At sixteen I was luck enough to be given $1000. I chose to get a guitar and a stereo system because music has always been more important to me than cars. If I had the choice between going to a good school or a new car at that time I know I would have gone for the car. I was very disenchanted (bored out of my mind) with school at the time and was ignorant enough to think that all schools were the same. I worked very hard to earn the money for every car that I have ever had, and I wouldn't change a thing. I have a 2 year old son now and no matter how well I am doing when he is ready to drive he will be earning a car. I may help him out but it will definitly not be a new car. Call me selfish but the cars I am buying in the future will be mine or my wifes. I am dreaming about a GLI coupe...

Anyone found out how fast the 2003 Jetta VR6 can do Zero to 60? I can't find this information anywhere.
    Thanks.
  • chmeeeechmeeee Member Posts: 327
SNTX: I definitely do not think those qualify as boy-racer/ricer type mods. Those type of mods are the ones that you look at and kind of cringe. I am willing to bet that 99% of people would not even notice your mods as mods, but rather just notice that your Jetta looks nice.

blueguy: When I was choosing a college, I was offered the choice of UMASS and a 3 year-old Impala SS (my favorite car at the time) or a private school of my choice, and I chose the private school (Worcester Polytechnic Institute). I am defintely glad, and my taste in cars has changed quite dramatically anyways!

I need to find out about getting some aftermarket brake pads. The car has 23.2K on it now, and I wanna replace the rear pads before they end up going anyway (expected life is usually 30K, from what I have heard). I would appreciate it if someone could post a web address and/or a brand name of pads they recommend. Thanks.

Boy racer would be the coffee can exhaust, big spoiler, etc. The mods that SNTX did to his car (like mine) are very subtle, just like chmeeee said.

    Hey, easy on UMass...
  • chmeeeechmeeee Member Posts: 327
Hey, not busting on UMASS, I have a bunch of friends there, its just not what I wanted (school = bigger than my town). I am actually going out to Amherst on Friday for the weekend!

Have a slice at Antonio's for me!

We usually do, I cant resist that pizza whenever we walk past, it makes a good snack coming out of Amherst Brewing Company :-D

Go on a test drive, and bring a stopwatch. Then let us know.

That is where I used to thumb home from. (Route 9 from Amherst to Worcester).

Antonio's? Amherst Brewing? I guess I haven't been back there in a while.

Oh, and shiny trim and funny, odd lights definitely add to the boy racer type theme as far as I can tell.

    0-60

    Mid 7's with a 5-speed manual
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
those add ons are definitely a "look" these days. i mean, the Max and the IS300 come stock with those funny tail lights. not sure if that will become a passing fad, or if it the wave of the future though....
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
The "shiny stuff" you are referring to is on the doorsill and not visible unless the door is open.
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
Mid 7s for the VR6 model? Are those VW numbers? A Jetta 1.8T does it in 7.2...then again the Jetta is lighter with the 1.8T.

Nov 01 comparison in Car & Driver.

Though the numbers don't reflect the 24 Valver
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I know at least one person who has the 24V V6, but don't know what the 0-60 time is. I am sure it would be something like 6.5-6.7 though with stick.
  • sntxsntx Member Posts: 33
Thanks for the support chmeeee and vocus.

"Oh, and shiny trim and funny, odd lights definitely add to the boy racer type theme as far as I can tell"

IMO clear reflectors on the front bumper lights do not look odd at all. Personally I thought the amber lights look "funnier". Oh well to each his own.

0-60 is sometimes silly to me. i mean, a Miata only has 140 hp, and yet is "fast" compared to most cars.

so much is made of 0-60, yet most normal people can't drive a manual transmission car well enough to ever hope to get the factory times. it also depends on altitude, gas, mileage, temperature, etc.

i would say that the 24V Jetta is fast enough, and leave it at that. :)

BLUE GUY - did you see the review for the G Coupe? i am driving one ASAP. it looks soooo good on the outside, maybe the inside won't seem so vulgar this time around. and the price? how do they keep it so low? 280hp. stability control. a backseat that isn't any smaller than my SEDAN. how can one go wrong? what is the catch with that G coupe? just in interior materials and design? i wonder what we will find out...bad tranny? oil leaks? or will it end up being the next "Legend Coupe"...the car that did EVERYTHING well. like magic...

    hmmmmm
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Haven't you owned enough cars already? :)
  • 8u6hfd8u6hfd Member Posts: 1,391
    A miata doesn't weight 3000 lbs either.
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
NEVER! i am not making decisions until the spring...so i have time to come to my senses...haha.

