hpman: We stayed in a B&B in Levanto, parked the car at the train station for the day, visited Cinqueterre, and returned the same day. I would not have felt comfortable leaving my car at the train station overnight. While gasing up in Levanto we asked a "tourist police" about secure parking. He kindly drove us to a garage but it turned out the following day was a holiday and they wouldn't have been open for us to retrieve our car. This might be an option for you. I'm busy running a golf tournament this weekend so I'm not sure when I'll get some pics up. I'll do it asap.

Cnorthrup: Thanks for the key programming url. Now I'll have time to think about what I want programmed as it ships over.

leenelsonmd: Remember, "y'all" is singular and "all y'all" is the plural. The pluperfect subjunctive is difficult even for a southerner to pronounce and was banned about the time Elvis hit the airwaves.

BTW: My favorite sign in Germany: "gros fahrte verboten." I don't know what it means but I feel confident I would back it in a referendum.

    Thanks, ButMyWife

I've noticed an increase in tire noise as they wear (sport pack w/Conti's). The exhaust has also gotten a little louder over time (a good thing, IMHO). Other than that, everything seems as quiet as the day I got the car. BTW, I have an '01 330Ci w/17,000 miles.

A couple of days ago the WSJ had an article about how more Americans are flying to other cities to buy their cars and shopping on the Internet. I think they used some Chevy and Ford truck examples and even a Honda Accord. They specifically cited Dallas in several examples of having to pay up to several thousand more dollars than other cities. Now dealers are not just competing within their own cities, but with other parts of the country. No mention of German European delivery though.

I think this is a good thing. Paying sticker just plain makes me boil - on principle alone. Anyone remember the late '70's and early '80's when Japenese cars all had markups OVER sticker. Talk about arrogant. They still make good cars, but look what happened to their ecomony.
  • kominskykominsky Member Posts: 850
My wife (GF, then) and I were out looking at cars for her in '84. We checked out an Accord and were very impressed. When I told the salesman we were ready to talk price, he politely told us that the price was on the sticker. I said, "yeh, uh, no really... let's talk". He again told us that the cars were going for sticker price. We walked away and she ended up getting a Buick Skyhawk... that may sound really bad, but considering she was trading in a Chevette, it was quite a step up. :-)

    ButMyWife,

And I thought our favorite sign was "Ausfahrte", however, your "gros fahrte verboten" is WAY better (funnier). ;-)

    BMW323is,

In 1978, I was looking for a new Camaro in Los Angeles, the car was just a basic Camaro, with a 305, Automatic, crank windows and a fair stereo. It had a sticker of something like $7,700, and a "Dealer Markup" of $1,300! Needless to say, I was a little reluctant to buy for OVER sticker, and I said so. The salesman then offered to trim the markup by $300, leaving ONLY a $1,000 markup. I kept my Challenger instead. ;-)

A salesman where I bought my Steel Blue 325i said the same thing...what's with that?!?
This salesman made several comments I didn't like so I didn't buy the car from him.

A friend of mine called it "gun metal blue", certainly not a chick color.

I've had nothing but compliments on the color of my car. My only regret/disappointment is seeing minivans and Ford Taurus' with similar colors!

I want to get a BMW that will give me a good resale value in two years, so I can move up to the new 5 series. So, should I save some money over new, and buy a 2000 or 2001 3 Series, 5 Series? Or, should I buy a new 3 Series, or 5 Series

Any newer car you buy will lose thousands of dollars in two years. Personally, I would never buy a newer model car with the intent of selling it in two years. I might buy a 5-7 year old car if a totaled my car and needed something to drive. Even then, I wouldn't buy a BMW but rather a less expensive car.

Put your cash and payments in a money market account or CD for two years and you'll easily be able to afford more options on your 5 er. Don't let your emotions rule your financial decisions! I waited over 2 years between wanting a BMW and taking delivery.

which would give the most value from the needs I have listed

In my opinion, you haven't listed your "needs" but rather your desires. There is a difference.

I did my first advanced driving school this Thursday. New Hampshire Int'l Speedway is a tight, medium speed course with dramatic elevation changes. The track is unique in that it is the only one in the Northeast that uses both a road course and a high speed oval section, a lot like the Indianapolis F1 track. I was in group 4 (novice) and most of our classroom sessions were focused on basics: turn in, apex, track out, connect the dots, understeer, oversteer, dropping the wheels, etc. Our classroom instructor has been racing and instructing for 15 years and winning 6 (that's SIX!!!) SCCA championships. He is one of the most intelligent and eloquent persons I've ever met. My driving instructor has been racing in BMWCCA events for 7 years and instructing for 3. The school is very hands-on - classroom sessions are followed by 20-25 min runs with an instructor in the car next to you at all times. My driving instructor took me on the track in his track 328is which was absolutely great - I enjoyed riding with him as much as driving myself.

