Hi everyone...so nice to join ya all. I've really enjoyed reading all (and I mean ALL) your posts on your MPVs (& other cool stuff).

Just this past Sunday, my hubby and I picked up our used silver 2001 MPV LX. And we LOVE it. We've already put a few hundred miles on it.

I am a research fiend (read; puter geek) and have been researching minivans for what seems like EVER. Started with the ODY, then jumped to the Sedona cause we wanted to buy not lease and still have money to work on our new house. We happily ended up with the 2001 Mazda MPV, thanks mostly to this folder and the MPV folder. (BTW...got it at just under $17K with alarm/luxury pckg, 2 yrs left on warranty and another added by dealer)

Visiting the ODY, Sienna, Sedona problem folders was pretty scary to say the least. And tho' I realize you have to weigh out the info you find there, I was muchly impressed with the topics in the MPV Problem folder (usually fishing or something other than problems). :)

Anyhow...wanted to give a shout out to all you regulars and thank you for sharing your MPV experiences and making me laugh alot!

Alot of people have had the 16" Dunlops retire fairly early. Mine are pretty well spent after 24,700 miles... and only half of those miles are actually on the Dunlop tires, the other half being on the Hakkapeliitta snow tires. I guess, do your homework and pick the tires that fit your needs.

Lauren 4521: Yes, I second the thought. The postings are very helpful and provide a useful window into the ownership of an MPV. It helped seal the deal for me, too. And like you, I (gasp) thought about the Sedonna.

Also, Congrats on the 2001 Mazda MPV, but more importantly, congrats on the new boy who is on his way. My wife and I just had our second and so we bought an MPV 'cuz we needed a place to put the little guy! My wife and I wish you a short and trouble-free labor.

One more word for Lauren : Epidural. It works...yes, better living through technology, it's a wonderful thing...

Congratulations on your LX, and glad the fine people on this board [of whom I am one, I blushingly admit] gave you the insights you needed to make a profoundly wise decision. I had to laugh out loud at your comment about the problems board. Maybe they should put quotation marks around the word "problems." [judiciously aimed snicker at the "other" problems boards.]

    Happy Miles!

Lauren and mcadrecha, welcome! Glad you chose the MPV and joined a group of really satisfied characters (and they *are* characters). Re: the Problems thread... I think the problem is FINDING problems, eh? Luckily our gracious host (waves at Steve) allows the topic drift .

lauren, enjoy your new car. I just like you am fairly new owner and just like you I have read ALL the post in MAZDA MPV groups. Unfortunately I have read them after the fact that is after I bought my MPV. Fortnately I have learned quickly that the biggest problems with MPV are coffee cup holders :-)

Congratulations on your new (used) car. Keep us posted how it goes.

javadoc, I don't have much choice right now. The only tires that I can get at size 215/60 17" are Michelin MX4, Michelin Arctic Alpine, and Dunlops SP 4000. Arctic is rather out of question since I live in FL. I am left with MX4 and SP 4000. So far I love those Dunlops and if they pass my test while driving on wet I will stay with them.

By the way this week I am buying bumper step plate. I will follow your installation instruction and if I screw up it will be your fault... -:))))

Yes, at Beach Mazda in Huntington Beach. If you use Costco's new car service, the standard price is $200-$400 above invoice. Invoice to $100 above is not too difficult to get. Below invoice would require some good negotiation skills.

Sorry, I've got to disagree with you. The new MPV is NOT *radically* different than the '00-'01. Sure, the engine size is different, but it's actually the same engine as before, just bored out .5 liter more. Yes, there are some new features too, but in the end, it's the same van. Also, there's quite a few folks here already in an MPV who are looking to step into the '02. IMO, this single board benefits all parties. But I don't make the rules, just suggestions. The rest is up to our gracious host ;)

We just picked up our 2002 Silver ES on Saturday, and wanted to let you all know that your comments and witty banter certainly helped us confirm what we already were leaning toward. For those who are interested, we were able to negotiate from our dealer in South Florida invoice price plus options. The options were in-dash CD changer ($450), roof rack ($200), fog lights ($250), cargo mat ($40), and bumper step plate ($30). Our total was $26,600. This is our first minivan and I must admit that I am pleasantly surprised. It's very smooth and quiet, handles like a car (indeed, a sporty car), and has good power. My wife loves the ergonomics and carlike driving quality. My thing is the remote control that opens and shuts the power sliding doors. I love it. I found myself driving on the highway much faster than I did in our Ford Explorer. Time to get a radar detector. Hope to have many pleasant driving miles with my family and many enjoyable discussions with everyone here in the future.

I did think about welcoming all the newcomers a while ago, but the "regulars" do a better job of that than me :-) (elbow, elbow, wrist, wrist, back to you to Java).

