Wow, I have this picture in my mind of the trucker waving the BMW owner into his truck, driving for about half a mile, then both of them swimming next to each other as the rig sinks behind them! Man, that's a shame, it seems like every year all I see are dogs on roofs trying to get into boats. It sounds like a whirlpool filled with mud, priests, alligators, and maybe a gun collection or two. :o)

Thanks!! I've been dreaming about owning one and behold I am driving one now!!! You're right about the fact that "it begs to be driven". I like the low growl when the tach goes beyond 3000 rpms. I would like to have somebody run a mile ahead of me to check for radar and then just blast off behind him on the interstate....yipeeeee... At 4th gear the engine just keeps saying "more juice.. more juice !!!" ;)

awhile back you were discussing the silver trim around windows. fyi the dealer today said they were stainless steel.

Well, I actually did quite well in the .com arena. I could have had a lot more, but with stock prices going below my option price, I'm glad I got rid of some of it. I've made quite a bit, but not enough to say I'm Bill Gates or Bill Gross.

    I have (currently):

    1 91 Mustang 5.0 (auto)
    1 94 Rx-7 Turbo (stick)
    1 01 330i (auto)
    1 01 M3 (stick)

I had a 99 M3, but got rid of it a few months ago. I have yet to really break in my 01 M3 as I want it to hit a couple of thousand miles before I rev it to that 8000 RPM limit. At that point, look out cause I'm going scream down the roads and look for those Vettes....

    Hi gurumike:

It's been a week since you last checked the status of my car (112). Can you please look it up again? 330xi 5-speed, black/black, PP, SP, CWP, CD, Xenon, going to Freeport, NY. Also, I found out that a coworker of mine ordered a steel gray 330xi with the same options that I have going to Manhattan; could you check on that one as well? He says he ordered the car around May 7.

    Denright:

What's the most recent status of your car? Just curious to see what's going on.

The reason I ask is I am supposed to acquire a 330i this week from a houston dealership through richard foard in Lafayette. I was curious if anyone knew whether the houston dealerships had been flooded. Thanks.

I am in the same area you are, i have been to Classic and John Roberts and never got the same treatmeant i got from Moritz. That being said i got mine thru Carsdirect.com and they hooked me up with Moritz. I am so close to Classic i stop by sometimes for little things and my last visit to service was pleasant .

    happy hunting,

As you can tell from the tv, we have major flooding all over the city...not sure about the specific BMW dealerships, but your problem may end up being more GETTING TO the dealerships, as opposed to the dealership being flooded. DOn't know if conditions will improve later in the week, but it could be awhile before things get back to "normal"

Curious,...I also ordered from Richard in Lafayette. My car arrived at Moss Motors last week! I was planning on picking it up in Lafayette....Did you pay extra to coordinate the Houston delivery? How is your delivery going to take place? Just curious. Thanks!

Planning on buying one of the two--can't decide!
Love them both....live in the snowbelt.
Anyone here have any imput on the BMW's
    AWD models? Anyone driven both?
  • cccmdcccmd Member Posts: 9
The car I want - 330i (topaz blue), PP, SP, grey leather, CD, steptronic, xenons - is in Houston (of all places) at one of the dealerships. I don't know which...yet. Richard is trading them the 330i for another car once it arrives from the VPC. After it arrives, it gets shipped to Houston and the truck brings mine back. That is assuming 1) the car hasn't been flooded 2) and the highways are suitable for traffic. I then drive down to Lafayette and pick it up. I didn't pay extra for this, but it can be a consideration in the deal you make with your salesman b/c they can make you pay more if the car is a long way away.

Please pass on more info if you come across any. At this moment, I am not too optimistic.

In my contract, under Vehicle identification number, I got WBAAN...
Q1: I did a factory order, where this VIN number comes from? The dealer mentioned this car was under somebody else name, but now it is under mine, and will take 7 weeks to deliver, could this be the reason?
Q2: Is this car with VIN number WBAANxxxx made in Germany or south africa?
Q3:In my contract, it said THIS VEHICLE SOLD: AS-IS,
but I am buying a brand new car, what is meaning of this AS-IS.

    Thanks,
    Q
P.S. Pat, thanks for your reply, need more answers.

