    Thanks stickguy,

That's exactly what my line of thinking is. Now they know I am looking to trade in, the difference is what I need to focus on. If there is a $5k 'out the door' cost, if they are lowballing me on the trade in, it has to be reflected in the price of the car we are buying? I think the deal seems pretty good, which I guess is why I am so suspicious! Reading forums such as this makes me think the dealer combining the two numbers makes it easier for them to get more money out of me somehow?

$8500 was a good offer on your Mini. Its auction value is about $9k.

Now what's the story on the SUV? An '07 Santa Fe Limited... I'll assume AWD? Let's say 60k miles? In which case its worth about mid $13s at the block.

So, adding in this and that and the kitchen sink and I would expect $6500 difference plus tax and tags.

BUT, you said TMV is $13,5? So just how many miles does this thing have??

My bad - I was looking at the wrong column on one of my many spreadsheets. TMV is listed at $14,463 - it's an 07 Limited FWD with 44k miles. Looks in great condition (will take it to our mechanic before anything is signed though) - and so I was working on the assumption that if I can get it for $14k, with an $8500 trade in, my taxes on the difference and other dealer fees etc. would be approx. $1k. That makes my out the door price $6,500?

Of course the dealer threw out, "If we can get somewhere close to $5,000 out the door, would you sign today - and I don't even know if $5,000 is even possible....." so I don't know how realistic that was, or if I will then get a hard sell of warranties etc (even though it's still under factory warranty until October)

So I was offered $16,700 for my 2010 TSX. I called another dealer today. He asked me what the other dealer offered me. I told him about the abundance of TSXs, but not too many with the Tech Pkg. I was offered a little less than I wanted, $19,200. He said he has to look at it, but his UCM pegged it between $18,500 & $19,200.

Making progress here. Thanks again everyone for your help!

needs brake pads. so obviously time to get rid of it, right? Starting to think if the right deal came along (and my wife fell in love with something) it could happen sooner.

so, as it sits, what is trade and private on this?

2005 Honda Odyssey. EX-L (so leather, roof, heated seats). Light bluish color (like a steel blue).

71,000 miles. Well maintained, clean mechanically, needs nothing (other than aforementioned brake pads with I can have thrown on). 1 owner, drives fine. Tires about mid life span, but decent tread left.

No body work ever done, but has it share of nicks and such (normal minivan battle scars, but should detail up OK).

Includes a Honda trailer hitch (no tow package or electric, just used for a bike rack).

Also has an ipod adapter that has jacks for a portable XM unit that I will throw in.

So, what would be reasonable to expect on a trade, and if I wanted to dabble back on Craigs again, what should I list at and hold out for?

ok... so a front driver with 44k. I'm seeing about $13k at auction here. That makes the TMV pretty low in this case (a rarity). Even $14,500 would be a decent deal. Anything less than that and you are getting a great deal.

So I think their $6500 OTD offer was a damned good one, personally. That would put you somewhere around $14k for the Hyundai and $8500 for your MINI. They must really need to move a unit or really want your MINI.

somewhere around $10-$10.5 on a trade today.

Dealers are probably listing them for $15-$16k and taking the first $14k that comes along. So list it for $13,995 and, at the worst, grab $12k. You probably wouldn't even need to go that low, though.

In the fall someone said that these were bringing about 20,000 at auction. Also, someone mentioned that the prices were depressed because they were too many of them on the market.

Anyway, this one is at a Honda Dealer. Been on the lot a long time. Was wondering if 20,000 would work?

Thanks. I relayed to my wife. Her response was "really, that much?" I think I know where that might be heading.

If we happen to stop and drive something that really pushes her buttons and the price is right, I suspect she may say to heck with it and do it now instead of waiting until year end.

But, if nothing else, if she gets what she wants, that means at the end of the year when it is time to upsize the fleet, it will be entirely up to me to get what I want for myself.

Just one man's opinion: around here (Virginia), probably not. You never know though, you walk in on the right day, get the right sales guy, with the UCM in the right mood...no harm in making a take it or leave it offer.

    j/k.

