I spoke to the sales manager who sold me the car last night and I feel better.

He told me he has driven 2 different Diamantes since 1997 and both the transmission acted the same. That it is a trate of the 97 Diamante. He described it perfectly; the light pop of the transmission when coming to a stop and he said that his diamantes also hesitated when giving it full throttle from a slow roll.

He said I would get used to it and won't even notice it in a month. He added when accellerating quickly to still give it only 1/4 gas at first then I could floor it.

I have always driven american cars except for a standard transmission honda so my initial feeling was something was wrong.

Of course I would feel more comfortable if some of the owners in this newsgroup also confirmed this.

I have a 1999 and never have any hesitation in upshifting or downshifting, particularly with the engine reving at the same time. There is a combination of slowing and sudden acceleration that may delay a downshift, but the engine doesn't rev. I never get a clunky downshift. Upshifting is so smooth in all gears that I really do not percieve the shift. Acceleration is very linear and smooth, more so than many other cars I have driven.

Transmission feel is somewhat subjective, so my opinion may not be the same as yours. I certainly wouldn't take the word of the sales manager. His job is to make you happy with the car no matter what. The transmission is the same in the 1997-2001 model, so drive a new 2001 model and see if it feels the same to you. If the 2001 is a lot better, then press the service department to check the usual things that can cause the problem. You want to get this problem resolved while the car is under warranty.

Check the safety info on this site. Check out the technical service bulletins for your car. Also check the consumer complaints for your car's make year and model. Hopefully you'll find some answers.

I decided to run a carfax on my car and it showed the following:

09/29/2000 22,528 Auto Auction Sold at auction

    12/21/2000 27,528 Pennsylvania Title issued

I bought my car in 2/2001 with 22,700. It appears to be an honest mistake, a typo and I really don't care about a lousy 5000 miles, but I am afraid now that the car is registered to me at 22,700 and the title will come up bad with an odemeter mismatch record.

This would effect me trying to sell the car at a later day.

I called the dealer and the manager is going to get back to me about whats steps can be taken to correct the title.

I can't catch a break! Every time I buy a car I get screwed somehow. It's not like I got a great deal either. I paid a little over used retail for the car! Which I would not have bothered me if it wasn't for the other problems!

    GOOD NEWS!

I returned the car to the dealer. They put me into a brand new 2001 Diamante LS without the weather package.

Its a 48 month lease from Mitsubishi Motors for $428 a month. The Residual at the end of the lease is $13500 or so. I also paid nothing out of pocket to start the lease because they are refunding my extended warranty ($1370) from the previous car I mentioned in other posts.

I really wanted to just buy it with the 1.9% financing but then it would still have been too much.

Leases scare me but the dealer told me I could purchase the vehicle at any time of the lease. The price would be the current value of the car. Maybe in a year or two I will look into that if I like it.

Anyone else lease a new one? If so what did you pay?

I saw an advertisement for an ES at 42 month and $349. There also was $3000 due at signing. I think I did okay comparing it to that.

You will most likely be much happier with your new 2001. Now you can be sure that your Diamante is properly taken care of since new.

Yes, I love this car. I do have one problem I need to call the dealer about. I get steering wheel vibration constantly over 55mph. I suspect the Good Years and a wheel balance.

I expected more from a 29,000 automobile but I'm sure they can take care of it.
  • bob_pabob_pa Member Posts: 18
The vibration is getting better on its own. THe service dept. said it was probably a flat spot on the tire from sitting for a while. If it doesn't completely go away within 3000 miles I should bring it back to service.
  • vivonavivona Member Posts: 410
Though the vibration could be due to a flat spot, Goodyear Eagle tires are known for having sidewall stiffness variances around the circumference of the tire. This variation in sidewall stiffness will show up as vibration only when the tire is on the car. When the tire is mounted on a balancing machine it is balanced as to variations in weight distribution, but not sidewall variation. Because of this, Hunter developed a special balancer called the GSP9700 that presses a roller against the tread with 700 pounds of force while the tire is being spun for balancing. The machine can then instruct the tech to put the weights where they are needed to offset sidewall variation as well as weight variation.