Have somewhat of a delemmia. Just yesterday placed an order with the local BMW dealership. All was going well until delivery date was changed from the middle of August to the first week in September. When I was negotiating, the first date was given; however, when the contract was being written the date had changed. I was planning on driving the new 325i on a planned trip to NY as I don't feel comfortable driving my present 1985 BMW 528e. With that statement it's safe in assuming the writer is a different sex than most of the posters on this board. At any rate, the September date didn't sit very well with me as I REALLY do need a new car. I have spent the last three months spending an enormous time deciding between the Audi, Passat (what a name for a car!) and BMW. Obviously, just one short test drive made the decision easy. The model, options, colors, and best price was the time consuming part. Getting back to the issue of delivery date, the sales person suggested I use a rental for my trip east. When I suggested she share the rental cost, since had I known the delivery date was September, I would have purchased the car with an out-of-town dealership that had an earlier delivery date, but somewhat higher price.
The sales person is going to check with "superiors" and call me tomorrow. How likely is my my request to be honored? One last thing, where can I buy European license plates? Much appreciation for any help.

1). From the sound of it, looks like you got a car that was ordered by someone who then cancelled. This car was probably being manufactured when you signed the contract with the dealer. That's why the VIN is already known to the dealer.

2). VIN decoding info can be found in the FAQ section on http://www.e46fanatics.com.

3). Don't know about this one.

It's highly unlikely your dealer will pay part of your rental fees.

Almost everyone who has ordered a BMW will attest, delivery dates are very general estimates. If the dealer guesses the delivery date to within a week, the buyer should feel fortunate.

There are a lot of variables at work here: where port of entry is, how far the dealer is from that port, how many cars were on the ship now waiting for delivery, and (rarely), Customs may decide a particular car needs a more thorough examination.

The dealers are held prisoners as much as purchasers when it comes to getting cars on his lot. It doesn't make him any more happier than you, but you are both powerless where delivery dates are concerned.

His delivery date was only a guess, not a promise.

On the plus side, the closer the hoped-for delivery date arrives, the more accurately your dealer can provide a date. Who knows, you car may arrive at the end of August.

    Welcome to Town Hall!

I don't know whether the dealership is likely to honor your request, but that's a great thing to try - others here may have different opinions, but it seems to me that you have nothing to lose by insisting that they honor your request, especially if they acknowledge switching the delivery date on you after all the negotiations were completed. (They do acknowledge that, right?)

Just curious - and I don't know the answer to your question - but why do you need "European" plates?

Hey, I'm glad to hear that you got decent treatment at Classic BMW even though you bought from Moritz. I hope I will receive the same treatment since I live up in Plano (Classic and John Roberts are the closest to me, I guess). I'm still awaiting my 325i down in Temple, TX...hopefully, by the first week of July. Anyways, I was a little concerned about service from either dealership.
  • alpine325ialpine325i Member Posts: 209
You can find the German European Union plates at www.driversfound.com/gak/ $35. The CORRECT plate frame can be bought at any BMW dealer for $12 to $15. Just make sure that you buy the Genuine BMW plate frame. The frame that GAK offers is cheap and it requires holes to be drilled in the front of your car, and you DON'T want that! The BMW plate frame snaps right in to the front bumper and is a PERFECT fit for your car. I had a German European Union plate made for my 325i and it looks great! I get alot of comments, plus it looks exactly like the one on the 2001 3- series brochure, except the numbers. (M RE 2001). Have fun! Hope this helps. :o)

What a terrific board!!!! I'm not sure of the proper protocol for replying to answers to my questions, so if my responses appear in the wrong places, please excuse my ignorance. To goody4; you know I never really did think about all the variables you expressed. In the middle of the contract, a combination of surprise, disappointment, and motive (dishonest car sellers)got in the way of reason. Until the change of delivery was mentioned, I was extremely pleased with "my sales person" for taking so much time in explaining all the features of the car and in making me feel my satisfaction was important.

To pat,Host; yes, the change was acknowledged after bringing something up on the computer that said week 30 and then counting off the weeks on a calendar. The reason for the plates - to make a statement. European plates add that extra pinnach - the envy goes up a notch.

To alpine 325i, thank you. I'm ordering the plates now. I've spent a lot of time doing searches which came up empty. Have you been ticketed?

Macdude44's recent post about his window tinting reminded me that there's a site with lots of good info about the subject for those interested:

    http://www.autowindowtintings.com

By the way, Macdude, I used the Quantum film on my wagon, and it looks great. You should be happy with your choice. There's a "technical" description of the film (and most other major brands) on that website.

You're doing just fine in terms of board protocol - welcome to the busiest discussion in all of Town Hall. You'll see what I mean once the weekend is over. ;-)

Keep us posted on how things go and it seems to me you have nothing to lose by standing your ground - I understand what goody4 says - and they are very good points - but what do you have to lose? There are several folks hanging out here who have indeed taken delivery earlier than expected, so that could happen for you as well.