Unfortunately, we had the worst luck with the weather - it kept pouring all day and some sections of the track had standing water, which was very dangerous. The worst puddle was located right where you go into the straightway where you'd be most aggressive on the throttle in dry weather. My first run I went hydroplanning for about 10 ft but luckily I was going straight and the car recovered well. The track conditions kept getting worse: 4 other cars weren't that fortunate: 2 cars (a gorgeous M coupe and an E30 M3) hit the wall after a tailspin at about 50 mph and got damaged pretty bad. 2 other cars (E36 M3's) spun off the track and sustained minor damage to the air dam and front spoiler. Yet 3-4 more cars spun off but got away with sand and grass on the wheels only. All of this happened within 2 runs (~ 1/2 hour). The organizers called off the school at that point and some people left. 10 min later, the rain slowed down and they determined that they could seal off the puddles with cones. We were back for a last run of the day but some people decided not to run. I spent the last 1 1/2 hours of the day flagging in heavy rain and I got completely soaked, esp. my feet.

Rain and crashes notwithstanding, I loved being out on the track and I felt very comfortable with my 325i. I learned a lot about car placement, corner setup, exit speed, passing, and tracking in general. I also learned that I drive way too aggressive for my skillset. As my driving instructor put it at the end of the day, "You drive much better than a novice but your skillset is at 5 and you're trying to drive like someone with a skillset of 10." It was a fair assessment and as much as I loved catching some oversteers and getting the back end to come out slightly while exiting corners, I have a lot of learning to do before I am entirely comfortable doing that.

FWIW, I think $115 for a full day of school with experienced instructors of this caliber is a steal!!

Steel blue is an awesome color, very interesting, not at all like the domestic blues. In fact, in sun or clouds, it has an excellent deep shine. I'm only afraid I'll tire of it, but so far so good. And, no, my friends don't think I'm driving a "chick" car.

I agree pretty much with mshuckar above. Look at Edmunds Total Cost To Own and notice the depreciation in the first couple of years.

If you want a 2004 5 series you can:

    1) Invest and wait
    2) Buy a 98-99 model car - I would try the 3 series since it is a lower value car and its depreciation over the next two years will be less than a 5 series of the same age.
    3) Buy my car -- I am going to sell it as soon as I can order a 2003 3 series. hehe :-)

I agree with your plan though, I would try to wait until 04 to get the 5 series.

Why do you want the 5 instead of the 3? Is it for the family or mostly just for you?

That would be great!! Everyone is very friendly and there's a nice atmosphere of camaraderie at these events. I am planning on doing both Lime Rock in CT and NHIS next year. Lime Rock will be much closer for you if you're still down in NJ.

I've had my 2002 325xi for a couple of months now and am really enjoying it. Friday morning my wife saw we had a flat tire in the front passenger side. We had it "patched" at the local service station. I left a message for my dealer today about any type of warranty coverage by either BMW or Michelin. I'm assuming there isn't for a "punctured" flat tire, but didn't know if anyone had any thoughts or experience with this type of problem.

I just finished my first application of Klasse All-in-One. My first thought was "This is too easy, it's not doing anything", but I could feel the change in smoothness of the surfaces. This stuff is incredibly easy to apply and the best part-you don't get any chalky white smears on the trim! Just apply to everything and it wipes right off.

I used the included microfiber applicator pad and purchased 3 microfiber towels for wiping off. I also followed one of the tips and used a quick detailer spray on the pad with each dab of All-in-One.

Thanks shipo and others for the recommendation; I'll have to trust you guys that it lasts as long as you say since it seems almost to easy to work that well.

I had a really close call at NHIS during O'Fest 94. I was reeling in a friend's 540i Sport with my M6 on the old Bryar part of the course. We crested the hill right before that tight downhill left(can't recall the corner number)only to find a student who had slowed to a near stop. I was certain that my 6er was going to wind up in my buddy's trunk but I stopped just in time.

too many posts! aarggh...between work and traveling, haven't had much time to post my thoughts and ideas. Betsy IV (325i, PP, Cold-wx package, xenon, STEP, mighty steel grey) aleady has ~7000 miles on her and she looks as beautiful as ever! She has some war scars, though. A couple of door dings on the passenger side and the first-aid container door broke off. Oh well, I guess I'll have to run over to Schaal and have them pour me a cold Bitburger and order me a new one! Ahhh, life is tough....btw, wanted to congratulate everyone on their new bimmers! If you're ever in my neck of the woods, Trier-Luxemburg border, give me a ring.

