did the dealer explain WHY the second set of coils went bad? is this another window regulator issue? more about the design of the part than simply getting a "bad" part? i know my car is going to leave me stranded over the holidays in the mountains of VA where no one has ever seen a VW Jetta, let alone knows where a dealer is.

Where do they sell this mug? Is this a VW product
or can I get it at a box store.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
You should be able to find it in the store. Tell me, will the cupholders hold a soda can? If so, then get a mug with the same circumference and you're set! :) Good luck.

If you are going to be paraniod by the car, what's the use of keeping it?
  • 8u6hfd8u6hfd Member Posts: 1,391
    Golf TDI

No issues driving it whatsoever...except the missing headlight.
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
i hear ya, but what is my alternative? unless i traded and went el-cheapo, there is no other car out there that i could live with/be seen in for the same price.
  • hoodornamenthoodornament Member Posts: 114
Be seen in ? Whats up with that?
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I know what you mean. The Jetta is the best car for myself in this price range as well. I have had problems with the car when new (rattles), but I still cannot find anything I like as much as the Jetta. Since I will be keeping this car for awhile, that's not a problem right now.

    Dilemmas, dilemmas. :)
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
what is your question? clarify for me...thanks.
  • AnakinAnakin Member Posts: 410
The Jetta is the best car for around $22k that I could find as well... and I have had no trouble at all from mine. :D

This will be a good car for me until I can save up for a G35. Sat in one at the car show. Mmmmm yummy.
  • target3target3 Member Posts: 155
IMO is one ugly vehicle. Exterior is ugly, especially with the sloped rear end. Interior also ugly (and obviously Japanese designed).
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
A hint of Altima cheapness resides in that car, I think. I like the Jetta betta. :)
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
Have either of you naysayers ever driven a G35 sedan or even better the ultra-sexy G35 coupe?

I like my Jetta and in many ways do feel I have a more luxurious interior than a G, but when it comes to driving dynamics, the G obliterates every car I'd consider for under 35k.

Oh if only I didn't have a mortgage and school loans...sigh.
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
the interior materials used in the Jetta are better than those of the G. but, that will change next year, for sure. Infiniti has such potential - powerful, reliable cars. but that new M45 looks like a Kia Optima from the front. they will get on the ball i predict and upgrade the interior, just enough to not alienate the current buyers, but enough to make us shut up about it :) that M45 car will be gone in 2 years. it might as well be a XG350 by Hyundai.

the fact is the Infiniti has a fine interior. of course for $30k plus, it should and does. but we are so used to the VW/Audi interiors that we can't see that fact.

Anyone who owns or has owned a 91 VW Jetta please help! I need to know if this vehicle has space underneath the driver seat to place a Thomas Guide or any other items?

I'm interested in leasing a 2003 Jetta GLX. I live in Westchester/NY/CT area. Can anyone give me any info on what I can expect in terms of payments? I'm thinking 12K miles 36 months lease. Thanks

Anybody know which auto pricing sources are most accurate? For the following car...

2003 Jetta GLS Wagon in Baltic Green with:
    - Tiptronic auto transmission
    - Beige Leather Interior
    - Monsoon Sound
    - Electronic Stability Program (ESP)

I get a dealer invoice of $22,439 from Edmunds.com and Kelley Blue Book. But I get $22,806 from CarsDirect.com. Moreover, I've got some dealers who quote the lower figure, and some who quote the higher. This calculates to a 1.8% difference on the base price (before options). Could this a dealer group advertising fee, or something like that?

Has any one had the Volkswagen high performance muffler installed on their Jetta 1.8T, and what do you think of it? Supposed to improve performance by 5%, or something like that, and supposed to make it "sound" better (whatever that means). Just wondered if it's worth the ~$490 + installation cost (supposedly between $110 - $150 at the dealer). Thanks
  • chmeeeechmeeee Member Posts: 327
jcedano: You should go to the build your own section of the VW webpage, they have a lease calculator at the end.

greg: Baltic green was discontinued for the 2003 model year, unless its different for the wagons. Makes my car more rare! :-)
  • target3target3 Member Posts: 155
I have not driven one, nor do I care to drive one. If it is an ugly vehicle, it can be the best performer in the world, but I am not going to buy it. IMO it would be better to drive something that handles less, but does not look like crap.
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
I hope it is gold plated or something. Is yours gone already?

    Wow.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I agree somewhat. The front end looks pretty cool on the G35, but the back end has to go! And the sedan (to me) looks like a more expensive Altima. Definitely not for me.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
That color isn't available any more for 2003. One of my neighbors has a baltic green Jetta, and I just can't get used to the color. I don't know why, I just don't like it. It is very unique though, I have only seen a handful of them.

Around my area, we have white (mine), galatic blue, tornado red, the baltic green, 2 dark greens (can't remember the factory name of them), and (of course) silver. All of them are Jettas or Golfs, except the silver which is a NB.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
$600?!?!? NO WAY! That is way too much, and it's only that much because you are getting it from the dealership. Get a Techtonics muffler for about half the price and have it put on. Not only will it be cheaper, but it will increase the HP by about 5%. For more info, check out http://www.performance-cafe.com and click on "performance" at the top of the page when you get there.

    Good luck!

