Central FL - Tampa Area
2004 Lexus RX330
SUV
3.5 L V6/Auto
Front Wheel Drive
36,000 miles (yay!)
Black Exterior (boo!), Gray Interior
Options: Came with Premium package, so there is leather all over the place, wood steering wheel and shifter, power everything (including tailgate), moonroof, roof rails, 6 disc CD changer
Tires were recently replaced and only about 5,000 miles old
Brakes are probably ready for replacement
As for maintenance, there have been no issues whatsoever and Lexus service people have been the only hands to touch this car under the hood.
The problems: There are a few bugs etched into the front end, 2 or 3 chips on the hood and a small scratch on the rear bumper from a shopping cart (it could probably be buffed out easily). On the interior, the only negative is that the storage compartment on top of the rear seat armrest is broken.
So what could I expect as a trade in value? Also, is there any bonus value in trading with Lexus? I'm pretty certain they would classify this as a certified vehicle since there haven't been any accidents, repaints, issues. And one last question... how much of a drop off in value would there be if we waited until December to make a move?
Thanks in advance, this discussion thread is extremely helpful and I really appreciate any time and assistance you can offer!!
Terry, whatcha think?
They have come down... the 400hs are getting very popular and a lot of them are hitting the market.
And then there's the Nav thing...
OT: By the way, it burns me to no end that Ford offers a rebate for Military but does not include retired personnel.

I'm not Volvomax, but I'll try to give a semi-helpful answer:
Have you read the owner's reviews on S60's and S80's on edmunds? With Volvos, there seem to be a fair # of people who are driven nuts by lots of problems (often small ones), & others who run up 100K w/o hardly any problems.
Definitely get the service history on any used one you're looking at, + a carfax, & any other research you can think of. Also: is there a good Volvo dealer in your area for service? And/or any good indie Volvo mechanics for when it's out of warranty?
FWIW, my ex is on her 3rd Volvo w/o any unusual problems. Including a '95 850 she bought used & ran up to over 100K.....but yes, get the CPO, esp. if you're new to European cars.....
The 2GR 3.5l engine came a few years later in the RX350 models.
I'm sure it was just a typo, but there's a 40hp difference or so.

The warranty is only about $1200
What you are paying for is the reconditioning necessary to get the warranty.
Your average dealer won't do more than a safety and smog inspection and put the car on the lot.
CPO cars have to pass a 130 point inspection, and anything below 50%,brake pads, tires, etc has to be replaced.
Next, you get a warranty for 2yrs or 50,000 miles that is good at any Volvo dealer in the country.
Finally, there are special APR's for CPO cars that are better than most bank rates.
Believe me, a CPO car is THE way to go.
My boss has a S80 that he bought as an out of town trip car. He has used the Extended Warranty a couple of times and it has already paid for itself. He has had the passenger seat motor burn out, an engine mount start to fail and something else. None of that took the car off road it was all just annoying stuff but the total repairs were around 1,500 dollars.
I have $1100 saved up so that pays for half the difference right there.
BMW, VW, Ford, and GM I believe have similar cars where you can earn discounts on cars. Not sure if you can use those for CPO, but probably.
Thanks,
cusafr
What about CCBA? Any discounts there?

Mathias....the only thing those of us who belong to CCBA gets is a citation for having too many cars in our driveways....

