    Update on the 01 Cherokee 4x4 w/ 108k...

My friend put it on a lift at the mechanics and lost his enthusiasm. It's leaking a little of this and a little of that, the clutches in the t/case might could need replaced; he's looking at $1,500 to bring this puppy up to snuff... on top of which I think the dealer might have gotten a little enthusiastic when he valued the car.

Miles wouldn't scare me in a properly maintained Cherokee, but this isn't the one.

BTW, once again it shows what difference it makes when you're familiar with a particular model. From investing $20 and a couple of hours, my friend has learned that (i) he wants "a" Cherokee cuz he likes it, (ii) how to tell certain defects, like a driveline hum that he heard but couldn't interpret before. Or how to tell when the driveline is binding up. And (iii) he's developing a "feel" for these cars.
It makes such a difference when you evaluate a car that you know well vs. something new.

    Thanks again! -Mathias

Well, you just hit the nail on the head ....It makes such a difference when you evaluate a _________ that you know well vs. something new. .... "lets fill in the blanks ..."

I just spent the last 4/5 days house hunting (out of state) .. I started my search about 8/9 months ago .. ya know, stuff like area, weather, community type, style, size, neighbors opinions, crime, etc ~ distance to the liquor store ..l.o.l... ... when everyone else is looking at closets and carpets, I'm wondering why one side of the wall is painted and the other isn't, when everyone else is checking out the bathrooms and cabinets, I'm trying to guess why the left side of the property has been filled recently and the rest is even ........ Realtors just Loooove me ..l.o.l... .. knowing how to evaluate things is a good thing ............................ :shades:

House hunting with a detail freak can be fun.....just ask my wife...took 3 months for us and we bought in the same area as we lived in. Everything we looked at was new construction, but I would scoff at one or two things and we would be out of there....finally I found something we could agree on....I had never seen her agree so quickly once I said I liked it. Anyways....here's a repost when you get a chance.

    Location: Dallas, TX
    2003 Toyota Matrix XRS - 6 Speed
Only came in a Wagon and Front wheel drive for the XRS.
    Mileage: 17400
Color: Indigo Ink (dark blue) outside Black leather/suede inside (Gulf States Toyota option)
Options - Power moonroof, Factory Navigation system, Tinted Windows, Side Airbags, Factory keyless entry. 4 wheel disc ABS is standard as are the 16 inch alloys. Tires are about 50%. All service has been done (3 month oil changes with Mobil 1, never hit miles) and I have the paperwork in the glovebox. Interior is hovered in. Exterior has one ding driver side front quarter panel (I miss having a Saturn). Front lip is a little scuffed, though it can only be seen if you're under the car. I had one door ding near the drivers door egde that required painting the entire side of the car. It was done at Service King (major repair chain in DFW) when the car was just one month old. I didn't pay for it, the idiot who dinged me did. Everything else is fine. It has been garaged whenever not in use (which is often given the low miles). I'd like the retail row and trade in. I know the 6 speed will hold it back, but it's the only way they come now.

Didn't take long for us, we found the house we wanted and made an offer. Too bad the owner was less than honest...........he sold it out from under us AFTER we had a mortgage approval and everything done. It all made sense after that happened, he had refused to do an earnest money agreement. Ah well, the house is up for sale again and I just laugh, not going there again.

That deal reminded me of some car deals that I've seen.

Oh, man......you should try house hunting in the Metro-Boston area. It's become one of the "7 Circles of Hades". Slightly less painful than apt. hunting in NYC.

So I've been house hunting in adjacent N.E. states. Problem is, I'm addicted to this great FM classical & jazz station in Boston. So now, when I'm house hunting in Maine, or wherever, I take along one of those little Tivoli radios, with a 6 ft. antenna, hang the antenna out of the highest window in the house, & start evaluating the house in terms of the FM reception.

I can't figure out why some of the realtors seem annoyed by this!

    cheers, woody

I currently have a 93 Honda Accord. I am now looking to upgrade and I recently saw a commercial posting that all trade-ins will be valued at $4000. My question is how is this possible when my Honda will not be worth 4K even in an utopian society. Do car dealerships add that 4K somewhere in the contract? :confuse:
  • steine13steine13 Member Posts: 2,825
"Do car dealerships add that 4K somewhere in the contract?"

They sure do. It just happens to be YOUR 4k.

