My new 325xi has a clear liquid in the windshield washer resovoir. Is this just plain water? Would it be ok to add the blue windshield washer solvent?

i think you have bigger difference to worry about between the coupe and the sedan than a slight difference in wind noise... :)

which one do you WANT? and get the tranny you want too ('specially since you want a stick.. :) )

My 325i is about to hit 3K miles and I was wondering what type of synthetic oil you all have been using to refill that which has burned off during the break in period? I suppose you could just head up to the local auto shop and by brand "X"...am i mistaken?

I posted a couple of weeks ago that BMW finally has a fix (2 parts) for the notchy gas pedal and I was having the new parts installed. Well when I showed up to have the parts installed (along with my inspection I) they said the parts were not in and they had to re-order through a special procedure and it was VIN# specific. I now have the service scheduled for next Wed. 8/21. The only good thing that came out of the experience was getting a 330ia as a loner for the day. The power was intoxicating compared to my 325ia. I will post my impressions after I get the pedal fix next week.
PS: Just pulled the trigger and ordered the ECIS intake and Active Autowerkes (AA) exhaust for my car as a 1 year old anniversary present. Arriving later this week, install this weekend and will post my impressions next week.

    I have a '02 330i step I bought last year.

I remember having the same problem with getting a consistent smooth start. It took a good 3 to 4 months before I could usually start smoothly. I still occasionally have the same problem.

I do not think it has anything to do with the sticky pedal, which I also seem to have in the warm weather. I think it is just the combination of the drive by wire and engine/trans software.

    Practice, Practice, and More Practice...

BTW there is a fix (tsb) out for the sticky pedal.

I will probably go for the fix after I wait and see if the new pedals hold up. So far I have read that it is a great fix and everyone is happy with it so far.

Let us know how you like the AA exhaust. I installed a conforti CAI on my 2001 325ci three weeks ago and I think it is GREAT.

The Germans use clear washer fluid in their cars. It is fine to use the blue fluid. We color the fluid in N.America so it is not mistaken for water. I THINK the fluid sold by the dealers in the states is blue. Personally I like the BMW fluid - it has that nice rubbing alcohol smell :)

Does anyone know when the MY2003 production starts? Has it started already?

Does anyone know the post # or link to a delivery check-list I saw on here a while back. The day has finally arrived, my ED 330 SP is waiting for me at the dealership! Now I am trying to remember all I wanted specially programmed but can't find that link. I've since learned the beauty of bookmarking those since the keyword search here doesn't actually search through each posting.

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks,

Does the BMW fluid have any different makeup than standard wiper fluid? I remember somebody posted about the BMW coolant, so I was wondering about this as well.

Does the CWP use the same reservoir for the headlamps as the windshield? Maybe it has some special debugger on it. :) Cuz it works VERY well. :)

Wow. The board really got philosophical this past weekend (while I was away). It was nice to read the theory over how we select cars, rather than flame over transmissions and tires.

Wish I had time to write more now, but one quick opinion on car "value". Personally, I believe that once you get into the $30-40,000 price range, you have unlocked the door to world class driving and luxury experiences,...and really have no need to go any higher except to indulge extravagance or add size. You can get into a 330i (judiciously equipped), for that price, if you want a sports sedan. You can get a base Corvette (I think?), if that's your cup of tea. You can get a nice full or mid-size SUV, the best minivan made, or a Lexus (if you like comfort). You could probably even swing a Cadillac Deville on an end-of-model-year discount for $40,000, if you wanted a very big sedan. The new Nissan Z will have remarkable performance, will be a pure sports car, and will cost a little over $30K loaded. You can even get an Audi TT or a Z3 if you want a roadster.

The moral? In today's dollars, I can't imagine spending more than $40,000 for a car (on a middle class, midwestern income, $50-200,000). Everything above that, IMHO, is just over-indulgence.

Now, if indulgence is your purpose, how about an E-Class? As for sports cars, I agree with Brave. Once you get into the price range,...it has to be Porsche - if for no other reason than: "There is no substitute." And nearly everyone believes it.

The on going saga of my new car purchase that did not happen.

