My impression was that he had $12K to spend on a car and not $30K. The truth is that cars like Accords and Subarus are getting so good and have so many luxury features that it's often better to buy one of them instead of a used Volvo IMHO, especially one with 79K miles on it. I'd rather have the new leather in an Accord or Legacy than the worn leather of a well-used Volvo. And I'd rather have a new-car warranty to go with it.
I've seen many cases, especially over on the Porsche forums, where guys think they can get into a luxury car for little money and are then stung by the high repair prices. If our original poster is a Volvo mechanic, well, that's a different story. In that case, the car may be the right one for him. It's hard to tell without more information.
I've never found the cost of parts to vary much whether it was for my Volvo, BMW, Benz, Honda, Subaru, etc. Sure, I'll get lucky on some things, but that gets balanced out with other things. For one example, I was able to find brake rotors for my Volvo dirt cheap. Shocks were a little more expensive. I found the exact opposite with our Honda.

My "impression" is that S60's & XC70's are more reliable than S80's, but I'm not a volvo expert. Also, have you found a really good indie Volvo repair shop in your area? That's key in owning an out-of warranty older european car. Plus you'll want to get a pre-purchase inspection, right?

you can quess at what the dealer paid for it, but you will never have any idea. Some pay way too much at auction for 4Runners, or he might have got it real cheap on a trade in. You also won't know how much he has spend on reconditioning it.
But if you would have to sell that car in 6 months, and saw that you would only get $20K for it, you wouldn't be very happy, would you? You might have a car worth $20K but a loan that's got $24K left to pay.

that would be called depreciation. Its not unusual to loose 5k going from retail to private party or worse trade in in 6 months. Ask people who drove V8s last summer how much they lost in just 3 months with gas went over $4/gallon.
The S80s get a bad rap because of the problematic T6 models and the 2002 and older ones that really were pretty bad overall.
I wouldn't be scared of a 2004 and up model. The 2006 MY was the last year for that bodystyle and have been pretty reliable.
Remember that a S60 is for the most part just a shrunk S80. They use the same engine, same trans and same AWD system. The XC70 and V70 all share platforms and much of their components with the S80 and S60.
I would take a swing offering him 9,500 bucks see what happens. My gut is that on my lot that would be like a $11,900 car that I would want to let go for 10ish if I had to. Depends how long he has had it on his lot.

Hey guys, help me out with this one: 06 Miata Sport with 6sp AT, 42k miles white with black, one owner non-CPO, very good shape, cloth interior and cloth top. Appears to need nothing. In SF bay area. Similar cars at other dealers here are asking $15-17k. Any help with what a dealer should be in one for? I'd like to think an offer of 12-13k might get it done if its been sitting for awhile...how far off am I?

Transaction prices around 21k for a CPO little more little less depending how long we have had the car on the lot.
Galves is showing 16,000 as the top end for that car trade in but there I don't think you could actually buy a S60 like that for 16,000 right now unless someone who is kind of clueless is trading one in. VOlvo is setting the off lease prices on the high end and they get bid up at auctions.
See if you can find a new 09 or 2010 comparably equipped. Then figure msrp and subtract rebates and discounts. Since you only have 7k miles that skews value upward a bit. Used altimas with insane low miles will attract dealers attention. I would see if you can get 1-2k cash in your pocket by turning in your car to a dealer who wants it. Do that a month before the lease expires. You have at least that in equity with those miles -- maybe more.
I have a 2007 Altima 2.5S. I asked here about a month ago and the number was ~13k w/ 17K miles. Your car is a SL but you have an accident, so, I think it might be worth around 14-14.5K, might be less if the repair is not good or bad carfax.
However, 15.8K is a good buy w/ 7K miles. I don't think you can get that cheap if you want to buy it later.
Now, here's the thing, in NJ, dealers wouldn't be budging over $15k on that car at trade time. SO... and this happens rarely, but it does happen... Galves doesn't agree with the auctions. My problem, being an NJ resident, is paying based on auction when, if I try to trade that vehicle, I'm getting pounded by the dealer. So I can't see paying more than $19k CPO in NJ.

We own most of the 2007 S60s with that mileage in stock for more then $19,000 after the CPO. Now if it is something we have had on the lot for a long time maybe we blow it out for 500 under or something but that is about it.
It still comes down to the fact that most of the S60s were leased and so Volvo can do a pretty good job of controlling the prices on them. Its worse on the R Model Volvos right now. Galves is a good 4,000-5,000 below what we can realistically by them for.

given that a dealer guy I know that has contacts that can CPO a volvo he gets at auction (OK< it is just buying the warranty in this case) gets $1,500 for that (at least on an R), what the heck would a realistic non-COP price be to offer?

Actually, they have a 2006 with low 40K miles for 16,995. SHould offer that price, just for the 2007!
Offer 17,000 all they can say is no or if you are lucky they bump you to $1,000 to $1,500 and you haggle out the less few hundred to hit under $18,000.
It really depends what they did to the car at 30,000. Being it is at a Saturn dealer they probably won't bother doing the brakes and tires as long as they are above the state minimum whatever that is in NJ. At anything near 19,000 I would expect chubby tires and pads/rotors in good condition. I wouldn't expect that at $17,000.
Or you could drive up here and I could sell you a 2006 with 35,000 for $18,500 certified. :P
In the coldest months, I saw 2006 models dip to about $14k or so, starting price. And since then add one more year of depreciation.
In 2006 the Sport was actually slotted above the Touring model, so that's fairly well equipped. For 2008+ the reverse is true. For 2006 that means the Sport is probably worth a grand or so more than a Touring.
Prices kept going down until around March-April or so, though that may have been related to the big incentives on new 2008s at the time.
AT is actually less appealing on a Miata, so that may help you. The AT certainly doesn't add value as it does for most cars.
42k miles is high for a Miata. These are usually 2nd cars.
CPO, though, so add value for the warranty and reconditioning. I think matching the $14k I saw last year is ambitious enough. $12-13k may not be realistic. The new ones do not have the $2500-5000 rebates that we saw in March/April 2009.
Inspect the top closely. Make sure there are no kinks or severe wrinkles. A new one will set you back a grand installed and kill any hopes of a good deal.
Looking for opinions on what I should ask for trade-in value for my Escape: 2003, Limited, 4WD, 68,000, Gray, Alloy Wheels, Tow Package, V6, Sun Roof, standard cd radio, heated seats, driver-side seat power. New tires, less than 3k on them. Body and paint are in good-to-great shape.

