Correct - -I drove off with 5k and a new to me Audi which is quite nice. The kids are enjoying the rear bun warmers (AC way up, bun warmers on).

It's a deal for sure. Probably not the greatest but good enough.

This is a second request (no biggie -- how often do you get valuable advice for free!?!)

I'm looking to trade-in or sell my much loved but little used car. I'm moving to New Zealand, so won't be buying another. I'm not in a lot of hurry to sell, since I'm leaving in a couple of months. Any hints for someone in my situation?

    Details:

    San Francisco Bay Area, CA
    1999 VW Passat GLS sedan
    1.8L Turbo Tiptronic
    2WD
34,000 mi -- I mostly take public transit
Windsor Blue (metallic dark blue)/Beige cloth
    automatic, moonroof, alloy wheels
    Condition:
major parking wear on back bumper
two long, very visible scratches on rear trunk
a few minor scratches and dings on rest of body
faint, medium-size coffee stain on front passenger seat
moonroof sometimes quirky but does what you want after a couple of tries
    rear seat beverage holder broken
no kids, but sometimes a dog co-pilot
interior has been smoked in, with windows open & ashtray used infrequently
replaced floor mats with grooved all-weather type
    new tires 2,500 mi ago
brake pads and rotors replaced 1,000 mi ago
    maintenance at appropriate mileage markers
3 panels on driver side were fixed and repainted ($2700 repair) after accident

I'm leaning toward getting the scratches, dings and parking wear fixed before selling.

    1999 Mazda 626 LX
    4DR Sedan.
    Dark Green,
    Auto
    85,000 miles.
The car is in good condition, but some dings on exterior. I had to replace the mirror after it was knocked off by another car, and I didn't bother to have it painted to match the exterior of the car. The tires are new, just replaced three months ago. May need some minor maintenance.
    ===================================

So your from "da Bronx" eh..?

Nothing much of a description here -- 4 banger..??

.... we got 85k, we got the no sale green thing going on, it's an LX, power pack, auto, probably grey or tan cloth guts and no slider ....... well, if the rubber is waaay deep and the air is reeeaall cold, all the "K" service is been done and we haven't used this dude for a dodge em' car ..... then trade side, in and around the $2,500 range, might "could" maybe find a dealer that will stagger towards the $3,0 figure ... if it needs stuff, start deducting ...

Good luck and let me know what happens.!

It's ok to repost ... sometimes I "just think" I've answered a post, plus I talk to myself alot and see things that aren't there .... so reposting is a good thing ....... New Zealand eh', my g/f's brother lives there.

    Great description, thanks (dog co-pilot.....?)
........ in the land of Aaarnold, we have a 99 Passat GLS see-dan .. it's a 1.8t, auto, we got the no sale blue with the tan guts, miles are waaaaay low, we got the slider, wheels, new rubber new stoppers and currently have a bunch of little kisses front and back, and a few little meteorite hits, slider switch is getting weak, we have some smoke drifting around and we had $2,500+ in some body work ....... based on your description, trade side, in and around the low/mid $4's maybe might see the low low low low low low low low low $5's if the dealer go's blind and misses the all of the body work, past and present .....

Low miles are a big selling point, but dealers don't like to rebuild cars to get em' .... me personally, I would send this dudette down Retail Rd, finish any service, take it to Dr. Dent and have all of the nit stuff done, then travel down to see the detail gods and make it glow in the dark, have all the service/history/records super-glued to the dash, then drop a super 4/5 liner Fat daddy Ad in the Big paper and: $8,900 *asking* and send it south for the first real $7,9/$8,5 ...... properly done it won't last long, if ya nickel and dime it you'll end up giving it away ...

    don't forget the update.!!!

    Terry,

Update on the white X5(47K) 3.0 loaded my neighbor had sitting in my yard. Not sold yet (asking 27,900) and he moved it somewhere else near where he works. Got a few calls, but nothing serious. You were right about the trade-in. He bought a new loaded Grand Caravan (needed the room for kids) and the dealer lowballed the X5. He didn't say what he was offered, but now wishes he would have taken it. Told him it might be the wrong time of year to sell AWD SUV in Ohio. Not sure if thats true, but I know you like the updates.

BTW, need any rare soins? Our state just lost $215 million investing in rare coins (some of which don't even exist!!) and all the politicians in Columbus are running for cover.

