Look at two of my recent posts (#3208 and 3030), which contain comments about dealer inventories in the SF and Sacramento areas and prices you should be able to negotiate. Even if inventories have tightened in the last few weeks, you should still be able to work the kinds of deals I suggested in these messages.

In fact, you should be able to work deals close to invoice even when vehicles are selling well (like the Sienna is now) and inventories are tight. See some of my other posts, which you can access by entering my screen name (anduril) in the Search This Discussion box at the bottom of this page.

Thanks for the info on the edit...

No doubt on the "back out to the garage" statement...
So you obsess for months before you purchase... then when you have it you can obsess even more!

These vans are soo cool.. Who would have ever thought that about a Minivan...

I live in Colorado. I'll be contacting Burt Toyota to see if I can get about the same deal as you. This is the thing I don't understand why some of these dealers won't budge. If there is a great sale like the one you got, there will be word of mouth. Hence, more sales and you will be getting your money in volume rather than once in a rare while someone getting ripped off. I got a quote from Fort Collins and they wanted 5k above invoice! My jaw went to the floor. Is there a way you can contact me with your name just incase you get a referral bonus? My email address is on the profile on the about me section. I don't use it much, if at all, so I'm safe. :) Thank you again! I'll let you and everyone know what I paid once I can get that brand new car in my garage. Congrats on your purchase.

Thought I would share this with you all. :)

You want to know what I don't understand? If a dealer sells cars around 3-4.5% above invoice with an easy transaction and no pressure sales that makes the customer very happy there will be word of mouth. With that word of mouth will come more cars being sold out of the lot. I'm not in the car business and I really don't know what all of your costs are, however I believe you would make more money by giving a small percentage markup. I work for a huge company... can you imagine what word of mouth would do for your sales in the future? Picture this... yeah, this dealer gave me an awesome deal. The transaction went smoothly, they were friendly, and I highly recommend them. That is worth more money than any ridiculous markup you can offer. But hey, I could be wrong and people are paying the high markups and you guys are making a fortune. Just giving my .02 cents

I was skeptical that I could actually purchase a Sienna at $200 over invoice without some "catch", but today I picked up my car and drove away with no problems! Dealers in the Albany, NY area insisted on full MSRP. Thanks to this site I found out about Autofair. They are a 4 hour drive away, but I saved $2,500!

I bought a LE (8) with BW (VSC/Trac, curtain airbags, rear audio, etc), Z1 (carpet, sill, first aid, cargo net), and WH (wireless headphones)for $25,696 including everything, except NYS sales tax (which I will begrudgingly pay when I register). Edmunds list was $28,291. They offered to sell me the Platnum warranty for $850 which I think is a good deal, but I don't buy warrantees on anything (and they were fine with that). I arranged my own HELOC financing, so I can't speak to their financing plans. I was able to get a home equity line at 3.25%.

Car is great. Very smooth. Features and ride exceed my expectations. The only thing I don't like so far is the support for my left foot when driving. Hopefully, I will get used to this. It seems sort of awkward.

Yah I share your frustration! You read about people all over the country getting deals just barley above invoice and you then look in our region and its flat MSRP… Sure you can use my name.. Keep in mind my price was a LE7 so there might be different proffit margins for the different packages... My Name is Jeff Garner

I think the end of the month thing helped a lot… It seamed as it got closer to the end more people started dealing… If you can wait until the end of March I bet things will be good. That was my original plan wait until end of March… I started out thinking I would have to special order.. So I emailed off a few expecting 6 to 8 weeks… and to my amazement I had a Van 1 and ½ weeks after starting my search…

The one thing I had to come to terms with, and I’m glad I did… I initially started searching for package AM… Well in reality Toyota is only building and allocating certain packages and while you can get a different one… that is when you get into the back of the production line and end up waiting 6 to 8 weeks… In the end I settled for package BJ instead. I was a few $$$ more but after looking I like the options a bit better.

