Pretty amazing about John Roberts dealership in Austin. I guess what is even MORE amazing is that the Austin location is the "sister" dealership to the John Roberts location in Dallas! The Dallas location is one of the largest in the city (I think). I wonder if the poor customer service is specific to Austin; otherwise I don't see HOW these guys could have become as big as they have become!

hey tchoo..almost the same specs as mine. mine's 325i though.

I remember your saying that you felt like you'd have to give the car back at some point--as if it were only a dream or a gift on loan. I don't even have my car yet, and I can't imagine that I'd actually be the owner of such a machine. That feeling has become much more acute of late. Whenever I see a guy driving a 325/330 around here, I think--"That's gonna be me in a month! Holy cow!"

My brother said, "The pool of date-able women will increase significantly once you get the car." I replied that I wouldn't want to date the kind of girl who wants to be with me for my BMW. He said, "How true. But wait until you meet the kind of girl who can really appreciate the refinement and power." Something to look forward to, eh?

I was torn between Jet Black and Topaz Blue Metallic. Got the Black in the end cos it looks better with the black trim on the 325. The Topaz Blue goes better with the titanium trim of the 330Ci. Guess we'll be spending a lot of time washing and waxing to keep the black clean. I'm trying to decide between Meguiar's or Blitz wax. Any recommendations?

I just called my dealership and asked what my rate will be assuming I take my delivery after June 30. Guy hedges and then says "7.5%".

Holy crap! That rate, he informs me, reflects a full point bump applied by VOB over the BMWNA rate, so they get some profit on the financing.

I just submitted a home equity loan application to lendingtree.com. I suspect I can get a rate that good on a home equity loan, PLUS the interest will be tax deductible.

I am also thinking of looking at taking bids on regular car loans.

Man, if they think I am going to pay 7.5%, they are CRAZY.

Thanks all for the advice on my previous question (rwd + snow or xi for up here in Montreal?)

I've decided I will go the xi route and, after much rationalization :-) will even cough up the dough for a 330xi.

Now for my new dilemma: is the Sport Package worth it with the 330xi? The difference in cost is about 2200 cdn$. The questions are: What kind of handling improvemeny do I get, if any? What kind of rims/tires do I get and which ones look better (it seems there are 4 kinds: 325i/xi, 330i/xi non-SP, 330i-SP, and 330xi-SP?)

I can get some elements of answers looking at BMW sites (Canada and US) but I'd appreciate all your opinions.

As a side note, I got my current Audi A4 Quattro without the SP and always had this nagging "what if" thoughts for the past 3 years (and the Audi's SP rims looked better..)
  • denrightdenright Member Posts: 285
Look close at the AWD SP before just tacking it on. I had assumed I would get it (as I am option-happy when buying cars) but I took a close look and decided to skip it. Why? I'll tell you.

First, the AWD SP is looks-oriented, rather than performance oriented. It adds fancier rims, but the rims and tires are the same size as standard 330xi rims and tires. It also adds "M" aero ground effects and sport seats.

The AWD SP adds NO suspension improvements to the 330xi.

I concluded that the AWD SP is largely cosmetic and not worth the money. Though the sport seats are sweet, I didn't like the M ground effects, and I didn't want to shell out the US$800 for a package where I was indifferent (rims) or felt actively negative (M ground effects) just to get the seats.

    Just my two cents.

It's been exactly a month since I picked up Shtroumpf Muscle and there hasn't been a day that I haven't thought to myself "I'm the luckiest sob to be able to afford this car and enjoy it the way that I do".
As far as women goes, there's nothing better than having this car while you're young. Your brother is right - cynical as it may sound, I'd have to second his opinion. I see younger women staring at the car when I'm at a light for so long that I'd get uncomfortable. And believe me, they are not staring at me as much, it's the car. When you find the right one to marry, you'll feel it and know it but there's nothing wrong with helping yourself have a good time until the right woman shows up. Just one more reason to get the 3-series.
  • thedeepdarkbluthedeepdarkblu Member Posts: 106
I'm sure my 3 will garner more looks than I could possibly achieve on my own. The only women who look at my Accord are moms who probably are thinking, "Hmmm. Now that would be the perfect family car." Even w/ the nose mask, alloy wheels, and fog lamps, it's still just an Accord. It's like putting a shiny foil lid on a container of vanilla pudding. It's still vanilla pudding.