    Hi,
This looks like a great forum! I am trying to decide whether to trade in my WRX or to sell it privately. I was hoping for some real-world values.

    Location: Long Island/NY
    Year/Make/Model: 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX Sedan w/premium
    Body Style: 4dr
    Engine: 2.0 5MT
    Driveline: AWD
    Mileage: 20,100
    Color: World Rally Blue Pearl
Major Options: Premium Package, Armrest Ext., Dimming Mirror
    Condition:
Exterior is always waxed, paint is in great condition. There is 1 ding on the passenger side door, not too bad, but noticable. The rear bumper is touched up slightly on the side (paint was scratched hitting a garbage pail cover). Small ding on the hood, barely noticable.
Interior is in good condition as well. The seats show some normal wear. The stock stereo is intact, and everything functions properly.
Tires - OEM tires (only used for the winter) will be on the car when traded in. 85% tread
Brakes - Never done, but no problems yet...
Maintenance - Oil changed every 3-4k, and the 15,000 mile service was just done. I have records of everything. Car also has a brand new windshield.
Modifications - The car is lowered mildly about 1.5 with lowering springs. - That is the only mod done to the car.

    Here are some photos:

If I could get 18,000 trade in, I would be happy. I would like to know an idea of what I can expect for trade in vs. selling privately. Thanks so much, look forward to hearing from you!

First time posting here.. but wanted some help. I am currently looking at a 2001 BMW 325i - premium package / silver w/gray leather interior. Good, clean condition with 25,700 miles on it. test drove it and was very clean and drove fine. Carmax appraised it for 17000 as buyback and gave it excellent reviews for the interior/exterior and said no frame/body damage. The title is clear, single owner, never smoked in, and its a 5 spd manual transmission (what i wanted). The private party has it for sale for 20,700. Was wondering if that is a good deal? We haven't started negotiating the price yet, but was wondering how much lower can i go on that.. any experience on carmax appraisals and how much of a markup they usually have on their cars?

    thanks..

I don't know what Terry said it's worth, but where is your neighbor advertising it? He could try The Roundel, Roadfly.org, &/or e-bay. I'm just wondering what the market is for 5 y.o. X5's with little or no warranty left......when people can buy a brand new base model toyota 4Runner (for example) for around $28K.

I'm working on a case here involving a:

    2003 Kia Sedona LX
    V-6
    Automatic 5 speed

    All standard features, no options.

Party A is at $14K Party B is at $18K

What do you think is actual retail private party sellling price for this car?

    thanks

Thanks, Terry. I'll let you know how it goes. Poor Solveig (my car), so beaten up in so few miles...

One question -- why doesn't anyone like dark blue or green cars? I'm looking at used cars for sale in New Zealand and they're all silver or white (bought at auction in Japan and imported) and I've played around with the Edmunds used car value calculator enough to see those are the preferred used car colors. So boring, though :confuse: .

Black/beige exterior -- Beige leather interior
17" wheels, TV/VCP Entertainment package, new tires, new shocks, 5.4 liter engine upgrades
Body and interior are in good condition, no accidents

I am looking to get into a Minivan. What is a realistic number for a trade in on my Expedition, or should I sell it outright? Thank you.

Hi Terry....any input as to my trade-in value? Also, I'm thinking of buying a used SUV in its place but I don't have a good idea how to initiate a reasonable offer. Is it feasible to use the SUV's trade-in value +500-800 for dealer profit? There seems to be a huge spread between most used cars and the asking price.

    Trying again please...
    Seattle, WA
1998 VW Passat GLS 1.8t sedan
    -FWD
    -Auto
    -102k miles
    -Moonroof
    -Black with grey cloth interior
-All scheduled maintenance has been performed and I have receipts
-Paint is glossy with 5-10 small scratches that might be able to be removed by a detailer, one door ding that could be repaired without painting and a number of rock chips on the leading edge of the hood.
-Repaired rock chip on windshield (no cracking)
    -Aftermarket CD stereo
-Steel wheels with stock wheel covers
-Tires have less than 50% tread left
-Brake pads have less than 20% left
    -Interior is very clean
-Carpet is in good shape but the floormats are worn out
-No accidents and no repainting at all other than touching up rock chips
-Car is mechanically perfect as far as I know except that the remotes for the alarm/keyless entry no longer work.
I'd prefer to trade instead of selling private party. Various sources show the trade-in as $4,700 - $5,300 including the deduction for mileage. Is it realistic to expect that I could get that?
    Thanks,
    Andy

You live in Frazier territory, don't you....? .... I think Isell lives around there also ...

