Mr. Davis (not really sure about your suffix number), we need to hear from you.
It's been almost another month (ok maybe just 2-3 weeks) and I'm still interested in hearing about your horrible dealer, who at last count had your car for about 65 days and no repairs......

    Whasssssss happppppppeeennnnnnniiiinnnnggggg??????

long time, no pulling up comments

Philly, you're right, I am not a saint! I'll sell you a DTS at invoice with 1% markup on the rate if you like though. Drop ship it right to your local dealer. That would frost him good.

Barry, rear glass has to be replaced. I have heard of these problems on the Catera (terrible reception in the sunlight, night time or cloudy day is fine), but not on the Deville. Warranty item all the way. Expect repair to take about a week for parts to come in.

Craig, 01 STS is unbelievably better than the 00. Good choice. as far as HP loss, I don't buy it. Take it from someone who drives, and I mean DRIVES, these cars. The 01 is faster, regardless of model. I don't know about the low emission info, but the seat of my pants tells me different.

JLL, S&S package discount was only in effect during the month of October. As far as whether it was available in CA, I have no idea. Your local dealer should tell you.

On October 12 I sent a Certified Letter, return receipt requested, to Cadillac Customer Service Center, as well as to the owner of the dealership. Cadillac forwarded their copy of the letter to the dealership owner. I finally got some activity on the car, and I was able to drive it out of the shop on Friday, October 27. The dealer had had the car for 79 days. When I saw their bill to the insurance company, there was about three days of labor( 25 hours). There was some minor touch-up of the paint needed near the antenna, and the back glass around the antenna was discolored. I took the car to a Buick dealership last week to have the paint touched up and the glass replaced. I was amazed that I actually received a call from Cadillac Customer Assistance last week to follow up on the status of the repair. The Cadillac dealer told me on the day that I picked up the car that they have about another 15 minutes of work to install a module in the navigation system, and they were waiting on the part. I will take the car back to them in the next few days to have that work completed. Otherwise, the car is in perfect condition, and is a pleasure to drive. Thank you for your interest.

Were the dealership indicated any apologies for having your car that long at the service?

If you don't mind, how much was the bill to the insurance for 3 days of labor (25 hours of labor)?
  • davis25davis25 Member Posts: 13
There was no apology- just excuses.

The labor charge was $1,778., which included items such as 100 miles of test driving and changing the coolant. Don't ask me the connection between lightning striking the antenna and changing the coolant. The car was almost new. I took delivery on March 18. I suppose that since the service department knew how to change coolant, they figured it was another item they could bill to the insurance company.

The fact that the website article has more/different photos than the actual magazine is good. They showed a rear-end view, which the magazine did not. Except for the front grille, I like the body work. I guess what I don't particularly like about the grill is the way it extends all the way across to the headlights. Too big IMO.

Otherwise, cool car, and I hope a vision of some production models to come...
  • philly7philly7 Member Posts: 94
I spoke to Jeff Bietzel at Wheel-to-Wheel and asked about the work. It turns out the the Tim Allen part of the deal is limited to the body work. This is fine by me as I am not interested in having his logo all over my car.

I don't like the grill work at all and since my car is coming with night vision, it would look even worse.

I can buy the same Koenig Tantrum Wheels (chromed), mounted on 18" GoodYear F1 Sport tires used on the Tim Allen car. Tire Rack will ship them to my door mounted and balanced for under $1500.

I don't see myself spending $10 grand on this car just to get another 100 HP. Especially since I would have to buy it at the end of the lease. (See Tccad jumping up and down right about now screaming "Stupid *&#&@ Idiot, haven't you heard a word I said!?!?!")

Anyway, I am looking for a revised intake system which is less restrictive and thus result in increased HP. I have tried K&N, but no luck yet.

BTW- GM uses two methods for Tire Pressure Monitoring. One has sensors mounted in each wheel and will tell you the tire that is low. The other uses the ABS sensors to detect differences in wheel travel (low pressure, smaller tire, faster RPM) and is not specific.
Does anyone know which method is used in the Deville? Tccad?
  • bolivarbolivar Member Posts: 2,316
In my humble opinion, if you are now driving the car after 25 hours of labor, and the damage was mostly restricted to discolored window and minor paint damage I do NOT think your car was struck by lightning.

I think something electrical shorted out and arced through the antenna.

A lightning bolt, with millions of volts and amps, would have done much more damage.

But, it looks like things are getting better for you.

(Hey, just remembering, my Concours is going into its 3rd day at the Caddy shop. Just to get the interior lights to turn off......)

