Got my 330ci conv. in Aug and just passed 12K miles Engine is smoother than my 3 year olds butt. However the stick shift knob came off one time. Did anybody else have that problem? Dealership said they would take care of it but I was wondering if I'm too hard on it or not. Also the stock tires look like they have maybe 7k-8k miles left on them. Anybody else chewing up rubber like that? I'm in So. Fl. so that probably doesn't help.

I've been lurking in your forum for a few weeks now and I must say this is one of the most civil and informative ones I've seen at Edmunds. Anyway, sort of thinking ahead to the next car in a few years. Fun to dream, at least. In the mid-80's, I really wanted a 3-Series. But reality took over and things like mortgage payments, tuition and travel seemed more important. Plus, that "yuppie scum" image that people labeled Bimmer drivers with in the 80's didn't help. My wife and I have had a series of "transportation appliances" over the years, mostly Toyotas and Hondas. They have served us well and have been reliable. Luckily, my wife is also a "driver" who used to love her old VW Rabbit. Her current car is a 97 Acura Integra. Her dream car was always a Saab convertible. Saabs are fun to drive, but I haven't really read anything good about reliability and resale value. Yeah, I know that should have no place in "dream car" decisions, but it has to be a daily driver. Lately, the C-Series Mercedes has caught her eye. It got me to thinking that if we're jumping into that price category, we need to seriously check out the competition. The more I read about the 3-Series, the more I want to check it out. I haven't really seen a lot of bad stuff here at Edmunds. Plus (not that I put a lot of weight on it), Consumer Reports puts the 3-Series on their list of the top 10 reliable used cars. I want to get my wife in for a test drive. I think once she gets behind the wheel, she will be sold. Anyway, just wanted to say hi and that I really enjoy the chat.
  • luftig1luftig1 Member Posts: 23
been so civil, maybe too much so ! Lets try not to be, Saabs are quite nice, but do not handle as well as 3 series, some models are quite fast. The Chrysler, I mean Mercedes, are quite nice, certainly are good cars though seem to lack the "passion" for being driven hard like the 3 series, they are somehow more sedate and less athletic. Ok, that is my attempt at being less civil and flamming. They are all good cars, for me the 3 series is more fun to drive than any of the others and has been a true dream car to own.
  • dej0dej0 Member Posts: 36
Definately drive a 3 series. You will not regret it. Drive the other cars you mentioned also, I would even throw the Audi A4 (or new A4 convertible) onto your list. The 3 series handles, drives and shifts better than them all. My wife also loves to drive, and replaced her Miata with a 325i sedan. I drive our A4 as our daily driver, adn I love the car. However, given the choice when we both go out, I drive her car every chance I get. I know what you mean about car reputation, I was embarassed to tell our friends what we got. Once I explained that it actually did drive better than everything else we looked at, they all seemed to finally get it.

    Good luck and have fun.

I did the same thing to my shifter at CCC. I pushed it back in, and it hasn't come off yet. Your tire wear sounds normal. Average Z rated tires are only good for 20k, 25k if you really baby it. It looks like I'll be a little short of 20k.

If she likes to drive, she'll really like the bmw, whatever image it has.
  • gary330cigary330ci Member Posts: 9
Something else to consider is the Saab 9-3 will undergo a body style change at the end of this year (which certainly won't help resale values later on). Personally, I've always liked Saabs (I also own a 9-5 which is a great car). But when given a choice I'll always drive the BMW because it offers the most satisfying driving experience.

There was a discussion on this board within the last week (I think) about how long one would have to wait for their car once it arrived stateside.

Some of you may remember too that I had previously shared my frustration over how long it was taking to get my car. Here's an update--nothing new really (and incredibly!).

Arrived stateside 3/27, PDI work-order (supposedly) completed 4/2, as of today (4/18) nothing new, still in NJ at the VPC! Repeated calls to BMW Customer Relations (1-800-831-1117, option "3") reveal a different story each time. Bottom line, do not trust BMW Customer Relations to tell you when you will get your car, they don't know! They really don't know anything other than your vehicle's status code (or whatever it is) as shown on their computer screen.

My salesman told me today the his dealer's rep at port told him that my car was waiting for a part. Funny thing though, he/she couldn't tell him what the part was (hmmmmmm!).

My car has been stuck in NJ for more than 3 weeks (a fate worse than death for a human--just kidding all you Garden Staters!) with no sign as to when it will leave. Does anyone else have a car there right now and are you experiencing the same problem?