Let's take a look see .... it's a 98 V-Dub Passat GLS 1.8t fwd ...... auto (that's good), big miles (not good), slider (that's good), service is up to date (that's good), color is good for the area, needs new round things and stoppers (not good) and we have a few kisses here and there, so the vehicle "sounds" used, not abused ...... well, if the breeze blows cold, everything works and it will clean-up nice .. then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $2's, might "maybe" find a dealer that will get super brave and drop the low low low low (did I say low.?) low low low $3's in it ......

... $4,700 - $5,300 ...?? I guess this comes from the National Enquirer or Mad magazine.?? .. the problem with most info sources are, they aren't even close when it comes to high miles .. those are almost retail figures -- what am I saying.?!? .. those "are" Retail figures ..l.o.l....

........ These things are dropping faster than Pamela Andersons top ...... the miles are high, the 3.0's are gathering dust and there's tons of these at the auctions ..... at $27,9 he has a firm grip, dealers will only drop the $21/$22ish figure in it -if- it's puuuuurfect ... most buyers don't like the higher mile Bimmers unless they have a CPO, been driven on Sundays and have the 4.4 ......

    Thanks for the update .......

    Terry.

PS: Yeah, I've been reading about it .... 220 million..? .. what was he thinkin'..?!? ... his family has his money in trust, let him pay for it.!! -- then put him in Jail for a few years with Bubba.!

    Hi Terry,

I recently picked up a Tundra, but I am not really happy with it (its just to big). I am wondering if I can get out of it without getting killed on it. The details are 2005 Tundra access cab, auto, 4.3 v8, 17" wheels, the bench seat upgrade, limited slip diffrential, tow pkg, all weather pkg, fog lamps, floor mats-- It has 2,500 miles and is desert sand mica located in Phoenix. Origional msrp was 27,079. I took the low lease factor instead of the rebate (mistake now). What do you think a dealer would give to me for it on trade?

    Thanks

You will be much better off getting the brakes and tires done before trying to sell it. Much easier to sell.

I hope I haven't offended in any way....

Terry, please evaluate the following for trade-in.

    Tucson, AZ
    2003 Toyota Highlander NON Limited
    V6 2wd
    26,000 miles
    Gold/ ivory cloth interior
From the orig Monroney: ..Roof rack, moonroof, tow prep, tow hitch, alloy wheels (5), mud guards, privacy glass, keyless entry, tonneau cover, 8 way power drivers seat, homelink, engine immobilizer, carpet/cargo mat set, rear spoiler.
Added: auto-dimming rear view mirror w/compass, fog lights

This vehicle has been well cared for: oil changed every 4-5k, tires rotated (5) waxed every 6 mnths, garaged, no dents scratches, tires are orig, but appear to have about 10,000 miles left (est) still decent amount of tread showing. Brakes? orig 4 wheel disc. Most miles have been highway, so I bet over 50% left on brakes..no bodywork or ins claims.

Also, even tho it has tow stuff, it has never towed anything.

    Thanks,

    Jeff

    ========================================================

Thanks for the feedback. The brakes I can agree with, they're just about done. However, while the tires are on the back half of their life, they still have some decent tread left. Changing them now seems like sort of a waste.

Realistically, how much of the cost of the tires and brakes could I expect to recoup selling private party?

    Andy

**Realistically, how much of the cost of the tires and brakes could I expect to recoup selling private party? ***

The REAL question is how much will you lose by NOT replacing the brakes and the tires ... I would take off $1k personally.

When I see OBVIOUS flaws in a vehicle, I wonder what ELSE is wrong with the vehicle.

NEVER give a buyer a reason NOT to buy your car.

(For the record, I only buy used cars.)
  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
Ditto: never give a buyer a reason not to buy the car.
Do not forget that 1/2 tread on a tire does not mean it is 50% worn.
Minimum legal varies a bit by state, but be assured that if you drive on snow, it is 5/32" in the winter. Summer is something like 3/32" minimum tread for wet roads.

