That's some of the best news on the GM front that I've heard in a long time. Exactly the kind of thing that could lure me in. Of course we need a Chevy dealership within 30 miles first... I don't think the one that was in town will be replaced but I have to believe the one 20 miles up in the county seat will come back one way or another.

I plan to stop by the local Chev dealer when I'm feeling poor and test drive a Cruze when I won't be tempted to trade. Then I'll be able to report how it feels and drives.

While I haven't driven one, I sat in a high end Cruze at the auto show and I was very impressed at how nice it was inside. I suspect it would be light years nicer than the Cavalier.

You would love living here in Kellogg, ID. It is the home of Dave Smith Motors, he sells more Chevy's than any other Pac.NW dealer (3rd most in America) and he sells more Chryslers than any other dealer in the world. No kidding.

A lot of us boomers ar falling on hard times. The Egyptian uprising means even higher prices for one and all. But I'm buying a new car in 2013 of some variety. That's my long-range plan.

Dave Smith was killed about 5 years ago in a diving accident but his sons are keeping Dave Smith Motors alive. Our son has walked down the hill to look for work a couple times but needs to be more persisent and he'll get a job there. They're planning on growing!

That's the best time to do it, when you're feeling poor! Hate to say it, but I'm getting into a bit of a trading sort of mood. Not that I'm fed up with the Park Ave, but I think it's just a bit of an early spring fever.

I am kinda curious to check out the Cruze sometime. While it's smaller than what I'm used to, as long as I can fit comfortably inside, and the ride isn't compromised too severely, I'd consider one.

It's certainly a good move by GM if this car is to become real and is handled properly. The Cruze looks competent...now it needs some buzz.

May I put a deposit down for diesel Cruze #1 at MSRP?
Maybe it will sell @ Barrett-Jackson for $100k.
  • uplanderguyuplanderguy Member Posts: 16,897
..at Ron Marhofer Chevrolet in Stow, OH. It was a light blue metallic (pleasant IMO), and what drew me to it were bright wheels I'd not seen on a Cruze before. It was a stick with no options, and handsome black cloth interior. Price was $18,995.00.

I have heard/read that the ECO loses some sound insulation, which to me is a huge negative, but I sure liked what I saw at that sticker price today.

That diesel had better be a stick if it expects a pass from us.

And of course turbo'd. Leave nothing to chance I say. I hear it will have Daewoo blood. Personally I think they should stick with Isuzu. But, just do it GM. And don't make us wait over 2 years for it. What's wrong with later on this year?

    0-almost 220 kph (137 mph)
0- 60 mph looked to be 8.5 sec - he was not doing an obvious fastest time tho
0- 100 mph came up in 28 seconds and he wasn't abusing or over-revving it. He had to let off in mid 1st gear cuz it kept breaking loose, lol.
    0- 125mph came up in 43 seconds.
    0- 135 mph was 81 seconds @ 4000 rpm. strong runner. That's a heavy car.

Is Holden a Daewoo engine? Does it have a cast iron or aluminum block?

and I hope when it comes out, I'm still a General Motors Fan! :P Nothing serious, just due for an oil change, and while it's in there I'm having them check the brakes, hoses, coolant, belts, and transmission fluid. Just maintenance stuff, really.

That stuff can really add up. But not doing the preventive type maintenance can really add up when something fails.

When I had the coil pack/spark plug issue with my Expedition last year. Since it was around 60K miles, I had the trans fluid changed, front and rear diff, plus transfer case fluid etc. All told, 1 setup of spark plugs, 1 coil pack, and the fluid changes ran over $1800. Granted the labor for the spark plugs that broke off was nearly half the bill.

I certainly wouldn't expect you to have anything remotely that outrageous.
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,032
Just got a call from the mechanic about 20 mins ago, and he said that all the Park Ave really needed was an oil change. Belts, hoses, coolant, looked fine. Brakes were at about 50%. And he said the transmission fluid looked new.

So, no need to take out a second mortgage on the house just yet!

Cars are easily replaced. Glad to hear she's OK. Shaken up no doubt.

I see a 2011 Lacrosse in your future;)

...everybody! I appreciate it. Hopefully, her car can be repaired. I don't feel like having to make another car payment again. I just paid off the Cadillac DTS in November. I was hoping to get another two years or more out of her LaCrosse.

She's been talking about getting another LaCrosse in that pearlescent white finish like my old 2002 Cadillac Seville STS. I guess I'll find out what's going to happen when I see the body shop and insurance people on Thursday.
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,032
Damn, sorry to hear that Lemko! I'm glad that she's okay, though! Hopefully the car's not too serious and doesn't get totaled out. I know how much your wife likes that car....although I'm sure she'll like the new LaCrosse even more!
  • tlongtlong Member Posts: 5,194
Glad she's ok Lemko, and good luck fixing/replacing the car.

The main thing is she is fine. Cars are replaceable.

Now she can buy another LaCrosse or even a CTS!

We like pictures here. A documentation of the damage in a few pics would be appreciated. And good luck on getting a quality repair. I always worry when I have to get one of mine repaired that it will be good afterwards.

Good to hear she's OK. That can be scary stuff. In 93 I had a similar accident. Don't sign off on the "she's OK " part until she's had a little time in case a later problem comes up from it. It did with me and I'd already signed off - but I have complicated medical issues that entered into that.

Hey, you've had it in your mind to get a new LaCrosse.....

Glad your wife wasn't hurt. As for the car, I'd fix it and flip it. And make a diminished value claim against the moron's insurance(assuming he has any).