If you continue to have the vibration and your dealer does a normal spin balancing, that will probably not solve the problem. You need to have the tires balanced on a Hunter GSP9700. To find one in your area, go to http://www.gsp9700.com/ and select "Locate a GSP 9700". You can enter bogus name and address information for privacy, but be sure to use your correct city, state and zip code. While at the web site, read all the information about the GSP9700 so you can talk intelligently on the subject with your dealer. Insist that Mitsubishi pay for the balancing under warranty. If the tires cannot be balanced to under 10 pounds of road force variation, get Goodyear to replace the tire under the tire warranty as having "excessive road disturbance".

In all cases, absolutely insist that your wheels be removed and replaced with hand tools only and the lug nuts tightened with a hand torque wrench. NEVER let a mechanic use an air impact wrench on your lug nuts. Mechanics routinely overtighten lug nuts by as much as 200% and that will lead to brake rotor warping. This is not a weakness of the Diamante, it is true of any car.

I found a local Ford dealer whos service department uses the Hunter GSP9700. I asked them how much it would cost to balance my Diamante's tires on it and they said $39.95. Thats cheap enough for me not to bother the dealer and go through the hassles they will give me.

Any advice? Does that sound like the right price? Whats the proper pounds the lug nuts should be tightened to?
  • vivonavivona Member Posts: 410
$39.95 sounds about right. If you have a Goodyear dealer in town that has a GSP9700, you might be able to get them to do the job for free under the tire warranty.

Lug nuts should be tightened to 65-80 ft. lbs. A good target is 75 ft. lbs.

I,m on empty - when is my low fuel light supposed to come on? How many gallons (liters) is supposed to be left when the light is triggered. If I read my schematics for this circuit correctly, the light is not tested at startup! This is a 2001 D.

    Thanks

Went to my local good-year and they said all four tires were bad. They have order me new ones and they will get installed on Tuesday.

Not a warm and fuzzy feeling inside when you buy a new car that has 4 bad tires.....

Now to see if I can get service to fix a rattle in my dash. The damn passenger air-bag rattles and it goes away if you push down on the cover. Any ideas if Mitsubishi's warranty would fix this on a 250 mile car?

    Bob

What exactly did good year say were wrong w/all your tires? I have a 2001 and have some slight vibration around 45-55 I think. Have not had the tires re-balanced yet however. I'm wondering if it is a quality control problem at the Aussie Goodyear plant that makes the tires for the D??

    Thanks

Was thinking of having my windows tinted, but have a few concerns.

    1. How well does the film hold up on frameless windows? Does the film tend to peel at the edge?
    2. How about film application around the third stoplight on the back shelf between the speakers? Seems like you can only tint AROUND the light, which I think might look bogus from the outside.

    Thanks for the inputs.

    Hello all,
Been a while since Ive had anything to say - seems everyone has the same problems I do. By the way - if anyone is looking for good deals on D's - there is a used car dealership in my area (central MO) that seems to get its hands on a lot of Mitsu lease turn ins - anyhow - the prices seem to be incredible, and the dealership is very reputable. For example - the last three 97 Diamante LS's they have sold have all gone for 9800 to 12000 with less than 30K miles - WHICH....leads me to my question. MY Diamante is leased and judging by the rate at which they depreciate, the car will not have anywhere near the market value of what my buyout price is. Has anyone ever attempted to negotiate with the bank on a end of term buy out? Seems like the bank should be flexible - for example if my buy out is 14,900 and the reasonable price at auction would be 8,000 why wouldnt the bank jump at the chance to sell me the car for say 9,500 still making more than if I would have just turned the car in. Just curious if anyone has ever accomplished this.

