Hey Guys. I stumbled across this one about 100 miles away in Cincy. It caught my eye because the price is lower than the asking price of a lot of '99s I've seen. I'm guessing it's because of the miles. I have to decide if I can deal with ivory instead of black interior, but here goes. It's still a bit over my budget, but let me know what you think.

A 2000, Lexus LS400, black exterior, ivory interior, 35,525 miles, CD changer, heated seats, moonroof, HIDs, bronze glass. The asking price is $39,500. What do you think?

This is the same dealership that was asking $36k for a '98 with all of the toys and similar mileage. The body was a bit more beat up than I wanted, but they came down to $33,500 pretty quickly.

    Thanks,
    Quentin

Curious, as the MB diesels seem to have a cult-like following, are these two essentially worth the same $?

    2000 MB E320 30K- Leather, sunroof, cd, navigation, white/black

1999 MB E300 TD - Leather inserts, sunroof, cd, Silver/silver and MB Certified

just as an FYI, a dealer in Wilmington (Delaware, I live near Philadelphia) had an ad in the Sunday paper. One car was a 2001 LS, mileage below 10K, listed at 42.5k (off of a 50K sticker). Not much more than the '99s you keep turning up.

Thanks for the info, but that's a bit farther than I would want to drive to look at a car, and it's way above my budget. (I know you weren't suggesting I go there, and it was just a FYI) If you haven't figured it out from my posts here, I'm very picky. :-) Also, it has to be black. That's a good price though....I wish I'd had a copy of that ad for the dealer I was talking to about the '99 with 18k miles. They wouldn't go below $41,300 I really want to be under $35k, and I think I could get a nice '98 for $33k or so based on what Bill and Terry have said. But if I can get a newer car (perfect of course) for $38k or less, I can just go with a 5 year loan instead of 4, and still keep my payments where I want them. I'm in Ohio BTW.

..... Ivory ...? did you say Ivory ...? Your killing me..! Do you know how many Ivory LS's pass me by in a month ...? --- gheeeeez.

Hundreds of dollars away on the last one ...hmmmmm.,

Oh well, lets see about this one (snore) ...

Ok, it's got 35Klicks..black with ... oh, boy, Ivory gut's

He probably has "around" $31/$32 in it (that's because it's Ivory) .. I feel, $34$ will buy it ---- So go buy the darn thing ...

    Ivory ..huh.

    Terry... :)

..... Better pull a Carfax on that one ...

    Terry.
  • qwallsqwalls Member Posts: 406
Soooo, Ivory is bad? I went to look at one locally, and it looked more like tan, not the really light interior like I've seen in some GSs.

I'll probably go take a look at it Saturday (since it's almost a 2 hr drive) if they still have it, and see what's what....

You know, Lexus only has three colors of interiors in the LS, black, tan/ivory, gray. Is Ivory the worst from a resale point of view?

    Thanks,
    Q
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
....... No, I love the color -- black and tan, like your dad's caddy... I was kidding. I just had to bust your *****

That would be my preference .. and they do sell better.

    Terry.

....... The miles are right and it's a LX ...

You know the routine, IF ... it's nice, right now it's worth "around" the high $10's ..

    O.K. folks, whatcha gonna do?
1996 Honda Accord EX-V6 4dr Heather Mist exterior/Ivory interior. 85k hiway miles/all service records. Car in great condition. Never hit. Good rubber (25k left at least). Lojack.
Gets polished 2x year. Washed at least 3 times a month. Looks great. NY/CT area. What's it worth when I trade it on a new vehicle. Edmunds TMV says one thing Kelly says another. Who's right?

Hey guys, I'm trying to figure out what my insurance company is smoking...

I'm in Des Moines, IA with a 95 Gran Prix SE Coupe, Black with charcoal interior, 67K, bose audio, 10 disc changer, spoiler, ground effects, power seat, new tires and mufflers. It a has few minor dings, interior is clean (no french fry invasions!)

Anyway the car got caught in a nice hail storm this summer. Cost to repair is 4100 and the insurance company says "Fix it". Is the vehicle worth this much?? I might be able to get slightly more than that if I try to sell it outright after it gets out of the body shop. I can't see getting more than 3500 for it on trade. What do you think?

    Thanks Guys!

I do not get it sometimes.

Terry I wish ya were at Ocoee this AM.. Apparently the market is back in a big way that or the crack pipes were fired up prior to bidder badges being slapped onto arms.

