I own a 2000 Passat GLS 5 speed. Would like to install a trunk mounted CD changer. Does anyone have any experience in buying one post-delivery... will the VW dealers do anything on price? What about this so-called requirement that the dealer has to install to do "coding"? All it is is one plug and two screws. Has anyone looked into EM s. after market alternatives?
Separate question... I am also considering doing the chip upgrade to increase the HP from 150 to 170(to 200, to 240). Have done a little searching on the internet and found at least 3 aftermarket alternatives. There's almost too much to choose from, and I am concerned about tweaking it incorrectly or too much.
Any suggestions or experience sharing would be greatly appreciated.

    Warranty:
I purchased my Passat and warranty at Quirk VW in Quincy, MA.
In case you're interested, I wanted a VW warrantee just b/c I feel they are more accountable, in general, and are more closely associated with VW than a third party. While this may not necessarily be true (I'm sure there are great 3rd party warrantees out there) I am of the opinion that I bought the whole package under one roof (VW), therefore, whether any future problem is with the car or with the warrantee, in either case it is VW's problem, so they're going to have to find a solution.
However, before I stepped into the dealership I researched ahead of time what a 3rd party wty. would cost and what it would cover and simply ensured that the VW wty. was reasonable relative to the 3rd party.
    Financing:
I financed the car through a credit union for 7.5%, but I know VW had fairly competitive rates b/c they tried to get me to finance through them for 7.8% with Sovereign Bank. (BTW, I have pretty good credit, but nothing stellar).

One note regarding carbuyingtips.com: It has a lot of good info and is worth checking out. However, I would suggest passing on one piece of advice offered by them if you plan to buy a VW. They suggest that, if the dealer lies and says that you must buy their warrantee or you won't qualify that you should "pull out your car loan check from E-Loan or Lending Tree, and tell them to shove their warranty and their car loan." While I'm not sure about Lending Tree, VW will not accept a draft check from E-loan. This was true of both an east coast and a west coast dealer. So, while I agree that you shouldn't allow yourself to be pressured by dealer B.S., if you whip out your E-loan paperwork at VW and say, "A-ha! Kiss my a**!", you're going to look rather foolish.

    good luck.

Was advised since I do not have 3 written repair orders in first 12 months, that this is no longer an arbitration issue. Just heard from the dealer. The factory guy was there today and even though they found nothing wrong, they suggest replacing the " electronic ignition end connectors". This sounds like "high tech" talk for coil packs, since I just had the ECU replaced within the past 6 weeks and the only remaining item is coil packs that connect to ECU on one end and spark plugs on the other, anyhow, wife will be home Saturday and we'll pick it up and try again, only difference is, if it act up, IT'S GONE!!!!
All VW are created equal, only the dealer makes the difference, trouble is, there isn't an honest one in this part of the state.

It is truly amazing that your Passat was there
6 times and they only got paid for three visits...
No tickieee, no laundry...You know, of course, that they did not get paid for the Warranty work
that they did, such as it was, without an RO...I
    would want that checked out...
  • betnoyerbetnoyer Member Posts: 6
To clarify the visits. When I took the car back, many times they would check fault codes, drive car around building, look under hood and state " can't find anything wrong", bring it back again when it acts up". Sure, there's RO's for when they replaced items, and these were only done after I called volkswagen and had "care numbers" issued and they called the dealer. To date there's been 2 or 3 care numbers on this thing.
You really know what ironic about this whole thing. I have a road job where I drive 35 - 50,000 miles per year. I have a 96 Passat TDI, which averages 49mpg overall and 56 on trips. It's the best da-- car I've ever owned. Sure I've done maintenance and only had 2 big repair bills. Front exhaust pipe (connected to converter) broke at 152,000 miles and $4500 repair bill in Nov 00. (Hit a deer). Don't think can fault VW on that one.
Enough about beating volkswagen. I'll keep the 96 tdi and spoke to the wife on the phone last night (she's out of town for the week) and told her the cars supposedly fixed. Her response," that's nice. I'll be home Friday night and we'll trade it away Saturday. Maybe it'll be better for the next owner. I just don't trust the car or dealer anymore". Her car, her decision, and a sad day for volkswagen.

Since we've owned the vehicle, which we purchased new, we cannot receive AM reception and the FM reception is lousy. Anyone else have this trouble? Any ideas? I hear there is a Tech bulletin on this but I cannot locate it.
    Thanks,

    reisner,
My 911SC back in the 80's had the same problem. When I was installing an aftermarket unit I found the factory had not connected the antenna to the head unit. I would check your antenna cable first.