The other thing I suggest figure out invoice for your desired package, add 3 to 5 % markup, then add in your taxes and 299 dealer fee, also add 540 (rounded up) for TDA, I think were getting hit with that (seems every one will charge this). Take this as your target Out the Door price. Then when dealing with every one ask for out the door pricing. Forget all the numbers and fees in between and only look at out the door. At first I was trying to track each little fee each dealer charges and such.. they all have a few different fees and such… All that matters is the final OTD price.. I really don’t care if one dealer charges 1000 over invoice and 299 dealer fee and the other 1299 over invoice with no fees.. It’s all the same…

    Then email email email…

Thank you for your suggestions. I called Burt Toyota and left a voicemail. The internet manager is out today. Wow, how can you be gone on a Sat on the last day of the month? Oh well... will be trying others. I agree with you on the OTD price. I did a price report from Edmunds and shows the invoice price to be $28957 (that is including Destination charge). With 3 percent markup that would be $29825 plus tax. I can always start low and work my way up a little. Sounds like a great deal for the customer and the dealer. I agree with ya at end of the month sales, they want their kickbacks! Even at 3 percent markup, they are still bringing in about 2k. I think that's better than nothing. :) If I purchase the car at Burt, I'll give them your name. Hopefully they can give you a gift of some sort. Thanks again.

Leap year - last day of the month is tomorrow :-)

I don't think the internet salespeople always have commission structures like the typical floor salesperson. And the quota or bonus period for the sales staff may not be determined monthly at your dealer.

As far as volume dealers, most dealers make more money off of used car sales and service, so many have less incentive to mark down new car sales.

Or so I keep reading around here.

Can some one tell me what brand of tires ship on the Sienna? I thought it was Dunlop but I noticed that the Consumer Reports Sienna Test mentions Michelin.

Over the last several months I have been using this board as a gauge of what I should be paying for a Sienna. Being in NJ, I know the dealers are more diffcult to work with. I feel I got a very good deal this past week and wanted to share with the other readers of this board. I got an XLE with pkg 12 for $30,250. I was going to use a fax service called fightingchance.com which my in-laws used and they got a great deal on a Volvo XC. But I felt I got a great price for the Sienna and felt very comfortable with the dealership. Good luck to all!! And by the way we love our Sienna, we got a salsa red with fawn leather interior.

I am waiting for our Arctic Frost XLE Limited to arrive any day now on the truck. You said they quoted you $850 for Platinum warranty. How many miles/years/deductible was that? I was quoted for a 7/100/0 $1320 and they told me it's one price for everyone. I did however find a dealer elsewhere that will sell me this same Platinum warranty for $815...just thought the selling dealer would make some concession to a customer. Let me know, thanks in advance. Good luck w/ your new van. Also, I am out of state. My salesman at Autofair kept telling me how big their dealership was. Are there really that many people working there? Are they a huge dealership?

I finally found the time to follow up onmy posts from last fall. Our salsa red pearl awd le#4 w/ gold package and floor mats came in 48 days after putting in my order (on aSaturday afternoon; almost exactly between the 6 to 8 weeks promised. We paid approximately 30,000 msrp, 32k and change w/ ttl, and 2k given for my 1995 accord ex wagon w/163,000 miles and a few healthy dents in an otherwise servicable vehicle; for a little more than 30 k out the door. After initially concluding the sienna was by far the best awd van available I have to say we are thrilled with our sienna. It is by far the finest vehicle I have owned or driven for that matter. In inspecting the vehicle upon delivery my wife ( a former federal ag. inspector could only find one blemish from a small dab of glue onthe center console which the salesman offered to replace immediately. (We declined as the matter was inconsequential) We have driven the vehicle for nearly 5 months and over 4400 miles with no problems noteven any rattles or whistles. Even my wife who went into this purchase a kicking and screaming van -hater absolutely loves how easily the van handles and its quiet smooth ride. I love the traction and stability control awd side curtain airbags and run flat tires as well as the 2+ ton heft of the vehicle to protect my most precious investments my wife and son.
  • phil412phil412 Member Posts: 4
I also wanted to indicate the dealership and the salesman were honest, friendly and gracious in making this transaction as smooth and expeditious as possible. All my expectations have been met or exceeded. Although I live 40 miles from Oak Lawn Toyota I wouldn't hesitate to deal with them again. They kept every promise and have gone out of their way to encourage customer loyalty in the future. I especially appreciate the kindness shown my wife recently when the vehicle was brought in for an oil change. As a bargain shopper all my life it was hard to pay sticker; but I am fully satisfied with the product and the service. You get what you pay for. Thank you also to the Edmund's website which was instrumental in making the right buying decision for my family. I hope these posts prove helpful to somebody going through the selection and purchase process. I know this will be the first place I come when its time to purchase a vehicle again.

There was a lot of discussion about warranty pricing on this site about a month ago. However, you are correct; you can get the 7yr/100k/0 deductible warranty for $815 (dealer cost about $770, about 55% of Toyota's suggested retail price) thru a dealership on the East Coast. The dealer's name was mentioned here a few weeks ago. If you can't find the post I bet someone lurking on this board can do so for you.