The sales manager called me this morning to tell me that if I was not willing to pay the difference of $400 then how do I want my deposit back, check or credit card.

    Stay away from Norwood, MA.

I can understand your frustrations with the issue and I wouldn't want to deal with this guy either, but over the life of the car, is the $400.00 worth it to you?

If it isn't, then just order the car and go somewhere else for service.
If it is, get your money back and look elsewhere. I know Shipo got his 5er for ED in that area somewhere (all the East Coast is one big area for me since I'm in soCal), so he might be able to offer a better dealer to work with that would be more willing and certainly more friendly.

I think $400 for an extra yr of service isn't too bad. I imagine you feel sorta sucky by this switcheroo, but you'll have a pretty nice car after all is said & done. Too bad the dealer sounds a bit of hard-azz type--he could've been nicer & offered to sweeten the deal with some small gesture. I think I'm saying the same think as erickpl. Can you just go elsewhere?
  • jpierce26jpierce26 Member Posts: 60
Thanks for the support. I am going to look into a European Delivery. I have never been to Germany. It might be kewl to check it out. Plus I can save $4,000-$5,000 on the car.

Can anyone tell me if the interior doom light is supposed to light up once you shut the engine off with all the doors still closed. I remember this was the case, but lately I dont recall seeing that happen. Anyone can tell me before I call up the dealer?

Wheel wax works great. I cleaned my wheels often, and that smooth surface that was once there on my car when i bought it a year ago was gone. This product brought it back and break dust seems to not be attracted to it as much. Or at least it doesn't stick to it. I like this, easy on, easy off. And works like a charm. I also used Klasse for my car this weekend. Beautiful stuff. The car is shinny in the parking lot as we speak. Get the wheel wax, you won't regret it!
  • seivwrigseivwrig Member Posts: 388
When you shut off the engine and pull the key, the interior light comes on.

I ordered my 2002 before a jan '02 price change and I got the previous price. I know, this is not the same as getting a 2003 at the 2002 price but the principle is the same. The dealer could afford to lose $400. He might make that up on the next two middle class suckers.

Washer fluid: it smells like rubbing alcohol because it is rubbing alcohol and water. It is part of that environmental friendly stuff that BMW believes in. Very easy to replace. If you are not satisfied add a booster like P21S.

LeeNelsonMD:Though it is not advertised, the rumor is for a midyear change on the 2003 3er coupe. The end of 3er model year is around late 2004 to mid 2005. BMW is known to make changes near the end of a model year to push cars. Just like the belief with the ugly 5er spy shots. I actually think the 2003/4 5er will look pretty good. I say hedge your bets on a later 330Ci. We should here more info by Dec '02

jpierce26:Buy the car, go to Germany, take the family and eat a bratwurst for me.
  • erickplerickpl Member Posts: 2,735
jpierce, ED sounds good. Contact shipo for information on the deals he got. He got a 5er, but you might be able to work a good one on a 3er too. :)

As for doom lights, I hope mine never come on ;). My DOME lights come on when I've stopped the car and taken the key out. But just stopping the car, nope.

As an aside, I got to drive from Edwards AFB to San Diego last week. Got to enjoy some good 'spirited' driving on 15. :) Also did a bit of driving around SD that night. Had the XM radio cranked and having a BLAST! Gotta love the 3ers!

jpierce - who is Shipo???? Such blasphemy! Shipo hasn't posted here in a while. He must be out driving his new 530i or selling mice. He has been posting to Edmunds boards for several years and is something just short of a walking encyclopedia on BMW's and most everything else (Shipo, are you getting red yet?)

Here is his 'auto'biography - leased a 99 328i (no sport package), traded it for a ED 2002 530i (with sport package), lived in NJ, moved to NH (or Mass, forgive me) and would rather give up driving than give up a stick.

Whew, I think I'm ready to join EA (Edmunds Anonymous) - there must be more to life!

Erikpl: You drove right by my house. I live about a mile off the 15 in Corona. It was the city between the cows of Mira Loma and the wine of Temecula.

