Are we the only three losers from the board that have no life even on a Saturday night? We were too lazy to do anything so we just went to pick up some food and rented "Traffic" so we are staying home. We may go out later with some of my younger friends but I'm getting too old for that stuff :o)

Eug-- I recently purchased a BMW after shopping west and east coasts. Dealer offers ranged from $500 down from MSRP, 7.5% above invoice (with or without floormats), to flat $ markups from invoice, tacking on the advertising fee as well. I think you need to go into the dealmaking willing to walk out at anytime, realizing beforehand what is the top dollar you are willing to pay (based off of shopping around) and will not exceed. Politeness and finding a salesman who is straightforward and explains his pricing in detail are important aspects as well. Also, the more time and effort a salesman exerts for your business the more likely he will negotiate (in the end) closer to your desired price. Haggling over hundreds of dollars on $30k plus purchase seems trite in terms of your overall cost, but I think for the buyer getting the best deal in this price range becomes much a matter of pride; while for the dealer/individual client rep, a chance to pocket a few hundred or less may mean more money for feeding the family, buying more options on their future BMW purchase, taking wife/girlfriend to dinner, new sega vision whatever. Call me Compassionate! Bottom line is that it's business, and any firmer approach sets you/us up for being taken for hundreds! Enough soap boxing here--good luck!

I was talking to a local dealer about a 330xi lease and was surprised to find a $525 acquisition fee. Is this a legitimate fee or is it just "dealer prep" in disguise? Is it negotiable? I guess the same question can be asked of the disposition fee also. Thanks.

My wife is out at a bachelorette party. I rebuilt my side entrance railing and mowed my lawn today, so I am feeling lazy.

I may go out with friends, but probably not. So yeah, this may be my Saturday night activity.

If I was single, I'd sure be going out, but since I'm not allowed to hook up, a lot of the incentive kinda flies out the window. Know what I mean?
  • brave1heartbrave1heart Member Posts: 2,698
I know exactly what you mean. A good deal of the fun about going out is about who you're gonna meet. Being married almost makes bar-hopping less fun than chatting about BMW's and drinking beer in the process. Bachelorette party? Good for you, she'll be all prepped when she gets home ;o) I get the feeling you and I would be pretty good friends if we knew each other in real life.

    OK, popcorn's ready.

There is not much competition for the bimmer business here and the best I can seem to find is $750 of MSRP:( Since I am stuck with this dealer, if I want to get their loners and their full attention in the future, should I need it, one of my questions is; Does it make any sense to wait a month or two, since we are so close to the end of the model year or should I just bite the bullet and buy the car now. They do have what I want through a dealer trade. On some previous auto purchases, I have seen some discounting start to happen about this time of year as the 2001 model year is 9-10 months old. I know the 325i is very popular and has great demand so maybe discounting is out of the question.

I am getting very anxious to purchase, but would hate to find out that I am missing something here.

Any help or comments would be appreciated.

By the way, my father(age 76) is a new 525i owner and my sister recently bought a 323i, from the same dealer but through a different sales person than I am dealing with.

    Thanks....

I am considering to buy a 325i or 325xi. But, I am not so sure the reliability of BMW 3 series now. Need to go to library to find out consumer report.

I heard BMW now gives a very good warrenty, like to pay all scheduled maintanence in the warrenty time, and have 7 years option to buy, etc. I have not talked to dealer yet. Can you confirm?
  • denrightdenright Member Posts: 285
BMW offers a 4 year warranty, plus a 3 year maintenance and upkeep program. Not only are you covered against faulty parts and problems, but you are covered against excessive brake wear, wipers, oil changes, etc. Warranty and maintenance can be upgraded for longer periods if you are willing to pay extra.

As far as negotiating a price goes, ALWAYS negotiate up from invoice. NEVER negotiate DOWN from MSRP. Don't think of it as $750 off invoice, think of it as $2500 over invoice.

You should be aiming to get a price $1500 to $1800 over invoice.

I recommend you expand your travel radius to include other dealers in the region in order to heighten the competition. 100 miles, 180 miles? Regarding 2001 prices coming down, I suspect like anywhere that cars remaining on the lot from 2001 dealers will eventually price to sell quicker. Otherwise, if you order, that dealer likely will come down in price only if the manufacturer lowers the invoice price. I don't see that happening. Good luck!