Dealer has agreed to replace my rear window. They 1st said they would try to repair the grid, but I told them I take the car to the car wash every week, and how long did they think the painted on grid patch would last...and they agreed to order a new glass. I filled out the "your part is in..." post card today... Now all I have to hope for it that the glass guy they use follows proper technique so it doesn't pop out in a rollover...

philly7, I too,am very interest in an improved Air Take System. I have contacted K/H and asked if the 1999 Seville filter which has the same CAD serial number as my 2001 DeVille. I asked if it could be used...they said even tho the serial numbers and filters are the same, there was a problem with the 2001 filter housing and that WOULD NOT form a tight seal using their filter. K/H said they are working on this problem. If you find an improved Air intake system , pleas let us all know! More AIR equals more HP and better preformance...right? TAMCO
  • philly7philly7 Member Posts: 94
I believe you mean K&N, not K&H (although I could be wrong).

We must have talked to the same engineer because I got the exact same story. He told me that the plastic compound used in the 200/01 Northstar air box was to rigid and did not pass their Q/A tests. Basically, their filter frame is resin based rather than foam rubber used on regular disposable air filters. The K&N Filter did not seal well against the walls of the air box, allowing particulate to pass through into the intake system.

I asked them if they plan to produce and market a whole new air box/filter system for the Northstar, but he wasn't sure.

I would surely spend good money to upgrade the air intake system in this car. I think it would be a reasonably cheap way to get 25 to 30 more horse out of that motor!

I let you know if I hear anything.

I went over to my local Cadillac dealer to check on the availability and price of the 2.0 CDs for my Navigation system..

The area 1 CD is $135. Yep you read that correctly! Seems a little steep to me!

The entire kit of nine CDs is over $1000.

Part number for entire kit is 25725886, the region 1 CD is 25725887.

I asked if I could borrow the Region 1 CD from a 2001 to insure that it would work before I spent the big bucks and it seems to.

Question: How can I get the new "software" for the system? The 2001 models have an "Estimated Travel Time" feature that I'd love to have! I assume that it's also just some kind of CD update, but the dealer did not know.

  • barry45rpmbarry45rpm Member Posts: 98
The software you require is most probably on an Eprom (chip) inside the radio. You see, to compute time left the radio must know distance to go, speed, time of departure or time destination was chosen. All that info is readilly available in and around the caR (not the CD), so the radio must know to look for it & crunch the numbers. The chip has to be a replaceable chip, but that would mean that the radio has to come out & go to a service center. If its a soldered onto the board chip, the radio must be swapped. call www.radiosand more.com they sell factory stuff for less than the dealers.

OK - I saw the invoice for my DTS which was shipped from the factory on Monday. Under the line item for the Nav. System in the options section it said:

**INCLUDES A LIMITED RELEASE 9 DISK CD-ROM SPECIAL VALUE PACKAGE AND CARRYING CASE**

Does anyone know what the heck this means??? Carry what??? Where??? Why???

    Tccad?!?!?!?!?
  • davis25davis25 Member Posts: 13
In answer to posting #278, I keep carry case with disks in my glove compartment when I am traveling. The carry case is compact and protects the disks from damage. If I were to take my car in for service, I would remove the carry case and take it with me, because if the disks are stolen, the replacement cost is over $1,000.
  • philly7philly7 Member Posts: 94
Does that mean that the unit only holds 1 CD-ROM at a time thus making it necessary to change them when traveling from region to region? Then it makes sense to have a case for the remaining 8.

Am I on the right track??

Has anyone had a problem with either radio reception or GPS Navigation who has tinted windows?
I have read in the FAQ section on the Cadillac site that they recommend against tinting the windows if you have GPS as the antenna is under the rear parcel shelf.
Furthermore, I have heard of people complaining about radio reception (especially AM) after tinting their windows.

Can anyone provide some further insight here??

Tccad! Where the heck are you, man?!?!? I will send more email!
  • davis25davis25 Member Posts: 13
You must change the disks when you go from region to region. Each region disk overlaps the adjoining region by 100 or so miles, so you have plenty of time to change the disk when you go into a different region. The disk reader on my 2000 DTS is in the trunk, so there is some inconvenience in inclement weather. I have found that all major cities are well mapped on the disks. They are invaluable in directing me to the front door of hotels or residence addresses, through dash displays or voice prompts. Smaller cities and towns are not mapped or are sparcely mapped.

I have Bad to no reception on FM whenever and only when I turn on the rear defroster and the rear window is wet or foggy. It is always good on AM. I have spoken to Delphi electronic (manufacturers of the Diversity antenna system)and have shown the e mail I have gotten from them to my dealer, and as a result they have ordered a new rear glass for my 2000 Deville. I do have some miniscule almost impossible to see breaks in the brown hot wires, and one wire that dosen't get hot at all. The rear defroster is weak at the lower 1/3 of the glass too. If you need an amazing explanation of how the antenna system works I will cut and paste it to this forum.
  • barry45rpmbarry45rpm Member Posts: 98
Here is some information from our service engineer regarding your question.

