Front wheels/tires = directional control and lateral stability.
Rear wheels/tires = engine leading or lagging (braking) torque.
Moving up north again after many years in the south and need to buy/lease new luxury sedan. I currently drive GS300 and have been looking at A6 2.7t due to quattro but driver leg space is concern since I'm a big guy. I really like both the LS430 & E500 but hesitate due to RWD.
It doesn't matter how conservative a driver you think you are on snow and ice, there are times when we all "wink" out. Then there's the very real matter of the OTHER driver sharing the road with you.
Get a good AWD vehicle as an alternative if you can afford it.
The life you save may be your own! Or MINE.
Oh, one more thing. The more aggressive the tire's tread is for wintertime snow and ice duty the less NORMAL roadbed traction it will have. In the US, except maybe Alaska, even in wintertime, snow or ice covered roadbeds are not the predominant circumstance.
I start my Lexus LS430 in Palm Springs, CA. It announces, "The Lexus Link system is active." I drive out on an unmapped desert road, which gradually becomes less and less a road, but just desert. It is beginning to get dark. Suddenly I have a flat tire.
In desperation I push the Lexus Link Emergency Assist button. No response (I had forgotten that I haven't renewed my subscription). I suffer great pain -- physical, financial, and especially emotional.
This scenario is of course fictitious, but if it were real could I sue Lexus for telling me that Lexus Link is active when in fact it isn't?
My real motive here is to come up with an incentive for Lexus to devise a mechanism for turning off the Lexus Link announcement (if the subscription has expired) whenever the car is started.

I never read-up on Lexus Link but I think your case would be akin to a lawsuit against your pharmacist, doctor or even the drug company itself for failing to renew your prescription.
Has anyone else ever heard this error message? I hope this was just a on-time freak occurance. Inquiring minds want to know.
Thanks,
Paul
Although I have heard rumors of the same 4.3L V8 having more power, I believe it is for 2004 but not positive.
While I was willing to give Bangle the benefit of the doubt on the 7 (which, to my eye is strikingly beautiful from the C pillar forward), the new Z4 suggests that he is committed to producing "different" cars even if he has to make them ugly as sin to distinguish them from the masses. Hard to imagine that one company can design the exquisite Z8 and the hideous Z4 w/in 2 yrs of each other.
Thanks for any advice anyone can offer.
Oh, I did have the lights off from automatic.
While this isn't scientific the trend is there, all of us (including me) who used the automatic headlight selection all the time have had to replace batteries every year or so. Those who leave it in either on (for full time operation like daylight running lights) or who turn them on manually have not had to replace their battery.
This is from 9 different owners that I am friends with for what it's worth. I hope Lexus is listening and looks at the electrical draw from the automatic headlight system.
I'm now researching moving from my GS to an LS and had hoped this was a model specific issue. Even so, this is the only maintenance issue I have ever had and while I am looking at the new E-class, Audi and BMW's the quality and reliability keep me coming back to Lexus.
I'm sure they haven't changed this for '03.

Because the OEM battery that the LS comes with cannot be topped off with distilled water, the water will eventually boil off, expose the plates, and kill the battery. So, when you replace it, replace it with one that is labelled "maintenance free" but which has little covers that you can pry off to add water from time to time.
When a car battery discharges low enough to need a jump start, I replace it. Lead-acid automotive batteries don't like to be discharged, and by the time they've gone down that low, they've already been damaged. Batteries are pretty cheap considering that they are one of the few things that can really strand you.
There is a really good FAQ on this that has been floating around on the net for some time now. It has more than you'll want to know in it. I ran a quick search and found a copy of it here:

aggie76 - the dynamic laser cruise is the most intelligent feature in the LS. I use it all the time and love it.
Question: Is there anyone out there who also has a 99 (98-2000 were the same I believe) that can give me words of encouragement. I like it so far but my wife is still crying over the RL which she had become attached to. She's refused to drive the LS and it's been 3 weeks! (Anyone else have this problem? I told her to not fall in love with anything that can't love you back, but you know how women are. Just kidding, I'll cry like a baby when I finally get rid of my ol' 76 GMC 1/2 ton pickup!)
Also, Anything to look out for on maintaining this car. Any heads-up stuff?
Thanks for listening to me, Charlie
All you need is to get your wife to take that first step and drive the LS, she will be more than convinced you made the right choice.
Good luck and let us know how it turned out....