    Hi All -

I just found this board today and I'm hoping someone can help me out. Here's the background.

Purchased 2000 328ia end of Oct, 1999. By Jan, 2000 I mentioned to my dealer that the transmission 'hesitates' upshifting after I've accelerated quickly. First I was told that I must have trained the 'adaptec' tranny that way so they reset it to factory settings. That lasted a couple of weeks. However they have reset it about 1/2 dozen times and each time the 'solution' time gets shorter and shorter. Now resetting the computer doesn't help at all.

In Aug, 2000, my dealer agreed there was a problem and the service notes on my car indicate that BMW is aware of the problem but does not have a fix for it. By Oct, 2000, the service notes indicated that the car is shifting into 'sport mode' so I told them to tell it to stop. At one point, my dealer forwarded the computer codes to BMWNA tranny tech guru who said it was set to hesitate and to replace the controller (so that was done).

Finally, in Mar, 2001, the BMWNA tranny 'guru' came to my dealer and I took him for a test drive. I easily repeated the problem over and over again and the 'guru' says it's normal and that it's a safety feature. Well, if it's a safety feature, why don't all the BMW cars have them? I told both my dealer and the 'guru' to find me another car whose tranny is like mine and prove it to me. So far the dealer claims to have tested 2 others and they're the same but they refuse to let me test drive the cars.

So, you all seem pretty knowledgeable - you tell me if this is normal:

Example: (a) I'm on a highway entrance ramp doing about 40-45. I hit the gas (without hitting the kickdown) to come up to speed and the tranny drops into 2nd gear and revs up to 6k. (b) I'm on the highway at 60 and accelerate to pass another car. The tranny drops into 2nd or 3rd gear and revs up to 5.5-6k. I ease my foot about halfway off the gas to tell the tranny to upshift ... and it doesn't! For those of you interested, a 328ia slows down REALLY fast when doing 70 in 2nd gear. I've tried everything to get it to upshif and all I can do is keep my foot on the gas at 5.5-6k until the tranny finally decides to upshift.

When I took the 'guru' for a test drive, he said I had to take my foot all the way off the gas to get it to upshift. Well, sometimes it works, most times it doesn't. I've been on the phone to BMWNA customer service and they've told me there's nothing they can do and that the procedure is to have my dealer sort it out with the 'guru'. Well, once the 'guru' said it was normal, my dealer changed his tune and won't do anything else. BMWNA customer no-service said I can write to the president's office or I could always trade my car in.

I love my car but I hate the tranny and one of these days some poor soul is going to plow into me from behind when my tranny finally decides to quit upshifting all together. My (very pampered) car is less than 2 years old and I don't want to trade it in but I'm at my wits end.

PLEASE ... can anyone give me input here?

    Many thanks for anyone's help,

    Lauren

I would personally take AWD with all-seasons every day of the week over a 2WD w/snows. I can not imagine snow tires offering any benefit, save higher speed handling (which you really shouldn't be experimenting with in those conditions) over AWD with all-seasons. Doesn't the AWD snow package come with all seasons? Damn, that makes it less worth-while to buy some snow shoes for it! AWD w/snows, now that would be interesting.
  • gurumikegurumike Member Posts: 442
That, which you described, is EXACTLY what it's programmed to do !!!! It's really very clever. I wouldn't personally describe it as a "safety feature", but I can see why that would be said.
    Here's whats happening.....
Start of, boot it, full gas (no kick-down button), in either sport or normal, transmission selects lowest usable gear and throttle is held to redline. At this point, the car decides that you are in "performance driving" mode. In any of the following gears, if full throttle is still used, and is held beyond 3000 RPMs, if there is a reduction of power the car considers that you may not wish to shift up. Example, stick-shift driver hauls booty on the on ramp, after joining the freeway (or about to) driver is in 3rd gear, at posted speed limit, but has to wait for the truck to finish passing before he can revel in the straight six's intoxicating howl to the red line again at a thoroughly illegal speed before selecting 4 gear and deciding how much your drivers license is really worth.
There really is nothing wrong, if that's what you're getting. I hate to say it, but all those trips to the dealer were......