Got my Homelink from Circle BMW today. Interesting experience from Circle. They completely flaked after I sent in my order. Gave me a price with shipping, then never shipped. I emailed a couple times and got no response. Finally ended up canceling my order. At that point, they called and apologized and offered, if I hadn't already gone and bought it somewhere else, to ship it UPS Next Day. I happily agreed, they have a great price. Installed it this afternoon. Works great. Reasonably easy to install. I was sweating only a little while cutting through the plastic. Quite proud of myself. Made me nervous messing with my brand new not-so-cheap car. Now, what can I do next?
  • leenelsonmdleenelsonmd Member Posts: 208
Does it void your warranty to install the Homelink and other stuff? I want to intstall homelink on my next bimmer and set up my V1, both of which are relatively easy, but I am reluctant to screw with it if there is a chance they will get malicious and void the warranty.

I'm in Rancho Cucamonga. For all of you out there not from so. Cal, first of all yes there really is a Rancho Cucamonga and second yes we have a Jack benny drive complete with a statue of him at our minor league ball park.

Your dealer in Norwood is no exception, all the dealers in MA are like that. Have you considered buying a used xi? There's quite a number for sale on www.bimmer.org. Personally, I would never buy a new BMW again, the experience was too frustrating. Then again if you must buy new, try out the dealers in southern NH. I've heard Tulley is decent.
I'm not sure if this is possible, but the best dealer in the country is Cutter Motors (www.cuttermotors.com) in Santa Barbara. Not sure if you can order ED from them and get them to ship it to MA after you pick it up in Munich. Call their internet sales manager Franco Karzag, he may be able to help you out.
  • soverypoornowsoverypoornow Member Posts: 74
Yeah, I can vouch for the existence of Rancho Cucamonga. Even can vouch for the existence of the minor league Rancho Cucamonga Quakes and their mascot Tremor. And to keep it on topic -- I drive my 3 series up the 15 Freeway past the cows to Rancho Cucamonga whenever I attend baseball games there. That stretch of the 15 is not so fun. Just straight, boring and crowded enough to make it not conducive for high speed.

Too bad you were dealing with slime. I say stick to your guns---it's a buyer's market. You should be able to get a deal for $1200-$1400 over ED invoice. Check out invoice prices here:

    http://www.eurobuyers.com/

You won't regret doing ED. Depending on the time of year you travel (winter and early spring are cheapest) and your length of stay, the savings should pay for your trip. And, being an East Coaster, you will get your car 3-4 weeks after dropping it off in Europe.

    Good luck!

BMW has issued a service bulletin to replace the old accelerator assembly with a new smoother operating one. The problem has been most noticeable in hot weather. Your service center should know all about this new bulletin and be can order and replace the accelerator assembly for you.

j: I think that if you stand on principle with regard to purchasing a BMW, you will probably never have one. That said, I understand that everybody has a budget, and I advise people to stand firm on their budget.

If its not a budget issue, I'd just pay the $400, which as vkwheels said, is really not that much for a year of service.

My philosophy: You're buying a BMW. Nobody "needs" a BMW, and they cost more than an acceptable, relatively equipped form of transportation - therefore the purchase is a luxury, no matter how hard anybody tries to rationalize it. You're not going to get a bargain, because they don't need to make you feel like you got one to sell you the car - that's what Infinity is for. The easier you make the purchase on yourself, the more pleasantly you'll look back on the experience.

I don't feel like a "middle class sucker", to quote seivwrig. I had a pretty low stress purchase experience with my car - even though I may have paid a few hundred dollars (which is peanuts on a monthly payment) more than I could have - had I been willing to go the whole nine yards. Afterall, who wants to end up jaded like tchoo.

Enjoy ED, but remember, you end up spending the same total amount of money (or more), as most people spend the ED savings on the trip. Of course, you get a nice vacation out of it, in addition to a great car.

nyccarguy - I don't go to the Cape much (more hassle than it's worth) and I don't know firsthand what's worth seeing. Maybe someone else could chime in on this?

BMW Norwood - I posted a couple of times last year advising new buyers to avoid them. When I negotiated a deal with them, they chose not to tell me about the mid-year discounts that BMWNA had thrown in last year and they were essentially going to charge me close to MSRP while I was thinking that I was paying about $1,400 less. The best dealership in the Boston area is Peabody. For ED, I'd contact Steve Diamond at eurobuyers.com or Passport BMW in MD - that's where platypus got a great deal (contact name was Joern Ernst (sp?)).

