The owners won't be laughing when/if they trade the cars. Checking and finding the fender bolts turned is going to make one think that the car has been in an accident. It will definitely lower the value of the car in the long run.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
When mine does that, it just kinda looks like part of one or two of the digits are missing.
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
look closely at the right hand side of the clock when it happens. you will see a little speck. that speck is the symbol. it looks like an antenna with "waves" coming out....
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I don't even notice it sometimes actually, unless I look over and happen to see it. I have seen it happen a couple times though, in my car.
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
    Is your clock always accurate?

Maybe it is communicating with an atomic clock somewhere and synching.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
The clock has not changed time in a year, since I had the car. It always seems to be on the same time.

You think it would be synching, and that's what would cause it to go "blank" for exactly one minute?

I think you misunderstand. This was not a stunt pulled by dealerships. The Harlequin Golf was a limited production model, made by VW. Kind of like the New Beetle with the "Vapor" paint you could only get from the website.

just got a call from my gf that her wolvie stalled out and had to be towed to the local vw dealership.... this is the 2nd time it has happened.. the first time was 6 months ago. is there a lemon law that applies to this? how does it work? after the 3rd time they try fixing it, they will replace it?

and vocus..and others.... they gave her a kia as a rental because they expect to keep the car for 10days or more...they said that she needs to pay in excess of the base of $30 for the rental if she wants anything else. we will see about this. how did you guys get something decent? did you talk to the service manager? vw of america?

    thanks, kyle

well..seems like the engine coil went out for the second time!!! greattttttttttttt
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
Tell her to ask for a Sorento, the new Kia SUV. It is supposed to be REALLY NICE.

Maybe she'll want to keep it!

I have an 02 jetta with an annoying squeak comming from the glove box area. If you press right below the glove box door, the squeak stops. Anyone else have this problem? If so, any solutions?
  • chmeeeechmeeee Member Posts: 327
I would think with so few harlequins made, the value should actually be quite high. Collectors would probably be willing to pay several thousand more than a regular Golf to own one of these!

Kyle: In most states, the Lemon Law requires you to have been to the dealership something like 6 times for the same problem before it goes into effect, but you probably want to check what the law is in your area.

Squeek: No idea, I would say bring it to the dealer.
  • kyleknickskyleknicks Member Posts: 433
lemon law = 6 times over what period of time? the life of the car?
  • ppowerppower Member Posts: 93
Benetton model. Remember the old Benetton ads, "The United Colors of Benetton".

    Ppower
  • chmeeeechmeeee Member Posts: 327
Usually a year or so. Basically, if you are in the shop almost as much as your are out of the shop, it may be considered a lemon.
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
Kyle: Your GF should be able to get a rental for less that $30 per day. It will be an econo box but you should be able to get it for less than $30. Also, dealers usually get a discount from rental agencies.
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
why does the g/f need a rental? a coil (happened to me too) can be replaced in 30 seconds. make them do it while you watch.
  • kyleknickskyleknicks Member Posts: 433
they said it's on backorder... there's 3 other jettas sitting there waiting for the same thing... im sure if they didn't have to give her a rental..they wouldnt..

the problem with the rental they gave her, it's a kia sephora? it's a tin can.. i dont feel safe with her driving it... especially if it's for 2 weeks... at least give her a grand am
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
You mean Kia Sephia!!! I agree it probably is a peice crud. Have you asked for something different?
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
I'm telling you, if you have a chance/choice, have her ask for the Kia Sorento SUV.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
First of all, your GF has to pay for the car? My car has been in the shop more than a handful of times, and I have NEVER paid for a rental. Not one time. And my car was in the shop for 5 WEEKS once. VW pays for a rental if you car's in the shop overnight, no limit. I have had Maximas before, I know. Call VWoA and make them pay for the loaner.

And the coils are one more thing to add to the list of common things that go wrong with VWs. Along with the window regulators and MAF sensors (on the old ones). It has happend to countless people that I know.