As an aside, I think you mentioned that you're currently in open parking in an apt. complex. So am I, and I'm concerned about my car getting dinged by careless people and pooped on by aviary bombers. How are you dealing w/ this? I'm contemplating buying a cover, but I fear that it will just attract attention--like, "Steal me b/c I'm mysterious and valuable enough to need a cover." Plus the BMW Noah cover has "BMW" boldly printed on it. Smart, really smart.

I actually park right on the street in my neighborhood. One month and the only scratch (very minor) that I have was self-inflicted during one of my very first parking attempts. There are a lot of German cars in my neighborhood and I think other drivers are generally careful while parking. And you know what, they can put dings on it all they want - I'll live. The $350 I'm saving every month from parking (or should I say $700 for two cars) buys you a lot of detailing after a few months and that's if you need it at all. As far as aviary bombers (lol!!!), there is no good defense from the F-16's. I disarm the bombs as soon as I see them (happens maybe twice a week average) because the acid they contain would soil through the clearcoat even after a few days only. I definitely think that a car cover would be overkill - I want to enjoy the car but have a life too, you know.

I am getting bids in response to my lendingtree.com application already. One, from DeepGreen Bank, is at 6.95%, with another .25% off if I make electronic payments directly from my checking account.

When one keeps in mind that home equity loan interest is tax deductible, this is actually a VERY good deal.

Still two more bids due to come in. I will keep you all posted. However, this offer already shows me that I don't have to just take whatever BMW is willing to dish out.

I pick mine up Fri. can't wait.

I have been riding motorcycles for years and bikers always wave to other bikers. Does the same apply to BMWers?

Strange point: A Harley rider will not wave to a Honda rider. I'm the later. Would a 3er flash a 5er?

BMW Logo: Any thoughts on the design? The black ring represents unity of the perfect balance of driver and vehicle(the lights blue ~ triangles)

I located a car equipped exactly the way I want. I am in so. Cal, the car is on the lot at a Bay area no. Cal dealer. My local dealer says he can do a dealer trade. However he says it will cost $600.00 to have Wagoneer sp? truck it from the dealer's lot back to VPC then truck it out to my dealer.
Does $600.00 sound legitimate for this? or is he just blowing smoke?

After a couple of months, I finally made the time to install my alarm. I'll start by saying that anyone with even mediocre mechanical skills should be able to do the install. Following is just some of my observations on installing the three different parts...

interior motion sensor (~2 minutes); This was almost too easy... I kept looking back at the instructions to be sure I wasn't missing something. The only issue here is to make sure your hands are clean to avoid smudging the headliner material (I wore latex gloves).

tilt sensor (~15 minutes); this part goes in the trunk and was pretty easy too. The toughest part was removing the trunk panel to access the mounting location. The panels are basically carpeted card-board, and once you feel comfortable bending them a little, are easy to manipulate. Everything went back in place and returned to it's pre-bent shape.

siren (~40 minutes); this one requires removing several pieces of cowling at the rear of the engine compartment. Everything comes apart and goes together pretty easily, but it was a little intimidating to me to be disecting my new car. The hardest part was actually mounting the siren to the fire-wall. I struggled for about 10 minutes to hold the part in place and drive the bolt (I'm still looking around the driveway for that chunk of knuckle that got sliced off :-)). Finally, I tucked my tail between my legs and asked my wife to give it a shot. With her considerably smaller hands, she had no problem getting the bolt started.

When I take the car in on Weds. for the steering "fix", I'll have them activate the alarm. Assuming I didn't mess anything up, total cost should be ~$260 ($220 for the alarm and $40 for the activation).

I've found that Harley riders will wave when they're alone or if they're the 'new breed' riders (distinguishable by full-face or quality open-face helmets).

I have only had one return of a wave or light flash... an E36 M3. It's kind of discouring to me. When I had my MG, we all flashed headlights. When I drive my Jeep, other Jeeper's wave.

Yeh well, I'll continue to do what I do on the motorcycle... wave at 'em all.

  • kominskykominsky Member Posts: 850
I'm assuming he meant "sucks the paint off almost any car on the road". Yes, it's true...
  • brave1heartbrave1heart Member Posts: 2,698
Harley bikers don't like any Japanese bikes and I think there is a lot of resentment between these two groups. I would've never thought they'd be waving at each other. See, Harley to Harley, yes, very often. There is no resentment between 5's and 3's - they are very similar cars and philosophy, only different sizes. But there is no comraderie either. At least in my experience so far, no other Bimmer has waved at me and I haven't waved at anyone either. Maybe I should try it and see what kind of response I get.
Not sure what you mean about the BMW logo. You know it is a propeller in motion, right?