She loves that car and talks about it as if it were an S-Class Mercedes or 7-Series BMW. She's also hoping the car isn't totalled out calling that the absolute worst-case scenario. The car is still driveable, but it's been sitting in the driveway as I don't want her driving it in that condition. I don't know what hidden damage may have been done. She keeps saying it's seems to be riding low in the front.

I think we would've eventually bought a new LaCrosse or Regal, (or even a Verrano if fuel prices keep at this pace) but I was hoping that would be at least two years into the future. Maybe I'll let her have the Mercury and get myself another hooptie.
  • dieselonedieselone Member Posts: 5,729
If it's drivable, it probably isn't totaled. Hopefully, you'll get it back in just as good of condition as prior to the accident.
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,032
Yeah, I agree with Dieselone...if it's driveable, it might not be that bad. How would you say it compares to, say, my Intrepid when it got whacked?
    image

My Trep was totaled by that minor amount of damage, but it was also 10 years old and had 150,000 miles on it. And that impact managed to tear a big wiring harness clean through, which triggered some idiot lights. I think that was the final straw that totaled it.

I would've been satisfied to just keep the car and try to fix it up myself, but in Maryland if you try that, you have 90 days to get it fixed, inspected (and I'm sure the inspection might find something else wrong) and then all you get is a salvage title.

In addition to the wiring harness, I think the insurance company also figured on replacing the fender (I would've just pulled it out), the hood (it was crimped slightly, but you can't see it from this pic) and the fascia (which I could've just reattached). My attitude with the the car was to just replace the headlight, splice the wires back together, and replace the windshield washer fluid bottle, which is down in front of the tire, and had gotten cracked.

Even if the damage to your wife's LaCrosse is worse, at least it's a newer car with less miles, and more book value, so there's a better chance it won't get totaled.
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
Looks a lot worse than that! It is hit in the front left corner like your 'Trep, but not only is the headlamp assembly, busted, the hood is crushed, the bumper assembly is crushed, the parking lamp is gone, the left front fender is crushed, the driver's door is bashed in, and the left rear door and left quarter panel are gouged. I'll post pictures as soon as I can download them to Photobucket. I miss Carspace!

    Lexus: 26,674 (Down) 9% "

I like how you're taking your time. Seems like many accident victims rush out and replace their wrecked car the next day, usually with the same model, without considering all the options.

Seems like many accident victims rush out and replace their wrecked car the next day, usually with the same model, without considering all the options.

Hate to say it, but when my Intrepid got totaled out, my first impulse was to go out and buy another. I found a blue 2000 ES with the bigger 3.2 V-6, leather, sunroof, alloys, fully-loaded, for something like $4800. I think it had about 86,000 miles on it.

But the more I thought about it, after having an Intrepid for 10 years, did I really want another one? Plus, while my Intrepid was fairly reliable, in general they're not the most durable thing in the world, and a lot of neglect can happen in 86,000 miles.

The next car I found online was a 2000 Bonneville SE with leather and a sunroof, similar miles, for about $4700. Only downside was that it was white, which is not my most favorite color. Plus, I had a white Dart for almost 18 years, so I was pretty much over that color. Called the dealership before going to look at it, because it was about 40-50 miles away. Turned out it had just sold.

But then, not too much later, I stumbled across the 2000 Park Ave at the local Cadillac dealer, called about it, asked if it had a sunroof, salesman said he didn't think so, but he'd check. Came back, said it DID have one, so I went in to look at it, and bought it the next day.

Admittedly, I probably should have shopped around a little more, but it's been a pretty good car. And I think that no matter what you find, as soon as you buy it, something else will come along to make you second-guess your decision.

I was something like 26 days between cars. Trep got wrecked on November 18. While I bought the Buick on December 12, it needed some part to pass inspection, so I couldn't pick it up until the 14th. That was a rough 26 days, too! I was depending mainly on my '79 5th Ave to get around, but its back tires are balding a bit, so if it rained or was icy I had to really watch it. And as the weather got colder, it started stalling out when I had to come to a stop, or take a sharp turn. On Thanksgiving Day it rained, and I was supposed to run my 95 year old Granddad up to see the rest of the family, about 60 miles away. Didn't want to do it in a 31 year old car with balding tires and a habit of stalling. So I took him in my '76 LeMans, instead. :P

And not everyone has a fleet like you that they can draw on while they shop for the replacement rig.

I've been chauffeuring my wife around in the Grand Marquis for the past week or so. Good thing our work places are close together. Her insurance entitles her to a rental car, but only pays 80% of the cost. I'm going to drive her around as long as possible to avoid the 20% she'd have to pay out of pocket. I would let her use the Grand Marquis, but she says she's too nervous to drive such a big car. She used to drive the 1988 Park Ave with no problems as I think it was even smaller than the LaCrosse.

Did the air bag fire? If it did, with the damage you described, I'd say the Lacrosse is going to the boneyard.
  • dieselonedieselone Member Posts: 5,729
It certainly could be be totaled. It's probably worth at most $10k. I'd guess if the damage starts to get much more than $5k it's done for.

And it doesn't take much to get $5k in damage.
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,032

Would a 2005 LaCrosse have side airbags? I don't think getting hit in the side would pop the front airbags, since those get triggered by sudden deceleration, and getting hit and shoved off to the side wouldn't generate that force.

Side airbags still seem like a newfangled thing to me, but they've probably been out a lot longer than I think they have!
  • fezofezo Member Posts: 10,386
Side air bags must have started getting common in the early 00s. My 00 Accord doesn't have them but the 04 Ody does. The Ody just has basic side air bags - not the dozen or whatever you get in cars now.