If you want retail kind of money for your car, it MUST be retail ready. As a private party selling a higher mileage car, you also should have a full vehicle mechanical and body inspection report by a reputable ASE servicer if you want to make it easier to sell for the most $$$.

Read with much interest you C4 comments. Also a Christian Dad, IBM sent me to Atl and left me. Any why life time Vette Guy, helped make Malcom Konner rich.
Just bought a 96 C4 LT1 here in GA from American Sportscar.

When you shift into reverse there is a huge clunck. Like on the early C4's when the caliper clips were bent or gone. No one has a fix, do you have a clue or can you point me to a knowing C4 person.

    Terry,

Just thought I would drop you an update on what happen with my vehicle I have listed below...We were the box of rocks that made the mistake of getting the Civic instead of the Accord. Well anyway, after watching the market for a while...i.e....
Autotrader, local news papers, etc...We noticed that allot of Civics that were being sold privately were not moving so well...in fact we actually called on a few to ask how long they have been trying to sell thier cars and a vast majority of them were well into their second month of advertising. Most of the prices didn't really seem to have that high of a price, most were in line for what I thought they should have been worth, so not real sure why these Civics were not moving so well...but anyway we decided that we could not wait for such a long time to try and sell our car and would go out and test the waters with trading it in. Now initially the offers were very...very...low...As we figured....but after a few dealerships...a little b.s. ...we got a deal that was not bad at all...considering the circumstances, here's the deal we got...

2005 Honda Civic EX Special Edition 4 Door Automatic
Tango Red (We live in Tampa, FL by the way)
    Actual Mileage: 400 miles
We paid cash for this car...got it for $16,650 + TTL

What we got for a trade in was $15,500
We bought an Accord EX V6 Sedan (non-navi) and paid $23,850 (basically invoice minus holdback of 3%) +TTL
So since Florida is a tax credit state we saved about $950 in taxes...so I guess you could say our total price on our trade was $16,450. (15,500 + 950).
And to make my self feel bettter in the end, we can also claim the sales tax on both vehicle when we file our 2005 tax return (pls don't spoil our fun).
Bottom line...we did take it in the shorts...but it could have been allot worse that's for sure...
By the way...numerous dealers would not even touch those numbers we got for our trade and the new one.
    My update is complete....
Thanks again Terry....we will as always continue to read these posts and learn something new everyday!!!
    P.S. Got a smoke I can bum?

I have to part with my 2002 because I have 2 SUVS and gas prices are killing me. I have a 2002 s 4wd aut with TOD ,green in great shape with 86500 miles on it.I had a dealer tell me he would give me $7500 in trade on a mazda 6. I have looked up the value in both KBB and NADA .KBB says private value to be around $8500-9500 and NADA says 13,500 !! Any ideas on a fair price if I try to sell it on my own?? The truck is in great shape no problems and I hate to get rid of it !! I am located in Maryland .Thanks!!!

Yeah, at least replace the tires. Otherwise you'll be making excuses, the buyer will make a BIG deal out of it and they will think you skimped on other stuff as well. If the brakes are bad, do them too.

And, yeah, I'm in Issaquah (Seattle) and heading off for a hike in the Cascades.

WOW!! That seems CRAZY to me. How the heck are they going to make ANY money on the deal? They can't mark up your Civic because, as you posted, you can get a new one for $1K more. I don't get it... but congrats to you!

    You are correct!

What I did was call this dealership and talk directly to the sales manager...
Told him that I knew about holdback fees, and the incentives going on right now with the Accords....we haggled a little bit back and forth and we agreed on a price.
Just to show you how good this deal was...I went back to the dealership that I bought the Civic from to see if I could get a good deal and they told me that they couldn't touch that deal! This is from a dealership who we have bought 2 previous cars from! Hell...a neighbor of ours works there and we talked to him offline and he tolds us that there was no way they could do this deal...
All in all we contacted about 6 dealers within a 100 mile radius and they we all offering the same amount on our trade...you know how the game is played...they give you nothing for your trade and move on the price of the new one or they give you what you want on your trade and not move on the new one.
Given all factors involved....that's why we jumped at this offer! Don't think it was going to get any better anytime soon....that's for sure!
    Rock On!