Ignore those ads. It's probably a good idea to ignore those dealerships as well. But you can usually get the same deal anywhere in the same general area. I'd always go to the dealer that's got the best reputation for service, so long as it's close to either my house or my workplace.

    Good luck,

76,000 miles, $8,000 starting bid. $4,000 over typical private party retail.

It has like you know, real fancy rims and tires on it and a "bangin" stereo system. Must be what makes it worth $8,000, NOT. :P
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,327
Don't forget the 12" amp in the trunk... $8000 doesn't even make the reserve. :lemon:

Just from the grainy pictures, the tint looks bad at the top of the rear window, and the pinstripe (or maybe just a shadow) on the rear quarter is uneven... And those look like a cheap set of aftermarket wheels, in a plus-zero size (so the tires could be reused).
  • idntnvuidntnvu Member Posts: 254
Yeah, and it's a "Kea." This sounds to me like some teenager trying to sell their car online, so they can move up in the world and buy a Handah Sivik and put a 15 inch "amp" in it and maybe even some "spinnerz." lol...
I feel sorry for whoever buys that thing. Not that they'd be getting a bad car, but that they have to buy it from a moron.

.......... Just been a little busy with my dog dancing classes and my accordion lessons ..

This is the one you were "thinkin' about painting and losing your butt in the process, right ...?

All the way from New Yack City.? ... (not a Touring and not a Enthusiast, right.?) we have an 04 G35 El Coupe' with maybe 7k, color is good anywhere, we have the prem pack, the Bozo sound, the auto thing, slider, we have a minor kiss to the bow and we have a new bumper hangin' off the transom ..... trade side, in and around the $20ish figure, might "maybe" get a dealer to meander towards the $21 figure, but this one has been used as a pin ball machine, so I doubt it ...... whats your pay-off...?

You have to get everything in writing, up front, & preferably have a good R.E. atty do it. But if a house buyer, or seller, reneges before the closing, there may not be that much you can do about it, even with a signed standard contract. (You can sue them, but that costs more $$, etc. etc.)

How about this one? This is for a co-worker, she is itching to trade it.

2004 Titan king cab XE 4x4, no options, canteen green/grey guts, 2k miles, hole in the front bumper about the size of a baseball near the tow hook and a scratch on the driver's side door (somebody keyed it) about 3-4 inches long.

I keep telling her she's stuck with it, but she won't listen. She owes $32k on it, I paid less than that for my LE CC 4x4.

    So, what say you?
  • 03cobra03cobra Member Posts: 37
    Six speed manual.
The only option offered were chrome wheels and it doesn't have them.
    Location is Minneapolis.

Thanks in advance for your help.

This is a re-post from several days ago. I'm considering selling my 2000 Yukon and would like to know the real market value. It's been an awesome truck; I purchased it new, and it still looks and runs like new.

    Location: 25401 (martinsburg, wv)
    2000 GMC Yukon SLE
5.3L engine, 2WD, electronic traction control, CD, Cassette, Running boards, rear air AND rear heat.
Bright red w/ silver bottom (beautiful color, and not many bright red Yukons or Tahoes around).
96K miles. Absolutely perfect condition (well okay, maybe 98-99% condition
All maint records, all oil change records, Michelin Cross Terrains with 70% of tread left, good brakes.

I owe nothing on it; and I'm paying cash for my next vehicle - so I'm probably looking at either selling it to Carmax or Retail Road. What's the verdict; friends?

2001 Mustang Deluxe V6 Coupe, Dark Red
    Wilmington, NC
    40k, Auto, all power
    looks new inside/out, (drove) great

Some numb-nuts pulled out right in front of it, it's at the body shop (at the dealership) now... they (and I) think it *might* be close to totaled, I'd say *at least* $4k in damage (both quarter panels, passenger door panel, bumper, hood, grill, headlights, radiator, lots of twisted metal under the hood, airbags did NOT deploy-- engine ok (belts squeal because of contact with damage), trans ok, wheels/tires ok (rub sidewalls because of damage)- waiting for the adjuster... and we almost had this one paid off!!! (of course)

    My questions are:

If it is going to be fixed, what is a reasonable amount to ask for as a Dimished Value payment from the other guy's insurance company? (How much less will this be worth)

Also, if they are going to total it, should we try for full retail value, or will they only give trade value, or what?

A repost and an update. I'm looking to purchase my leased WRX. The lease covers 45K miles and ends in about a month. The bank is claiming the auction value is $14,800, and my contract price is $14,200 after taxes. I haven't told the bank that my mileage is well under 45K. What's it really worth?