I skim all the messages so it's no biggie to me if there are several MPV boards floating around. But I do think that newcomers/guests scanning the topic list miss some of the discussions and don't get the benefit of Town Hall. Plus there is a lot of '00 info that can be useful to the '02 owners. And "unified" discussions tend to be strong and active, while the narrower ones tend to die off and get sent to the archives.

Either way, remember it's "your" Town Hall. I'm just here to do a bit of light housekeeping now and then, and plug our wonderful features, like, er, The Edmunds Maintenance Guide.

Fwiw, I have enjoyed the stock Dunlops. They have performed well and do fine in the wet, but we don't get the wet that you Floridians get. They basically just wear quickly. I'll bet in a year or two there will be more tires to fit the size you need. Not being a Michelin fan, I hear they have a great warranty program if you ever need it.

We have conducted a similar poll about a year ago before info on upcoming 2002 was available and it is interesting that Mazda seems to listen to their customers. Most top items from the poll are now available on 2002. Here are some of the top choices people made:

    1. Larger engine (29 votes)

    2. All wheel drive (19)

    3. Four wheel (ventilated) disc brakes (16)

    4. Traction control (15)

    5. Power seats (14)

    6. Backup obstacle sensing system (11)

    7. Power sliding doors (10)

    8. Built-in child seat (10)

    9. Seat/steering/mirror setting memory (9)

    10. Steering-mounted audio controls (9)

You can see the whole list here.

SP 5000 Sports. I replaced the 215-60/16 SP4K's with 225-55/16 SP5K's. (I have a set for every car I drive. Although I'll probably tear up the ones for the SVT Contour in my driving school the weekend of 4/20. I don't drive that car in bad weather, so I really don't need a set of all season tires. So I gotta wear out the ones I have before I replace them. Probably go with a set of BF Goodrich G-Force KD's, since I run in a street tire class. Of course, if it rains, I'm screwed, unless I bring the Firestones.)

of the larger SP5K's on the 16" MPV wheels. The slightly chunkier tire gives the van a bit more sporty look. Not the current, sleek modern performance tire look, but a 60's muscle car with wide bulging tire look.

    I kinda like it 8^)

Just an odd thing I noticed on the MazdaUSA site some time ago...when you request a comparison between say MVP and Sienna, the chart shows a cassette player as standard on the MPV. I haven't yet gotten to the purchase phase due to interest rates, but when the time comes I'm going to review that info and pose the question to the dealer. Anyone else notice any quirks like that in van comparison specs?
  • pjd58pjd58 Member Posts: 366
Our OEM tires have 16,000 miles and I wouldn't want to go through another winter with them. Minivans are brutal on tires and the camber setting on the MPV(better handling)doesn't help tire wear.

I've been researching tires on Tirerack.com and I believe I found a excellent replacement tire........ Yokohama's Avid touring. It has a 8.8 out of 10 customer satisfaction rating, one of the best scores from consumers on tirerack. Link provided below. Excellent price too! The tire is also available at Discount Tires.

pjd, I have to tell you that my friend bought Yokohamas for his Quest and Lexus ES300 and when they were new they were fine. Once he put a little mileage on them vibration problems started on both cars. Balancing them little helped. He just switched both cars to Michelins and vibration is gone. Will see in few months how it goes.

I have nothing against neither Yokohama tires nor Tirerack. I have bought Continentals before from Tirerack and they were fine tires. I am just stating the fact.

I like you more and more Tboner! I just purchased Dunlop SP Sport 5000 tires for my Protege, and they are great! I just thought my Pro was noisy because it was a small car, it is almost eerily silent now, plus they stick like the dickens. They don't have the response of a summer tire, but for an all-season, you really can't beat them. Also for the guy looking to replace his 17" tires, (I haven't even bought my MPV yet, and I have already researched tire replacement, am I a car geek or what!) The 215/60 17 tires are very hard to find...just go to a 225/55 R17 or 225/50 R17 tire. You will find many more options (including the SP 5000). Personally I am going with the 225/50 R17 tire ...it will make the diameter slightly smaller, but all that does is make the speedometer slightly less aggressive...but that's OK, I go a couple miles an hour faster and feel like I am speeding or something!!
  • alexv1nalexv1n Member Posts: 248
If you are choosing replacement tire sizes and don't want (or can't) go with OEM size, this chart might help you select the closest match: http://www.vakcer.com/mpv/info/tirespec.htm

bean3422, 225/50-17 is almost 5% smaller than stock 17" tire so you will go that much faster (additional gear? :)

    I hope it helps.