I am almost at 26K miles on my car already, and it's about a year old. Before the 50K warranty expires, this car will definitely be sold or gotten rid of. I will, no way, keep a car with such expensive parts after the warranty has expired. Especially since everyone seems to have troubles with their VWs the higher the mileage goes. I love the car and all, but I am not about to deal with it.
  • kyleknickskyleknicks Member Posts: 433
vocus.. no she doesn't have to pay for the rental..but they're willing to rent her a car up to $30. get it? thats why she has a Kia. if she wants to anything else like a 4x4, she'll have to pay the difference.... $50/day for a truck minus the $30 = $20 out of her pocket.

Vocus, what kind of cars did you rent when you had your car in for service? if you got better than econo boxes, how did you get VW to spring for it? thanks
  • 98jettavr698jettavr6 Member Posts: 47
Did she try Enterprise, b/c they typically have rates for situations like hers, where she can get a decent car for $25-30 per day.
  • chriswdtxchriswdtx Member Posts: 2
Read the owners manual and it says to use 5W40 Oil.

It goes on to say that if 5W40 is not availible OK to use 5W30.

I have not been able to find 5W40 in the Houston,Texas area

What is the downside of using 5W30?

Why doesn't Volkswagen put 5W30 in at the factory?
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
After all the crap I have been through with VW, they will pay for anything I want to rent. I did have to pay like $5 a day for the Maxima though when I had it. I thought it was worth it to me though. Most of the time, I end up getting a loaner from their fleet at the dealership.

Where did she get the rental car from? If there is a problem with the car, go back to that company, tell them the Kia is not satisfactory, and you want something else. The last time, they gave me an Escort overnight, which turned into 3 days (they thought). Once I found out I was not going to have my car right back, I went to the rental place, told them the Escort was not working for me (I am 6'3, so there was no room for me), and they gave me a Lancer.
  • kyleknickskyleknicks Member Posts: 433
well..it's crowley volkswagon in west hartford ct... and i guess they have this stupid agreement with some mom and pop rental place that's 15miles from the dealership.. the desk guy at the dealership said that they wont reimburse her if she goes and rent from somewhere else.. so it has to be from this cheap rental place. which i think is a bunch of crap.

If anyone from Central CT ... DO NOT GO TO CROWLEY VW for your service... at least do not talk to this guy name ANDY. he gave my gf a hard time.. promised her she'll get a car at 4pm.. never got it on time.. never called her back to tell her if they towed her car.. she basically started crying cause of the way she was treated. if this situation doesnt get resolved... i'll be sure to let everyone know in the VW forums not to go there for service..

Question... is the engine coil a very common thing that goes bad in the jetta?? she's very concerned with the long term reliabity of her car.. since her's is a 2001, with 2 yr warranty.. she's thinking bout getting an extended warranty.. now that i think about it... is the engine coil covered under the 10yr engine and powertrain warranty?

    thanks everyone.. i'll keep u posted..kyle

It seems some people have this issue with their cars, while others never seem to get the typical malfunctions.

Contact VW and ask if the coil is covered under the warranty. It may be. Dunno.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I don't know if the coils are under the powertrain warranty or not, but they seem to be a very common problem with the 1.8T engine. I haven't had it happen to me yet, thank God. I am sure it's only a matter of time though.

As far as the rental car, it seems that VW will pay for the cheapest rental they can get. So you are pretty much stuck with it, unless you go to the rental place itself and make them give you something else.

Are the Jettas from96-99 generally better than
the newer ones? I don't see where people are having as much trouble with them.

    Hi,
    I have a 95 Jetta III GL.
These days, when it is raining outside, the water will leak onto the carpet of the front passanger side.
I check it, found water just drip down from the below of passenger side dashboard.

Anyone has suggestion for the problem?

    Thanks!
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
That is entirely not true! Every VW has some kinda quirk. The 1993-99 models (MKIII) have electrical problems in addition to the problems with the MKIV cars (1999.5-present).
  • kyleknickskyleknicks Member Posts: 433
did you guys go on vac? sheesh
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
What happend with the rental? Did you send your gf back to ask for another car, or is hers done yet?
  • patpat Member Posts: 10,421
    have any suggestions for papa365 Nov 17, 2002 11:51am?