You might also want to stop by our Women's Auto Center if you have a chance.

You're quite welcome. I've never got a ticket for the European plate on the front of my car. I live in Pennsylvania, my state doesn't require a mandatory PA plate on the front, only on the back. I know that in New Jersey and Maryland you have to have their state tags on the front and the back to be legal. If you go with the European plate on the front, you will have to drill 4 holes into the European plate and the frame at the same time, 2 for eack side. What I did was tape the Plate to the Frame with masking tape wrapped around it to keep it still. Then I put it on a table (workbench) and drilled 4 holes, 2 for each side. Then I attached the plate to the frame with the screws. Then you just snap the frame onto your front bumper. I used the screws from the plate that the dealer put on the front, BMW #22 screws. The part # for the BMW Euro Plate Frame is "Front Bumper Trim Part # 14. The necessary 4 screws are # 22. It's easy to do if you have an electric drill and a small drill bit. I hope this wasn't too confusing. :o)

I've just ordered a new 330i Topaz Blue,SP,black leather,CD,steptronic-slated for delivery sometime in August (as per my dealer).Today I was reading July C&D issue, which says, that BMW will make the SP suspension the standard setup for all 330 models(starts this fall),and BMW will add a new steering rack to all 3-series models, that includes stiffer bashings,a quicker ratio, and increased effort.Does anyone know in what production month all these changes are going to be implemented? What the SP will consist of ?Will this only going to be a sport seats,3-spoke steering wheel and M-style body parts? Really makes me think now if i should postpone my car production date to take advantage of the new changes.Every response will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

roc50mg - yours is still 112 but it will probably change any day now. Your buddies car, I believe is on a boat which docks on the 12th, in two days. So he'll have that in 7-10 days.

Dealers would not, except possibiley under very unusual circumstances, pay for rentals. They'll get a car as quickly as possible, it's in their best interest to. If they're making $X,X00 over invoice, that's how much they need to make after delivering the car. Rentals are very expensive and if there was such a practice, we'd all be paying a little more for our cars, me thinks.

I remember seeing a message on this board a few weeks ago on how the non-metallic paints were less durable than the metallics. Is that your experience?

And by the way, what is the difference between metallic and non-metallic black?

Sorry about the delay in responding to your post, I was out of town for the weekend. However I did have a somewhat pleasant surprise when I got home. Of course the first thing I did was to check to Owners' Circle for an update, and my 325i's status has now changed to "In transit to Processing Center"!!!! Whooo Hoooo!!! I'll be calling BMWNA in the AM to get the details.

As to your question about VIN Number, according to the FAQ page on www.e46fanatics.com the 11th digit indicates the factory in which your car was manufactured. Apparently 'N' indicates SA build.

Mine is headed for sunny MN.

Thanks again for looking up my car. I can't believe it's taking so long to get my car. I don't understand how my friend's car that was ordered 10 days after mine is already going to be here in a couple of days while mine hasn't even started production yet. This really sucks! If I had known it would take this long, I would have paid extra at another dealership that had an allocation for earlier production. I trusted my saleswoman that the car would be delivered to me by the end of June (she said 90% chance). Well, that only means that she lied to me. She denied me of having a nice car for my vacation time so she will pay when I give my evaluation to BMW about her.
Gurumike, can you tell me a little more about how allocation goes for the bimmers? Is it true that the dealerships that sell the most cars get preference in terms of more cars allocated as well as getting cars bumped up in production date? Also, is there a shortage of parts to build the 330xi as denright suggested from an earlier post?
Denright, what's the status of your car?

Just got back from my trip, and been enjoying my 325i alpine white lately. Still loving the darn thing to death!

    a few questions:
    1) The wheels collect dust breaks, besides the shield, someone here says waxing the rims, what type of wax should i use for this?

    2) My salesman told me to use pledge to clean the dash and wood trim, and not to use armon all. What do you guys suggest?

    3) Tar gets stucked on my white beauty, what product is safe for the wax and paint to easily get these grims off?

    4) What product should be safe for glasses, the darn sticker that came with the front windshield left me some glue stains....

    5) And the would trim sticker on airbag safty also left me glue stains, what should i use? Water did not work!

    Hi

    I can't seem to find a good deal on a new 325i ..
Anyone know any good dealers that can give me better then 600 bucks under msrp for a factory order and 1000 bucks off msrp in stock.

Is hard to find in stock 325i , sport package auto, xenon, cd player, that's all the stuff I can afford.

