Did having the accident in the Golf change your mind to that effect?
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
Yep. I'd been in far less severe accidents before while riding in or driving american and japanese cars and not a single one of those cars held up nearly as well as the Golf. I was sold that night.

I just came from the mall and they had a new Mazda 6 on display...VERY impressive. It looks like something I would consider when it's time for a new car.

BlueGuy: It sounds as though you might need some counseling for your "phobia" of Japanese cars. Since your opinion is not based on empirical data, your thought process sounds a little out there.

    A discussion for CAR ENTHUSIASTS!!!!!

Since many on here were bringing up the Mazda 6, I thought I would share my observations....
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
So sharing observations about cars OTHER than the Jetta is ok now?
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
    loosen you curlers
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
    My what?

Was that a personal attack? Should I call Pat? Wahhhh!!!!
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
    NO PLEASE DON'T REPORT ME........;-)

I still think the 6 is sweeeeet

another phrase would of been "your panties are in a wad" ever heard of that?

    Just ribbing ya
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
How often is the cabin filter to be changed in the Jetta's?
  • chmeeeechmeeee Member Posts: 327
I believe its on the 20k service.
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
Ha! I was thinking of that exact same phrase. :D

Glad somebody on here has a sense of humour...
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
You aren't going to have to call Pat. You know when she checks in here, she is going to delete all these senseless, useless messages (including this one, probably) and yell at all of us. :)
  • patpat Member Posts: 10,421
    consider yourself yelled at. :)

You can delete your own messages.

"Lexus' may indeed by good vehicles.

However, I will never buy a vehicle from a company that has to create a whole new name in the U.S. market so that they can charge more for both the vehicle and for maintenance, service, and parts (i.e. Lexus, Acura)."

Lexus "may" build good cars? How about "Lexus DOES build good cars". That's better. You have to admit that creating a whole new name worked. Nobody wants to spend big bucks on a Toyota, even if it is a RWD full size luxury sedan. Hence, Lexus. All of the European luxury auto makers laughed when the Lexus was introduced. They ain't laughing no more.

On topic: I'd much rather be in a LS430 than a Golf or Jetta if I was going to be in an accident.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I would much rather be in an accident with an LS 430 too than a Golf or Jetta. Only if it's the other driver's fault though. :)

fish:: It sounds as though you might need some counseling for your "phobia" of Japanese cars. Since your opinion is not based on empirical data, your thought process sounds a little out there.

Fish, it's no more "out there" than someone saying they won't buy a car because they dislike the dash. If anything my feeling is based on a sense of security, something that's pretty important in the realm of enjoying one's car. Especially when one drives with the reckless abandon that I do. If I don't feel safe dontcha think that'll severely curtail my illegal driving time?

new: On topic: I'd much rather be in a LS430 than a Golf or Jetta if I was going to be in an accident.

I'd rather never be in any current or past Lexus thanks. Regardless of the safety issue, I just plain don't like their cars. Ditto Honda/Acura/Toyota.

Gokings: Had my Jetta since Sept 2001 and just over 20,000 miles (taking it in for the 20k service on Sat.) It has been flawless. I like driving it... it makes me smile. Something my Accord never did.

blueguy: I know what you're saying about the "feeling" of your car. I noticed the solid bank vault feeling the first time I sat in a MkIV and closed the door. My friend who owns a Corolla noticed it the first time he rode in my car. I sat in a 2003 Accord at the auto show, and they have done a lot toward the solid feeling. The doors feel much more substantial than the 98-02 models, and the car overall just feels higher quality. If they made a wagon, we would consider one for my wife's next car.

There seem to be a glut of 5 door hatches out there, yet very few proper wagons. By "wagon" I mean cars that could contain my two large dogs in the cargo area without having to fold the rear seats. :\
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Why not get a Jetta wagon? They have a bunch of room inside. I am sure they could handle your 2 dogs without folding down the back seat.
  • ppowerppower Member Posts: 93
If, any thing other auto makers have copied VW in the antenna department. VW has been using Fuba antennas for over a decade. Now everyone and their brother is using them or that style of antennas.

