
    But a coworker noticed a 99 Catera
    Near Chicago area
Says it appeared to have all options when he checked on an internet pricing site
    Everything appeared near perfect.

    Has 7000 miles.
    Asking price is $13000.

What's a real world price. I believe it's at a lot rather than from a private owner.

    Terry,

It is always a joy to read your commentary, and to see how dead on accurate you are with your pricing. So, if I could ask for a little help (again) for what may be one of the strangest trades ever. I'm looking at:

    2003 Chevy Silverado 2500HD LS
    4x4, auto
    6.0 V8 gas
4 door Ecab (not crew cab)
    38,800 miles
    pewter over charcoal cloth
6 in the dash CD, tow package, Rhino lining spray in bedliner, camper shell that matches the body color
    dual zone climate control
    tubular running boards
new shoes, great shape for a car of its age and mileage, doesn't look like it was ever really used as a truck.
It is at my friend the dealer's high end (BMW, MB, Lexus etc) lot and he doesn't have a clue what to do with this thing.
He's asking $20,500, but has a couple hundred to play with (he gave me a $20,300 + TTL number)
It is in Brunswick, Georgia, which is halfway between Jacksonville and Savannah.
    Details/pics here:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=452- 9786040

My trade, or more likely down retail road is:
    1997 Mercedes C230
    2.3 (non-blower) 4 cyl, 5 speed AT
    smoke silver over Parchment Tex
    89,000 miles
tires have ~20,000 miles on them
    Am/FM/no CD
    auto climate
    slider
it is in great shape for the age and miles, but it has a scratch about 2 inches long on the rear bumper and a crack (from THIS MORNING) where some woman backed into my front bumper with the hitch on her Grand Cherokee that is about a 1/2" semi circle. Will get the body shop to either fix or replace the bumper cover (with her $$)
For retail road: it has an extended warranty through 11/30/05 or 100,000 miles. Has no use to a dealer I know.
All stamps in the service book
no paintwork, hits, runs, errors other than the above. Southern car with no salt (never been north of Charleston)
    Also in Brunswick, Georgia

What sayeth the oracle? Thanks as always!

$7-8000 will buy a newer Prizm, or also a very recent Taurus/Sable. The 4WD is probably unnecessary in California, or at least it will be once the Noah's Ark thing passes through. You will have increased maintenance and fuel costs with a 4WD SUV, compared to the Prizm or Taurus mentioned above. You could also get a recent Grand Am or Alero program car for $7-8000. The GM V6 models have some issues with intake manifold gaskets, but the four cylinder is a safer bet. Mitsubishi is not known for their reliability. I think you can do better for $7800.

....... Miles are Super low low low low ..

So .. if it has all the stuff, cold package, slider, chromee's and we don't have any hail, tornado, hurricane, stolen or Moose damage - and no I didn't forget to pay my insurance and my car was in the body shop for 2 years stuff, and it's just a baby doll that was in Grandma's garage under a Egyptian cotton cover .... then the dealer might have paid the super ultra tall $6's low/mid $7's, might maybe "could" have lost his friggin' mind and dropped the low low low low low $8's in it, cuz' that color ain't no winner ......

$13,000..? .. thats a great price if you live in Tibet and you hang around with the Dali Llama .. $9,900 ~ and $10,5 would be the end of the world ..... you can buy 01's all day long with 25k, new rubber and all the stuff for $13,0 ... it's an 8 year old Catera, not a boat built by Cobalt ........ :)

    ........ WOW.! ...

    Now there's a description .....!

Nice lookin' rig, looks clean - great pics ... if it's in the same condition in Chi-Town, then we have a 03 MDX Touring package, we have 26,000 short miles, we have OEM stuff coming out of our ears and we do the 10 step boogie on the detail twice a year ..... if it's all there, then trade side, in and around the super tall $27's low/mid $28's ... down that windy way to Retail Rd, $31,900 *asking* and $30,5/$31,5 should find a new owner .... tax savings on the difference in Illinois, right ..?

    Let me know what happens.!

    ...l.o.l.... I was driving backwards..??

$9,000 ..? does that surprise me ...? aaahh No.! ..

Thats why it's important to be there "at" the tear down .. when body shops get an open checkbook from the insurance company, $6,000 turns into $9,000 almost everytime .. thats why it should have been totaled ..

Always make sure your in the drivers seat when it comes to insurance claims - if not, they will drop you into the trunk every chance they get .................... ;)

IF ~ it's super nice, no battles at K-mart, no Popeyes chicken, no uh oh it's Maaco and no freedom fries ... then trade side, in and around the low/mid $6's, might "maybe" get a dealer to climb towards the $7 figure if it's super nice, super clean and it needs -0- .......