I ordered my 325xi (finally) just about a month ago. All I have now is a production number. I registered at the Owners's Circle at BMWUSA.com and find that my car is only still ON ORDER!!! I would have thought that it should haved started production by now. Is this delay normal? Is there anything I can do to speed this up or should I make a complaint somewhere? Thanks much.
  • denrightdenright Member Posts: 285
No, your wait is not abnormal. If you have any questions, call BMWNA (you can get their phone number at www.bwmusa.com) and give them your production number. They can tell you what your car's status is.

If it is "111" status, it is still simply "on order".

If it is "112" status, it is in pre-production, and will be getting built within a couple weeks.

If it is "150" status, it is currently being built.

I ordered my car on April 28 and I am expecting to take delivery sometime in July. Sigh.

    Loooooong wait.

Where did you get the idea that a"training" fee,
advertising, dealer prep, document fees, etc were
"legit"?--All such items are nothing but pure profit add-ons for the dealer. These costs are built into the base price of the car for all makes
not just bmw. When a sales person tries to add these phony fees, one should have them deleted or
    walk out fast.

What is the deal with the steering? I may be getting a 330i off the lot and was wondering if I should request the steering to be fixed. Also, are mats included and what should one expect to pay for a dealer installed alarm system. I was quite surprised it wasn't included. Thanks.
  • gurumikegurumike Member Posts: 442
150 is actually "scheduled for" not "in" production, but it's close enough!! lol
155 is basically the final step (finished), 151, 152 are different prod stages (paint shop & in factory).
  • gurumikegurumike Member Posts: 442
That is totally false. You really should do at least some research before making a post like that. Each of the items you listed is on the BMW invoice, paid by the dealer. The systems/training fee are in the "regular" invoice price (as it would appear on this web sites new car price guide), not additional. MACO/DAG (call it what you will), the group advertising fee it also charged to the dealer by BMW NA, it varies from area to area. There is none in a few areas. Dealer prep should is not charged by BMW (unless it is reflected on their invoice) and some dealers may try to charge for it. That may not be quite as valid.
  • drew37drew37 Member Posts: 62
I am also looking in western Michigan. Grand Rapids is tough. But you should be able to get $2500 over invoice in Kalamazoo without a lot of effort. From that point on it will be difficult. I know many people in other places are getting $1500-1800 over invoice but Michigan is a difficult area and I'm not sure why. If you would like to get in to the specifics of all this email me at drew56030@cs.com.

    Hi gurumike,

I was going to wait until Monday to ask you about the status of my car, but if you have some time over the weekend and can check for me now, it'd be much appreciated.
330xi black/black, PP, SP, CWP,X, CD; Freeport, NY. I've been waiting since April 28, but seems like it's been 111 forever.
    Thanks
  • yeeehayeeeha Member Posts: 33
ALL additional fees are legit. EUG was asking about advertising/MACO/DAG and the training fee.

I did plenty of research on those fees, and like GURU said, they ARE charged to the dealer via BMWNA...you can see it on the wholesale invoice.

Also true is that the MACO/DAG fee is not charged in rural areas, where their may be a single dealership in one region. I believe the intent is for groups of dealers in metro areas (ie Houston, Dallas, LA, NY, etc) to share in the costs of additional advertising used in their particular region (print, billboard, radio, etc).

Whew, I think this would be a good one for the FAQ board....signing out.