Regarding how long it will take to get your car once it arrives in port, you never know, it could be quite a while, as with me!
  • dave330idave330i Member Posts: 893
If it's 325, then it could be waiting for front strut replacement. Sorry hear about the long wait. Just hang in there.
  • tenet1tenet1 Member Posts: 354
Maybe you should should check to see if there was damage to your car during shipping. Ask the dealer, they are obligated to tell only if you ask. Hope thats not the case but you should find out.

Dave330i - is there an issue with these? Do tell!
  • phatratpakphatratpak Member Posts: 12
Hey guys, well like everyone else I guess, I've been reading tons of stuff from Edmunds (great freakin website) and have become enamored with the latest iteration of the 3-series, gotta love those lights. Now here's the car I'm thinking of getting, 325xi, with premium package, steptronic (I'm no good with manual) and split rear folding seats. My issue is I DON'T WANT OR CARE about the Wood Trim in the Prem.pckg. So do you guys think I could negotiate either free or a sweet deal on either xenon lights or getting those clear turn lights? Your input is much appreciated.
  • dave330idave330i Member Posts: 893
Someone posted while back some of the 2002 325 received bad struts. Can't remember the details, but I believe it was mostly the Xi models.
  • vkwheelsvkwheels Member Posts: 218
Wood trim separately is $500 & xenons are $700, but I dunno whether or how the dealer would do it. There was info on how to install the aluminum trim on the www.e46fanatics.com website under FAQs accessories & aftermarket. BTW, that's a cool website too.

DAve330i--vaguely recall that, yeah it pertained to xi's.
  • wrjohnsonpghpawrjohnsonpghpa Member Posts: 53
Actually, I believe the recall (actually "campaign") on the 325 that was discussed previously had to do with rear brakes, didn't it? I was told, however, that this only affected the "xis" (plural). I was also told that this wasn't the part that my car was being held for.
  • wrjohnsonpghpawrjohnsonpghpa Member Posts: 53
I don't know why I did this, but after my earlier post where I whined about how long it was taking to get my car, I called BMW NA Customer Relations one last time. They told me that my car was (supposedly) released to the carrier (i.e., loaded on the truck) today, 4/18! You all should know, though, that I was told this once before by my salesman, on 3/29 in fact, two days after it arrived in port. Soooooo, I take this news with a bit of skepticism.

What is painfully obvious, however, is that nobody knows what the h*** they are talking about! Early this morning I'm told that it's waiting for a mysterious part that is supposed to arrive over the weekend, and early this afternoon I'm told that it was shipped today!

Needless to say, I'll believe it when I'm driving it home. It is disconcerting that you can't get accurate information out of them.

A word of advise to those of you who have recently ordered a new bimmer. Do not check its status on the Owner's Circle section of the BMWUSA web-site and do not call either your salesman or BMW NA to find out what its status is. Upon placing your order you should think that you will take delivery in 4 months and if your salesman calls you and tells you that it is in sooner, accept it and be happy!

Hey all. I just wanted to let you know that I won't be posting again until next week. I'm going to California (where there is an over-abundance of BMW 3 Series) to visit a friend from tomorrow until Tuesday. Have a great weekend to all! Hopefully it'll be some good driving weather!

I was in email contact with David Sharp (anyone who visits bimmer.org or e46fanatics would know of him as Ausgang) when I ordered my car. David wrote a pretty good article in last February's Roundel about what happens when a car hits the VPC. He seems to by an authority on the subject. Below are some quotes from one of his emails to me in reponse to an unfounded fear I had that something bad would happen to my car in transport. Hopefully this will help ease your concerns and/or find out what is going on.

"if there is ANY damage to your car, the law requires that the dealer be informed. This is usually done by e-mail, and if there is no damage ----- which is the case with 99.6% of the cars ----- there won't be a report... Also by law, if you ask the dealer for a disclosure report of any in-transit damage, they are required to provide you with one if any such report exists... I think you're worrying about a non-issue. The most common damage is a nicked wheel, which they replace at the VPC if it happens. In the rare case where a car 'gets loose' in the ship and needs body work/panel replacement, the car is 'removed from availability'. Basically, it disappears from the system and is used by BMWNA and not sold to the public..."

and the best advice of all... "Stop worrying and start dreaming." :-)
  • kominskykominsky Member Posts: 850
One other thing I just thought about. My dealership faxed me a copy of a form titled "Vehicle Inquiry - Production/Processing" about a week before I took delivery (the day after it left the VPC). On it there is a section labelled "VPC Disclosure:" If there is any damage found or created at VPC, it would show up here. Ask your dealer for a copy.