I have a 1999 D, had it at the dealer and they say I need new brakes and rotors turned. Service Manager says its common in Atlanta. I told him I have been here for 4 years and have put over 40k on a chrysler and haven't needed brakes yet. I read about the class action suit on Galants Brakes. Anything going on with Diamanate?

edwardoplunket-The fuel light comes on at approximately 2 gallons left in the tank. When I drive to the point where the light comes on steadily, it takes about 17 gallons to fill up and it's a 19 gallon tank.

    Master Vivona,
Have you ever tightened the parking brake?
Mine takes over 6 clicks before it grabs the rear wheels, really just one click to the max setting.

Mitsi service wants to charge $45 for the job I say it can't be that hard...can it?!

My 1999 D' now had 16000 miles and I just returned from the Mitsi workshop to replace the a portion of the exhaust that I believe had a hole.

The exhaust portion was right after the header and quite a large piece. Cost $240 but was under warranty so I didn't pay a thing.

Each time I started the motor in the morning it had a high shrill which died down as the engine warmed, then again when I accelerated. I didn't realise that it was sounding that bad till my wife told me that I was waking up the neighborhood each morning. You see I have my stereo up that I don't hear a thing!

Funny thing to happen when it is stainless steel exhaust system.

Now it very quite and I sense better pickup, I must have been missing some backpressure with that exhaust leak.

-No problem with tinting the rear window.
The window tinter will remover the rear seat and pop the rear parcel shelf that includes the rear high brake light.

Also just go to a reputable tinting firm with a lifetime warranty and you should do just fine!

Ask your dealer to check your VIN number against those that have been recalled for the parking brake. Mitsubishi and my dealer never contacted me about this, it was only through this board that I discovered the recall. My VIN matched with the numbers being recalled. The replacement should be free to you.

My 98D fuel light also comes on with about 2 gallons left like Mr Vivona said. However, if you go around a sharp curb, like an exit ramp, or uphill with only 2 gallons I found the engine starts to sputter because the fuel is unable to get to the intake. In other words, don't rely on the light. I now never go below 1/8 tank as I almost ran out of gas twice. The older D's light came on at 3gallons and were a bit more usable.

I have a 1999 D. 60,000 miles and I just put the 5th yes 5th set of tires on my car. It has been in the shop 22 times for the vibrating problem over 55 MPH.

I have a file so thick on what everyone claims the problem is, including balancing problems, car out of alignment (been aligned 5 times). Even took the car to a different Mitsu. dealership and put in writing they thought the car had been dropped!

Any suggestions on how to get rid of the vibration? I feel I have really tried everything. VERY FRUSTRATED!
  • edwardoplunketedwardoplunket Member Posts: 31
Can you post more details about your vibration problems? What you had to go through to get the tires replaced, etc. I have a 2001 and have some vibration around 45-55, but I have not focused on it that much. I have ojnly 1300 miles so far. Have you had any discussions w/Mitsubishi or a local Mits rep? Thanks.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a suspension "upgrade" on a 2001 LS? I like the comfy ride, but the body roll is beginning to get to me. Also, any recommendations for a low-profile wheels?
  • vivonavivona Member Posts: 410
Have you had your tires balanced on a Hunter GSP9700? If not, that is most likely your solution because the machine will check for a bent or uneven rim, tire runout and uneven sidewall compliance. Read about it at www.gsp9700.com

My '99 D (16,000 miles) has a whining sound--similar to that made by running a wet finger along a crystal goblet's rim--when the engine is warm and I take my foot off the brake pedal from a stop. I took it to the dealer; they said they couldn't find the problem and that I should wait until it gets worse. The regional rep looked and drove in the car with me, too. Any advice, suggestions, or similar experiences?

This noise, the parking brake recall, a misaligned front passenger door, the infamous vibration over 45 mph (Yokohama Tires), and a burned out foglamp are the problems I've had.

    Thanks for any help.