Justin, I've been following the G35 coupe religiously for months. It looks quite impressive and yes in a way it does remind me of the old Acura Legend coupe's simple style and functionality. i still love the first gen Legend coupes, 10+ years after their introduction. In fact a good friend owns one and it's still a rock solid car for her.

I'd guess with the record Infiniti has (and their speed fixing vexing issues) the coupe will have minor problems at first but by mid-year be fully functioning and nigh perfect.

The G35 sedan came out and had a few issues which reportedly Infiniti addressed with the 2003.5 sedans (new interior touches, new trunk, new ac, etc). If the coupe has problems, I'd bet by March/April of 2003, they'll be a thing of the past.

BTW, my friend's G35 sedan doesn't feel quite as nice as my Jetta but it's not exactly CTS-bad. It's just not uber-audi luxurious. More business-like.

I have a 00 Jetta VR6. I have had it in about 4 times for the Check Engine Light with the message Emission Workshop displayed on the dash as well. The first two times due to I think code 1126. There was a broken air intake hose or something that was replaced. The third time was a secondary house off that hose that was replaced that blew off its’ clamp. It is back in today with the same CEL/Emissions Workshop but today the code was 1137 and I need a new fuel regulator b/c mine is 10PSI over the norm. I have less than 30K miles on this car. Is anyone else having or have they had these same problems?
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
How did I know you, of all people, would have a comment on that one? :)
  • bpeeblesbpeebles Member Posts: 4,085
It gets worse than that... A recent 'study' found that most automatic xmissions stay in second gear til just after 60MPH (under full throttle)

The conclusion was that auto manufacturers are 'tweaking' the auto trannys to make the 0 -to- 60 times look good. (perhaps at the expense of other, desirable traits)

This is because many folks 'look at the numbers' and use this for comparison shopping. (0to60, HP... etc)

Most knowledgeable, educated people know better than to compare raw numbers because they do not tell the whole story. That is why we own VWs ;-)

For example... the 1.9L TDI engine is rated at 90HP... but actually driving one does not allude to this raw number. Many street-ricers get surprised when a 'chipped' TDI engine can out-accellerate their Hondas with $5,000 of add-ons under the hood.

The Honda S2000 has a relitivly high raw HP rating for the engine-size.... but this engine is the highest-revving engine on the market today.... Not very usable horsepower!

BTW... Have you seen the 2003 Jetta with V6 and tiptronic tranny is rated for the SAME MPG as the 2.0L standard tranny?

I had my friend test drive this top of the line Jetta and in manual shift did 0 to 60 in 6.2 seconds. In automatic it does 7.2 seconds. This car has some muscle. He also drives a 1998 Corvette which does 0 to 60 in 4.2 seconds. He liked the "Bells and Whistles" on my car.
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
I am guessing his Corvette is HIGHLY tuned....0-60 in 4.2 sec is very fast unless it's a Z06 and they s=didn't make that model in '98.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
It's no surprise that Honda engines are high-revving though. You have to rev them into the stratusphere before they produce any power. I have handed several modded Civic drivers their stick shift in my stock AUTO 1.8T.

And if you get the chip in the 1.8T or TDI, it adds dramatic power. Everyone that I have talked to about that is surprised that one little chip can add 40hp and 80lb/ft of torque to an engine that's only 1.8 liters in size with 180hp in the first place.

Canzman, my 01 VR6 hasn't had any of those issues. The ERC light came on once and I checked the gas cap, tightened it, and the light went out. I dropped my car off this morning though for 15,000 oil change, dash rattles and a squeak in the front shocks. The tech told me that he "can't promise me that they'll be able to do anything about the dash rattles"... What kind of BS is that? If it's still the same shakey mess when I get it back, I guess I'll start writing to VW of A? Any suggestions? This is the 4th time having the dash worked on. The squeak up front might be from a leak or puncture in the gas shocks... stay tuned. They're supposed to call me back this afternoon. Any guesses if they'll try and charge for the shocks? Both of them are shot, I'm saying that's a warranty issue (15K miles).
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
It took them 10 times to finally get the dash rattle out of my car. I wrote to VWoA, left my car at the dealer for 5 weeks once (something they had to order), and was also working with 3 different reps.

They should not charge for the shocks if the car has only 15K miles on it.

called me today and apologized for what happened, and told me he fired the guy. i know he hated making that phone call. i know it wasn't HIS fault, so i didn't chew him out. i like having a "contact" that i deal with. don't like dealing with people that can't/won't make any decisions in my favor...haha.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
First of all, you are beginning to sound like me. :) Just kidding.