Or as I call them Doglop. My 97 civic came with SP20 Sports, I had them balanced every 5K and got 79K out of them. So, I thought it was a no-brainer and put the same tires on the civic--WRONG. At 27K I needed two new tires. And yes, I did balance every 5K like the originals. So I called Dunlop and explained my story and I told them something must be wrong with the rubber on my tires. They called my local NTB and when I visted they gave me $23 per tire (all FOUR) for abnormal wear. I just ordered X-ones. For all of you with excessive wear on your Dunlops, it might be worth a call.
  • scarter7719scarter7719 Member Posts: 89
Our MPV's had them on about 5K now. They are very smooth and quiet. I was mightily impressed with how well they handle in the rain.

Yoko makes some really fine tires and some lousy ones, just like most tire manufacturers. My FIL has Yokohama Avid tourings on his Honda Accord(yuk) and swears they are the best tire he has ever owned. Great in the rain, snow and very quiet. He has 25,000 miles on them and they show very little wear. Tirerack.'s customers have given them one of the highest ratings. I will probably purchase them at Discount tires. I've had great service with DT.

Someone was saying earlier that minivans are tough on tires. Why is that? Is it a weight issue? I have the Dunlops on mine and they are supposed to be 50K tires.

Alex, there you go again, touting your website!! I forgot that your table was there...thanks for reminding me. Ok, so it looks like I will be driving 5 mph faster than I normally do...dang it, I want that lower profile. Knock the wife and kids around a little! (-: Well, maybe I will have to go with the 225/55 17. Of course, the only all-season performance tire I can find in that size is Michelin Pilot Sport A/S for $200.00 on tire rack...that means it is at least $250.00 locally. Please don't make me put touring tires on my minivan...I have to at least pretend it is a sports car!!
  • javadocjavadoc Member Posts: 1,167
I'm a broken record... I like the Yokohama tires, but I've usually just ran AVS Intermediates and AVS db tires. Both served me well and lasted many seasons. However, I only drive about 4-5k per summer on my summer tires, so a set could easily last 6-8 years, and outlast my ownership of a car. I've heard not so good stories about issues w/ the warranty with Yokohama though, so that may scare some away.

The AVS dbs are really quiet and ride softly, yet seem to handle really well. Wet traction is better than on the MPVs Dunlops, but the Yoko's have 'aqua' type grooves. They're $93/each in 215/60-16, $103 for 225/55-16, but won't work for a 17" application (only come in 45 & 40 series). My 2cents as one alternative, for 16" owners. The 'Lop SP5Ks are super as well.

But, are you looking to replace now or later? Later will give you more choices as more tire makers get up to speed w/these new larger sizes, imo.

I'm installing my Nokia car kit and am looking for the following:

    1) where to get constant power?
    2) where to get switched power?
    3) where to tap into (in radio) for the MUTE feature (I have the 6 disc changer unit)

Also, how do I take the center dash assembly out on my 2002 MPV ES?

Finally, has anyone had success with mounting locations that they'd like to share? I'm thinking at about 8 o'clock from the temp dial.

    Thanks.

I definitely don't want to sound condescending, but are you sure that you want to undertake such a project if you have to ask those questions?

Assuming you are just trying to get an idea of what lies ahead, I'll chime in with a few thoughts.

The radio harness carries both constant and switched power. Use a test light(LED) or a volt meter to find your wires.
To find the mute control (assuming there is one) you'll need the shop manual or ask an extremely knowledgeable radio installer.
The center dash assembly: Do you mean the black bezel or the lower part of the dash? The bezel is just a few screws and highly intuitive. I have never removed the lower part.

    Good Luck on the install.

Hello everyone. First, I want to thank all of you for your input and info. As most of you are, I consider myself as a well informed shopper, specially when it comes to spending much money in a family van.

I must say that I researched for over 8 months and considered Ody, Sienna, Quest, and MPV from every possible angle. I think I read all the post found in this site! (I'm a real geek now). And, I'm glad I did.

I have put over 20K since I bought my 2001 MPV LX last summer. I am thoroughly thrilled at it. It handles so well as compared to my friends Sienna. The power is more than adequate (don't know what all the complain is about?) for a minivan! The ergonomics are great and well thought! (I love the folding 3rd row! Can't live without it!) The price is excellent! (got 1.9% APR and $1500 below invoice). Nothing has gone wrong so far (and I don't anticipate it will for a while). My wife loves driving it. My 2 kids love the rolling window! I cannot say enough about the MPV! This van is the hidden pearl of the oyster shell. Only diligent hunters will be able to spot it.

Of course, if you want to be picky and difficult there are few minor issues that can be overlooked. But they are so small compared to the overall picture. I would highly recommend to anyone at anytime. Thanks again for all your help and keep it up!

Thought I'd jump on the option thread fwiw. I realize that some of my thoughts may be more a redesign of the vehicle than options, and some may be mutually exclusive, but hey, if you're going to dream, dream big! We have a 2001 LX. And we thoroughly enjoy it. We have had it for seven months now and I think that if we had to do it all over again, we would buy it again. It has been a good van for us, and it was a good value when we bought it.