    DON'T forget the update ..!!!

    Hi Terry:

Thank you for the quick reply and pricing details … I will definitely let you know the details when it heads our way. Trades in Illinois do save on the entire value of trade in taxes so the smallish TIV vs. PP sale delta works out pretty close between the two.

Good Luck to you and yours.

Omaha, Nebraska Just wondering what I can expect to get for trading in my 03 Gmc Envoy SLT.
    Black
4wd, miles 35,200, Dark Pewter leather interior, Has 6 disc changer, Bose system, Dvd, heated seats, it has all the options except the Premium alloy wheels. It is in excellent condition both the interior and the exterior. Tires are maybe 35-40% worn? Brakes are fine i dont know how much wear on those. Oil changes as scheduled every 3000. I appreciate your time and look forward to your reply. Thanks, Jeff

    Terry,

You da man. I've been stressing hard about not being able to get the Unlimited (I'm like a little kid when it comes to this stuff).

Your numbers sound great. I hope i can get low 7k's (or higher of course). I'm hoping with the time of year and slow car sales they will be willing to do some dealing.

My payoff on the Eclipse is 4,772 or there abouts.
I've done the numbers hundereds of times (back to the being a kid thing) and i needed 7k trade to bump my downpayment up to get my monthlys where i need them.

    Thanks Again!!!

    Terry,
    I know you are busier than a one armed paper hanger around here. So when you get a chance, no hurry, I need a trade in and retail road value on this;

    Location: Philadelphia
    Year/Make/Model:2002 Dodge Durango SLT
    Body Style: 4 Door wagon
    Engine: 4.7l ,5 speed Automatic
    Drive line: 4WD
    Mileage:36,500 miles
Color: Black exterior / Gray cloth interior
Major Options: Cd , Running boards, 16' alloy wheels,3 road row seat, power windows & locks, keyless remote
    Condition:
Exterior has several nicks , but they have been touched up and are not noticeable, Hand washed every week and gets a good detail every 4 mos. ,so no swirlies in the paint.
Interior gets the same shampoo and cleaning every 4 mos.,no rips but drivers mat is a little worn.

Tires - 100%,just replaced this week with new original equip. Goodyears.
Brakes - Less than 6,000 miles on new rotors. Pads are still good.
Maintenance - oil changed every 3k, 30k service is done, everything done by the book, and Ball joint recall has been taken care of.
Other: No accidents or repaints. It has been well taken care of both mecanically and appearence wise.

Because I am starting to put on more miles per year than previously , I am going to downsize to either a used 2003 Pontiac Vibe or Ford Escape XLT(2wd)with about the same miles, hopefully as even up as possible.Any input on those would be appreciated.

Thanks Terry, and I know it has been said before but , You da Man!

    Terry,

I am looking at a Demo BMW 330Ci with ~800 miles. What is a reasonable offer for it? THe MSRP is $44k and the salesman offered it to me for $42.5k. How much of a discount can I expect for a demo BMW. From the BMW 3-series board, a good going rate for a new bimmer seems to be around 2k off of MSRP. Can I get below invoice for the demo?

    Thanks,

Condition? Tires, brakes, maintenance, and body damage? Hack-n-slash interior? Terry will need some more information to give you a realistic value.

This one's for a buddy of mine. Not what you see everyday at the auction, but any insight is appreciated.
1970 Jaguar XKE convert. 60,000 original miles. Mint condition, former Barrett-Jackson car. Light blue.
Don't have much more info yet, but will be seeing the car in a couple of days. Currently in Atlanta area. Where does one look to find a value range on something like this?

    ==========================

I think someone posted some info on this already ... that said, their value is based on a whooole potpourri of things .. condition and history of course, "real miles", type of paint, type of new parts, type of top, OEM/aftermarket - and anything can effect the value, there's a big difference between rebuilding a nice one and just adding parts, the proper lens cap can make a difference of $5grand ... I would need alot of info on this dude - but here's a "ballpark" ---- and I do mean Ballpark.!

1970 JAGUAR XKE Series II Dsp/HP Eng

    Fair --- Good --- Exc --- Show --- Loan

    21,000 30,000 45,000 52,000 H27,000

    CONVERTIBLE 1969-71 4.2/265 6C

I mean, they can be worth anything based on the humidity, the barometric pressure and if Mickey is going to marry Minnie .....

What Barrett-Jackson did he buy it at, and what did he pay ..?