If you decide to buy one of the other of Toyota's extended warranties, figure dealer cost at about 50% of Toyota's suggested price, and negotiate (hard) from there.

Although I seriously considered Autofair, and would have gotten the same deal a little cheaper (about $300 less), I ended up going with Darcars Toyota in Silver Spring, MD, since they were a 2.5 hour drive vs. a 6 hour drive from my home. I was very pleased with the dealership, they stuck to the price we had agreed on and didn't try to wheel and deal after the fact. I got a LTD FWD, with HF, WH, PC and CF for $34440, excluding taxes and tags. I know that some here have gotten better deals, but I'm fairly satisfied. The only thing I'm wondering now is if I overpaid for the extended warranty. I got a 6yr/100000/50 ded. warranty for $799. The lowest he would go for the 7yr/100000/50 warranty was $950. Should I have pushed for the 0 deductible warranty instead? Is it too late to cancel and get a warranty from the dealership listed elsewhere on this forum?

they pressured me on extended warranty...
final price they took me to was $973.00

my only interest is with 7/100/0

did i pass up on a good deal?

sounds like it should have come down around $800-$900? Where can i go to get one within that range?

sorry if i'm the late person on the block asking, but i'm just soooo excited about the new van! i haven't had a new car in the garage since 1996! It does make me feel like a kid again!

Thank's for all the assistance! (Pushin'!!:))

    Falls1,

I haven't taken possession of the car yet. Just received the VIN #. It is due between 3/5 - 3/12. Some miss info on dates and avalibility but in all only a week off. Will let you know when the car comes in.

Remember I wanted an XLE AWD, not many of them around. They were the only dealer willing to negotiate the price. Right now the Sienna is the hot car and other dealers are getting while the getting is good.

    Hope it helps.

Thanks for all the support and very knowedgeable toyota owners/drivers, this board became my life blood.

i'll definetely dive through all the threads regarding x-warranty info as i gear-up to do this transaction. hopefully won't take as long (:)) impact01 - i'll definetely take you up on your offer. you'll be hearing from me.

Davenow...it's at Midway Toyota in Pocomoke, MD. If you call, they will quote you a $1500 price for 7/70/0...I can't say names here but ask for a lady (in charge of finance) that sounds like Wanna...is that ok to post? Her price is $815.

bondguy1, did you purchase the platinum warranty? If so howmuch did you pay? Can you e-mail me the dealer info + contact? I have seen only 7/100/0 plans here. I think ther's another plan for 84/100/0. I am interested in this. Thanks
  • bondguy1bondguy1 Member Posts: 231
7 in 7/100/0 stands for 7 years (84 months). I didn't purchase it yet. I don't even get my van until tomorrow or the next day. It's being trucked down from Autofair to Florida. Call Midway Toyota in Pocomoke, MD (you can look it up under a Google search) and speak to finance manager. $815 for best plan.
  • wildredwildred Member Posts: 43
This is nice. I like happy endings.;) $145 is well worth all that good feeling and more.

It was $250 in my case. I originally only willing to pay $500 over the dealer's invoice. However, after realizing the $750 over is very reasonable for a Limited model with popular HO package plus also popular silver color, I took the offer. I want to enjoy the vehicle and life in general, so agonizing over $250 is out the door.

This dealership is very easy to make good deals with as long as you know (exactly) what you want. I went to San Francisco Toyota, they wanted $1,000 over the invoice for XLE, and no deals on the Limited. I went to Putnam Toyota in Burlingame, even though they have the most Siennas in stock (about 40), but after hearing my offer, they never bother to call me again. I contacted all of the dealers in the Bay Area (roughly 20) with my specific offer, most of them didn't respond, the rest won't budge.

My salesman contacted me today that my Sienna will be built on March 9, and will be arriving at the dealership within 14 days after that. So I am looking to pick up this beauty around March 23 or sooner. As if now, Toyota only released the last 8 digits of the VIN for my Sienna.

If anyone in the Bay Area like to get a good deal without a lot of haggling, e-mail me and I shall answer. Since Limited by definition is "limited", If you only wanted CE, LE, or XLE, I'm certain that you could get $500 over the dealer's invoice. Keep in mind though, the dealer's invoice will always be more than Edmunds' listing. Because there is TDA fee, and Gas fee added, about $400-$600 extra.

Now a question for the experienced owners on this board. Is there a predelivery check list that I can provide telling the dealer to preprogram the computer as it could not be easily programed by the owner afterwards, such as how long the lights stay on after the doors closed, or whether the doors will be automatically locked when engine starts?