    Seattle, WA
    2002 Subaru WRX
    4dr wagon
    2.0 liter 4 cyl. turbo w/ 5 speed manual
    AWD
    18,000 miles
    Midnight blue exterior, black interior
options include security system & upgraded stereo
Condition: interior is very clean. The rear bumper has a scratch, but the rest of the exterior is good.
I've followed all scheduled maintenance, and it hasn't needed any additional repairs. Tires and brakes are average for the mileage.

    Thanks,

Hi! I have a 2002 Saturn SL1 with 43,000 miles on it. I got the extended warranty, and I have a year left, or up until 60,000 miles. The pay-off on my loan is around $3,000. I'd really like a new Saturn VUE. Do you think now's a good time to trade my car in or should I just wait until next year when it's paid off (and the warranty will be expired)? Thanks in advance, any thoughts are much appreciated! :)

here's the info, thanks for your expertise:

East Rutherford, NJ 07073 (suburb of NYC)
    2001 Accord EX
    Coupe
    3.0L V6 SMPI SOHC 24V/ 4 speed auto
    Front Wheel Drive
    34k
    Silver
Sunroof, Power Drivers Seat, Anti-Lock Brakes, Automatic Climate Control, Cruise Control, Alloys, four air bags (front & side), leather, 6 disc in dash cd and cassette - all standard - I think an ash tray was optional (no ash tray).
Interior is excellent (black leather) weathertech floor mats, original mats unused and in storage (will be given with sale).
Exterior is silver paint is in very good shape, shines like day one. Car has always been garage parked. One owner bought new.
One dent behind drivers side door - sometimes you see it, sometimes you don't. No paint damage just a dent. Couple marks on the nose (from small stones etc). Rear lower bumper has three small marks/scrapes from bumper parking. Not so obvious but can be seen on close inspection.
Original tires, rotated by dealer on honda suggested schedule. All maintainence (oil changes/tranny flush/air filter, etc) done through Honda service - again followed schedule set by Honda. Rear breaks done a month ago. Transmission replaced under warrenty. All records available.

Car is clean. No accidents/insurance claims/repaints. Still very new by most used car standards. In 2001 I wanted a grown up car but lately I'm eyeing sporty hatchbacks like Acura RSX, Honda Si and Scion tC. The car is paid off - I should just stick with it save myself a payment but just curious if it's worth letting go.

So should I just keep it or take my chances with something new?

Down in sunny Ft. Lauderdale, we have a car we might want to sell soon.
    - '01 Altima GXE Ltd. Ed.
    - Titanium Frost
    - 76k miles
    - paint good. 2 nasty scratches on the front hood by some freaky mall rat. replaced passenger side sied view mirror, hit and run in parking lot, in the original black plastic, not painted yet
    - almost new sneakers...about 75%
    -8 way power drivers seat
    - needs new floor mats
    - nice driver
    - all service done around 60k
The wife wants a Corolla LE or a Volvo S40.
Just wondering Terry what to expect. Yota guy said between $4550. and $5k for the Altima... I was hoping for around $6k.
Any thoughts wood be greatly appreciated. Been a tough year for the wife and I medically and with her mom's death, and she wants to treat herself to something nice.
    What says the master?
    TIA as usual.

Looking for a private party number:

2000 Nissan Frontier XE crew cab
    Silver
    3.3 V6 5-spd
    2WD
    78k miles
A/C, Cruise, PW, PL, Aftermarket CD
Fairly good condition in/out, with some scratches in the bed and a minor crease on the tailgate, 3" long
    Tires 60-70%
    Provo, UT

Now the biggie: Salvage title, from theft recovery. I looked pretty closely and couldn't see any evidence that it has ever been hit / resprayed. I can probably pick it up for around 6-6.5k. Is that enough of a discount for the salvage title? Seems like cheap money for a quad cab.

    Thanks,
    Jason

I would suggest talking to the body shop manager, they have alot of influence with the appraiser in judging hidden damage, which probably will get it totaled.

you should get retail N.A.D.A value as a payoff.