1988 BMW 750iL. McNeill Hit the mother of all home runs with this one. 38K miles. Black/Grey. Super nice, had some paintwork, sitting on cheap tires.

Get this. $12,800. AIIEEE!! Can you say Buried worse than Pompeii after that Volcano blew? But, Hey! Ya got $200 cash back and float!

1998 BMW 528ia White/Sand. 40K. Nice car, very nice. $23,900 across the block by blockheads.

1997 528i 5-sp. Black/Sand Doghouse reshot. Done well. I wanna hear ya say YEOWCH man..

    221,000 miles

$9,700 Though I suspect some exporter is gonna make a homer on that one.

Pathfinders were way past clean book..etc..

It was "Dummy Days At Ocoee" today.

    Uhh...

    Uhh...

$4,100 in damages and they didnt total the thing?

Its a $3K car I think on a wholesale level.. so, what, $5K retail?

    Bill
  • bmhorsfallbmhorsfall Member Posts: 4
My thoughts exactly. When The estimate came in at 4100, I thought it would get totaled. Seems to me the insurance company could save a few bucks by totaling the car and selling it for salvage.

Thanks! You confirmed my thoughts on the matter!
Maybe the adjuster will be open to some negotiation.

Thanks. This only reinforces my perception that Edmunds TMV on used cars is outta whack. When I plugged this info in, it gave me 10,125 on dealer trade in (I wish !). KBB was more in your ballpark.

  • soberssobers Member Posts: 496
I think Edmunds does not adjust miles if the car has 12-15K per year. Say, a 98 Accord with 59K miles & other with 49K miles comes out to be the same on Edmunds but if both the cars are seating on the lot one is bound to be sold for $500 (or so) more than other!
  • soberssobers Member Posts: 496
Edmunds is MUCH BETTER OR CLOSE to real world than KBB in my opinion. Kbb was showing 17,000 trade-in for my 2000 Accord SE wioth 15K miles! Edmunds is more realistic in most situations. When you go into costlier cars lie LS300/Bimmers, market trend, color, right buyer, region would affect prices dramatically (atleast thats what I think from Terry & Bill's posts)

BTW CR-V we are trying to buy it for $12,000 with certification. These vehicles are so popular, dealer can't keep them for 2 days!! So they are trying to get the last $$$ out of it!!
  • ckrllckrll Member Posts: 19
    In evaluating market value:

How many miles per year is considered not excessive? 12k? 15K?

And how do you adjust for, say, the same year car bought in October vs. bought in July in a year end closeout? There can naturally be 1,000s of miles difference, even thought the same number of miles per year are put on the car.

  • ckrllckrll Member Posts: 19
I've noticed that the TMV has fallen nearly $1,000 in the past 6 weeks or so. I'm looking to sell my Accord with 29,000 miles, almost new tires, CD, outstanding condition, and am unhappy with the drop in TMV.

What's going on in the market, and what do the experts see as a fair wholesale price today?

    Burgundy/tan w/ tan leather, CD changer, rear A/C, 4.6 V-8, Auto, 4x4, 3rd seat.

Vehicle is at a Mazda dealer in Maryland, near Washington DC.

    What's a decent retail price for such a vehicle? They're asking 21,999.

Thanks in advance for your help!!!

2001 Ford F-150 2WD in PA, Black/Black 17,000 miles extra cab 4 door short bed. NOw the wierdness Roush Stage One pkg. Basically $10,000 dollers worth of crap. Is this basically the conversion van of pick up trucks. Original sticker was something like $38,995. We were thinking its worth mabye $20,000 on a stretch. Who wants 2WD in January

    1997 Volvo 850 T-5 Wagon
    77,000+ miles
    color: silver
FULLY LOADED with leather interior and wood trim on the dash board.
One owner, no crashes, well taken care of.

They're asking $16995 and we know that's too much... but what would be more realistic (obviously this is a private party sale). We're in Austin, Texas.
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
Really it depends on the car. Obviously the lower the miles the better.

I like to see 12K a year myself, but it just depends on the car..

  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
And, yes, Hondas, at least down here, have come down.

    As to your car..

If its super nice, its gotta be worth $15K wholesale.

How many miles are on it?

Sheesh.. I dunno. I mean, I assume that this kit car is based on a 4.6 XLT...

I'd think that the truck is worth.. I'm thinking $16K or so? So whats that crap add? $2K?

I think $18K. But please dont take that as a buy bid :)

    Bill
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
    ....... Don't I wish ...l.o.l....