    TIA!

when do you have to buy this warranty, within the first year, month what is the cut off point??
  • kevin_1051kevin_1051 Member Posts: 1
why the invoice prices are so different from different sites? For instance, invoice price of 2004 Toyota Sienna XLE Limited AWD at CarsDirect.com is $34,074, but at edmunds.com: $32,866.

    Thanks.

Just drove my 2004 Sienna LE home tonight, with #7 and floor mat package for $25000, including $540 dest. charge. The dealer said it's the first Sienna he sold below invoice.
  • scoobidubiscoobidubi Member Posts: 4
I did not pay a lot of attention to the details of the warranty because I don't buy them. I figure if I never buy an extended warranty on a dishwasher, microwave, computer, car, toaster, camera, video camera, etc. etc. over my lifetime I will save a lot of cash. So far this has proven to be true. Also, the extended warranty covers years 4-6 or 4-7. In my experience, if something fails, it usually goes early or late - I keep my cars for 10+ years.

What I do remember is it was only available that day with the purchase of the car, and it was 6 year or 100k miles. Not sure of the deductible but I am thinking it was $0. Cost was about $850, but after seeing some previous posts, it looks like you could do better with the unnamed east coast dealer for the 7/100/0. Good luck!

    Car is nice!

I'm also down here in South Florida (next city south)looking for a Sienna XLE limited.
I have played the negotiations game locally but have not been able to get anything for less than 1500 over invoice. So, I am also looking at Autofair. If you can break away from your new Sienna long enough, I would appreciate any information you could give me regarding your Autofair purchase. Thanks.
  • bondguy1bondguy1 Member Posts: 231
Well you did better than I did locally. I was only able to get $1800 off of MSRP...Maroone told me they would do $2500 over cost...nice guys, huh. I gave a deposit but then when I though about it, net of my trucking expense, I was saving 2200-2400 dollars. Better in my pocket. I can't email from the location I'm at but I will e-mail you later today and give you my salesmans name...you should probably talk to him since he's just been down that road with me. The van was a $37,753 list price. I also found out that they aren't making any more or if so very, very few with the HF package (#5). It comes w/ rear spoiler, DVD w/ headphones, 2 115V outlets,etc...Also, Artic Frost was extra cost and I got the Z1 package which isn't even offered as a complete package in FL. And best of all, they don't load their cars up with fluff like "TOYOGUARD" like they do in the south. I also got wheel locks and Z1 package comes with floor mats, door sill protectors, first aid kit, and cargo net. I wound up getting vehicle for $33,763 including the dealers $100 over. It cost $550 to truck down. They were great to deal with so far...car should be here today or tomorrow the latest. I can't wait. The only thing with ordering out of state is that you have to come up with lump sum of taxes when car is in FL. They also gave me a good rate on financing...3.19% for 60 months. Locally, I live less than 2 miles from Maroone Toyota. Hollywood seems to be a better dealer to deal with. Also, one other thing to consider re: DVD players. I've heard that you want to get the factory installed because it's not RF controlled...ie tuning in a radio station to hear audio on movies. For one thing, if you go on a trip, you will have to change the local station as signal fades and you also get static no matter how good the reception is. Hardwired is much better. As far as warranty, they were expensive. There's a dealer "Midway" Toyota in Pocomoke MD that has the 7year 100K mile warranty w/ 0 deductible for $815 (Platinum). You have to ask for finance manager to get that price.

We are looking to possibly buy a 2002 Sienna CE with power locks/windows/mirrors, am/fm/cd, and the standard stuff. 26K miles, Green/Tan colors.

The Honda dealership is asking $14,960 for the Sienna.

There is also a certified 1999 Sienna LE with 54K miles on it as well. Toyota dealer is asking $13,900. Black/Tan colors.

Or our final choice, a certified 2000 Honda Ody LX, 40K miles, CD player and roof rack are the only added options to this one. The Honda dealership (different from dealer mentioned above) is asking $15,400 but I'm hoping to get them down to $15K.

I looked at kbb.com and Edmunds.com and all three seem to be amazing prices. The dealers swear that with the new Sienna out and the Ody being an LX not an EX, they have to price them low to move them.

    Any advice?

    Thanks!

WOW.That's all I can say! Got the van today. The Arctic Frost looks awesome when it's cleaned up. Car only had 4 miles on it...took it to get washed...had two different people ask me about it at the carwash...I kept thinking "it's a toyota...and a it's a van...it's not like it's a new Lexus or something...although it's pretty damn close to that feeling when your driving it. One thing that is a little annoying compared to my 2001 Chrysler van is that with the Toyota, you have to unlock all the doors before you can do the back liftgate or side electric doors. Does anybody know if this can be programmed to open these three doors by pushing the buttons only?