It's hard to get a "great" deal on a low-mileage CPO car from a bmw dealer. Just getting a "decent" deal with the CPO, low miles, etc. is good, & it sounds like you are.
Have you calculated what you're saving over new? Over $10K I hope? And just make sure the car isn't a "buy-back", doesn't have repaired body damage, & that you get the service history.
'Course it'll be 2 years old in Sept.--how much warranty is left? Personally, if I liked the color & options, everything checks out, etc., I'd be REAL interested too. And maybe post more info here on your trade so one of the pros can tell you what it's worth.
1-The S60 may be big enough fir me. If so, is the 2.5T or the 2.4T the better engine? I would think either would have have plenty of power, so other than that, is one better than the other?
2-If I don't find one around here soon, do you have any?
Thanks,
cusafr
On the 530Xi.. it's about a $35k unit wholesale, figure at least $2,000++ to certify it, if all it needed was an oil change (Yeah right, at least add in a brake job) then that's a minimum of $500 plus about $1500 for the warranty.. cleanup, detail, transport, ad nauseum.. they got 38k or so in it and they're making $3kish, that's about right on a car like that.
So Volvomax hit it perfectly. Big diff between new and CPO is that dealers actually make $$ on CPO cars... so they're making fair money, not killing you, but not giving it away either. It's also a low-mile Xi Wagon, they're hot right now and easy to sell. $44,995 is too much tho.. $41k is about right.
ok.. on to this ES300.. Miles? Condition? Paintwork? Color? Location?
Gimme some more info on the ES and I can give you a better idea... it's worth anywhere from $12k to as little as $5k depending on a myriad of factors... Wagon price is fair, ES price? No idea.
The car brand new was 53,875.00 (in 06) and 08 model is going for 55,275.00
The car was a company car. I did get a vehicle history report and there are no red flags.
There's 20 months left on the original warranty and then 2 more years 0r 100,000 miles for the CPO warranty .
I guess I'm a bit scared making such a big purchase! IT's silver with black leatherette ( which seems to be easier to clean)it does not have all the bells and whistels, which is fine with me!
I guess, I really want to make sure I'm getting a good deal because I don't want to deal with my husband thinking he could have done better.
On the ES300 Boston, MA
Black exterior
beije interior
6 CD changer
heated seats
It has 86,000 miles in good condition. No problems with the interior at all-some wear and tear on the leather. The exterior in good condition as well. No major scratches, no rust...
Minor accident on the side rear
Good tires
Initially they offered to give me 8,000, I said no way they have offered to give me 9,000.00 for it. I pretty new at this i'm not sure what other info would be helpful please let me know.
Thank you for you time
The 2.4T was produced between 2001-2003. It had an output of 197hp.
the 2.5T is essentially a bored out 2.4T. it produces 208 hp.
the big difference is in the torque. The 2.4T produced 210 lb-ft. the 2.5T produces 236 lb-ft.
I don't have any 2.4T's but I do ahve some 2.5T's.
Email me if you are interested.
You're new at this so I'll be a bit verbose if it helps!
A Lexus like yours is likely going to be a wholesale car for most any franchised dealer because it's a 7 year old car with 86,000 miles. So it's not a car that they can afford to be very strong on because they might need it to retail, they need to get what they can for it and make it go away.
If I had to "put a number on" your Lexus or, basically, place a dead cash value on it, I'd hit it at $7,500, real money. Under no circumstances would I dare put more than $8k in it so I think the $9k is an overallowance myself.
I figure that your car would bring, on the wholesale market, $8,000-9,000, maybe a few hundred more at the right auction, but I can buy one just like it on a wholesale level that's like new for no more than $10,000-10,500. Based on your description the leather shows wear and the car has been hit before... fixed or not, that hurts it. Granted, it hurts an 01 with 86k on it less than it hurts an 06 with 16k, but it hurts it nonetheless.
So the dealer either sells it to a wholesaler, who buys it for $7,500 or $8k and finds a home for it for $500-1,000 over cost, or they send it to the auction where they have auction fees, transport, cleanup, etc costs. In any event, I doubt they net very much over $8k for it.
So if they are at a realistic price on the Wagon and giving you $9,000 for the Lexus, your numbers are at the very least realistic and you did well.
Also, if you go to http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do and enter the last 7 digits of the BMW's VIN, it will give you the build date. (Which may differ from the in-service or warranty start date) 20 months left on the factory warranty means this 2006 was put into service in April of 2005, which is a bit early for a 2006 model year car, but not unheard of with BMW. My 1988 M5, as an example, was built in November of 1986 and sold in April of 1987.
Thank you so much for all the info. all the details most definitely helped.
I think the numbers are pretty good..but I feel a lot better with your input.
I checked the date it's 8/25/05, does that mean the facoty warranty starts from that date? Thanks again
2006 BMW 330i 4dr Auto
Black/Black
Sport Package
35000 miles
$28000
Get it looked at first...make sure nobody played bumper cars with it or it didn't come from BMW of New Orleans... but that's dead wholesaleish, even with the high miles.
Price is dirt cheap, but who short sells a black/black sport pack 330i, even with fat miles? Make sure it's legit.
Buy it if it checks out.
Northern VA/Metro DC
2006 Ford Escape Hybrid
AWD
30,100 miles
Light Green on top/silver on bottom (two tone paint), gray interior
Safety and Appearance packages (ie: side curtain airbags)
Condition is very good--maybe a small scratch on back bumper, but not visible unless you are looking for it
Regular maintenance performed, everything in good working order, just did 30K checkup.
My main dilemma is whether to sell this fall or in winter/spring 2008. I don't expect to put more than 5,000 more miles on the car before next March/April. I'd welcome anyone's thoughts on that as well. I know the car will be worth less then, but I'll also owe less as well (I think I owe around $10K now and will owe around $9K then)
Thanks for any assistance you can provide!!
As for what it's going to bring in the spring... I have no clue my friend and hate to speculate..
It also goes both ways.. I can remember in 2001 or so, KBB said that Wholesale on, say, a 96 XJ6 was $9-10k.. you couldn't buy one within $2,500-3,000 of that figure wholesale, and really nice ones were easily cracking $14k in the right color.
The MOST any car is going to bring wholesale is at a dealer auction. In reality, no dealer can give you what it's going to do at auction, in all reality, the car goes to a wholesaler who then sends it to auction, or the dealer ships it there themselves. Then you have cleanup, transport, auction fees, etc.
All that being said, $19k at the auction buys me an 06 with miles in the low 20s.. your truck would be in the 18k-18500 range.
Year/Make/Model: 2000 Ford Ranger XLT EXT-Cab 4-Door
Engine: 3.0 Flex-Fuel Automatic transmission
Driveline: 2WD
Mileage: 125,000
Color: Bright red exterior, tan cloth interior
Major Options: alloy wheels, bed liner, hard keyed tonneau cover
Condition: Tires have 85% tread, brakes are new, interior and exterior have normal wear & tear
Other: Power locks, windows, mirrors, factory CD, remote keyless entry, cruise control
I am looking into trading in this vehicle but will consider a private sell depending on the difference. Thank you for your time.
OK.. if it's clean and straight, sounds like a $2500-3k unit or thereabouts.
So throw it in the paper/craigslist/truck trader for $4900/bo and look to take low-mid 4000s for it.
It's back to school time so there's gotta be a big market for inexpensive pickups.