I have to agree. The dealer must be out of his mind - something just doesn't seem right. They sold the new vehicle at invoice MINUS holdback - so they made a big fat zero on the new car. They gave $1,000 less than the cost of a brand new Civic for the trade in, so there's no money left in that deal either. Unless I'm missing something here, that dealer needs their head examined.

Oh...hey, maybe he's selling under his cost, but he's making it up in volume :shades:

Terry said trade-in of 21/22 or so. He probably got offered that on his new van and balked. Has advertised and parked it everywhere. Nice people but not facing reality on this..I'm not giving him any more info unless asked. Terry said lots of these around.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Yeah, I call it "reverse sticker shock" - when you THINK your beautiful, excellent, hardly used, none-in-the-world-like-it trade is worth XXXXX dollars, and you find out that on ~this~ planet that it's actually worth XX dollars...wow, what a shock! The jaw drops, and the immediate reaction is to cry "foul", or "ripoff"....but sooner or later, the light bulb clicks "on" and they find out that maybe, possibly it really isn't worth what they thought it was, lol :shades:

There's no teacher like experience, though. Maybe your friend will get lucky and sell it to some kid with parents that have deep pockets and short brains. Otherwise, he'll have to park the ego and sell it for what it's really worth ;)

    bcb1,

He is still making money on the new car...with the Honda incentives that are going on right now....the least amount he is going to make on the Accord is $450.00.
The most he will make is $750...depending on how many units they actually sell in the month of June...let's say Honda Corp. put a units sold goal of 30 Accords for that dealership for the month of June. If they sell 110% of that goal they will get $750 dollars per unit from Honda...as the percentages goes down so does the incentive money...bottom line is the least amount they will make is $450.
They sold me the accord for just slightly less than invoice minus holdback...so they have made $450 without trying very hard. Now how much they will actually make or loose on this deal depends on what they can sell my trade for...I know they are going to certify it...cost them a little money to do that...after that it is up to the used car gods!!!
So in the end we will never know what the numbers will turn out to be but at this point it makes no difference to me....they did it...and I would assume if they were not going to make any money they wouldn't have done it...you would think?
But there is one thing that is for sure...in this business...knowledge is power!!!!

Still in the hunt for one of these eh, Brad?

Just know the market is pretty soft on these, ESPECIALLY with a five speed so you may be able to buy it for well below what the books say.

Not bad cars, just not many fans.

    First - dump the profanity.

I just ran KBB on it in good condition - it comes up at around $7200.

Terry will be along to tell you soon - check your ego at the door. It's a 125K Toyota RAV, not the Mona Lisa. The dealer is probably offering you what he can wholesale it for. He's not interested in owning it - he's interested in getting rid of it ASAP.

    Good Luck.

First ignore KBB and NADA. No dealer is using those to appraise a car. Real money in my neighborhood is 6-7k. I can't speak for Boston, but I'm sure its not too much different. Remember, no reputable new car dealer will resale this car. It is going straight to the auction and all they are hoping to do is not lose money.

Yup, Nada retail on this is 12,7K and Edmunds TMV for Private Party is 10,2K. Owner is throwing in a detail and new floormats, so for 9,1K it seems like a pretty good deal. He's got all the reciepts, all dealer serviced.

10,000 miles on it. Ten thousand. That's right. It was my father-in-law's car and he had nowhere to go really, then he lost his llicense, then he passed away. It's now a spare car.

Looks like mint. Had some small body work done (no crashes, but some small dents and scratches fixed) by a really good body shop - perfect paint match. If I didn't tell you, you wouldn't be able to tell, but I will tell the buyer, and I will probably sell it to a friend who knows its history.

What might a dealer offer, and what do you think it's worth in a private sale?

Yep, ya forgot the miles .. I just figured you were out having a Bikini wax or something and you just forgot ...........

Anyhoooo ...... we got this 03 Kia Sedona LX with 31,000 short miles, we got the V6 and the auto stuff ... hopefully a good color with no slices, no bad approaches, no bad carry's and no divots ......

**Party A is at $14K Party B is at $18K** .... what kind of party is this.? ... I think someone is a little too close to the Jim beam ... this is a $8,5/$9,000 van (maybe) come trade side ..... $12,9 on the Retail *asking* side if it's cleaner than the Board of Health and twice as sanitary .....

$14/$18 ..?!? .. maybe in the country of Lesotho on a good day ....