The car would be for my wife. She wants something that is smaller and easier to park, reliable and with decent gas mileage. It must be an automatic. While a Yaris would fit the bill (and might be what she originally thought of), I see this as an opportunity for a Miata. I'd prefer a manual of course, but the 6sp AT gets good reviews (example: Car and Driver review) and I have to believe that an auto Miata with paddle shift has to be a more fun 2nd car than any auto hatch that I can think of. Not much loss of performance vs. the stick. And our other car is a Pilot, so we already have practical people/cargo all-weather carrier covered.
Agree on miles, but they can be driven year around here in California :shades: I'm hoping that I can make something work, but am willing to wait for the right deal. Maybe they are bringing $12k in trade and can't move much more? Dunno...
Another data point: I picked up an 06 Miata Grand Touring, AT last year at $13,500. But, it was the bottom of the financial crisis.
I had two MT Miatas before, and I miss it somewhat, but I do like this AT pretty much, particularly around town. It's nice also for touring - you can easily set up the transmission for an upcoming curve. It's not so good on the track - rev lock outs kick in more than you expect, and you don't have as much control. The Miata is pretty easy to park, but I frequently put the top down to get a better view of the rear end. I live in the city and am always parallel parking. I have the soft top - Juice has the PRHT with its better visibility rear window (I had a hardtop on an earlier one).
I also have a Pilot as my other car - helpful in Minnesota and in toting hockey players / gear (though I can get one hockey bag in the Miata trunk).
They're great cars for California (where I had my first). Do it, but think about the PRHT.

PRHT prices jump up a LOT, because they only started making them in 2007, so it would have to be at least a year newer, plus they're less common and very much in demand.
Last year the cheapest one I could find was $19 grand (compared to $14 grand for an 06 soft top), and it sold before I could even test drive it.
Next lowest price on a PRHT was $20.4k. Ridiculous. May as well buy new.
I bought a new one for $22k.
If you can find a used PRHT for less than $19 grand or so it's a buy. And hurry.
Actually, there is a local private party 07 PRHT w/34k miles for 17999. Manual, so its out for my wife, but it sounds like a pretty good deal for the right person.
I took some of the advice. I offered 9500 2-3 weeks ago and never heard back. The car is still on their website.
I bought a 2007 Infiniti M35x with most packages except the advanced/premium tech option. High miles (63K) brought it down to 21000. Clean carfax, one owner and 5 pages of the dealer maintenance. One tiny nick in the windshield and some damage on the door seal that looks like someone tried to use a slimjim to break in. 2 hour drive to take it home. Everytime I get into the car I slide my hand across the wood inlaid dash and say "Hello lover....".
A technological tour de force but not iPod aux port. Shocking. Nav kicks the [non-permissible content removed] out of our 2006 Saab. However, the Saab handles better (slightly) than the M35X, is slightly faster in my opinion (Aero with 6 cylinder turbo), gets slightly better milage and has better heated seats. I just add this info for all the haters out there to choke on. As for the Infiniti, I have named her Kishi.
Yeah that is just stupid never to replay back. If someone gives me an offer I always reply back even if I just thank them for their offer and tell them it is no where near I need to be on that car. If they are close, say within 500 to a 1000 bucks depending on the price of the car, I will counter and see what happens.
You can't beat Saab Aero seats there is just no way around it. Cars that are three times the price will lose out.

One engine problem threw a rod, and he spent $17,000 to fix the engine.
He keeps some of the broken parts in his office as a souvenir.
I guess the moral of the story is, if you want a $25k exotic, you'd better have $42 grand (or more).

Not such a good idea for long commuting (as in 25K+/year)
I actually prefer the taupe/tan interior. All black (like my Accord) is just too dreary.
Not a fan of black outsides though, but in used cars, sometimes beggars can't be choosers!

Miles are kinda of high (just 2k left on the B2B warranty) and again, it's a year older than when I was looking, but the price is still good.
There's just no supply, so it'll sell - fast.
I bought a 2007 Infiniti M35x with most packages except the advanced/premium tech option. High miles (63K) brought it down to 21000. Clean carfax, one owner and 5 pages of the dealer maintenance. One tiny nick in the windshield and some damage on the door seal that looks like someone tried to use a slimjim to break in. 2 hour drive to take it home. Everytime I get into the car I slide my hand across the wood inlaid dash and say "Hello lover....".
A technological tour de force but not iPod aux port. Shocking. Nav kicks the [non-permissible content removed] out of our 2006 Saab. However, the Saab handles better (slightly) than the M35X, is slightly faster in my opinion (Aero with 6 cylinder turbo), gets slightly better milage and has better heated seats. I just add this info for all the haters out there to choke on. As for the Infiniti, I have named her Kishi.
That's actually a good price, even with those miles.

You can't beat Saab Aero seats there is just no way around it. Cars that are three times the price will lose out.
