Also, they should run you around 300 bucks, plus 50 for a new headlight switch. The install took be about 2 hours overall, which is less then I thought it would.

    anthony....first time I've seen you around here....(converted_vw)

also for the rear brakes....try this link

    http://www.vwmkiv.com/brakelight.htm

I've heard 1156 bulbs can replace the P21W ones, for a much cheaper price.

I would also choose the 1.8t with cloth instead of the 2.0 with leather. Eventhough i like my 2.0, I know I would love the 1.8t more. I would drive both cars and see the difference for yourself. There is a BIG difference whether automatic or stick.

It's been about 3 weeks since I washed my car and my Jetta's feeling neglected. We are in the process of placing our house on the market so we have been very busy getting the house in order....eg - Painting!!! If I even attempted to wash our cars, my wife would probably divorce me!!!! ;-)

I am purchasing a 03 Jetta GLS 1.8T (automatic) and I asked the dealer about installing a remote starter, this is what he said: "Remote starters
are not recomended for VW's as you you have to destroy the cars electrical system to install one. It will void your warranty"
    Has anyone else heard this?
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I talked with Best Buy, and they more or less said it would be complicated because of the theft system. I chose not to go through with it.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I hear the ECodes are much brighter and better. I still have a hard time paying $300+ for headlights, then having to wire in the fog/city lights as well... :)
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I have some questions about your Neuspeed bar. Tried to email you, but none listed here...
  • 8u6hfd8u6hfd Member Posts: 1,391
YOu don't have to buy the E-codes with fogs.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
But why not get the whole she-bang if you're gonna get ECodes, right?? :)
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
What do you need to know?
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
How much it changed the handling. I wanna reduce my body lean in hard turns, and I think I can do it with this without having to lower the car. Thanks.

I know you explained before, but I am too lazy to search and I forgot. :)
  • 8u6hfd8u6hfd Member Posts: 1,391
In case later you want to go OEM HIDs. In this case, there are no fog lights, just double turn signals
  • cards28cards28 Member Posts: 145
Does anyone know if there will be another GB on Neuspeed sway bars? Or, how often do they have GBs?

Vocus, are you saying that sway bays will lower the car to the ground? There isn't a lot of space now. Living in a snow belt might be a problem.
  • justinjustin Member Posts: 1,918
can your car get any lower anyway? wouldn't you run the risk of damaging it?
  • cards28cards28 Member Posts: 145
    8u6hfd,
What are HIDs? I don't know what all the definitions mean yet. I'm getting there, though.
  • 8u6hfd8u6hfd Member Posts: 1,391
    High Intensity Discharge (Xenon lights)

The nice bright lights you see usually on the luxury cars, and 02 Maxima & 03 Focus. They have the bluish to purple look to them
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Stab bar on the back will not lower the car, no. You have to change the shocks and springs to accomplish this. Depending upon where you live, it might not be wise to lower the car too much. I know I am safe just dropping it 1.5" or so, so that's what I would do.

And HIDs for Jettas are anywhere from $1000-1400! I love the light they provide though. Would switch to them in a second if I had an accident and had to get the lights in front replaced.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
The dealer will probably void my warranty if he found out I dropped my car (which I have not yet). I am going to try the swaybar first, and see where that gets me.

And he will more than likely void the warranty for the chip, which I am definitely getting in February. I don't care, that's what extended warranties are for.
  • cards28cards28 Member Posts: 145
Sorry, what is the chip for???
  • AnakinAnakin Member Posts: 410
    Hi guys,

The sway bar is a simple piece of equipment that connects the rear suspension together and transfers weight from one side of the car to the other to reduce body roll. This is the single best piece of equipment to cure the rolly-polies. I bought the Neuspeed 25mm and put it on the middle setting. When I get my other suspension bits installed, I think I will have them put it on the highest setting. It will not affect your ride comfort or your ride height. The only thing you will notice is the car cornering much flatter.

As for mods vs warranty, the dealership cannot void your entire warranty over a couple of mods. They can refuse you warranty service if the item in question is affected by aftermarket parts. (ex: they can't deny window reg warranty service because of sport suspension, but they can deny a blown diverter valve repair if you have a chip that increases turbo boost, and thereby stress on the DV)

Some dealerships are more mod-friendly, and some are right bastids and might send you elsewhere. By law, however, they can't deny service for problems unrelated to modifications. Still, if a dealer refuses you service, it's up to you to lawyer up and prove that the part in question isn't affected by your mods.

For this reason, I am only changing suspension bits and leaving the chip for after my warranty is up.