Secondly, what happend that the guy got fired? Did I miss something?
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
why do you say i sound like you? someone else said that. i don't get what you mean when you say that.

one of the "car-bringer-arounders" stole change from my ashtray. so tacky and unprofessional. i had a fit about it, and was THIS close to filing a police report, just to bug them. it didn't come to that. i will be getting a severe discount on my 20k service :)
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I was saying you sound like me, getting people fired and stuff. :)

I don't blame you though. I don't care how small something is that they took, they took it and it was not theirs. That's messed up and totally unprofessional.

I have posted in the past and after reading some of the more recent posts I would like to offer/receive some input on some issues. I own a 2000 Jetta VR6 5-Speed.

I have had problems with my car since day 1. I reported a majority of the problems to VW and had many issues resovled under warranty. When I was at 18,900 miles I was having problems with the car bucking and stuttering on cold or damp mornings. When it did this the engine light would
flash then go off. I reported the problem to VW of America and had it inspecting during the subsequent oil change, to my surprise I was told there was NOTHING wrong. The problem has persisted since then, I now have 37,500 miles on my vehicle. I had the in for service because the problem was getting worse and the engine light was not turning off after the bucking.

Upon examination, I was told the car required a Ignition coil pack and an o2 sensor. My cost, about 800 bucks. I told the VW manager that i reported the problem to VW under warranty and he told me to take it up with VWoA. VWoA's response was basically that since the car failed at 37,500 miles instead of 18,900 when it was reported, there was nothing they would do. I have even been in touch with the Level 2 Rep(the rep above the ones you talk to one the phone when you call). The attitude that I got from VW was that basically they didnt care, and that they wouldn't stand behind their vehicle. I am considering taking other actions, does anyone have any info on these repairs or other actions to take? I think this is a bad customer relations move for them to take.

I was also misquoted from VWoA on the labor cost for the repair. The dealership overcharged me $100 bucks, when VWoA told me it would be $100 bucks less. I called the dealership and VWoA about this and both basically said tough, thanks for the money, VERY UNPROFESSIONAL!!!

If anyone has any advice, please feel free to contact me. Also, record everything, document everything, VW does everything in its power to make as much money as possible without thinking of the people they are affecting.

afryar - My car is a year older with twice as many miles so for you to say that you are not having the same problems is a bit like comparing apples to oranges. If I do not get the fuel pump regulator replaced it and continue driving the the PSI 10 lbs over I take a risk of blowing hoses and/or seals. This isn't the first problem I have had either. I got this car in October of last year I am the 2nd owner and I have already replaced the thermostat, coolant hoses, water pump, air intake hose, and now the fuel pump regulator. All this on a car with about 28,000 miles.

contact your state's Attorney General's office. They will help you with your complaint. Also think about contacting the local newspaper/TV consumer reporter. That may help as well.
  • hoodornamenthoodornament Member Posts: 114
This is a total DISGRACE, I love my Passat but reading stuff like this makes me want to barf. Knocking on wood 17k miles w/o a problem (except rip-off dealers)

    HO
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I know what you mean. I had gone through some drama in the beginning of my ownership experience with my Jetta. I really like the car alot, so I don't wanna get rid of it, and am not going to. I did think about it back then, I must say. Everything is fixed now though, so I am glad all the problems (all rattles actually) are fixed now.
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
Hey, my ashtray slider-cover-thingamabob broke. I've never closed it, until last night (I always recharge my phone in it) and it popped up. Argh. Not that this is a legit issue. And I'm under warranty, so it's more the annoyance of driving to a stealership to get it fixed. 4 hours in a waiting room while some guy puts on a new cover.
  • target3target3 Member Posts: 155
    Stealership!!! LOL!
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
Almost as good at 2.slow....boy I hate that expression!!

    Stealership is pretty funny though!
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
If you had a 1.8T, you wouldn't mind the expression "2.slow" so much.. :)
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
    I know...but unfortunately I do have a 2.slow...ummmmmm I mean 2.0.
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
don't worry. your car is still better than anyone elses out their for the price you paid for it. rest assured :) we all got the deal of the century!
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I wouldn't go that far. But it's clear that we all were happy with the Jetta. Otherwise, why would we have chosen it?
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
Have any of you seen the new Car and Driver Nov issue? They did a 10 car comparo of $16,000 economy cars and the VW Jetta was left out. I think it would of stacked up well, eventhough it would of had the smallest engine of the bunch in 2.0 form. You'll never guess what car came in 1 and 2?
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
    No cheating!!!