I'm about to leave my current job in less than a month (I'm starting to refer to this upcoming event as my early-mid-life journey of self-discovery :-) and will be enjoying my first summer off in over 15 years. I'm planning to go to Germany in early July to visit some friends in Stuttgart and Frankfurt and to pick up a ED 530i for my father.

So here's the crazy idea. If anyone in the DC area is interested in realizing a $2500-3000 ED savings in exchange for covering my airfare from the east coast, I would be willing to pick up your ED Bimmer and do a same-day Harms drop-off in Munich on your behalf. I speak German, I've done an ED before so I know the drill, and I have a demonstrated ability to keep a new Bimmer below the recommended break-in speed and RPMs ;-)

Since I'll be picking up a car for my father, I've done some investigation into the logistics with my dealer and it can be done. Although I haven't thought through all the added complexities of setting up something similar with a 3rd party, I think it's do-able. If anyone in the DC area is interested, drop me an e-mail and we can investigate it together.
  • shiposhipo Member Posts: 9,148
Somebody asked me a similar question a few days ago about doing a 3rd party ED pickup, and I told him (maybe erroneously) that BMW would only release the car to the actual person that was buying the car. What method have you figured out that will circumvent that delivery requirement?

    Best Regards,
    Shipo
  • bmw323isbmw323is Member Posts: 410
Thought the ED process could only be completed by the titled owner. I've not done ED before, but they must check ID when picking up the car.
  • derprofiderprofi Member Posts: 250
...I will be listed on the PO and all other paperwork as a co-purchaser, which is what matters to the ED center. I may contribute a token $1 to the purchase price just in case :-) Once the car hits the dealer the car will be titled in Virginia in both of our names, at which point Pops will take delivery and then drop by the DMV to have my name removed from the title.
  • shiposhipo Member Posts: 9,148
Ahh, now I understand. Are you going to take the 530i to Stuttgart and Frankfurt? If you are, don't get too spoiled by the 5er. ;-)

In my case, maybe it is just age, however, as much as I loved my 328i (and I did), I found myself loving the 530i even more (while I had it, that is), and am waiting anxiously for it to appear here State side.

Sorry about the delay, I must have missed your post late last night, I just now saw it when I was looking back for another post.

As for the $189 doc fee, that dosen't sound too bad, it seems to me that I paid $250 over at Prestige in 1999 for my 328i, which makes the $189 a little more attractive. That said, I am sure that Park Avenue has at least a little profit built into that number, just not enough to make me fuss about it. ;-)

    Best Regards,
    Shipo
  • derprofiderprofi Member Posts: 250
Yes I'll probably take the 530i to Stuttgart, stay there a day or so, and then drive it to Frankfurt for drop-off before stopping in to spend a few days with my friends. I have no doubt I would be thrilled with the 5-er, if it weren't for the fact that this particular one will lack a 3rd pedal. Not that my loyalty would ever falter, of course! I'll take my broken-in 330i over just about anything short of an M :-)

What color is that Bimmer. Is that the new grey-green metallic. If so that's the color of my car...very unique color for a Bimmer.
  • hgeyerhgeyer Member Posts: 188
I had a similar plan (except that I was going to keep my day job). One other point to consider is that by buying the car and bringing it back, you're selling it here as a used car. This means that the buyer will probably be unable to get "new car" financing terms and rates and will have to settle for less-desirable used car financing.

IMHO, your best target market is to bring back a 7 series (if you can stand being seeing alive in one) or a M-3/5 and target high income/net worth customers who don't necessarily need to take out a car loan.
  • derprofiderprofi Member Posts: 250
I sure would be nice to do ED pickups for a living :-) but I just figured I'd try to offset my airfare by helping someone get a better deal than they'd ever negotiate on a US-delivery car. No way am I trying to finance a car up-front and take my chances selling it. I'm just offering to be the pick-up and drop-off guy.

Nice photos. Did you get the five speed? For me, it is a big regret. I should have did what Dave330i said, "Teach my mother-in-law to drive a manual". Believe me the next Bimmer will be a 5 or 6 speed,no doubt. My 3er is fun, I have this permanent smile on fun. My wife keeps asking I am having fun??? I think that the brochure is wrong, the 325i step seems like the 0 to 60 time is less than 8 secs. I still laugh at when I did my delivery at Momentum, my dealer looked at mileage and smiled saying,"you did a lot of driving in Europe!" I thank the entire group, you have all been helpful in my car purchase process. Next Bimmer I get, I'll have to contact Postoak to get a better deal. How many of the Houston contigency are members of BMWCCA? maybe we can meet at an event.