Maybe I'm lucky (for once in my life) but I ordered my coupe from Germany on April 30 and it has already arrived at port in the States. Four weeks on order is entirely too long. Maybe you were given a week 25 build date a month ago instead of week 22 at the latest.
  • denkdenk Member Posts: 75
Not sure, but it looks like we are saying the same thing. Those so-called extra charges are aleady in the invoice cost paid by the dealer. So if you pay, for example, $1500 over invoice plus a $500 training fee you are really paying $2000 over invoice. And I'm also not sure about the regional advertising charge. A bmw salesperson told me that dealers are charged an "average" fee which is included on the invoice they pay. I guess your point is that the dealer invoice cost as shown on edmunds etc. doesn't include such fees.
  • gurumikegurumike Member Posts: 442
The Edmunds invoice does include those, so if you paid $1500 over + systems, you would be paying too much. But if, for example, you asked to see the dealers invoice and they got it for you (don't bother asking!), you would see those fees on the invoice and then you might not realize that the total invoice is no different than what Edmunds says, but you would, understandably, think that the dealer's trying to pull a fast one. He isn't, but how are you to know? Hence the logic in the dealer not providing invoice perusal.
  • gurumikegurumike Member Posts: 442
    This is not a drill.
roc50mg's car is actually about to get it's production slot. Let's look again in a few days to see if it's 150. It may only just have gone 112, it may have later on the last day I checked.

    COOL !!
  • roc50mgroc50mg Member Posts: 102
You have absolutely made my weekend! I am soooo happy to hear that my car is finally 112! At least now I know something is happening and I will not be waiting forever. I can't wait to keep on tracking it's progress.

Hmmm....am I being too weird now if I compare the pain of waiting for a new first time BMW to that of a woman being in labor or to that of having a kidney stone?

Okay guys (and gals), Has anyone found any useful shelf products that will get rid of the scuff marks on the inside door (like when your shoe scraps on the door), and on the dashboard. Is this vinyl or Leather (the inside door and dashboard?)

    Lenox? which ones? Any recommendations?

I had a bunch of people over saturday night. I have nice big rec room, bar, 9ft pool table, 80" tv, juke box, the whole nine. Once I lose on the pool table I'll check for messages. As soon as Football season starts, you wont hear a peep out of me on monday nights. Well, maybe after the game. Did you see the movie "Office Space"?, if not, rent that when you get a chance. :o)

Car is here....Should I get the Alarm?
  • denrightdenright Member Posts: 285
I am getting the alarm simply because I live in Washington, DC, and I want my car protected when I park it in my driveway at night. If I lived in a less criminally active area, I might forego it.

I was considering getting LoJack (as I did on my Grand Cherokee) but I think I am just going with the alarm. The anti-theft microchip system in the key acts essentially like a kill switch, making the E46 very hard to start without a proper key, even for a professional thief.

The alarm adds additional anti-theft protection, plus it protects against break ins (wherein stuff inside the car, rather than the car itself, is stolen).

I will probably use The Club too for some measure of additional deterence, although a car thief can cut the steering wheel and remove the club in under a minute.

    Gurumike-

Can you check to see if my car has hit 150 yet? It hit 112 status 10 days ago. 330xi, steel gray metallic/gray, PP, CWP, CD, AWD, bound for VOB BMW in Rockville, MD.

    Roc50mg-

Congrats on making some progress. I bet our cars will end up on the same boat after all. Given our locations, we will probably take delivery within a couple days of each other.
  • lewparkerlewparker Member Posts: 28
I too went with the alarm. My dealer (Tate in Annapolis) installed it for $350. I will soon be putting it in the garage as soon as I can sell my BMW 2wheeler. But I definitely want some protection for times when it will be outside. A few months back I woke up and saw the neighbor's brand new 'vette up on cinder blocks, sans wheels and tires.

BTW, made the pickup yesterday. Everything went smoothly, I'll report in full later. Still getting used to all the controls, but so far I'm impressed with the power. Right now I'm keeping one eye on the road and one on the tach, and it seems hard to keep it below 4K rpm. It seems like the motor wants to keep going, I guess that's what they mean by "willing engine". At any rate, Steel Blue and grey leather is a stunning combination.

Speedvision a couple of weeks ago showed "Grand Prix" with James Garner. Great movie, however last night was the king of all race movies "Le Mans" with THE MAN Steve McQueen. Most memorable line for all of you race freaks like me "Racing is life. Anything before or after is just waiting" Any else body watch?
    Any other favorites?

Question: How does one go about signing up for the BMW Car Club membership (BMW CCA???)? I thought I had done it (it made sense to) or at least had intended to do it, but don't recall the membership process...I think it is $35/yr and entitles numerous discounts on parts, accessories, even future purchases.