Not many people seem to be buying 2004 Sienna CEs. Any reason why? I am looking for a 2004 CE - any pricing or other info welcomed from you all.

Also, what is TDA (pardon my ignorance)

    Thx
  • garnerjgarnerj Member Posts: 31
TDA = Toyota Dealer Advertising Its a fee Toyota supposedly charges to the dealers to cover the cost of all the wonderful sienna ads you see on tv and in print... In turn the dealers pass that charge onto you… If you negotiate on the Out the Door Price all this is invisible… However if you insist on seeing the dealers invoice for a vehicle… I’m sure you will see a line for TDA.

I think the reasons many people opt for the LE instead of the CE, if you look at the price few a few $$$ more you get cruse control, tinted glass, illuminated visor mirrors, heated outside mirrors, rear bumper protector (what ever this is), steering wheel audio controls, engine immobilizer, Roof rack, powered read quarter windows, rear ac and so on… Then if you add on any package you get the homelink computer, power right hand door and more… This all starts at only $1400 more (base CE MSRP to base LE MSRP).
In the end the LE will resale for more then CE models... Good luck... yuo cant go wrong with any model.. We LOVE our LE.. We were ever more glad we ended up with a higher package BJ vs AM...
Yes its more money... But over 5 years its only a few $$$ more a month...
  • owner2bowner2b Member Posts: 11
Appreciate your time and advice. Will look into a basic LE. I was actually going for a CE plus an Option pkg that has some of the stuff you mentioned in an LE, so I will do an apples to apples comparison to make sure what has the best deal and availability.
Edmunds says to expect (their TMV or True Market Value price) to pay the MSRP for the CE! How can that be?
  • garnerjgarnerj Member Posts: 31
Right now Edmunds says MSRP or close to that for all models...

My Advise would be to email as many dealers in your area ask them for their best Out the Door price. You will quickly find out who insists on charging MSRP and who is willing to deal....

It’s also funny I also emailed, later after purchase, some of the same dealers and the ones quoting MSRP also want to charge $55 for an oil change… Seems like others charge $29…
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Owner2b, TMV is what the average buyer is paying for a Sienna in your area. Some pay more, some less.

Thx guys. Appreciate the tips/info/advice. Now looking into an basic LE with the airbags option pkg. Garnerj - nice correlation with oil change prices - you may have hit upon an easy "indicator" of "willingness/ability to negotiate" - worth pursuing for all owner2bs

As far as I know, you have to first unlock the doors before you can activate opening of the sliding doors and/or rear hatch. However Dave you can reprogram the onboard ECU so that you open sliders/rear hatch by pressing ONCE the unlock button on the remote, instead of double-pressing it. BTW, we have an 04 XLE FWD.

Maybe pressing button twice is an OK thing. That way, if you are in a garage or tight space, remote doesn't accidentally open by getting pushed in a pocket or purse and open the rear hatch and bang it up. I have only had this van since yesterday afternoon but it is such an amazing vehicle. The sunroof is huge and I would recommend getting the factory DVD. I saw a few doen here that were "port" installed by dealers and they hang down real far...even though they are the same 7" screen. The factory one looks very flat to the roof. I also got it through package #5 (HF) which has (2) 115V outlets. These are so cool...I didn't realize until I got it they are just like the plugs in the house...WAY COOL. Does anyone know if the jacks on the left side by the 3rd row seats (looks like audio input jacks...maybe two audio and one video) are linked up to the DVD screen? Are they video/audio? I keep looking around from my drivers seat and it seems like Toyota tried to use every last bit of available space to put a door or compartment to hold something. I just let a guy at work drive it...he just got an Odyssey about 6-7 months ago...Needless to say, you can't compare the two. His face told me that. Get this van...you will absolutely love everything about it. By the way, in a previous post, somebody asked about brand of tires. I think it depends on which trim level you select. Mine has 17" wheels and the tires are Bridgestone Turanza's.

I'd go for the 2002 CE with lowest miles. I'd pay someone you trust to do some window tinting if not done. If you want more room and flat back seats, you can't beat the 2000 Ody for $15K.-- 2 excellent vehicles though. Good luck. P.S.- I have a 2000 Sienna LE- great van but pretty small for my 6'3" frame- my wife loves the van though!