Since this is such a civil and wonderful group of folks sharing experiences with/about their fantastic BMW's, may I offer this to all.

I have been reading and posting to this board for two years. It seems to have become customary for those with Steptronic's to apologize for that choice. There is no need to do so. We know that 60-80% are sold that way and they are all great cars. Some people here have a strong opinions for the 5 speed (me included), but don't let us make you hide in the background. What makes this place great is the diverse opinions we all share.
  • carwatchcarwatch Member Posts: 38
My 330Ci arrived 4/11 in NJ and got to the VPC on 4/15 and arrived at my dealer today. Unfortunately, I can't pick it up until Saturday because I'm travelling.

You should really get the VPC report from the dealer just to be sure the car has not been damaged. I believe it could take 3 weeks to get a part for your car especially if it's a "campaign" or a "recall". The parts go very quickly. A boat arrives from Bremerhaven almost every week and they could have been waiting for parts via those boats because I do not think they ship it by air.

To be fair, BMWNA(the 1-800 number) has been very accurate with my car's progress and status. I placed my order on 2/23 and I'm picking it up on 4/20. THAT'S JUST 2 MONTHS! It really depends on the production schedule, the transport, and the VPC inspection. If everything falls into place, then you'll get your car quickly.

I like the Steptronic, I don't want another primary car with a manual. But there have been times that I wish I had more control over the shifting. Steptronic gives me that choice. No regrets that I didn't get a manual.
  • twoof1twoof1 Member Posts: 308
I have never, nor will I ever feel the need to apologize for buying a 3 series with step trans. I have had my share of manuals including most recently a 2000 Z3. Trust me the Step trans does not make nearly as much difference as the nay-sayers would have you believe. Remember, I have owned BOTH the Z3 had the same 2.5 motor as my 325. Besides 90% of the manual drivers out there can't shift nearly as fast as I can in manual mode with the Step which more than makes up for any slight parasitic power loss from the Step trans. I have driven many manu-matic transmission cars and the BMW Steptronic is the best I have driven and is the best of both worlds particulary if you drive in a lot of traffic like I do here in so. California. The Step trans in a 3 series is an excellent compliment to a great car!!
Having said that the only thing I really miss is the sweet feeling of sliding into your favortie set of twisties and dropping a perfect heel-toe 3-2 to set up a corner. Yes I can come close with my Step, but nothing matches that perfect moment of harmony.

"She had a bum on her head and arms in her hair. She was no coherent and did not no name." Typos at their best!

BTW guys, I was away from the board for a while and there were like 1000 messages waiting for me . . . think you all could slow down a bit? Please? :D

Also, hows the little one brave? Gotta be coming up on 3 months as I recall (a month youger than mine)? How's the kids like the ride in the back of the 3er (to keep on topic)?

Jason is 3 months and 10 days now and he's doing great. He's put on almost 10 lbs since he was born and we'll have to put him on a diet soon :o) He's been very healthy so far - no fevers or ear infections. He started sleeping through the night the day he turned 2 months and he does about 7-9 hours a night now. Every new day is exciting (he's a lot of fun in the morning!!) and the way he smiles, he gives you everything - he has no idea what anxiety and fear is!! Unfortunately, the mom is not doing that great. She is a little depressed about having to go back to work in 10 days and she is dreading the moment when she'll have to leave her baby with someone else (even if that's our parents :o)). He loves riding in a car (I think most babies do) and he's never complained vocally about the stiffer suspension of the sport pack. The only complaints I've heard from the back seat is my wife complaining that I am accelerating too fast :o)

I just made another trip to my local dealer to check out the 325i again. Some of my observations are: the leatherette looks just about the same to me as the leather. I didn't get a chance to sit on it, but it's not bad. I thought the standard radio sounded very good, AM stations came in clearly and FM sounded great. I was a little taken aback by finding that there aren't any cup holders for the rear seats. I know for a "driving machine" this isn't a big issue, but my present car doesn't have any cup holders and I'm really getting tired of holding my cold, or hot, drinks between my legs. The front has two holders, but if you have the arm rest, you have to raise it to get to the second one. And I also noticed that the gas peddle is more to the left than I'm used to; has this been a problem for anyone? Just my thoughts cents