My first suspect is always plugged moonroof drains.
  • 8u6hfd8u6hfd Member Posts: 1,391
Check the firewall for leaks...especially during a rainy day
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
Try cleaning the leaves out of your windshield "gutter" (or whatever it is called) where the drain holes are. It is free and will help anyhow, if not with this particular problem.
  • tvmountaintvmountain Member Posts: 12
Just wondering what the symptoms of the electrical
problems are I am familiar with theVW quirks like
the door handles etc. But have not so far had trouble electrically. What should I be watching for?
Also does anyone have a solution for the brilliant
cup holder designs in these models. What actually
    fits in there?
  • papa365papa365 Member Posts: 2
    Thanks for all your responses

I check the car today, found there is something wrong with the windshield weatherstrip. I pour water through the windshield "gutter", water leak down to the floor mat. And strip did show some big creavices.

Then, can anyone suggest a good bodyshop or windshield installation shop around DC area?
Or, if i can buy the weatherstrip and DIY it?

    Thanks.

Is there something wrong with your cupholders?

I have been able to use mine to hold a variety of things, from cola cans to large soft drink cups from fast food joints. When taking a somewhat hard corner, I will brace the drink with my hand, just in case, but I have never had a drink fall or tip over while in the cupholder.
  • kyleknickskyleknicks Member Posts: 433
Vocus... VW told my gf that the coils are on backorder and should have some coming in... so we're just waiting... she bought it in for service last thurs and now it's monday..5days and counting.. seems like she's gonna keep the damn cheap kia Spectra.. until she gets her car back.. the rental place is 15 mins away..and she's on a busy school with med school... the only thing i like about the kia is the headlites on it.. they seem up to par with the HID's on the maximas.. they're certainly brighter than my 2000 maxima!

I sure hope the jetta gets the engine coils soon... like i've said.. this is the 2nd time it's happened on her 1.8t and we're worried bout long term issues... other than that.. she haven't had any problems at all... beautiful fit and finish.. and high resale value... she bought it for 19.5, i bet she could get 17K for it now, about 17 months later...

I got a Focus for a rental car (it's in the body shop)...the wiper stalk is sloppy.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
What happend to your car, and which one? (I think you have 2 TDIs, if I am right.) Sorry if I am not.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
The cup holders might be able to be replaced with the new ones in the MKIVs. I am not sure though.

Anakin: The cup holders from the older MKIVs and the older series VWs are not nearly as convenient as ours is. They were 2 small holes, and non adjustable like ours. They changed the design of them for 2001 or 02.
  • AnakinAnakin Member Posts: 410
Oh, right. I had forgotten that.
  • 8u6hfd8u6hfd Member Posts: 1,391
    1 TDI

    It got sandwiched.
  • tvmountaintvmountain Member Posts: 12
Yes vocus you are right indeed. They aren't good
what I'm looking for is the magic coffee cup that
fits. We don't have a VW dealership in our area
so retrofitting would be somewhat difficult and
there are not any Jettas newer than 91 in any
salvage yards here either. Does anyone know the
secret cup that fits and preferably has a lid?
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Is the cup holder in the dash, or the console? I know the 4th Gen has them in the dash, and you can replace the old design with the new design (02+). I am not sure about Gen3 cars though. You might check http://www.drivergear.vw.com for more info on accessories.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
A Golf or Jetta? I could have sworn you had 2, but I am losing it I guess. :)

How did the car hold up in the accident? And do you have any issues about driving a car after it's been in an accident, like some people do?
  • tvmountaintvmountain Member Posts: 12
Thank you they are in the console. I think I'm
stuck with them but I will check out your link
    in case.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I will save you the time. You pretty much are stuck with them. Sorry. :(

You can't change the shape of the console. They do sell a mug that might fit the holder though. You might be in luck yet. :)