I have a 97 Diamante LS and the transmission shifts very abruptly from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. I have heard that this car is suspect to transmission problems or does it need a new transmission computer? I hear the transmission computer cost around $200. CurtisHall

I currently have front brake and rotor problems and I have decided to buy a Steve Millen a.k.a Stillen aftermarket brake/rotor package. It cost about the same as the dealer brake/rotor package and are a better product. Do the comparison. Mr.Vivona what do you think about Stillen aftermarket brakes? They have a large following. Tell me what you think.
  • bob_pabob_pa Member Posts: 18
They said something like exceesive run out and side variance..dont know exactly.

With the new tires the car doesn't vibrate nearly as bad. There is still a little around 50 - 60 but gets better around 65 again. Hopefully this will go away when the tires wear in.

I'm starting to regret my purchase. Hopefully the car will hold up.
  • camoncamon Member Posts: 98
I had the same problem with my 92D when it was brand new. I took it back to the dealer numerous times and they tried everything . Finally the dealer replaced all 4 Yokohama tires with 4 new Michelin tires with a less aggresive design and speed rating, balanced them well, and the problem finally stopped. Good Luck, I know the feeling.
  • vivonavivona Member Posts: 410
The 97 Diamante had a service bulletin #97110123014 issued for a harsh 2-3 shift. A revised AT computer fixed it. A transmission should not be repaired or replaced until a knowledgeable technician has diagnosed whether the problem is caused by a sensor, the computer, the wiring harness, a mechanical part or a hydraulic problem. To just replace parts, i.e. the computer, is a waste of money unless you happen to luck out and replace the bad part first. There are many electrical, mechanical and hydraulic tests that can be done on a transmission. Unfortunately, finding a dealer or shop that really knows how to diagnose transmissions can be a challenge. I would at least verify that the work called for in the service bulletin has been done.

As to the brakes, I would read the full article at http://www.geocities.com/diamanteowner/article2.htm and be sure that the correct procedure for wheel lug tightening is followed regardless of whether you go factory or aftermarket. I have no experience with Stillen's products. By following correct maintenance procedure I have never had to resort to aftermarket parts, and that includes brakes. Because brakes affect the overall stopping characteristic of a car, you have to be sure aftermarket parts will not change the dynamics during braking, causing improper weight distribution or excessive nose down. If you want to give Stillen a try, seal up the factory calipers and rotors in plastic bags and keep them on the shelf in case you ever want to switch back. You don't want the old calipers to corrode internally. Be sure Stillen gives a reasonable warranty. And make sure those lug nuts are not overtightened or your Stillen rotors will warp just like any other rotor.

  • curtishall1curtishall1 Member Posts: 15
Thanks for the info concerning the transmission. Today I have a scheduled appointment for the transmission and I will bring the service bulletin to there attention first thing. As for the rotor/brake situation I am going to order the Stillen parts Monday. I will post a message and tell you how it comes out. As for the 97 LS I really feel this car has the potential to be a very nice value but it seems like Mits. cuts corners in too many key areas. I feel MMUSA needs to spend more time looking at sites like this one and www.carreview.com. You can read my other comments concerning this car on www.carreview.com. I have owned this car for two months and I have had in for service four times. I want to believe that this car is a good one but I'm having a hard time right now believing it.
  • vivonavivona Member Posts: 410
curtishall1--I read your car review comments. I note that you bought your Diamante used, so your opinion is based on the service and treatment that car has received during its life and may not be a fair assessment of Diamante's in general. I bought my Diamante new. It is a 1999. I you read my car review comment, you will see I have over two years of experience (now 18,000) miles and I give the Diamante the hightest ratings. I have five personal friends that have owned Diamantes and all of them love them. Not one has had a problem and all would buy one again. In fact one did!

Hopefully, you can get the problems with your particular Diamante solved so you can enjoy the car they way I enjoy mine. Let me know how the Stillen rotors work out. I did visit their site and when I put a 1997-2000 Diamante in their database search, it said "the database is being updated". Did you actually find a direct replacement for the rotors, or are you using a substitute from a different model? Are you replacing just the rotors, or also the pads and calipers?