Justin, you had said about your clock in the dash going crazy sometimes, for exactly one minute. Does your odometer/trip odometer ever do the same thing? I was driving yesterday around 6pm, the night before last, and I noticed my odometer/trip odometer display garbled. It straightened up in exactly 1/10 of a mile. Weird. I know you said your clock does that, but what about the odo?
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
I had an ENTIRE EXHAUST put on with a "performance" muffler, and it came to $200-210.

The muffler, by the way was a Magnaflow http://www.magnaflow.com/ and is real nice. Not loud at all!

The car needed an exhaust,so I figured I'd do the performance one at this time. I wouldn't pay good money to replace a good exhaust. It is not worth it. Performance gains on smaller motors (even turbo ones) are so miniscule that you can't even notice them.

  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
What kinda car was it that you had a performance exhaust installed on?

I know for a fact that the Techtonics exhaust I mentioned adds 10 wheel hp to the car, have seen dyno tests to prove it. The Magnaflow is very loud, from what I have heard. That becomes annoying on long trips.

You could also take thr stock exhaust and sell it to someone, but I wouldn't replace a perfectly good exhaust either. That's just my opinion.

i THINK i saw my odometer do that once, WITH the clock. but i could be imagining seeing that since you mentioned it. either way - i wouldn't be too concerned it is resets itself right away.

I appreciate your ideas but I wish that they were
that easy. All the coffee cups that I can find
all flute out at the top and that console is too
short and they won't sit flat in there. Oh well

I guess you are doomed to drink from 12 ounce tonic cans or foam cups for the life of your car!

Da**it. I'll bet that wagoneer had proper cup holders.

Greg, I'd bet your hypothesis is corrrect - the difference is that carsdirect.com adds in some assumed regional advertising fee. You'll probably run into this with the dealer too when you negotiate a deal if you start the negotiations as $$$ over invoice.

Of course, the best deal is whatever you can get, so where invoice actually lies is somewhat academic. I doubt you'll be getting on $200 over invoice deals on a car like this either, although you should certainly try.

Overall, I'd certainly trust sources like edmunds, kbb, and CR before carsdirect.com. Generally, you can do better on your own if you are willing to do your own negotiations.

    Good luck on your shopping.

I'm bringing my car back to the dealer on Monday to have them put my dash back together correctly. Also, I have noticed a couple of things they "forgot" to do when they took my dash apart. Screws are missing and screw plugs are missing.

These VW Techs must be real proud of their workmanship.......hear the sarcasm?
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
You have more patience than I do. How long has it been since the car was there? If that were me, the car would have been left there the next day after I got it in that condition.

I hope they get everything right. Also, you might consider trying another dealer, as well as opening a case file with VWoA.

    Mark,

Yes, I found out today that the $367 difference covers $200 "Special SCVDA Fund" (advertising), $142 "Floorplan Interest Reserve" (helps defray interest expense on unsold inventory?) and $25 "Port Prep Fee." I think all these expenses smell a little funny, but I believe they are legitimate in that VW really charges them to their dealers. Since the price I'm offered is $100 over invoice, maybe paying these other charges isn't too unreasonable. I don't know.

I don't hink it's a matter of patience. It is a matter of convienence. It is difficult for me to get to the dealer during a workday. I had planned to just let them work on my car at the 10K service, but after finding various items that were not put back correctly I decided to call the service manager and make an appt. I will let them work on my car on emore time and then I will take it to another dealer. The problem with going to another dealer is they won't provide me with a loaner since another dealer caused these issues. So, Monday it is.......the Svc Mgr was very attentive......this dealer is VERY concerned about the surveys customers get and always wants me to give them the best rating. It's funny though, when I have a bad experience at the dealer, the survey's seem to skip my house!!!!!!
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
You need to get on the phone with VWoA and tell them your experience. I can almost guarantee that they will make sure the other dealer will give you a loaner car, considering what you have been through. I would also tell the service manager it would be nice of him to provide the 15K service complementary for all the inconvenience you have been put through due to the laziness of his staff.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
The ad fee, you can negotiate with. The floor plan and the other fee are for real. Every VW that's sold has these fees, for those exact amounts, attached.

to finally figure out my gas tank issue.

Light goes on, drive 40 additional miles (1.5 gallons or so), and fill up is only 13 gallons or so.

Couldn't really get an answer. Am assuming reserve is more like 3 gallons.

So next time I get low on fuel (on a weekend), I am going to put an extra gallon in the trunk and run it dry just to find out for sure.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
The tank has a 1.9 gallon reserve, it says so in the owner's manual. Does your fuel gauge go all the way up when you fill the car with the 13 gallons?

Also, make sure the pump doesn't cut off prematurely. For some reason at this one gas station I go to sometimes, it does. Really made me mad once, because I ended up with 7/8 a tank of gas when I thought it was going to be full.
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
I will give the dealer one more shot...then I wil call VW Cust service.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Like I said, you are alot more patient than I am. Good luck this time. :)
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
maybe you were being sarcastic, but you know a survey won't be coming from VW for your bad service visits, right? they ain't fools over at VWoA!! :)
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
So your saying I should act happy after the dealer visit and then rip'em in the survey? OK I can do that....
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
They usually call me after every service is done. Most of the time they do anyway.