P.S. The chip increases the turbo boost, giving your car more power. I can get a GIAC chip which will give my 1.8T a bit over 200hp and 245 lb-ft. of torque. Yee-ha.
  • cards28cards28 Member Posts: 145
I know zip about the new engines that are on cars now. I grew up in the muscle car era. Didn't know much then either.
Will the Triptonic benefit with this chip?
  • AnakinAnakin Member Posts: 410
I guess I should start over.

When we say "chip" we are referring to the car's ECU computer chip that controls various functions of the car, like turbo boost, timing, fuel regulation, etc.

The stock ECU from Volkswagen has been optimized for longevity and fuel efficiency.

There are some companies like GIAC, APR, and others who make replacement ECU chips that modify the way your car performs. These usually give your car more power. A replacement ECU is one of the quickest ways to increase power on a turbo car because it increases boost. Usually these companies test the chips to make sure they don't seriously affect your car's reliability, though generally the more power you decide to add, the less reliability you incur.

You can add a chip to a Tiptronic car, but you will want to be sure not to get a chip that is beyond the strength of the car's transmission. You can read on VWVortex in the 1.8Turbo forum for more info. Some people believe the 1.8T can only handle about 250 lb-ft of torque, while others say it can take more (or less).

Just make sure you read up and decide what's best for you.

I'm on my way out the door to pick up some cash money for my Camry. Man, I hope, the buyer said to meet him at 3:00pm. Please, pray, pray......
Let you know when I get back. Isn't this fun???
  • fish8fish8 Member Posts: 2,282
Congrats (I hope) on the sale of your Camry!!!!
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I have the Tiptronic as well. You can't go higher than "stage 1" with chips. Once you start reading websites and stuff about chipping, you will know what I mean.

To the man on the corner wearing a hooded jacket standing in the shadow of a building. Please pay the man leaning against the white Camry with ice icicles hanging from his nose. A wad of cash mysteriously appeared in hand. I just got a glimpse of a person turning the same corner from where he first appeared.
While I was out, a message on the answering machine, a man from Hot Autos said that he could sell the Camry for the amount that I hand in the paper for($4,600). I just sold it for $3,800. He only gets "$50.00" for his trouble. They have a 90% success rate. Maybe a come on, but where was he a week ago? Oh well....but, isn't this fun?

Anyway, I can start driving the Jetta NOW!!! It's just about +10 above with a wind chill of -15 -20 below here in the windy city. Take it out of the garage tomorrow and get it all warmed up and slip into the hot leather seats and grab the B-) for a short test drive around the block, but carefully though. I think I will look for that guy in the hooded jacket, also. Can't get it too dirty on the 1st time out. Is this boring to you guys??? Sorry....As David Letterman says, hee, hee. Stay tuned for more adventures from the guy leaning on the white Camry. :->
  • AnakinAnakin Member Posts: 410
Your Jetta will not warm up very quickly while sitting in the driveway. In fact, if I recall, the manual says you shouldn't do that. I find that it warms up much more quickly when I just drive it. Start it up and let it idle for a few seconds, then get going.

Keep the revs under 3000 until the engine warms up to 190. Be nice to your new car.

Hope you got the seat heaters.
  • bpeeblesbpeebles Member Posts: 4,085
    Dont be mislead here....

True HID is essentially a controlled lightning bolt (continuous electric arc) that is generated in an enclosure then 'piped' to the rear of the headlight housings using fibre-optic 'light pipes'. An HID system costs around $900 USD. (you may order a kit if you wish)

Xenon is not HID! xenon is simply a gas that is a member of the halogen family... thus just a fancy name for a halogen bulb. Please refer to your high-school textbooks for a refresher in the periodic table.

The xenon bulbs that you and I can purchase for $25 are a cheap substitute for a REAL HID headlight system.
  • cards28cards28 Member Posts: 145
Yes...the Jetta has been in a garage since 12/30 and I've started it every day just to warm the fluids. It does have heated seats. I didn't have much interest in heated seats until the Jetta came along.
I won't put much more than just a couple hundred miles driving around the block tomorrow.

Let's see if I can stump you with this question: (I haven't thrown out a question that you could not answer). Try this one: The valet key has a very small image of an open-end box wrench on the black plastic grip. What does the wrench signify? You have 10 minutes to answer. The winner with receive a 2001 Super Bowl ticket on the 50 yd line. There wont be any one around to spill beer on you. Guaranteed!
  • chmeeeechmeeee Member Posts: 327
Well clearly it means that its the service key.
  • 8u6hfd8u6hfd Member Posts: 1,391
What you forgot was the pressurized gas in a HID capsule is mostly Xenon gas.