You mentioned about how much your son enjoys sleeping in the car while you are driving around. It reminds me of my daughter when she was at your son's age, she would go to sleep only if we put her in the car and drive around, but as soon as we stopped she would wake up and cried until the car was in motion again. For a while I had to drive around my neighborhood every night like a crazy man just to get her to go to sleep. I hope you have a better luck than me. I did not even own a Bimmer back then.
  • kominskykominsky Member Posts: 850
cup holders; NO ONE, not even my boss (wife) is allowed to have food or drink in my car so the lack of cupholders is not a problem for me personally.

gas pedal; the pedal is closer to the brake than on most cars. I assume it was done purposely to facilitate heel-toe'ing.

Okay, now I know I'm gonna get razzed on this one, but I'm gonna ask anyway.

I've heard the term double clutching numerous times. Can somebody describe the process in easy to understand and visualize terms?

It's Friday, so that is my reason for a dumb question. That's my story and I'm stickin to it.
  • pap5pap5 Member Posts: 144
This is a technique to upshift or downshift a cold or balky gearbox, or one with worn syncros. The way I've done it (somebody correct me if this is not school technique) is to pause midway thru the shift, i.e. with the lever between gears, let out the clutch momentarily, press the clutch back in, blip the throttle to get the revs back where they should be, move the lever into the new gear, then let out the clutch to complete the shift.

I can't imagine that the dealer or factory can switch-out the wood trim from the PP for the xenons, or any other option. Remember also, the more gymnastics you ask the dealer to do, the less incentive he is going to have to give you a deal. Its the "Hassle Factor".

Like you, I prefer the silver trim - wish it was real aluminum, like Audi's - in a car with Black interior. I think the wood looks beautiful with the tan. I hate gray interior, in any incarnation, so I can't even comment on that.

Are there any items of the PP you can live without? If you order just the power seats and the sunroof - IMO the best items in the PP - you can save $800 over the cost of the PP. That pays for the xenons, with $100 left over to put toward buying the armrest aftermarket, and installing it yourself. I think some on this Board say it cost them about $250. If you want the dealer to install it, figure a couple hours at probably $60-70 per hour. (Anybody out there had an armrest installed by the dealer)? Do you really think you'll miss the trip computer, the funky rear view mirror, and that passenger side mirror that automatically tilts down in reverse?

I decided to forgo the PP, so thatI can afford the SP, xenons and the HK stereo.
  • allanoallano Member Posts: 175
Good up to the point where you let out the clutch with the shift lever between gears. At that point, blip (if you prefer) the accelerator so that you spin up the gear set on the engine side of the transmission, then continue the shift as you mentioned (push in the clutch, shift, push the accelerator and let out the clutch).
I believe you will be better served by holding the accelerator at the desired engine speed rather than blipping - you don't have to press (blip) the accelerator twice. It takes a little more practice and mental effort in the busy environment of shifting but the reward of a smooth shift is far greater.
BTW, Double clutching is used primarily when down-shifting and only rarely when up-shifting. When up-shifting, the gear-set on the engine side needs to spin down to match the speed of the next 'higher' gear on the differential side.
  • riezriez Member Posts: 2,361
I always thought it was essentially to break a single gear change into two parts.

First part: Engage clutch and shift from present gear into neutral.

Second part: Engage clutch and shift from neutral into the desired gear.

Normally done with cold or balky shifter, worn syncros, or for older tranny that has all or some gears non-syncronized. I do it a lot when turning right or left from a road with higher speed onto a road with lower speed. Or when I want to slow down for a stoplight ahead but I believe I won't have to come to a complete stop (i.e., the light will change from red to green before I reach the intersection).
  • vkwheelsvkwheels Member Posts: 218
Saw a picture of your stroumphf-mobile (sp?) & it is beautiful.
  • allanoallano Member Posts: 175
I agree with the reason for double-clutching: assist worn synchos and troublesome transmission but dividing the shift into two distinct parts does not inherently help the transmission. The reason for double clutching is to bring the speeds of the two gears to be engaged as close as possible so the synchos don't have to work very hard.
The process may seem to fall into two parts as pap5 indicated but those two actions should merge together: clutch petal down, shift into neutral, clutch petal up, press and hold accelerator petal at engine speed for next gear, clutch petal down, shift to next gear, clutch petal up, done. Holding engine speed near that needed for the next gear minimizes car lurch at the final clutch petal up.
As you can tell, I'm not a fan of blipping the throttle. If you are going to double-clutch, you should develop the skill of being able to get close to a desired engine speed with your accelerator petal.
  • allanoallano Member Posts: 175
As an after-thought, the 325 seems to like a straight downshift into lower gears (except first) rather than double-clutched downshifts. When not rushed, a straight downshift is silky smooth. Except for first gear, a double-clutched downshift produces a slight tick of the shift lever, as if gear teeth hit each other. Also, not having to double-clutch allows me to concentrate on matching engine speed to the next gear.