I think that was Turn 6 (The Bowl turn).
  • brave1heartbrave1heart Member Posts: 2,698
    - This time I was much better prepared: I brought a notepad and a pen and headed for a walk on the course as soon as I passed the technical inspection and I unloaded my trunk. I had the opportunity to walk it twice and take notes before we got out and that made a huge difference.

    - I bumped off rides from other drivers so I'd see the course at speed. Everyone except for one pompous guy was very helpful.

    - I got a ride in an E46 M3 (only 5K miles on it). This car handles incredibly. I saw for sure that the tach was > 8K RPM's at one point!! I also got a ride in an E36 M3 and they are both so fast off the start, they almost turned my stomach upside down. I loved riding in these cars as much as I enjoyed driving mine. When you are a passenger, you can actually relax a lot more and think about the course. When you drive on the track, you don't see nearly as much.

    - Pretty much all 3-series (excl. the M's) with street tires are in one class. Other than mine, there was only one other E46 325. We were running at 94-95 sec on our best runs which I think was at mid-pack or better (the results get posted on the website in a few days). I didn't see any 3-series below 94 but that's not to say there weren't any. It seems that the 330's did not have a substantial advantage over the 325, although the sample may not be statistically representative.

    - Most stock M3 on street tires were running a couple of seconds faster (92-93), and those with racing tires were at about 86 - i.e. in this type of events, the tires make a much bigger difference than the size of the motor.

    - I am very happy to be able to run with the caravan in my second event. As with anything else, I reach my peak pretty fast but unfortunately I plateau fast as well (my last 5 runs were in the 95-96 range). I hope that instructors' feedback will help me improve further.

    - I managed to chirp my 325's tires upshifting into third for the first time!! The fact that they have < 4 mm of tread left on the outside grooves probably helps ;o)

After the car warms and is turned off, is it hard to start in humid weather? If have a single-coil ignition system on your 318, I would check its distributor cap. Take someone with you when warming the car, stop at a convenient location and turn off the car. Lift the hood and have one person look at the engine while the other person cranks the car. Look around the distributor cap for electrical arcs (sparks). If you see arcs, replace the distributor cap and rotor -- its pretty inexpensive.
  • butmywifebutmywife Member Posts: 81
kdshapiro: Yes, it's the greygreen metallic. I, too, love the color. Ever notice how it can look bluish in certain light and grey too?

seivwrig: Yeah, I got the 5 speed. All five of my cars have been manuals 'cause I just like to drive that way. I also got the premium package and glad that I did. If I had it to do over I would have tried to get the sport seats but not the sport pacakge---I don't like the looks of the sports steering wheel and don't think I'm sophisticated enough to enjoy the sport suspension.
Did you keep your Euro license plate? If so, what are you doing with it?

    Thanks, ButMyWife

I got both of my euro plates. One sits in the back window of my car. The other one will get placed in my workout/computer/junk room. It is really hard to keep the car at the speed limit. But I have enjoyed the car, but I think I enjoyed ED more. Just picking a car up at BMW's facilities in Munich and driving the autobahn. I recommend to anyone, that is able, to do the ED experience.

Hey derprofi, if you find a way to circumvent the whole identification thing during an ED pickup. I might have to quit my day job and fly the friendly skies with you. I can pickup a car and drive to Antwerp or Bremerhaven for a dropoff. I'll even drive slow, to minimize damage from flying debris.

Loved the photos and the witty commentary! I'm not sure what was more spectacular - the scenery or your new car. As long as your name is on the BMW paperwork and the title, even if someone else's name is on there as well, you can pick up the car solo without the other person being present. Wouldn't hanging out in Munich and driving Bimmers on the Autobahn for a living be a wonderful thing? :-)

What's the best "applicator" to use when applying Klasse to the car? I usually use old T-Shirts (I use a "fresh" old T shirt every time). I also bought some 3M Imperial Hand Glaze. I plan to use the 3M on the car first, then apply the Klasse polish.

Hi, I owned a 2001 325i and I recently try lexol product (cleaner and conditioner) on my car. I wonder if it's ok to use lexol on the dashboard and inside door panel. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.
  • ddblueddblue Member Posts: 117
Lexol leather cleaner and conditioner should only be used on the leather part of the door panels (armrest, middle portion), not on the top inner panel (vinyl/plastic) or the bottom pocket portion. And do not use it on the dashboard. That is plastic. I use Son-of-a-Gun vinyl protectant on those plastic/vinyl portions.

Klasse recommends using a microfiber applicator pad and a microfiber polishing cloth. If you order from Classic Motoring in Florida you will receive an applicator pad at no charge with your order. Complete instructions on how to use the Klasse products will also be included with your order.