    1) Rear seat both foldable into the well, and removable. I know you can unscrew some bolts to take it out, but it would be nice to be able to remove it without breaking out the toolbox. For those times when the extra cargo capacity would be helpful and you know you won't have extra passengers.

    2) A full sized spare. I hope I never have to figure out what to do with the flat tire if the van is already full of passengers and luggage.

    3) Improved crashworthiness. Better protection in frontal crash. Current frontal protection is not bad, but it could be better. Side air curtains vs. just the side air bags. Beefier bumpers not so costly to repair in minor collision. Rear center lap and shoulder belt.

    4) Extended cruising range either by engineering in better MPG (preferred) or making fuel tank larger (more likely).

    5) Extended length van. More cargo area, plus would (presumably) provide better crash protection for third row seats in a rear end collision. When we are sitting in third row, we do feel a definite sense of vulnerability.

    6) Front defroster to help melt snow/ice off wiper blades. Though come to think of it, we pretty much kept the van out of the bad weather this winter--maybe they did take care of that and we just don't know it.

    7) Be able to latch sliding doors in open position. Sometimes they get bumped and start closing on their own. Potential problem if someone (particularly the small fry) are in the vicinity of the doorway when that happens.

    8) Be able to have interior lights stay on when doors open, and then go off when doors close. Is frustrating to have lights suddenly go out when loading/unloading in dark.

    9) Be able to control rear air/heat temp and vent settings from dashboard. Or I need to develop a longer reach!

    10) Audio jacks for middle/rear passengers. Play something up front through speakers for the adults, and something else for the kids in the back.

First of all I still love my van after over 2 years of driving it! I have a couple things I can think of that I would like to see on it though:
    1. Keep the red as a color option! I love mine.

    2. I would like to be able to control more than just the fan on the rear air/heat from the driver's seat. It is great to have the controls back there but I want them in the front too.

    3. Shoulder/lap belt combo on the back middle seat.

    4. Tether anchor locations for every seat.

    5. Automatic vacumm option.
  • marcbmarcb Member Posts: 152
..are concentrated mostly on the seats, not that they're bad. This is only for future improvement:

    1. The ability to Side-by-slide both left and right middle seats, so I can put my car seat on any side and still be able to slide them to center.
    2. Make the 3rd row a 60-40 split folding magic seats.
    3. Make the 1st 2 row seats sligthly narrower (about an inch less) to improve access to the rear. (And no, pls. don't make the van bigger or wider to do this).
    4. Power rear quarter windows.
    5. More sound proofing.
    6. A Hybrid-electric engine that'll cut gas consumption by at least half.
  • mainsail2mainsail2 Member Posts: 77
The key to success imho is tire pressure. I keep mine faithfully regulated every 4 weeks and have 70-80% tread remaining at 24,000 miles on my original equipment Dunlops (2000 MPV).
  • javadocjavadoc Member Posts: 1,167
Here here! I second this...marcb's: And no, pls. don't make the van bigger or wider to do this, and don't make it longer, I say.

Y'all have great ideas! Danandkat, The interior lights go off after like 5mins, but I think it's just to save battery life. I share your frustration though, because sometimes your trying to clean and the light goes out, and you have to close and open doors to reset it. Maybe there could be an over-ride that resets to the std. program everytime you start the car so that you can choose to have the light stay on sometimes?

Otish, Automatic vacumm option, I'd take that one in a heartbeat! Package it w/self-cleaning exterior (a true 4Seasons package) and the van will fly out of the showrooms.
  • big_guybig_guy Member Posts: 372
I agree with your wish list . . . especially the 60/40 split folding rear seat. Expanded cargo capability with seating for 5 is a big wish list item for me too.

With a roll down rear window?

Open the Driver and Front Pax window, the back window, the cruise at about 80. It will suck everything right out of the van.

What lights are we talking about? Is it the dome light? I believe if you set it to ON instead of DOOR it will be ON until your battery is dead. However this is true of courtesy lights on doors as well as rear hatch light. It will go out in 5 mins or so automatically. I say, just add ON/OFF/DOOR option to it as for dome light and it will be OK. What do you think?

Is the timer there in order to protect us from ourselves? Actually, I don't know for certain if , when put in the 'ON' position, the dome/other lights turn out or not after 5mins or stay on till the battery is flat, but I'd hope not... for my sake. I'd be finding the battery dead all the time. I wonder what it really does, since I leave the overhead/dome light on 'DOOR.'

Yes, the dome light remains on if it is in the ON position. Same holds true for the front map lights. My kids have made sure that I am well aware of this feature. Fortunately, the MPV seems to have a robust battery.