Are you trolling or do you genuinely want information? If the latter, you should tell us exactly what your friend dislikes about his car and/or his dealer experiences.

If you ask a precisely worded, intelligent question, you are more likely to get useful information.

    Hello everyone,

When I got my 325 the front license plate case/holder had the white sign stating the "Ultimate Driving Machine". I do firmly believe that our BMW are the Ultimate Driving Machines, however, that sign is a little cheesy. Here in MI they don't require front license plates so I can put anything in front. Do you know of any plates that look better? Do you know where I could get one?
  • brave1heartbrave1heart Member Posts: 2,698
... if you had a chance to read the Metro write-up. I can see your thought process going something like this "I could blow that Metro away in my M3 and give that guy the finger!" Also, have you tried this one: lie in wait on the hard shoulder, like a cop car, and when a slower car passes by - say an old lady in an Oldsmobile, with just her Easter bonnet visible over the dash, roar into the traffic and tailgate her for a while, honking and flashing your lights -"Move over granny!" Then downshift and storm past her at redline, finger extended, laughing wildly.

Also, I really appreciate your advice on how to protect the cars: no sun, no rain, no driving, keep the car in underground storage in a perspex box with humidity control, wear gloves and a mask when approaching it, place lace doileys under the tires so they don't get dusty etc.

When I get my own M3, I will spend hours in front of the mirror perfecting the "flipping the finger technique" (think De Niro in Taxi driver-mirror scene-"you talkin' to me?!") at the weenies who drive 325s-really just lawn tractors with moonroofs and BMW badging.

brave: propeller in motion? Did they make aircraft motors at one time? Rolls Royce used to. Do they still?

Wave. I guess I just wave if its a silver 3 series sport. That's a shame. I had a VW scirocco and I would get waves all the time. I think its kinda neat.

I know that they were involved in building military equipment during WWII, just like any other German industrial company at the time. I think the propeller in motion is supposed to symbolize their dynamic engineering and emphasize performance (motion). I also like MB's star (conquer by land, air, and sea) but BMW's is a lot more inspiring. It's funny how the logos reflect the manufacturers' philosophies even after all these years. BMW: motion and performance above all; MB: look important, stuffy and stodgy, and then worry about performance.

BMW does not make planes now. Rolls Royce did not either. Their parent company Vickers does.

Brave were you the one who raced go carts in Boston? I just flew back from NY and the inflight magazine by US Air had an article on the F1gocart racing in Boston. Seems to be very popular in Europe and becoming moreso in the US.

I rode the typical ones on my trip but boy I bet the 40 mph is a blast!

I enjoy this board, interesting, informative and fun posts. I currently drive a Chrysler 300M (which, imho, is one of the best looking cars on the road) which I enjoy very much. When shopping in '99, I compared it to A4, Saab 9-5, Lexus ES300 and Acura TL. Being a lifetime skiier, I wanted FWD. Anywho, the A4 was really my favorite, but when I tallied up all the wants/desires/needs, the 300M came up numero uno (0% financing and invoice purchase price certainly helped!). After 2years and 24,000 trouble free miles, I still dig this car. Build quality is my only criticism,it's not terrible, but compared to the other cars I shopped it's definately a couple of notches down. No reliability issues, however. Knock (plastic!) wood.

Unless Mass Millions or Megabucks helps (or EMC, Oracle et. al. come roaring back...), I won't be shopping for a new ride 'till fall 2002 at which time I plan to shop the usual suspects: BMW 3, MB C, Jag X, Audi A4 and maybe, but not likely, the Lexus IS300. Unfortunately, I don't ski nearly as much as I used to, so I'm going to consider RWD with TC. Therefore, I'm lurking in many discussions, but I really enjoy reading here.

For the Bostonians: It may be out of the way, but RoJo Sunoco has a self car-wash. It's on Rte. 1 in Norwood about a mile off of exit 15 on 128. So, if you're ever heading South Shore-ish, you can give that a look-see. Also, some of the cheapest gas around, last I filled up, $1.64 for 87 Octane. Add 10 cents/gallon as you climb the octane ladder.