    Mr. Vivona
  • curtishall1curtishall1 Member Posts: 15
Mr. Vivona I took the Diamante in for the transmission problem that I am having today. I rode with the Tech. and I tried to explain the problem and he said that when he first drove this car back in 1997 he also thought there was a problem. But once sitting in on a Tech meeting concerning this car's transmission they told him that the trans. has a Adaptive Elecronic Transmission Control System which adapts to the drivers driving style. I used the service bulletin info that you gave me and it has had its trans. computer switched out for a revised system. He also took down the serial numbers on the trans. to see if the particular model A/T has ever had a recall or needed service. I will know something Monday. I had a chance look back at some of your other comments concerning the cars future look under the Mitsubishi Australia site. There was something in particular that I saw in the Australia model (Verada) that I feel would work better than current transmission. And that is the Sequential Sportshift transmission which is also used in the new Montero. Take another look at the Australia site and tell what you think about that system in this car. It made me say "HHMMMM".
Concerning the Rotor/Brake situation. My answer to your questions 1.) I actually found a direct replacement for the rotors. 2.) I am replacing just the rotors & pads - no calipers. Do you think I should replace the calipers? And if so, who sells those items besides the dealer. To find out more about the rotor/brake application call Stillen (714)540-9154 ext.185 KENNY. Thanks

    curtishall1
  • curtishall1curtishall1 Member Posts: 15
Mr. Vivona I also asked the Tech about the brakes/rotors and you know the mechanics are always going to say buy OME to insure vehicle quality. BUT AND I MEAN BUT in this case he recommended using Aftermarket parts as long as the lugnuts aren't overtorqued. That was shocking! I finally got a honest answer to a COSTLY problem. curtishall1

We purchased our 2000 D new in November, 1999. There are now just under 22,000 miles on it. Last week I had the front brake pads replaced. I didn't wait one day too soon. They were almost completely worn. However, the rotors are fine, so half hour and $61.00 later, I was driving down the road again. I have read in this forum many times about rotor warping. I am glad to say, we have not experienced any of that. I am also very pleased to say the car runs very strong and smooth at very low, very high, and all speeds in between. We have not experienced any vibration problems at all. I am looking forward to purchasing some new, wider tires for it. Mr. Vivona, do you have a "wide tire" size recommendation? Thanks

I'm beginning to noitice paint chipping on the front of my 2001 Diamante LS. The car is only 5 months old with 3000 miles on it and I don't tailgate. I'm just kind of curious if this is normal. This is my first new car so I'm not sure what to expect from paint chipping on the front. My 8 year old commuter car doesn't have paint chipping. Is this the Mitsubishi "quality" that people have been talking about? I like the car overall, but I'm just concerned because parts that have chipped are starting to rust. Any recommendations for a body shop in the Sillicon valley California area?
  • vivonavivona Member Posts: 410
I see no reason to replace the calipers. Just make sure when you replace the pads that the posts that the calipers slide on are properly lubricated so that caliper can freely float.

  • vivonavivona Member Posts: 410
I am glad to hear you are happy with your Diamante. If you make sure that the wheel lugs are always tightened only with a hand torque wrench (and NOT after being first tightened with an impact wrench) your rotors should last the life of the car.

As to wider tires, I would check the owners manual for recommended sizes. If you want to go wider than that, you'll probably have to go with wider rims, but make sure that what you choose will clear body and suspension parts. The tirerack web site may be of help:

    http://www.tirerack.com/mycar/baseframeset.jsp?model=

    Diamante+ES&make=Mitsubishi&year=2000

Join the above URL back together in to one long string. Edmunds software doesn't allow real long words.

Have fun with the tire rack web site. You can try on different wheels to see what looks good. Note the rim size and suggested tires. Any rim that is the same size as your stock rims should have a recommended tire that will fit your rims. Call tire rack for answers to fitment questions.