Guru - AWD AND snows? Man, that's some serious defense. Yes, there is one thing that's even better than that: AWD and snows and chains. How about that? Invincible, dude, I'm telling you. You could go to one of those Monster Truck racing events with a similar configuration. Of course, if you get to a point when you need snows for AWD, you are better off staying at home, taking the bus, or at least going back to driving school. I mean c'mon: how much traction do you really need even in deep snow? You So Cali people crack me up - ooops, it's drizzling again, can't leave the house now :o)

The Trans Am felt big and bulky relative to it's interior space. Cheap plastic interior and poor visibility. The good things were: a V8 motor that is nothing short of astounding (325HP at 4000RPM'S with 340LBS of torque) just like Edmonds said. Handling was great, the Monsoon 500 watt stereo was also great, better sounding than the HK in my 325i. Nice muscle car, but it feels like it would fall apart in about 5 years or less. I didn't think it was worth 30 grand even with the new LS1 vette motor. 20 grand would be a good price. Fast car, but my 325i smokes it in all the other categories! :o)
  • alpine325ialpine325i Member Posts: 209
My front wheel drive Taurus is my snow mobile, The 325i stays under the car cover. If I lived in Southern Cali, I would have a convertible. That's where you can leave your car in the driveway with the top down overnight! :o)

I have ordered a 2001 BMW and have the production number for the car. It's status is 111. How do I determine what "week" it is, and what does the week number mean? Week __ from what start date?

    Thanks in advance.
  • lewparkerlewparker Member Posts: 28
My car is a 325i Steel Blue/Grey, PP, CWP, Xenons, CD. Thanks for the congratulations; it was a pretty long wait, but I surprised myself with my patience. I'm typically a pretty impatient guy. I didn't call my dealer more than a couple of times, and I only checked with BMWNA a few times also. I just got a bit wigged out toward the end when BMW said my car was at the dealer and the dealer said they didn't have it. But my dealer called a couple hours later to let me know it was there.

As I said the pick up was smooth and my salesman was very cool. He definitely stressed the importance of the survey and told me that if I had any problems to call him rather than dissing him to BMW. So far no problems at all. I've put about 120 miles on the car and I'm very impressed with the smooth power and precise handling. The suspension seems perfect to me - the ride is not at all cushy but it soaks up the bumps very nicely. The steering should be the "new old" as the build date stamped on the door post was 5/1/01. I don't have any reference for comparison, but it doesn't feel light at all to me. The stock sound system, no HK, sounds surprisingly good. I've heard others say they believe that it lacks midrange punch - I'd agree with that and also add that the bass response seems somewhat limited. But it's pretty good for a stock system.

After I've had the car for a few weeks, I'd like to report my experience to the board similar to Brave's a few weeks back. Hopefully it won't be too repetitive.
  • lewparkerlewparker Member Posts: 28
Ask your dealer for the production week, he should be able to tell you. It means the week of the year that the car will be built and finished. Jan 1 is week 1, Jan 8 is week 2, etc.
  • roc50mgroc50mg Member Posts: 102
We're all in this thing together. Should we start another discussion group called "Anxiously Awaiting the Arrival of our BMWs?" A board where we can share our most intimate thoughts about our soon to be lover?
In all seriousness though, the wait is too darn long! Being 112 for 10 days doesn't sound pleasant, denright. Does your Owner's Circle still say "On order"? I really hate that.
Irawles1: Find out from your dealer what the scheduled week of your car production is. For my car, it went into 112 status about 2 weeks prior to actually scheduled production. I originally put a deposit for my car on April 28th and was told that it is a week 25 production. Just yesterday, after over a month of checking Owner's Circle daily, gurumike told me that my car is now 112.
Group hug everyone; for all of us who are still desperately awaiting the arrival of the Ultimate Driving Machine.
  • brave1heartbrave1heart Member Posts: 2,698
I sympathize with you, guys. All I can say is that it's all worth the wait but checking the status every day would be a torture. I'd recommend focusing your energy on activities that bring more immediate pleasures. I can name a few but I'm afraid my post will be deleted again, so use your imagination. Good luck. I'm glad I didn't miss this hug :o)