I think the Altima and G35 are solid built cars, but the Altima kind of skimps on interior niceness.

Another note: you can't get a new Jetta with a VR6 for less than $25k (MSRP $26,200+). The VR6 is a more comparable model to the Mazda6 3.0 which starts at $21,620 MSRP, even with leather and sport package the MSRP is still cheaper than the base GLX VR6 package.

  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I have also noticed alot of manufacturers copying VW's door handle style.

GLX Jettas usually go for $25K or so, if that. The GLX comes with rain sensing wipers, electronic stability control, and memory power seats on both sides. None of which are available on the 6 at any price.

64 messages since yesterday! you guys are busy!

i am confused - what is this from "mynewvw"?

[If you have nothing to add to the conversation, maybe it's you who should "stop typing".]

i am lost.....who is this "mynewvw"? and what does it mean by that statement? seems kind of out of the blue. someone, anyone, is there a missing post or something?

and, for the record, it would HAVE to be an LS430 for me to feel SAFER than i do in my car. of course, the LS430 probably doesn't have coil issues....;)
  • AnakinAnakin Member Posts: 410
The Jetta Wagon is on our short list. :)
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Really the only wagons available (besides Jetta and Passat) are Focus (recall city), the Matrix/Vibe twins (pretty nice, but no power between them), and BMW/Audi models. The Jetta is the cheapest European engineered wagon you can buy. It is also available with the 1.8T and the GLX's luxury features (called the Luxury Pkg.). Good luck! :)

about the Kia Rio Cinco!! :)

"How the heck can you say anyone's emanating VW's "interior design?" Just how many "design choices" are there when you're outfitting the interior of a car? Lessee here -- two buckets up front and a bench in the rear, ... there aren't that many things you can change."

I'd love to get a front bench in a car or SUV now. They only seem to be available in trucks.

    :-(
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
What about the RAV4, Highlander, CRV, Forrester, Outback, Escape, Sportage, etc, ....?
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
All of those you listed, with the exception of the Outback, are considered SUVs. Those are not cars. We mean actual wagon bodies of cars.

Also, a front bench seat is still available in some full-size cars, like the Impala, Bonneville, and Toyota Avalon.
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
Those are all basically wagons. What is the difference? They sure aren't SUV's.

In my book, and most, SUV's have a frame and a low gear. These are just elevated wagons, or at the biggest stretch, minivans.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Handling prowess, safety features (they are considered SUVs and don't have to comply to the same standards), fuel economy, power. There are alot of different factors.

The only real "wagons" are ones like the Focus, Jetta, Matrix/Vibe, and soon-to-come Mazda6.
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
We used to have a 76 Monaco wagon.

Are you saying that had "handling prowess", fuel economy (400ci)? It certainly had power, and even more certainly was a wagon.

It is known widely that these ones mentioned kind of filled the void left by the real wagons. More than them, the real SUV's have filled that void.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
"I'd rather never be in any current or past Lexus thanks. Regardless of the safety issue, I just plain don't like their cars."

Glad we could settle this. I can accept that you "plain don't like their cars." If I had the money, I would spend it on something other than a Lexus myself....maybe...until the IS430 comes out. In Lexus price ranges, my money would most likely go to BMW (3 series or 5 series). Just as Lexus builds super reliable and durable luxury cars, BMW makes THE definition of sport sedan. They are so good, and so sweet looking, that I could probably live with reliability issues if there were any. Sooo...I don't really like Lexus cars either, but I know they are nowhere near "tin can" cars AND they are definately safe cars. Some might say Lexus builds the best cars (fit and finish, reliability, refinement) in the world.

    Anakin-
PT cruiser? I dunno, just a thought. You could probably pick one up pretty cheap. Nobody has mentioned it yet and it's supposed to be a pretty solid machine. They have a beast of a turbo engine available too. Is it a wagon? Is it a truck?
  • anonymous02anonymous02 Member Posts: 1,538
Isn't the PT Barnum using the same motor as the Neon?