On the serious note: I feel like I got fed a bunch a bull by BMWNA today. I called to check out where my car is. They could not tell me if my car was still at the docks or at VPC or the way to Houston. They place blame on the personal handling the manual process. Anyway, I then ask how do the cars come off the boat. He told me first on, last out. Now I figured that my car did not get loaded in Bremerhaven but in Antwerp. So I figure my car should get off before all the Bremerhaven cars. He then said that my car could held up with the EPA. The answer get more and more created. So, you are not the only on going through this. Our cars were probably on the same boat. If this is of any consolation, you will probably get your car before me, mine has to come to Texas.

I recall about a week ago there was speculation about lumbar support being included in either the PP or SP version of the 325 built after March but I don't recall what the final verdict was. If anyone knows I would appreciate hearing.

It looks like the 101 freeway in Santa Barbara will be closed for a few hours tomorrow while some truly stupid number of BMWs fruitlessly attempt to make the Hope Avenue exit. Last year was out of control and this year I expect we'll enjoy numerous visits from CHP and local police and some hand delivered documents from the city on Monday. God only knows what the surface streets are going to look like. May-be they could start charging for it!

I'll be over there grabbing all the freebies from the nice folks from Meguiar's and misc other parts. I think I'll also get roped into doing the Car and Key memory clinic again. This basically involves being dragged around a few hundred 3 series (some 5s too) and changing their owners car and key preferences. GREAT !!

See you all there tomorrow, look for me in the 'doctors' white coat.

"She is a little depressed about having to go back to work in 10 days"

Yeah, I've heard that one (although my wife had 6 months off so she's not due back until the end of May).

anyway, great to hear all is well. Our Jacob will be 4 months next week, and all is well (one cold, but no fever) other than we think is starting to get teeth. What's a little scary though is that Jacob also started to sleep though the night at 2 months (almost to the day). Unfortunately, we think he's ready for solids, and he now gets up once to nurse at night. we'll probably start rice cereal this week. they grow up so fast!

Thanks for the link! Found it very amusing. We need to keep our sense of humor about us, don't we?

Told my salesman yesterday morning that BMWNA said that my car had been released to the carrier (called them again yesterday before talking to my salesman to make sure they'd give me the same story twice--which would be unusual--when they did I called him). Guess what? That was news to him! He said he'd check it out and get back to me. Haven't heard from him yet (Saturday afternoon)! Maybe the owner's kid's taking it to the spring formal this weekend. If so, maybe he'll Fabreeze(sp?) it for me!

No doubt it will be ready for pick-up next Wednesday, the first day of my mini- (through Saturday) vacation, making it, therefore, impossible for me to get it until a week from Monday, at the earliest.

They say patience is a virtue, well...no one's ever accused me of being virtuous.

For me, the 19th was my limit. I had dropped my car off in London on March 18th and figured that there was not way this process could take 6-8 weeks. Well, what can I say. I don't like to call BMWNA, they seem clueless. I guess I could hold out another week. If I got it by Friday, I would have 14-18 year testosterone hanging all over my car at the church mentoring program that I head. I can wait another week, maybe.

I guess Shipo and ButMyWife are trying to keep their vehicles under 100 mph and 4000 rpm round about now. I got to do ED again.

My dealer said it takes 3-4 days to build, about a week to get it to port, about a month to ship, & once it arrives around 5 days for them to get it. I'm in soCal, going through Shelly BMW in Buena Park. I'm not much of a resource but this is the info I've received.

sorry the picture quality isn't as good as it could be.

Bimmerfest was unreal. It was amazing to see so many great looking 3 series (and 5s and at least 2 sevens). We (some friends and I) watched a convoy of about 40-50 just M3s all haul [non-permissible content removed] onto the freeway, along with about a few hundred others. I was stunned to see people come down from Canada and Washington state - with their cars !!!! See you all next year??!!
