    Impressively low miles!

You'd be looking at $10,500 on the low end, but, depending on the dealer, someone might wander up as high as $11,500, if it is as nice as it sounds.

That's a bargain for a big lux car with such low miles. You should keep it, or buy it if it's a friend selling.

Sorry to say, but here in NJ, that's more like $21k trade value. NC may or may not be different, but probably not by much, if any at all.

    Being a Pontiac - I would say $10k-$13k.

Would you guys hold out for $11k firm in negotiations?

Well, alot of things come into play. Condition is a big part of trade-in value. When I trade a car, I try to make sure it is "frontline ready," meaning the dealer need do nothing but put a sign in it. So I'll push for top trade value.

Another major factor is the car you are buying and how much wiggle room there is in that one. I might accept $500 less on my trade if I'm getting a screaming deal on the car I'm buying. As Terry used to say around here, "All that matters is the difference." I don't care how the dealer spreads their numbers around, as long as the "net" to me is the same.

Of course, LRguy makes a good point. No matter what the book says, a dealer probably isn't going to step up on an orphaned car. Pontiac is dead and, like it or not, it has killed the values.

At $11k, I'd probably be inclined to private sale it. That goes against my personal rule of not doing so on anything $10k and up, but if you are looking at getting $1K-$2K less than what they are even going for at dealer auction, there is alot of room to play with there. I mean, if dealers are paying $12k at auction in my neck of the woods, that means they are listing them for $16k. So, even at $14k, yours would look like a good asking price. You let a buyer twist your arm and steal it from you for $13k and you are still making quite a bit more than trade value.

I agree, I never understood when people roll out the advice that you should treat your trade as a separate deal. They are linked no matter how you look at it.
My problem really is I owe 8k on it. I don't have the money to pay it off and then sell it privately. So I'm kinda stuck with trading it in. It' s good to know they are paying 12k at the auctions. I'd be happy with 11k for it.
I'll make sure it is super clean when I take it in.
    Thanks

Two reasons why I always give a wider spread. First of all, it is a blind appraisal. I can see a poster quoting this a gospel when the car will not hold the number. Secondly, markets vary from region to region and even city to city, Not knowing the local market I need to build in the spread.

    I'm thinking Tacoma or 4Runner...

I've been dealing with back issues and the Civic isn't the easiest to get in and out of. Although I'm not sure about the ride in the others. I had a disc fixed back in March, but other issues have my Dr thinking he needs to fuse them now, I'm not so sure!
  • fushigifushigi Member Posts: 1,459
I'd agree that moving to the higher height of a truck or SUV would make entry easier if you have back problems. But are you sure you want a full-on truck? Seems to me an SUV with car underpinnings (Highlander or RAV4 if you're sticking with Toyota, for instance) would offer a better-for-your-back ride.

$14-16k trade. A dealer will deduct for the cost on new tires.
  • sebring95sebring95 Member Posts: 3,241
You wouldn't have to pay it off to sell private. I have bought several used cars from folks with loans. I just go to their bank to close the deal and their bank hands over the title.

Another option is to work with the dealership you're buying your new car from. Most will gladly accomodate your private party sale (and you can save tax dollars too). In fact I did this back in December when I bought my ever so slightly used Pathfinder. I worked out a deal with the seller and she "traded" it on a new vehicle. The dealership then sold it to me at the pre-negotiated price. She saved tax dollars on the new car plus got the private value we negotiated and dealership sold two cars. She paid the dealership an extra $200 for paperwork and consumating the deal.

I'm in downstate IL. Values could be different in the city. I'm thinking that $11,000 or so would be a fair trade. Down here they are selling around $13900 or so. The turbo will help it....but the tires would play a major part in reconditioning expenses.

When you went to the seller's bank their loan was satisfied before you got the title. We have done "pass through" deals many times. The dealer actually buys the car as a trade then resells it to you at the price you had agreed to with the original seller.

Sure it was satisfied before I got the title. Minutes before. In all such cases.....I went to the bank with seller and cash/cashiers check. Gave the bank the balance on the loan, gave the seller their portion (if anything..in one case the seller had to pay some as well) bank released lien, seller signed titlee, bank notarized sellers signaure on title, I leave with title in hand. Doesn't work when you're dealing with the GMAC or Toyota FInances of the world...but works at "real" banks. In a couple cases dealing with a big name bank (US Bank I recall for sure) someone at the local bank ordered the title ahead of time from whatever remote bunker they store their titles.

I'm suprised a dealer would still do one. Doesn't it technically put your dealership on the hook for used car warranties and make the dealership a party to potential tax evasion issues?
  • lrguy44lrguy44 Member Posts: 2,197
The dealer actual buys the car. It is a trade. The car is then sold "As Is No Warranty". We do not do it that often here, but we have owned every car involved.
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
I guess it depends on where you are. AFAIK, here in MA there is no such thing as a "no warranty - sold as is" car from a dealer.
  • jayriderjayrider Member Posts: 3,602
If the van has been good to you you should consider keeping it til it is paid off. AWD vehicles are more in demand in november than
june. You have already absorbed the majority of the depreciation --- use your head not your heart. I've followed my heart way to often. ;)

In Illinois the dealer does not have to provide a warranty. Older vehicles or vehicles with miles on it are sold As is-----No Warranty.

On the region - absolutely. That's why I'm only answering folks in my region (NE), since that's really all my number should apply to.

On condition - well, that's why we are a free service. ;)
If the poster can't be honest about the condition, they aren't going to get an honest appraisal. Its their loss. I'm not offering to buy ANY of the cars posted here. :P

depends on condition, since you left out those details. If maintenance is up to date, tires are good, no runs, hits, or errors, etc, etc, you are probably looking at $19k-$19.5k.