    Just say "Bye!" to Neon:

I've read that before. That's crazy.
  • ppowerppower Member Posts: 93
There wasn't a GLI model when I got mine. Heck when I got my VR6 in 1999 there wasn't even a GLX out yet.

One thing is for sure I will NOT be buying another VW ever after this one. It is a first class POS.

    Ppower
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Oh yeah, forgot about the PT. They are pretty nice cars. I drove one a long time ago when they first came out, for the heck of it. It didn't have enough front leg room for me though (I am 6'3), but it was pretty nice just the same. The back seat is alot roomier than the Jetta's and a little roomier than the Passat's, if my memory serves me correctly.
  • chmeeeechmeeee Member Posts: 327
Subaru Impeza/WRX, Legacy/Outback (my father has one). Mercury Sable/Ford Taurus. Saab 9-5, though this leans in the more expensive direction.

I like the PT, the interior is great, and there is a ton of cargo space. It is definitely a love/hate car though.
  • AnakinAnakin Member Posts: 410
    Let me reiterate.

Wagon = TWO BIG DOGS can fit behind the rear seats without having to fold them.

This rules out a whole bunch of stuff like the Matrix/Vibe, Protege5, PT Cruiser, Subaru Impreza/WRX and anything else that doesn't have that "wagon" space in the back.

This leaves the Jetta/Passat and the Subaru Legacy/ Forester... maybe the Mazda 6 if they bring the wagon over. The Focus has the space, but I'm just not interested.

though the civic is in the same size class as the jetta, i don't consider these cars as direct competitors. and honda really screwed up with the current generation of civics. in terms of price, quality, refinement, power, features, solidness and price the accord is more of a competitor. and i don't think accords have that tin car feel to them. what i like about the jetta is that it has that feel of substance. most other manufacturers equate small size with cheapness.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Substance, that's it. That's the word I have been looking for. I have driven just about everything in the same size category as the Jetta (and even owned a couple of them), and couldn't find anything to "fit" as well as the Jetta does. I agree about the Civic. I haven't been in the new Accord yet, but I hear it's nice. I am not interested in the car actually, it's hideously ugly to me.
  • chmeeeechmeeee Member Posts: 327
If you look at the rear of the coupe, you can tell there was some serious design borrowing from Mercedes going on.
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
a C Class 4 Matic. in silver with gray leather. SWEET!

what is funny, is we have 4 inches of snow today. and people are stuck in FOUR inches, in their trucks and SUV's. i love it. idiots. a guy was in an old Porsche in front of me - doing fine. so was i. i don't understand some people. how oh how did they ever get drivers licenses??!!
  • target3target3 Member Posts: 155
PTs? Ugliest things out there - IMO.

Lexus vs. Jetta safety? Not an issue. Jetta ranks high in all categories. I would prefer to be in a Jetta compared to any other car.

  • chmeeeechmeeee Member Posts: 327
I know what you are saying, last year I watched a Jeep trying to make its way up the hill that my school is on. He had it in 2WD and was fishtailing all over the place. I came by an hour later and he had slid off the road on the downhill side and taken out three sections of wrought iron fence. Meanwhile I was driving a FWD Nissan Quest all over the city for 4 hours and never once had a problem.
  • AnakinAnakin Member Posts: 410
I thought we were discussing wagons that cost less than one MEELION dollars. ;^)

If I had my druthers, I'd have the new S4 for me and the S4 Avant for the mrs. Yee-ha.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
"I would prefer to be in a Jetta compared to any other car."

OK. We'll dual it out. I get an S600, you get a Jetta. We'll crash into each other. We'll see who wins. 100 bucks says I drive right through the Jetta and keep on going.
  • target3target3 Member Posts: 155
    doubtful
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
An S600 would vaporize just about any car including the Jetta.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
You only got 4 inches? We have at least 6 on the ground right now. What a mess! I didn't go to work today, but did go out to the grocery store to get some things, and to the bank. I got halfway to the bank though, and had to turn around and come back. The ASR was doing fine, but the slush was too heavy and the turbo kept kicking in and making the wheels wanna spin. So I gave up. I got done what I needed to though, so that's cool.