Most diversity systems have two FM antennas and the radio will choose the
stronger of the two FM signals. This is a popular method in non-GM vehicles.
The 2001 Cadillac with the diversity antenna is a unique system. The signals
from the front and rear antenna are phased together to create a stronger signal
than either antenna could produce on their own. The phasing is a continual
process that occurs many times a second. The advantage is FM multipath is
greatly reduced and the FM signal performance is superior to the single element
    glass antennas and mast .

Your statement about the mast antenna may still be valid for single element
glass antennas, but the performance level of the Cadillac ARS (Active Reception
System) is superior in the reduction of multipath. Multipath is the same radio
signal hitting the antenna at two different times which knocks the signal out of
phase and causes undesirable noise in the FM. Typically, when the radio detects
the multipath it will change to mono to cut down on the interference. The ARS
(diversity) eliminates most of the multipath and allows the radio to continually
play in stereo under signal conditions that a mast system would require the
radio to play in mono. The result is a better sounding FM listening experience
under a wider range of FM signal conditions.

The AM reception does not use any of the above. It simply uses the rear element
as an AM antenna and operates the same as a single element system.

    Best regards,

    XXXX

I found out today that there are two types of metallic coatings used on premium window tint. The coating is what keeps the dye in the tint from fading and turning bright purple (not very dignified on any Cadillac.)

Most premium tints use an aluminum coating in sheet form. This is the type of tint which disrupts the normal operation of the antenna for both radio and GPS.

There is another type of tint which holds up fine to the sun, but does not block either radio or GPS signals as it uses metal particles which are bonded to the tint itself.

Now, I got this information today, but I'd like to confirm it. Barry, do you think the guys over at Delphi would be able to help me out with this?

How did you get in touch with them??

    Thanks-
  • etharmonetharmon Member Posts: 399
I've always been curious about those integrated antennas. It seems that most are going to those, but I have heard of isolated cases of the rear defogger causing interference. Personally, I think they should have stuck with the external mast diversity antennas.
  • barry45rpmbarry45rpm Member Posts: 98
My bad reception is caused by minute breaks in the defroster grid, which is causing interferance when the antenna picks up these stray electrical emissions from the grid. That's why GM is replacing my back glass under warranty. I got the explanation from Delphi via e-mail & showed it to the dealer service dept mgr. Try Delphi at: http://www.delphiauto.com/index.cfm?location=381
if that doesn't work just to to www.delphiauto.com and search the site for "diversity antenna".

how much should i expect to pay for a 3yr lease on a dts w/ navg? thanks
  • anonymousanonymous Member Posts: 314
The short answer is between $750 & $850 per/mo depending on your state taxes and licensing fees.

I am taking delivery on a fully loaded '01 DTS in January. When all is said and done, I should be getting it $500 back of invoice with 1/2 point markup on the buy rate. That translates int a monthly payment (including taxes) around $825/mo.

    Good Luck

What is the correct tire inflation pressure on my 2000 DeVille? The sticker on the door is remarkably empty, and lists only the tire size that the car was shipped with. Why does it NOT mention any tire pressures?

I have a 2001 DHS and the owners manual says to
change oil when you get a message on the driver
information system telling you to do so. I have
4000 miles on the care and the system says I have
60% oil life left. At this rate I wouldn't have
to change oil till about 9000 miles. This seems
a bit much to me. Does anyone agree?
By the way, I am down one quart of oil but
I infer from previous posts that this is normal.
    Is this right?
This is a fine car. I was a little disapointed
that the power steering pump sprang a leek but it
    was fixed satisfactorily under warranty.

My base 2000 is the same way. I've started changing it every 5,000 miles even though it shows over 50% oil life left.
At about 13,000 miles the, "Check Oil Level" light started coming on every time I started the car -- even after I changed the oil and checked the dip stick. The dealer replaced the sensor but that didn't affect the Change Oil interval like I hoped it would.
I've never been a quart low. Maybe the DHS engine is different enough to produce that result.

I guess that people don't want to get domestic cars with electrical problems but they rather get a car that have rattles in dash, doors, or moonroofs.

Wow, krv03 made an intelligent choice.

If I bought an STS with electrical problems and the dealership fixed them, I would make an intelligent choice too.
  • sweetjeldoradosweetjeldorado Member Posts: 94
Hope you had a great driving experience with your Deville but I am curious because I remember your complaint about some rattling in the dash on your Deville. Is it still there or it is pretty much gone because I recall that you were going to get rid of it is the reason why I ask? Thanks.
  • wowserwowser Member Posts: 11
Nope. Still rattles. Along with a seat squeak that's been worked on twice. If I remember the post, yea many months ago, somebody was offering big bucks for a 2000 and I said if I could get what I paid for mine, I'd dump it in a heartbeat.
I still would. (Heck, I'd even give them a hefty discount now). It is an okay car, but nothing that I'm particularly "Wowed" over.