I was told that the invoice price for a 2001.5 4-cylinder (1.8T) Passat, Automatic, with no extras is $21,580. This would include the destination charge.
Does this sound right? I've seen what is reported by Edmunds, but given the fact that the dealers invoice can include "other things", I just wanted to get a sense for what other dealers are actually stating as their invoice for Passats.

Maybe others out there would like to know as well.

    thanks.
  • spellboundspellbound Member Posts: 77
    Driver55: I show the following from kbb.com.

GLS 1.8T Sedan with Auto invoice = 20863.00
    Destination charge = 550.00
    Total = 21,413.00

I have seen copies of invoices that include the following two charges.

Floor Plan Interest reserve = 92.00
    Port Prep Fee = 25.00

Whether these last two charges are considered "invoice" pricing can be debated but if you include these the total is then $21,530.00

I find the best way to avoid confusion when asking for a dealers best price is to ask that it be inclusive of all charges except T&L.

Reference your post #503, I assume you purchased the VW Masterguard extended warranty? What was the length (5/60 ?) and the final price you paid for same?

    Thanks

I'm hearing from dealers that the V8 Passat is on the way and that the Jetta VR6 is going to 205 HP. Anybody know anything about this? If this is true I'm taking BMW anf Audi off my list of considerations!!!! Come on people talk to me!
  • spellboundspellbound Member Posts: 77
Reportedly the W8 Passat is on it's way and will be available sometime early next year as a 2002 model. It will come with 4-motion and probably priced in the 35-40k range.

I believe the GTI (and possibly the Jetta) VR6 will be available next year with 204hp.
  • junior75junior75 Member Posts: 22
VW is supposed to be starting production in a few months on the Passat W8. It probably won't arrive here for almost 10-12mos.
The 4.0l W8 is sais to have around 275hp. This Passat will include everything from bi-xenon headlights to 17" wheels & all wheel drive!

No pricing has been set but I heard it might be around $37k.
  • junior75junior75 Member Posts: 22
Next year vw is supposed to increase hp on the VR6 to over 200 and the 1.8t to 170(already on new passat). This has been available in europe for a while.

I was serioulsy considering buying a new 2001.5 4 motion when I heard that parts for VW's are hard to come by. This particular car has been in the shop almost 1 month waiting for a part. Does anyone have any insight as to how service is with VW? Once I purchase a VW and eventually need replacement parts (or service), I don't want to have to wait a very long time to get my car back! Thanks.

Finally after about two years of research and waiting... have got a Corona do Red/Black interior GLX automatic ... will get it March 24... Excellent dealer (www.VincentAuto.com of Rochester, NY) and a good salesman. Between 3-4% over dealer invoice and I think it is a good deal for this area. I know a friend in CA got one for 3% without a trade in (like me my trade-in is barely there with a very old car) and extra perks but he is in an area with lots of WV competition. I had to go to a neighboring city. To be honest I liked this dealer and he had made a good deal with another friend of mine... So it pays to do some research. For me at this time and place this was the right price. Just wanted others to know...

Purchased a "facelifted" GLX last week and have a question on the climate control. This is my third car with climate control. The systems on the previous two would not blow any air during cold weather until the engine warmed up a bit and the air would at least be warmer than the air in the car. My Passat system, if left "on" in automatic initially tries to blow out of the dash vents on high for several seconds and then cuts itself back to almost nothing until it warms up. Does this sytem first think it needs to work real hard, and then second realize the engine temp. isn't high enough yet? Aside from this "quirk" this car is amazing. I traded in a '00 300M and will never look back. FYI GLX Auto, with a 6 Disc Changer was 3.1% over Edmunds invoice cost. Only got my feet wet on (not a bath) on the trade. I must admit, I did get laughed at when I offered to by the new car for holdback . . . . I appreciate any thoughts on the climatronic.

Have had my 2001.5 4 cyl. passat for 3 weeks now. After watching the video vw gave us, it mentioned a "breaking in your passat" brochure. We didn't get one. I called the deale and he said they don't print that one anymore as there is NO breaking in of the new passats. He said to drive like you normally do (well, ok--don't floor it right away nor drive 100 mph). We have been driving normally (city driving and 70 MPH highway). Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Will the car drive better after so many miles? Thanks for any help.

Just opened my 2001 CR auto issue and the Passat kicked some butt. The entire VW line-up overall did very well. Passat won "Top pick for best family sedan or wagon" four-cylinder or V-6. In the safety assessment category Passat was the best in the family car section. The Golf won and the Jetta and Beetle were all at the top of the list in the small car category for safety. To me that says something about the quality of these cars.
Not everything was roses. Reliability for the Europeans fall between the US and Japanese with the US closing the gap.
If only someone would steal my Blazer and I could collect the insurance I could swing to purchase a Passat.