    Go Sox!!!

'21 Dark Blue/Black Audi A7 PHEV (mine); '22 White/Beige BMW X3 (hers); '20 Estoril Blue/Oyster BMW M240xi 'Vert (Ours, read: hers in 'vert weather; mine during Nor'easters...)

Yep, that's me. My favorite hobby, I totally love it. They are a blast to drive and they have helped me become a better driver on public roads too. These go carts come close to real racing, except of course the speed is much lower. I'm no star at all - mid-pack in the Rookie League but I have been improving steadily and most of all: having a lot of fun. At 205 lbs, I am naturally disadvantaged against most other drivers who seem to weigh at about 140-170 average. The weight makes a big difference because the carts are otherwise equal and weigh only 150-200 lbs, so you can see that a 50-lb difference in body weight can make a huge difference in the power-to-weight ratio. It is a very European concept because it is a F-1 racing imitation. I am guessing bringing F-1 back to the U.S. last year gave the owners courage to take a risk and bring it over here. I heard they are planning on opening a second facility somewhere else but I'm not familiar with the details. I'd passionately recommend this to anyone who loves driving.

indeed a security LED? How to make it blinks?

BMW was founded as an aircraft engine manufacturer. The badge is a spinning airplane propeller reflecting a blue sky background. They moved on to motorcycles and later purchased a car company called Dixie, whose cars sported a double-kidney shaped front grille.

Aaron.....The obvious answer to John Roberts BMW becoming so large in Austin is that they are the ONLY dealer in town. We desperately need another dealer in town. With all the new money in town we could easily support 2 dealers.
So what specifically did this service rep tell you that has you so conserned?

Drcr.....I had a BMW motorcycle until just recently and gave up on waving to Harley owners. What a bunch of low-lives. If the Harley guy was wearing a helmet then there was a good chance he'd wave....but only because he was likely an business executive rather than your typical freak. Japanese bikers always waved at me.

My state doesnt require a front plate either, so I replaced the plate holder with the straight bumper strip. It's part #51118195304 , cost me $13. You just snap out your current holder and snap in the straight strip. Neatens up the front end look. You can also get the Euro-style plate holder and put in a German plate as some others have mentioned doing.

Thanks to a recent post here, I investigated and confirmed that BMW will cover an oil change under the free maintenance even before the service interval indicates (usually about 15k miles). The only requirement is that the car be one year old. There's a service bulletin 00-02-00 explaining this. Hope this reminds others like me who drive fewer miles per year.

Not sure which war you're talking about but you sound like those Japanese soldiers that were left out on islands at the end of WWII and are still hiding thinking the war is not over. Then again, they teach this somewhere around 5-th grade, so you either haven't gotten to that point or didn't pay a lot of attention in class.

I wouldn't take this pic too seriously - it seems like a test vehicle. Note how narrow (almost partially masked) the front lights are; the black side molding is back; the side blinker is different; most of all, it's missing the beautiful rims. I wouldn't read too much into it - it's probably some kind of a test car.

WHOM WOULD PURCHASE A BMW BEFORE OWNING A HOME ? THIS IS NOT MEANT AS ANY KIND OF NEGITIVITY TOWARDS ANYONE, JUST WONDERING, I WOULD HATE TO PARK MY BABY IN A COMPLEX WITH SOMEONE IN THEIR 1985 CADDILAC CIMMERON SLAMMING INTO MY DOORS DAILY , FOR THOSE WITH OUT A GARAGE I TRULY FEEL FOR YOU ..... :(

I'm not going to purchase a home until I move back to Chicago from Northern VA. Real estate prices out here are insane, and I will be moving back to Chicago in about a year or so to take care of my parents. I was hesitant to buy a 3 b/c my apt. complex is a haven for door dings, BUT I figured that now is my only chance to buy a sports coupe (for some time anyway). When I get married, it will be harder to justify a 2-door. Plus, my current rent is $500/mo. Hard to beat.