I did, however, just install an ECU tuner on the 135 yesterday. OMG! Insane. Tire spin in first 3 gears. And even with that lack of traction and running my current all-season rubber, I managed to tick off a 4.72-sec 0-60. :surprise:

Very funny! I'd have loved to pick up a demo or service loaner 335xi for the same price I'm paying for my 328xi, but considering the 81 mph in a 55 mph ($299) speeding ticket I got on the way to work on Saturday (in my 201 hp 4 cyl TSX), I don't NEED 300 hp & 300 lb ft of torque;)

I get your point, lol. I haven't had a DD w/o a warranty for some time. My S10 obviously has no warranty but that will be gone once the Elantra is replaced with an SUV. The Fiance just told me she saw the new Explorer and likes it.... great two obscene car payments in my future. Her answer was "its cheaper than the Enclave" (not by much)

What a boat, and the reviews I have read seem to back that up. And get any nice options on it, and the MSRP will soar.

I did drive an Edge recently (with the ecoboost). Now that was nice driving. Not too big, bur far from small.

I think once she drives some of them, the overall size she wants will change. She loved her Dad's Envoy and I haven't checked the specs but I think but the Explorer and the Enclave are bigger (they at least seem bigger).

I told her about the Edge, and would want to try the Santa Fe and GMC Terrian That size of SUV is such a big category. It's a ways in the future (early next year) but its never to early to start shopping!

the Santa Fe was surprisingly nice, and to me, a perfect size (not too big, but more cargo room than the tiny ones). Drove nice too, and felt substantial yet maneuverable. My wife liked it way more than the Highlander she drove. If we had been buying wight now, pretty sure she would have gone with that (though we did not drive the CR-V yet).

one thing though is a new Santa Fe is due out for 2013. I believe in the fall.

    I've got a friend looking for a 2010 or 2011..

    AWD
    Leather
    Moonroof
    V-6..

Everything is standard, pretty much... I think the only add is the V-6 (maybe AWD?).

    So.. trade-in on a 2011 with 15K miles and a 2010 with 30K miles..

    Thanks!

If you are serious about buying an Explorer or most other models, go to the Ford website and request a brochure.
They usually send a coupon, although it has to be used within 30 to 60 days or something like that.

It depends. With any modification, something would have to go wrong that was actually caused by the modification for it to matter. So, for instance, you put on an aftermarket exhaust and your A/C konks out. The dealer can't charge you for the A/C repair since it is completely unrelated to the exhaust.

This tuner is pretty cool in that all you have to do is bring up the menu on the dash and turn it off. It is then undetectable unless you open the ECU box or hit the correct buttons on the steering wheel to bring up the menu again.

Anyway, less than 6k left on the warranty, so I'm not worried.

2010 is roundabout $23k at the block... so maybe $22k trade.

2011 is about $27,500... so figure $26k on trade.

Obviously, 2010 is the way to go. $4k increase for 1 year is not worth it, IMHO.

BTW, an '09 with 40k is about $20k at the block.

I know I'm in a different region, but I'll just add my experience from my recent used Odyssey purchase, which simply supports the numbers Q stated.

I looked at a few '05 Touring models with more miles than yours that were going for right around $15k (one was at a no-haggle dealership). So maybe subtract a little for the EX-L vs. Touring, and I agree that you should be able to get $13k with little problem.

Just like your recent Accord sale, I'm sure you would have quick success with another low mileage, well maintained Honda.

The iS is ... I forget... is it 330hp? edit: just looked it up... 320hp/370lb-ft. I kinda figured mine is putting out 330/360, so it seems I was pretty close.

I'm curious to see what it will do when I put the stock tires back on. The summer runflats (245mm width) should give a better launch than the Conti all-seasons (235 mm width). I would imagine with good tires it will probably be in the 4.5 sec range. And that's JUST the tune and ONLY on the lowest setting.

Oh, BTW, I didn't brake torque it. Since I had so little traction from a standstill, I didn't see the point.

We'd like to get a fix on the "market value" for a slightly used 2012 white Jetta diesel sedan TDI w/ premium. We paid $24,271 for it Jan 2012 (plus taxes, fees, etc.). Now we have 800 miles on it, it's in near new condition. We need to document its estimated resale value for the IRS. We couldn't find a published guide on a car this new. The dealer who sold it to us was not cooperative, just saying "check online with NADA or one of the Used car guides like we have to do." We need something authoritative in writing to convince the IRS. Any ideas?