I haven't checked this discussion site in a while as my 1999 Diamante has provided great service to me overall.
I have on occasion experienced (three times to be exact)the ignition not being able to be turned when I go to start the car without extreme difficulty, sometimes to the point that I think I'll break the key off in the ignition. This hasn't happened often and I'm not certain what I might be doing to make this happen or if it's a problem with the car. Has anyome else experienced this.
One other thing, I noticed a few people wrote about their Diamante's performance with low fuel. I'm glad it's not just my car. When the low fuel light goes on, that means low fuel! My car will hesitate like crazy when the fuel is low especially when starting out after a full stop (like at a traffic signal). So I just don't let the tank get too low and I have no problem.

I have a 01 Diamante with 650 miles that idles kind of funny to me.

When it is in park it idles fine around .9 rpm. Once your driving and come to a stop with it in gear it will bounce from .5 - .9 and get a little rough. It is not major but I never drove a new car where the idle bounced up and down.

What is the normal rpm for it to idle at? Is what I'm expierencing normal?

My 2001 w/1300 miles has no problems like you describe. It HAS however stalled when I tried to start it after the car sat in a parking lot 2 times. My dealer blamed the gas (Arco) that I was using. I'm trying Chevron now to see if I can replicate the problem.

You might try differen't gas to see if this helps.

You mentioned that the key is sometimes hard to turn. Are you using the original key or one you had made. Many times a key copy will not be quite right and the lock will be hard to turn because the pins will not be lined up correctly.

It could be that the key is hard to turn when it is in one way, but not when it is turned around 180 degrees. You could mark the key so you could see if it is in the same direction every time it jams.

I would start with a new key from the dealer and see if that solves it. If not, have the dealer service department check it out.

Well, I just traded in my Diamante 2001 LS with 5700 miles in it for a bran spanking new Acura CL Type S. The Acura dealer gave me $25600 for the Diamante, which was a big shock because I was thinking they would offer me a lot less for a 7 month old car. I got the car for 27600. Good grief, that's a good trade in Value. I remember someone posting a message that they had to drop $10k to trade their diamante after having it for only 3 months. I think they were full of it.

So, why did I trade in the car? I wanted something sportier. The only thing that I found annoying with the Diamante is some of the build quality issues that the dealer never addressed, even after repeated visits:
    1) Bad paint finish on the roof (you can see weird streaks that can't be washed off),
    2) The right doors (front, and back) don't close correctly--you had to slam them hard to get them to close or open the windows. That was really annoying. For $27600, I expect working doors.

So, how does it compare to the Acura CL? Well, it's comparing apples to oranges...one is a luxury sports coupe, and the other is a luxury sedan. I must say the Acura is a lot rougher on the road, but that is how the suspension was designed. I like feeling the road while driving. I'm still trying to decide if I'm going to miss the nice comfortable ride of the Diamante.

I have a 1993 diamante wagon with 106,000 miles and very little problem over the past 7 years. I bought it for $17,500 with 15K miles in 1994. (It was driven by the owner of the local dealership and has EVERY option and leather.)

Over the past six months it has developed a "thud" when down shifting from 2 to 1. The dealer says it needs a new tranny at $2800, but a local transmission shop says it's not a the tranny (honest or stupid?).

Has anyone else had a similar problem. Too bad Mitsu doesn't make the wagon anymore, because I'd buy a new one. What is the closest thing on the market now?

I also have a 99 Diamante. Have you tried shifting your car into Neutral to start it? It could be something having to do with the steering lock mechanism in Park.

I had a somewhat different problem with the ignition--I would turn the key in Park and NOTHING would happen. That was within my first month of owning the car -- it always started in Neutral. I took it to the dealer who took about 20 minutes to make an adjustment to the shifter and haven't had any problems since.

    Hope this helps.

Do you think service would fix a noise in my dash coming from the passenger side air bag? Its anoying and goes away if you push the flap from the airbag in. URRR only 650 miles on the car!

I'm gonna bring it in this weekend and ask them.