Reading through the Deville responses, I find a lot of problems. When I read the Lexus LS430 responses, I find elated, joyful drivers who are thrilled with their Lexus and can't wait to buy another one.

    Any thoughts?

krv03 - I appreciate the detailed analysis. 10 months to make a decision? I think that is a little over the top. Regardless, I'm putting in the research time (maybe a month or two) and I too am concerned about rear wheel drive. The LS430 is rear and the DTS is front. Do you think the chances of getting stuck is greater with Lexus' rear wheel drive?
  • philly7philly7 Member Posts: 94
I am sure that if you actually read the posts that complain about, well, all the same stuff you read here, you will see that there are good and bad experiences with every manufacturer.

I think it is really simple. Either you want a domestic car (or a "North American Built car" as Krv03 would say) or not. If not, please, go German, Japanese, Korean...whatever.

But please, until you have actually experienced OWNERSHIP of a Cadillac in this decade try NOT to comment on experiences you haven't had!

I do not go to the Acura (HONDA!) conference and talk about how it feels to own an expensive HONDA!

Nor do I go to the BMW site and talk about how "ME TOO" my 5 series is.

    GET A GRIP, PEOPLE!
  • sweetjeldoradosweetjeldorado Member Posts: 94
I do emphasize with you about your problems with the car. People do get tired very quickly with a certain problem on the car and getting a particular thing fixed over again. Bad enough people have to sacrifice their time, money and take the car to the dealership and get those problems remedied as much if they can fix them. Also too what make you sicker is other people with the same car don't have any problems and some do that really p*ssed you off.

Are you planning on getting another luxury make or get another Cadillac?
  • wowserwowser Member Posts: 11
Early production units of new models from every manufacturer have a few bugs until they get a bunch of them on the road to get real-world feedback, (can you say Microsoft?). I wasn't surprised, just disappointed when it seemed so obvious that those hard plastic bits clipped together were bound to rattle. But, evidently they don't on others, so maybe Cadillac switched to a slightly softer plastic or I drive rougher roads than most people.

Sure, I'll buy another Cadillac. I've owned five of them and haven't bought anything but GM since a 1958 Fordog. I figure a 2003 Escalade outta be about right -- if gasoline isn't $3.00 a gallon in the U.S. by then.

I've been reading your posts recently and am a bit dissapointed that most the posts have been about '00 & '01 models only. As the past owner of a late model DeVille('78) and the new owner of another late model DeVille('90), I was hoping there would be some info here for me to dig into regarding late model Cadillacs. If any of you happen to have any insightful information about a '90 Deville you may have owned, please share! Thanks.

I don't think you've read all the posts here. Sure there have been some negative posts, but it seems more 2000 and 2001 Deville owners are very delighted with their cars and have said many good things about them.

Third time this has happened. (plus once while in dealer's service dept.) Battery goes dead after car sits for 7 days. Dealer can't find problem and doesn't want to "throw Parts" at it. Drawdown on fully charged battery is 9.5 amps, which daleer said is normal. I've gone through three new batteries. Anyone else with this problem? Any thoughts?
  • bolivarbolivar Member Posts: 2,316
Battery draws over 9 amps with key off!!!!
    Wow!
    That's a lot of power.
    9.5amp x 12volts = 114watts. Lots of power.
If your battery is 750amp-hours / 9.5amps = 79hours. 79hours/24hours/day = 3.3days to where it will not start the car.

You got something very wrong. And a dealer BSing you heavy-duty about this being normal.

Dealer replaced the am/fm/cassette/cd radio in my 95 Concours to cure it's ability to kill the battery in a few days of not being driven. Strange thing to be drawing a lot of power, but that fixed the problem.

Tell them to fix it or set a schedule to bring out a new battery every 2 days for you.

This is just a rough idea, from experiences with a 1984 Buick Riviera and 90 Olds Trofeo, which had many Cadillac type parts. I had drains from load-leveler shocks that kept running and from a mercury switch for turning on the trunk light.

The Riv was fixed by a Car Electric place after the dealer could not find it. Just some ideas for you.
  • etharmonetharmon Member Posts: 399
How did you like your Trofeo? My previous car was an 89 Toronado and I liked that car alot. I did have alot of Cadillac features. Never had the battery drain problem though.

I am heading towards my fourth battery in a 97 DeVille. Do yourself a favor and get a battery with the posts on the top. The side post AC Delco battery is a problem. I am told that the heat in the engine compartment accelerates the corrosion.