The Halogen lights, you buy that claim to be Xenon, either just claim it, or contains a trace amount of Xenon gas, just to advertise "Xenon". Halogen lights....the ones we refer to using the tungsten filament, uses Argon gas, sometimes mixed with some Nitrogen gas.

The lighting for say street lighting don't use Xenon, but mercury vapor or sodium vapor.

THe automotive world uses Xenon because they start up much quicker compared to the mercury or sodium vapor typically used in street lighting.

I have the 1.8T, and I start it and let it run until the engine speed drops from 1200rpm or so (when it's started - and I have to park outside too) to the normal 800rpm. Usually takes about a minute or so. Then I drive off and don't go over 3000rpm until the engine reaches 190 (which is no time flat).
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Congrats on the sale of the Camry. :)

The key is the valet key, and the sybmol means service like Chmeeee said. I like having a real valet key (the Jetta's my first car with one) so I can lock the glovebox and trunk from the valet attendant when leaving it there.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
You sold the GTI because it was troublesome, so why are you selling this one now? And how many miles on it?

I don't think the 1.8T takes that long to warm, not as long as my mom's Bonneville used to, with its big 3.8 V-6 engine. Now that sucker took a while to warm up!
  • patpat Member Posts: 10,421
You can advertise a vehicle for sale via the Used Power Shopper (follow links from http://www.edmunds.com), but you may not offer anything for sale in the Town Hall.

That's explained in your Membership Agreement which is linked on the left side of this page.

    Thanks.
  • cards28cards28 Member Posts: 145
Yes, the correct answer is: "Service Key"
There are 2 winners: chmeee and vocus.
Sorry, only 1 ticket, and ties negate the prize.
    Maybe next time.
  • cards28cards28 Member Posts: 145
Sounds like a good idea to warm up the engine to give oil time to circulate through the turbo. Some time ago, I heard/read that a turbo engine should also continue to run for a minute or two when you reach your destination. But at that point in time, isn't the oil already circulating through the turbo? Am I all "oily" here?
  • 8u6hfd8u6hfd Member Posts: 1,391
When you shut off the engine...no oil is flowing through the turbo
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
    No comment... :)

I found out what I wanted about the swaybar, thanks. I am getting the 28 adjustable when I get it. :)
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I always let the car run for about a minute or so when I reach my destination if I have been driving hard (most of the time). I also am easy on it (not above 3krpm like I said before) before it warms to 190.

I don't think there is a cool down issue with these cars, but I do it just to be safe. Also, Chryslers are the ones whose turbos fried because of the "baking"...
  • cards28cards28 Member Posts: 145
    vocus,
What is it about the 1.8T engine (Manual? or Auto?) that you don't like?
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
Malt never corrected Ruefus' assertion that it was a 60, even if it were a 40 or 35 mph corner, it's still beneath the car's abilities by a long shot.

Vocus...keeping quiet? Yeah you angered the Mazda crowd enough that they follow you from post to post so that makes sense. :)
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
No, Anthony didn't like the 1.8T. I LOVE mine. :0
  • cards28cards28 Member Posts: 145
I had a 1990 Plymouth Laser with a turbo engine and that must have been where I heard about the cool now. I didn't always and had no problems. I was lucky.
  • 8u6hfd8u6hfd Member Posts: 1,391
Read the manual under "Shutting off the Engine"

While it doesn't say turbos exclusively, it says something like:

let the engine idle for a few minutes after hard or extended driving to avoid damage due to heat buildup
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I drove a 24V VR6 in a GLX Tiptronic, and I didn't really care for it. I had to push the go pedal down alot further to get the same reponse compared to the 1.8T. The T has raw, brute power that's associated with turbos though, and I guess I just got used to it.
  • adg44adg44 Member Posts: 385
Punk kid.... ha! You're lucky you're on the other side of the continent, Mark. ;):D

I liked the instant power that the VR6 had, and the awesome low end torque. I actually like the 1.8T better when I drive it in stock mode, because it's much smoother and the turbo lag isn't as bad. Also the lack of a top end (past 5500 RPM) somewhat bothers me. I do love the "psssht" sound I get from my DV and CAI, but that's about it. ;)

Maybe it's also because it's been misfiring for most of the past 4,000 miles, so that could be one reason why. I go back to the dealer on Tuesday to get another coil pack replaced.

    Vocus,

The Blitz DTTDC was around $200. The install is somewhat of a pain in the [non-permissible content removed], but it's not too bad. There have been a lot of complications on 02 and 03 model 1.8Ts while trying to run the turbo timer. Something with the airbag sensors or something...

    - Anthony