For reasons that I will never figure out...most of those nice little flyers always end up in Parts
or Service...probably because they are closer to the Receiving Dept., and never get to the Showroom, but I must say that, not only do they not print it anymore; I don't know that VW ever did.

Between here & Vortex I find that most folks would prefer to ask questions of strangers than
refer to their Owner's Manuals...this is where you
will find the answer to your question and probably
some other valuable information...check it out...

vwguild assumes you didn't read the manual...

"For reasons that I will never figure out..."some people prefer to send you on a wild goose-chase through a a poorly written and inconsistant manual then just answer your simple question. image

Break-in... Vary the revs for the first 500-1000 miles. That's about it, revs are more important then MPH. Just take it easy for a bit and your fine.

    ----------------------------

That said... reading the manual is a great idea, I read mine when I got my car. Of course my thorough reading mearly pointed out how terribly inconsitant is was and created as many question as it answered.. target=_blank

  • jintsfan1jintsfan1 Member Posts: 5
Would have to agree with Sporin based on what the VW service adviser told me about break in. I picked my V6 up on a Wed. night and had to drive 200+ highway miles on Friday. All he told me was to NOT use the cruise and vary my speed. And that I did, although I think the cars around me thought I was bit whacked. About the CR rating. Yes this car does fall into the "family sedan" segment, but the 300M I traded in is supposed to be a "sports sedan" and this Passat is a hell of a lot more "sporty" to drive than the 300. Enjoy.

Has anyone purchased the Extended Warranty (VW uses Masterguard Co.) on any 2001 Passat? If so, how much did it cost and what is covered?
  • CooperCooper Member Posts: 55
www.vwvortex.com has an ongoing discussion of alternatives to purchasing the VW extended warranty right now. It's in the Mark IV discussion forum. Seems like there are cheaper and more comprehensive alternatives available.
  • kstathatoskstathatos Member Posts: 1
I just took my 99 Passat GLS to the dealer for the 20K service and they told me that the car needs new front rotors and pads and new rear pads! Of course, they added that these things are covered by the warranty. Needless to say I was very surprised to hear that, specially since the car is being driven (mostly by my wife) very "nicely" to say the least. Anyway, maybe I could accept that the pads can wear out faster, I think it is unacceptable for the rotors to require replacement at 20K miles. Has anybody had any similar experience? Any idea what is the expected life of these things?

As a side question, they suggested to replace the factory rotors with the sport types (the ones with holes). Any comment about that?
  • vwguildvwguild Member Posts: 1,620
I really do not believe much of this *break-in*
period crap...Do not abuse anything that is lubricated and made of metal or metal derivitaves
and it will treat you well.

As to the *Owners Manuals* David...Remember all of
this stuff is translated and some things get lost...but, by and large...it is not a bad idea for new owners to read through them...Unless you are driving a Passat GLX and trying to figure out how to set the "Memory Seating*...by the way I have cribs on that which REALLY explains how to do it all, which I am happy to FAX to any one who needs it, the books are pretty good...To me.

And BTW, I really miss New England...NH & VT...spent lots of time there, during the school
    years, on Lake Winnpesaukee ...

... hi, this the 1st. msg I have ever sent, but I have been reading this site since December. I want to thank' all of you for all the insight and knowledge. Now, here is the first of many question to come. Does anyone out there know the difference between Leasing and Driver's Options? Please explain this to me and tell me which is better...Thxs!!
  • CooperCooper Member Posts: 55
Correction: I was wrong, and the ongoing extened warranty discussion is in the "General VW" chat group ... not the Mark IV discussion, as I originally thought.
  • gpapaseraphimgpapaseraphim Member Posts: 5
Hi. I did read the manual. Always do. It did state not to run at high engine speeds and not to brake too quickly. Was just curious if there was anything else I should keep in mind. Thanks. Grace

Hi, I copied the following from Edmund's Review on Passat. Does anybody know when the new models with these facelifts be available? Thanks a lot for your help!

" Potential Passat buyers should be aware that VW will update the car further in the middle of 2001. The exterior styling will become sharper and more Audi-like, with a chrome-trimmed grille, new headlight and taillight clusters and integrated fog lights. Inside, drivers will find chrome-trimmed gauges, an updated center console, a wider front armrest, two integrated cupholders and a "jumble box." The backseat also receives an integrated armrest. Additionally, we expect VW to increase the four-cylinder's horsepower to 170. "

The facelifted sedans have been available for about a month now. We've had ours for about 4 weeks now and I enjoy it more everyday. I haven't been this excited about driving a car in a long time. I read the facelifted wagons are just starting to hit the east coast.

    mzj-
I'm no expert, and by no means is this answer comprehensive, but to put in simplest terms-
Driver's Option and leasing are essentially the same thing, with a few differences. Driver's Option is a type of lease that establishes a final payment at the end of the lease term (typically 36 mo.) that you will owe if you want to keep the vehicle. If you don't want to keep it, turn in the car and walk away. The main benefit is lower monthly payments than financing outright, down side is if you want to keep the car, you need to come up with a big chunk of change in three years (sometimes more than what the car's actually worth), or finance the remaining balance.