I need to have my 325i's brakes bled for the next track event and I was quoted $90 and $95 by two dealerships. I can't believe it takes them over an hour to do that. What do you guys typically pay?

I have a similar philosophy. Here in Houston, there is no getting tough with the dealers (at least I have not found a weak link). The price of a car is dicated by the market. MSRP is just that, "suggested". When you buy a Ford Expedition expect to get 8-9k off of MSRP. When you buy a Honda or Nissan, you can pay 2-3% over actual invoice without any problem. When you buy a BMW (particularly when you order one) you can expect about $500 off MSRP (3 series) without a huge fight. You can negotiate until you are blue in the face and you might get $700 off here in town, but is the hassal worth it for $200 more? If you want an M car then you will pay MSRP. If you do not want it, then someone else does. I do not get too hung up with MSRP, I just think you should pay what is reasonable for your area. What else can you do?
  • sinbatsinbat Member Posts: 1
You are correct about BMW. I got $1000 off MSRP when I ordered the 323CI coupe in '99(2000 model).
  • seivwrigseivwrig Member Posts: 388
I second LeeNelsonMD. You really cannot haggle on a M car. The law of supply and demand kicks in. There are not many M cars to go around and there is always someone that is willing to pay more than MSRP (suggested price). To tell you the truth, the best bet is to join BMWCCA now and get a M car next year. Then cash in on the rebate and use it as an additional payment when the check arrives.

I could have drove a big Suburban for the price of my Bimmer but I would attract more thieves in my neighborhood.

    Who is Jack Benny?

Sorry, I couldn't resist but should have.

I now truly feel like a member of the Order. This week the subwoofer blew out in my everything-on-it-but-NAV '01 5-speed 330ci, and the driver's door rubber gasket disintegrated. If I can manage to develop a notchy pedal, I'll have a trifecta (and a glass of merlot, thank you).
  • leenelsonmdleenelsonmd Member Posts: 208
I have to admit that the waiting to order is killing me. I have been an avid reader here for the past 6 months and have been waiting for the 2003s. Now that they are here, I am ready to order and am trying to wait until next May when I can get my rebate. Every night I log on hoping to read some miraculous story about how BMW has cut prices in half or the rebate is now valid for BMWCCA memberships of 4 months or more. You can tell that I have had a rough couple of days--I seem to be posting about twice a day and unlike so many of your posts, mine are meaningless.

I thought that some of you could relate.

hi, about to buy a 98 BMW 328is, leather, manual, 42,000 miles - "BMW certified". have an agreement with dealer for $24,500. do u guys think this is a good deal? thanks for your advice!

I have read how so many of you choose the ED option, and I have read the basics about ED. Can someone please give me some details about the ED pricing for the 330 Ci? I see the invoice MSRP for the standard purchasing, and the standard ED pricing at sites...where do I find the ED "invoice" price?

Is this true, that I get the cheaper pricing just for going to Germany, signing out the car, and dropping it back off to be shipped here, to my dealer of choice? Why is this cheaper if they are actually doing all the prep work twice (it seems), still paying for the same shipping and delivery to the dealer, etc? Where does the savings come into play?

    Please help. Thanks.

Hi everybody! I live in East Coast (specifically in NJ). I ordered 2003 330i automatic with premium package option (mat excluded) for $37,912. Do you think this is a good deal? I even asked the salesman this question and his answer was "it's a competitive price". The price is basically $1,500 above invoice but he added up a $100 for Prep cost (cleaning and setting-up the car). This is the first time I ever heard of charging the customer for car's preparation. Is this a normal fee or was I been ripped-off by $100?

  • jjshabadoojjshabadoo Member Posts: 17
$1,500 over invoice sounds like a decent deal. I negotiated a $1,400 over invoice deal back in Feb. (NJ) and the dealer did not charge a prep fee. They did however charge a processing fee for the paperwork. As long as you are aware and satisfied with any and all additional charges, I would say you didn't get ripped off. If they threw this in at the end of negotiations, then I would be suspicious.