The miles aren't too bad, silver is the right color --- If it's a "nice" vehicle.. That means: Knee-deep in rubber, the interior looks 2000, all the service and then some has been done, any dings and dent's have to be pointed out because, you wouldn't see em any other way --- and it "stands tall" ..

Then they probably have $13ish in it and with the sevice and stuff a little closer to $14 and change, so a good start point would be $15,500 and go from there, I feel $15,900 would be the ETW. (end of the world)..

    Let us know ...!

    Terry.
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
I'm thinking its about a $13Kish wholesale piece assuming that its perfect.. I like it closer to $12,500.

So if you owned it I'd tell ya to expect to get $15Kish retail.. maybe a little less.

Thanks...and can I come out of my room?

My favorite are Saab and Volvo traders. These people think that no matter how many miles they have on their car they are still worth the moon.

I had a deal earlier where a guy left because he was peeved that we could not sell him a car at 100 over and give him kbb for his 92 740 turbo wagon with 200,000 miles.

Kelly calls this gem for $3700. Are you kidding? I don't care what kind of car it is, a 200,000 mile car can be worth no more than 500-1000, especially in the Northeast.
  • lancerfixerlancerfixer Member Posts: 1,284
High mileage RWD Volvos live in their own little universe where the laws of physics do not apply. That guy could likely get four grand or more if he sold that car by himself, assuming it needed little or nothing, especially if it's a '92 Turbo wagon, ESPECIALLY in the Volvo-happy northeast. You don't deal with Volvos much, do you?
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
You're right there. My boss has a 1993 940 Turbo wagon. He recently dropped $2K into servicing that 225K beast.

KBB just showed me $6400, NADA $9,800 and Edmunds $5,200 for that thing at retail. Perhaps the cost of seller's maintenance justifies the selling price!!
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
I think that if it is clean..

$1,500 easy wholesale... probably closer to $2K.

$3,700 is smoking a lot of crack.

    Bill
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
Yes the miles DO help just a tich! You can come out of your room now. Good boy :)

    $21,999? Nooo... dont pay that.

Figure it for like $16,500-17K wholesale. They COULD have as much as $18K in it.

$20-20,500 retail is, I think, all the $$.

Start em at $18,500 as Terry would say, as your opening offer, and try to keep it under $20K.

    Hope this helps!

If most people driving SAABs knew how little they were worth, their heads would explode.

I just bought a SUPER nice 1999 9-3 Cabrio for a customer. Silver/Grey int, 29K miles, super super clean.

I think I paid $16K or so for it.

Whaddya suppose an off lease base model 9-5 would run? Like, maybe a 2000? 5-speed, of course; color is irrelevant. I'd prefer a wagon, but a sedan would be ok, too. MUST have the cold weather package, and the interior could be anything but black leather (ouch.)
Also, what about a 9-3, same parameters?

What about the SAAB 340 owners? Would their head explode?

Looking for a 1988 340A, low hours, No damage history..EGPWS, TCAS II......Lemme know when one comes across at Imperial. :)
  • lancerfixerlancerfixer Member Posts: 1,284
The 340...the only Saab I DON'T like...thankfully, they're phasing in regional jets (Bombardier CRJs) to replace them at our regional airport for their run up to MSP. :-)
  • subypowersubypower Member Posts: 50
I know a few Saab's we had where we overallowed sat on the lot forever. This used to be Saab country but everyone got fed up with $900 fixes every couple of months.

I agree, there are plenty of Volvo nuts out there who would actually pay for a 200,000 mile car. Problem is in the northeast, that's 200,000 miles worth of road salt.
  • lancerfixerlancerfixer Member Posts: 1,284
I was back in Boston visiting family over the holidays. There still seemed to be more than enough Saabs and Volvos to go around... :-)

Hmm.. a loaded 9-5? (Only way they really come)

    a 99 with low miles? Mid-upper teens. $13-14K I guess for a 50K miler.

    A 99 9-3 5-door? $12-13K I guess without looking/thinking.

I can't remember if it's leather or not.

Appears to be in great condition.

    I believe it BB's around $23,000

However, Bill...I forgot to tell you...while making a connecting flight at MSP over the holidays, I saw, parked on a ramp over in a far-flung corner of the airfield (we were stopped on a taxiway about 50 yards from it,) a C-97. It looked to be in flying condition or close to it. Do you know about this one? It almost looked like it had been a KC-97 at one point but had had the refueling pod welded over.