    Thanks alot greatly appreciated :))

Not sure what my status is. I will call BMWNA today to find out.

I keep getting told my car will definitely hit 150 by the week of June 25, but maybe before that. Considering it has been 112 for 17 days, I am hoping it will be soon.

My salesman says that there is a shortage of the AWD transmissions, and that is why my order will be coming in a month later than promised.

    Sigh.

I was able to get about $1,800 over invoice from Prestige in Ramsey, NJ (salesman: Bill Chudlinski(SP?)). However, this was over 2.5 years ago, give Bill a call at 201-327-2525. They also have an online inventory at www.prestigebmw.com.

    Don,

Well, this was the first new car I ever negotiated, and I know I didn't get as great a deal as others, but for a 325i, steel gray metallic, PP, SP, leather, HID, and CD, I got a deal on May 17th for $33K+TTL OTD, including locks and mats. Others I've heard around the board are getting $1500 over invoice. I think Aaron got his 330i for that at Temple. What '99 model do you own, and how is it coming along after a solid couple of years?

    Jay,

I'm glad to hear that your car finally made it on the boat! Did you get any info on how long it would take to get from SA to the US? If you live in Alambama, I'd expect my car would be given about the same route. I'll be calling BMWA again sometime this morning to get another update on the ship. Friday morning, the rep told me that it was in transit to the port exit. We'll see if it made it there.

    Pat,
Thanks a ton for the "Go To" message math; it sure helps to reach a referenced message.

    frances1,
I was also hesitant about buying the 325 wagon because of a perceived low luggage volume. However, I found the interior dimensions for its 48 cu ft to be arranged better to carry more than the 60 cu ft of my previous small wagon (less width, much more length, 1 inch less height). I also found that the gate does not intrude into the stuff at the rear gate's threshold so more can be piled up back there. The gate's separate opening glass is _so_ convenient for last minute arrangements or additions after the gate is closed.
You also have generous space around the spare tire (I have the full sized spare) for jumper cables, extra boots, small tools as well as about 5 inches between the top of spare tire and luggage floor for windshield sunshade, spare towel, warning triangle, etc. There is a lot of space between the front seats and folded rear seats for soft bag packing or car cover. The 48 cu ft packed more like 70+ cu ft.
And the car's handling did not change noticeably. I found that with 3 people and a full load, the 325xi had a rewarding amount of acceleration at 70mph. I had to escape a potential right-hand lane trap when the driver in the left lane did not want to let me out. It was hard to wipe the grin off my face after I out-accelerated him.

P.S. The cross braces for the roof rack are a precision piece of equipment and fit like a glove (with rubber grips). If you have the need, I highly recommend them; they install or remove is less than 2 minutes.

We had a half inch of rain last night and when I went to my car today, the passenger side mat was soaked. Most of the water was toward the outer edge, so I thought I might have left the door or window cracked but there were no water spots on the window or door panel. Anyone have any ideas as to cause or cure? The car is a y2k 328i approximately a year and a half old. Went through last year's rainy season without experiencing this problem.

I just bought the 325i sedan (without the sport package) and have been looking a BMW wheel options. I can get a good deal on a set of Star spoke M 17" wheels (BMW wheels catalog shows that these are for the 3-series) and was wondering if I'll have any suspension problems if I put these on my car even though I don't have sport suspension. The car came standard with the 16" wheels, but I just don't like the look of those wheels.

I am past the 2,000 mile marker as of yesterday and figured I'd write a short update. The car keeps driving smoother and faster. It's easy to get used to the incredible brakes and handling. The car begs to be driven very hard to its limits and I have been pushing it very hard and getting to know its limits better since the break-in at 1,200 miles. I had to brake hard on a couple of occasions while flying around tight curves - the ABS feel more like a tickling sensation compared to the heavy, abrupt pulsation that I've felt on other cars. I did not even for a moment think of letting off the brakes while the ABS was on - that's how natural the ABS feel. Oh, the car was absolutely composed slowing down by at least 50 miles into a tight curve with the ABS on. The brakes are just as good and even more assuring at triple-digit speeds. The DSC tends to kick in mostly when I hit a bump while cornering aggressively. There was, however a situation when a entered a corner too fast (probably kamikaze-style by most people's standards) and the DSC kicked in just enough to slow me down and keep me on my intended path instead of allowing me to fly off my line and into the sand that typically sits at the edge of the road. The power and torque above 3,000 RPMs are unbelievable in this car. You get a lot of smooth power anywhere from 3 to 6 K and especially above 3.5K where the peak torque kicks in and stays at near-peak for about 2K from 3.5 to 5.5K RPM's. The engine has this slightly metallic sound above 5K RPM's, which is almost intoxicating. As soon as you approach the upper end of the rev band in any other car that I've driven, the engine would sound like it's working much too hard. The 325 seems to like it a lot and it wants more of the same all the way to 6K, which is as far as I've gone so far. I'd typically turn off the stereo and roll down the window slightly at that engine speed and it just sounds like it wants to go higher. After all, BMW's philosophy is naturally-aspirated, free-revving engines, right?
On the downside, my coin holder jammed and a plastic-and-rubber piece fell off the wall behind the clutch. They both happened around 2K miles, must have been some late Y2K bugs :o)
I've had the car for over a month and my pulse still goes up in eager anticipation every time I approach the car with keys in hand. It still puts a big smile on my face. Even when I shut off the engine before I exit the car, I like to sit there and reminisce for a few seconds, smiling and thinking how lucky I am to have discovered the joys of driving in this incredible car.