If the same exact vehicle costs more to replace yours.

say nada is $7500 and the same exact car cost $8000 at a dealer
send in a price quote for the higher value.

thats from what i have heard from my body shop friends in Mass.

as far as diminished value i have no clue, but with everyone getting carfax reports for vehicles i would definately ask for one. it lowers the resale value.

    my 2 cents
  • hyperlucidhyperlucid Member Posts: 6
personally i would drive it till the warranty expires, since you paid for it and probably isnt transferrable. it wouldnt add value to the trade in
  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
The warranty adds zero to trade in value.
If it is tranferable to a new owner, check the papers, it will make it MUCH easier to get top dollar if you chose to sell it yourself. It will also make it easier to sell yourself, but you will have to get it ready.
All maintenance must be up to date, super 100% detail in and out, title in hand.

Myself, I would not get rid of it now, it is almost paid off and you know the previous owner. At the very least it should stay in the family.

I doubt you would get as high as $4,000 for it on trade as it is a $5,999 dealer retail as it sits. Good thing is with your warranty, you can start with an asking price near dealer retail, to sell it yourself.

Vikings territory, right .? ..... the miles are loooow and the color is ho-hum .. no snow, no salt.? .. if the paint is puuuurfect, we have deep round things, no KFC rolling around the seats, no I backed over my neighbors dog house, just a nice one with no slash and run top ... if so, then trade side, in and around the tall $24ish region, might maybe get a dealer to wander over to the $25ish zipcode .... not too many of these around, 2 months ago it was worth -0- in your area, now with your 3 month summer, it's worth a little cake ....

Hi, I trying to figure out what my car is worth. It seems like there's a big range of what people are asking for similar cars.

    Here's the info:

    Minneapolis, MN
    1996 Honda Civic EX 4dr
    Manual transmission
    1.6 liter SOHC VTEC
    110,000 miles
    Green exterior, tan interior
    ABS, factory cd changer
    Very clean inside and out.
A couple small door dings in driver's door and tiny chips on the leading edge of the hood.
    No rust.
Tires have about 30% tread left.
All scheduled maintenance performed (on schedule) at Honda dealer.

Looking to trade it in or sell (probably sell). What do you think?

    $20K - 21K in trade for a 2004 Infiniti G35 coupe auto with premium?

Wow, that's good for me, because I'm in the market to buy one. But dealers are asking crazy high-prices if that trade-in value is true. I'm seeing asks easily north of $32K. Even if the car were in better condition, which made it's trade value $23K - $24K, that would mean a 8K markup at least. There seems to be a pretty big discrepancy there. :confuse: :confuse: ">

Does this mean I could probably talk a dealer down from the $30K heights, if he only paid $23K for it on trade?

Why don't you buy the guy's 2004 Infiniti G35 coupe who was wanting to sell his? Or at least, widen your search to include private owner sales.

Private owners are asking as much as the dealers. Autotrader has the cheapest dealer at $31K, and the average dealer at $34K. The cheapest private seller is at $29.5. I know these prices are negotiable, but settling at, say, $26K (which means the dealer is grossing $4K), means bargaining down $7K or about 22%, which seems pretty far to go to me.

If these really are only pulling $22K at auction that is.

In any event, I hate dealing with private sellers on big-ticket items. Typically they don't have title in hand, and need the cash for a payoff. It adds a layer of hassle I'm not all that interested in. It's a pain to sell a $25K+ car privately and a pain to buy one too. I could be convinced, though.

I don't understand also why this G35 coup depreciate so much but...Terry is the expert and he was right on my Envoy XL trade in value back in Jan.

I used to own brand new Avalon, Camry and Altima. Depreciation on Avalon around 2.5K/year and Camry or Altima a little over 2K/year.

Last Sept. I got a new '04 Envoy XL. In Jan, I don't really like the car (actually I never like SUVs). So, I wanted to trade in for G35 coup.I asked Terry for trade in value. He said around 21K and that's what I got. I'm a little upset because I lose 4.5K for a 4 months old car (but it was like 1 year old car because it's '04). Now...seem... G35 is even a lot worst, 12K for 1 year?

I also see that both dealers and private parties try to get top $$ for this car so I don't know why the trade in value is so low. Also, KBB rates this coup as the least depreciation car for 3 years in the row. :confuse:

    ***** DISCLAIMER ******* I'm Not the expert *******

The reason that this particular G35 was so low was that it had been wrecked, and the repair, as described, still seemed somewhat evident.

Not too many posts ago, Terry was describing the HUGE hit an upscale car takes when it comes out of a repair shop. Especially if the repair is obvious.

I could be wrong, your mileage may vary...