That's my rationale, and it works for me. I'll just have to park my car a little further away from the blast zone.
  • brave1heartbrave1heart Member Posts: 2,698
You know I did. We just spent over 60 large on cars and we park them on the street but I am not interested in owning a house. Been parking on the street all my life and it never bothered me. Even if you own a home, you still need to park your Bimmer at malls, theaters, work, and I can think of a lot of worse places. Don't need to feel for me, it doesn't bother me. If it did, I'd have moved to the burbs long time ago. My current monthly rent is $2,500 but I would not trade my tiny 850 sq ft apartment for anything else right now. I'm certainly not gonna rush buy a house so my 325i would be ding-free.
  • thedeepdarkbluthedeepdarkblu Member Posts: 106
Mother of Crap! That's some serious rent. I just went hunting for a 1 bedroom apt. Going rate is about $1100-$1300/mo. Too much money for a rental in my opinion. Your apartment must have marble floors, cathedral ceilings and bay windows.
  • shiposhipo Member Posts: 9,148
My mother lives in the Tudor City section of NYC. She is paying $3,800 per month rent for a 650 square foot two bedroom dump. The building has character (on the outside), however, only one bathroom works (out of two), no A/C, poor heat and the plaster is falling off the walls and ceiling. This is what we call a bargain in Manhattan.

My wife and I moved out of the city back in 1997, built a custom 3,500 square foot house on almost one acre of partially wooded property, and our mortgage is considerably less than the rent my mother pays.

Finally after 10 years of living in the "Big City" my mother has taken off her "Rose Colored Glasses" and is looking to move out our way. Cool, free baby sitter. ;-) Just think, Mom can get a cool place to live AND buy herself a new 3-Series and still save money!

    Best Regards,
    Shipo
  • brave1heartbrave1heart Member Posts: 2,698
I was paying $500 too when I was single and had two roommates. It was great - lots of beer and fun. I can't rationally justify the rent we're currently paying except there are two of us paying for it, so I'm really paying $1,250 if you know what I mean. Besides, we do have a two-bedroom - it's a small apartment but very new and efficiently built. No marble floors or cathedral ceilings but I do like seeing someone else take care of out English courtyard garden and plant new tulips every couple of weeks. Call me a snob. I can think of a variety of weekend activities than are more fun than fixing railings or mowing the lawn. Give me another two years of care-free weekends. although I don't think I'll last that long.

    Hi all,

Our '95 325is is having some troubles I was hoping to get some answers to... starting about a year ago, 2nd gear (manual) wouldn't engage without some grinding. My fiance took it to our longtime mechanic, who said the clutch was burning out and it'd be better to wait until it was completely shot before replacing it (?? that's question #1!)

Within the last two weeks, however, it's gotten a lot worse- the clutch doesn't engage the gear until it's almost to the top of the pedal motion, and there's a fast rattling noise (sounds like a bee) that comes up almost all the time (*sounds* like a small plastic piece that must be loose, and vibrates 100s of times bc. of the engine vibration)... any thoughts as to what's going on/what we should be looking for?

    Thanks-
    bmwow

PS- congrats to all those whose long wait recently ended! I'm doing the fly out to Munich on the 27th...can't WAIT!

Here's one that makes my "All-time Stupidest Moves" list, especially for someone who should know better.

After having Gretl for about a month, I washed her to a glistening shine one fine Saturday morning. My wife and I decided to run a few errands. After a few stops, it was time load up on weekly groceries. After piling about a dozen bags into the trunk, I thought (using the left side of my brain), "How can I close the trunk without getting any nappy fingerprints on the clean, mirror-like finish?" "Use your elbow! (covered by long sleeve)," the illogical right side of my brain hastily replied. So down goes the trunklid with a thud, slighly bruising my elbow and putting a nice dent in the once-fine sheen of the trunklid. Ooopps!!! What a moron! At least I had no one to blame but myself. The dent is hardly noticeable to the non-informed, but obvious to me.

Moral of the story: a dent in the trunk is worth two fingerprints on the finish. :)

I can easily have it fixed for about $20-30 and 20 minutes at any auto body shop or dent specialist, but I haven't been bugged enough by it to cross it off the to-do list in the last 4 months.
  • denrightdenright Member Posts: 285
Um, are you telling me that nudging your trunk closed with your elbow dented your car???? What are these cars made of, paper mache?
  • denrightdenright Member Posts: 285
Wow, you just named exactly what I spent the weekend doing... mowing the law and rebuilding and painting my house's side entrance railing.

    Weird.

Just my two cents, but I think it would be wiser to buy a house and get the HUGE tax benefits of home ownership and start having my property appreciate than buy $60K worth of cars. Then again, it's none of my business and if it works for you, kudos.

Not my place to judge. =)