I own a 99 323i sport. At 1k miles the A/c clutch melted, thought it was the TX heat but it was defective , my sellsman felt so bad(no fault of dealership) i got his new 528i to drive for 3 weeks awaiting the part, Moritz was great. Ever since then it has been flawless, no steering problems, roof, ect .. that u see posted typicalyon the board , and trust me i am picky...

Now at 20k my Turanza Er30 are getting close to the wear bars, no wonder the wear rating is 120 ... pretty soft to say the least , but they sure stick to the road. I am currently evaluating other tires.

overall the best car i have owned, hope it continues,

When calculating ED price, is the Dealer Handling and Destination (MACO?) charge to be included? Thanks
  • mfeldmanmfeldman Member Posts: 140
Good writeup. I passes 2k too and really like the feel of the car.

I may reconsider and get the steering change. THe road feel is ok, but it does seem to be light and be disturbed by bumps and grooves. This weekend I drove our accord wagon and the steering felt tighter. Reviews of the fis seem very positive on the e46 board, but that is a different group.

Now if I could just figure out how to deal with the pressure of the sport seat on my left thigh. A friend noticed the same thing but no solution yet.

P.S. Just when I thought the 330 was an indulgence, a neighbor came home with a new Porsche Turbo. A different league I guess!
  • postoakpostoak Member Posts: 537
Platypus, our most notable ED alumnus, paid $1650 over invoice, no MACO. Personally, I don't think MACO should ever be included in the calculation because it is charged only to dealers in high-volume areas. Thus, they can afford to make less profit on each individual vehicle. BUT, if you can't find a dealer who has to pay the MACO who will give you the deal you want, just go with one who doesn't have the MACO to deal with.

Also, remember it's the bottom line that is important. If a dealer INSISTS you must pay MACO and it is, say, $350, then offer $1300 over "invoice" -- it's the same deal.

Great post! Same here, My pulse goes up in eager anticipation walking up my driveway with keys in hand, It's like I almost leap into the front seat. One cool thing that I just noticed, when my tinted windows go down and the sun enters the car, the orange display for the radio and the climate control gets brighter to compensate for the increase in light, cool stuff. I hear ya, this years NBA finals is one of the best I've seen, very close matchup. I like what Shaq said about the Sixers: "They play a scrappy game, but they are very intense and have a lot of heart". It's funny seeing Iverson running around like a little possesed rat pulling amazing moves out of his *beep*. Kobe played great though, and Motumbo has his work cut out for him with Shaq, but I digress. :o)

New Porsche Turbo? That's some serious transportation. It's my dream car - I hope to own one some day too. The Boxster S seems very attractive and certainly reasonably priced when compared to a 911. If I were to spend 60 grand on a car, that would clearly be the car I'd choose. The M3 may be faster and handle better but as the Porsche ads say, "Drive one and you'll understand" :o)

As far as the left seat bolster, I am afraid there is no solution. I can feel it pressing against my thigh but it hasn't bothered me enough to look for solution. I hope you get used to it.

I am hoping my 325xi to be in by another week or so. Boy !!! it has been a loooong wait. But anyways, I have ordered a 6 CD changer along with it which will be installed at the Dealer. When I had ordered it that time the only option was 6 CD Changer in the Trunk. Now it can be mounted even in the Glove Box. I am now wondering what are the benefits / disadvantages in having it installed in the Glove Box. It seems like its gonna occupy the whole space of the Glove Box. Does anyone have any experience with it or suggestions ???