I'm sure someone else will have better explanation, but I didn't want to go on too long. There was some discussion about this very thing earlier on in this forum (can't remember exactly where, though- sorry).
  • jamesd44jamesd44 Member Posts: 10
BTW- "Which is better" is completely up to you and varies from person to person depending on their particular situation.

Find out how to calculate the results of at least two different scenarios (Lease vs. Buy, etc.) before you make your decision. I was dead set on leasing, but then after crunching some numbers, I found that, for me, financing was a better way to go (plus, once I saw the new Passats I realized that I would want to keep it for a while).

I am hesitating about whether to buy a BMW 325xi or a Passat V6 4motion AWD 4dr sedan. Consumre Reports gives Passat V6's reliability below-average rating. Is it really the case? I'd like to hear any opinion from the owners. Thanks!

I drove one of the new GLS sedans with the boosted (170 hp) turbo-charged 1.8L and a 5-speed last month.

At this altitude (6000 ft.), it blows away the naturally aspirated VR6.

I loved my test ride on this little rocket so much, I ordered one as soon as I got back. Should be here next week.

    Hi,
I am thinking about purchasing a 2001.5 VW Passat and I would like to hear from other owners what they think. I like the way the car looks and drives. One thing that bothers me is why does VW only offer a 2 year warranty when every other car manufacturer offeres 3/36,000. Whould I be better off purchasing an Audi A4 that comes with 4/40,000 warranty?
    Thanks,

Yeah, I'm sticking it out for another year here in the Hotel Kalifornicated, aka the Front Range.

I'm buying through Gephardt in Boulder. A nice family op. Ask for Gale or Alisa, tell 'em the big spoon sent 'ya. :D

matt00: Hey, check the 100k mile drive train warranty. BTW: EVERYTHING is included for the first 24k including oil changes.

I got a recall notice for my '99 GLX. It is going in for service on the 19th. Has anyone else had this recall, and what did they do? The letter said it takes 2 hours, the dealer said it takes all day.
  • hiflyerhiflyer Member Posts: 79
    slummyj,

I'm bringing my '99 GLS in on the 14th. I doubt the work would actually require all day. It's probably more for the convenience of the dealer.

In any case, VW does provide $25 toward a rental for the day. (Lord knows how much of a car that gets you, but at least it's something.) They also compensate the dealer for washing and vacuuming your car. The other little side benefit is that you get a free front-end alignment out of the deal.

Hi Passat fans, I'm coming off a Volvo S70 lease and am determined to get a Passat-- love the drive, love the car. Minneapolis area dealers aren't discounting the 2001.5 much at all. Best offer I got was $387/month on a 39 month lease with about 700 down--that's a GLS with everything. Anybody know a good dealer in the Sarasota area?-- I'm from Minneapolis, but have a home down there and I think I can save some sales tax if I buy or lease in Florida. Am I wrong? Help!

I am a freshman in college and looking for a car that will last for a long time. I really like the way the 1.8T 2001.5 drives and looks, but I am weary to buy one. I have read the problems that other owners have had, and my cousin who works as a mechanic at the local dealership told me that the doors are now lighter and a lot of little things have actually made the car a little worse from a maintenance stand point. I am thinking about buying a used Mercedes M.-class. I know two different types of cars and such, but my parents have two Mercedes of their own but I really like the Passat styling. The difference in pricing is not too drastic, but the Mercedes would be used and the Passat would be new. Can anybody who has had their car for a while comment on how reliable their Passat is. I don't want to regret my first car purchase. Thanks, and my future posting will not be as long and drawn out as this one thanks and sorry!

It seems what you have to spend big $$ on a BMW 325xi are all standard on a Passat GLX V6 4motion, and the 4motion is cheaper. Any opinion on reliability, performance, and $$ on the Passat 4motion? Help, please! Thanks!
  • starostastarosta Member Posts: 3
I have had my Pas sat for about 1 year or 11k miles. it started leaking engine oil 1 or 2 I miles ago from the gasket in between engine and trans case. The service really sucks it takes them forever to do anything and you also have to exercise your automotive knowledge or unnecessary repairs will be performed. So besides being a nice car it may also be more trouble then it is worth.