While people in this forum may be able to help, I don't think you'll be able to use the responses in here as evidence for the IRS.

At the top of every Edmunds.com page, there is a "Help" link. http://www.edmunds.com/help/

On that page, hit "Ask a Question." It will be routed to someone at Edmunds who can help you - I believe we have one guy who does a lot of this. Your dealer was kind of a jerk, by the way. He could have at least told you what HE would have offered for trade-in.

There really is no established market yet. If you just bought it in January, why can't that be the value?

Hell, if anything, it is worth MORE than you paid from a retail perspective. Only 1 went through auction, it had almost 4k miles, and it fetched $23k. The dealer who bought that one will have to list it for at least $26k and sell for $25k. You have lower miles, sooo...

Not sure what "authoritative" means. What about paying for a temporary galves.com subscription and printing out the value from there? Will that qualify as authoritative? And, hell, to be honest, that might spit back at you "No established market."

The saga continues, though we might have a winner. Took a test drive on the way back from Sea World last night:

    2007 Mercedes R 320 CDI
    7 speed auto, 3.0L 6 cyl DIESEL
    AWD
    68,4xx miles
Iridium Silver over Ash (light grey) leather (not tex)
    panorama roof
    nav/CD/Sirius, Harmon Kardon sounds system
    power tailgate
    front and rear parking sensors
    Air suspension
Carfax has it as a lease out of Ft Lauderdale

Its at a euro specialist dealer in Daytona Beach (on ISB), who has the firm price at $25,950. The price is probably strong, but diesel R-classes aren't exactly a dime a dozen. This is the only one within 200 miles of me, and there's 8 others in the next 100 miles, all in Tampa and Atlanta.

    http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?ct=u&car_id=316844254

The trade, which he was very clear he did not want, is my 2005 Yukon XL Denali, with 120,000 big miles. We've hit that as a $10-11,000 trade. Given that I'm in rural South Georgia, trucks will always sell, so I'm thinking of putting it on CL or Autotrader and see what bites. Am I out of line to start with an asking price of $14,000?

What say the masters? Thanks for the help, as always.

No, you aren't out of line on yours if it glows in the dark.

That dealer purchased the R320 at auction. Here is the listing:
    02/23/12 PALM BCH Lease $22,000 68,335 Avg IRI SIL 6D A

So I think his "firm" price is a bit strong. If we figure his fees, transport, and maybe let's say he had to put new tires on it in addition to that new battery... so he's in it for $23k max. $24,500 purchase price is the end of the world, IMHO. I guess if you really felt like you couldn't live without it and there are no other choices, $25k wouldn't kill you.

Thanks for the info. They weren't terribly interesting in talking about their number, but if I can come back to them with the facts you gave me, and knowing that I know what they're in it for, maybe we can meet somewhere in the middle. $25K is not too much to pay for it, in my mind, because it is a very well cared for car, and there aren't any more out there. Plus, these guys have been decent and professional thus far. No 4 squares or anything. Yet.

I know a guy who has been a die hard stick driver his entire life. After owning an Acura RSX & VW GTI, he bought a Boxster, then a 911 C2. His 911 was rear ended by some dope who ran a red light & fixed. He said it wasn't the same after the accident, so he started looking at cars. His 1st stop was a BMW dealer to drive an M3 Convertible. The dealer said they don't have any sticks to drive & he almost walked out. The salesman who was an enthusiast, convinced him just to drive it.

He loved it & bought the M3 Droptop DCT. He's very happy with it.

I have now driven over 6,000 miles in the BMW 335iS w/DCT.
The 7 speed DCT transmission is excellent – by far the best such device I have experienced.

Well, mine isn't the DCT, but the 6-speed ZF box. With the paddles or in DS mode, it is pretty astonishing as far as slushboxes go. I couldn't do it as fast myself, that's for sure.

I sometimes get lucky looking through the auction data I have access to.

They paid $31k for it at an auction here in NJ just 5 days ago.
