Well, I brought it to the dealer yesterday to get the two noises looked at; there was a whistling coming from the front passenger side of the car, and a rattle in the driver's door.
I'm happy to report that they fixed both problems. The rattle was caused by something in the A-pillar; they took the whole thing apart and fixed it, and then as a preventative measure did the same on the passenger side. The whistling was caused by loose weatherstripping near the right side of the windshield.
So, I'm enjoying my quiet ride while it lasts. My car is a mid-late 90s generation GM product, after all.
What's funny is that you can tell that sometime in the late 90s, GM woke up and said, "hey, we have to start building higher quality vehicles". You can see this in even the Alero, which is a bit newer of a design. My Alero just had a "tighter" feel and was more solidly built than the Intrigue. With my latest problems, for example; the little gimmicky bits around the windows were replaced with giant thick pieces of weatherstripping that would NEVER come off.
should include the new Mazda 6. I've not seen one in person yet (I don't think they're actually available yet) but from what I've read, they look pretty neat. 3.0 L 226-hp V-6 and a MANUAL TRANS available with the 6-banger! Probably just a tiny bit smaller than Intrigue (trunk volume was 15 cf, I believe; Intrigue is 16) but still a solid mid-sized car. Based on the photos I have seen, styling inside and out is striking (IMHO) and, being a Mazda, handling should be spot-on. Maxima is due for a complete make-over (dump that ancient rear beam axle!) so deals should be plentiful on those for the foreseeable future. Motor Trend pretty much trashed their long-term Altima based on stuff falling off and poor build quality in general.
I think GM focused on trying to get it right before they began Intrigue production. I have '98 built early in the process, and other than the ISS problem, which didn't creep up until 70K miles, I have had no problems at all. Only scheduled maintenance. Not bad for a first -year GM product.
I will admit, however, that since mine was built in the first couple months of production, they may have been paying "extra" attention for the first few thousand off the line.
white6 :: I agree the pixs & specs on the new Mazda-6 look very promising. My daughter bought a Protege earlier this year, which I test drove with her a couple of times. For the money 12-15k, that is a very well built car, I was impressed. If I needed a daily driver for a lot of miles I would consider one.
Also the TL is due for a major revamp in 04.
I also like the looks of the Infinity G35, again a lot of car for the money. Especially when you compare them to some of the German offerings.
perna : I think our Alero has a tighter feel to it than our Intrigue also. That said, our Intrigue is still rattle free and our Alero is 2+ years younger.
white6 : The Mazda 6 would definitely be a top contender if I needed a car in the next few months. The write up in the Toronto Star was glowing. My main reservation would be quality as people we know with a Mazda 626 have had a lot of issues.
Well guys, the transmission problem has surfaced once AGAIN! Same thing as before, car drives fine on one trip then it starts shifting harshly and there is a loud whine that varies with engine speed. The car drove fine to work this morning and out to lunch, but driving back to work from lunch, it started. Did it the whole trip. Parked it for a few minutes and restarted it and the noise was gone and it shifted fine again. Mind you the transmission has been serviced TWICE for this and those who have been here a while can recall my posts about my terrible dealership experience the last time it was done. Dealer had car for 2 weeks and claims the tranmission was completely rebuilt and returned car to me with a dent in the fender. So it looks like I'll be calling the other dealer which I am now dealing with and set up an service appointment. IMO, the entire transmission should have been replaced the last time it was in and think I am going to be insistent that it be done this time as this is the exact same thing it has done before. I may even consider bailing on this car if I can get what I owe out of it and a good deal on something new. I said I wanted to wait until 04, but a Cadillac CTS sure sounds good to me about now. I'd consider trying to get a bargain on a remaining 02 Intrigue, but I'm starting to wonder if these cars have some problems. And I'm not making excuses for shoddy workmanship but one has to wonder if they people building these cars really put for the extra effort since they know the brand has no future.
I'm an Intrigue fan, but if my car had your problems and the dealers were all imcompetent, a trade (when possible) would be in order. I wonder why they didn't replace the entire transmission in the first place too?
I know there are a lot of people waiting for the "updated" CTS, but the current one is one heck of a car, 3.2 engine & current interior or not (I like both of them already). Start looking into what you can get for the one, and how much they'll take off the other...that's what we did with the 300M.
I wish I needed a new car in a year or so because the Mazda 6 looks hot. Car payments are finished though so I'm going to enjoy the next couple of years payment free on my 99 3.5L which is still going strong and still catches my adoring eye once in a while with almost 75000 miles now.
oldsman : Transmission problems aren't common on GM vehicles so I'm surprised. I would make them replace it. As for the workers not caring, that's not true as they will be building next generation Malibu's next year. They are not loosing anything.
vcjumper : 6 looks good indeed. GM needs a car like that.
Quite a machine. In short, the handling is remarkably nimble for such a big car. It felt about the same size as the Alero in handling, but was much more spacious inside, at least up front. The 3.5 was clearly a different beast than the 3.4 The Alero's V6 is peppier off the start, but once you hit 30 mph the Intrigue just takes off. The Intrigue was quieter, more refined. The climate control system was nice and the Bose sound system was probably the best I've ever heard in a car. Rear seat room didn't seem to be much improved over the Alero, which is surprising since the Alero is pretty tight. The headliner was quite a bit different than the Alero, I can't tell if its higher quality or what. Btw, I love that little "Precision Control System" badge underneath the Oldsmobile badge on the back!
If the price is right, I was impressed enough with the car to make the deal. I am waiting to see if I will be eligible for the Oldsmobile Owner Loyalty deal. Apparently the cutoff was 12/13/00, and my Alero was purchased 12/27/00. However, the dealer was pretty confident that could be worked around, and Oldsmobile would just give it to me since the cutoff could actually be 12/31/00. Now, at the time of the Alero purchase, we used money from a '99 Eighty Eight to buy that, but that might still be applicable as well. We shall see. If that rebate goes through, than the car would cost somewhere around $18500, wtih $10k for the Alero. So for that deal...it would be tough to pass up. Dealer will know Monday on the Owner Loyalty rebate, and that will help me make a decision. So we shall see...in the meantime, if anyone else has thoughts on the car or the deal they offered, feel free to share!
SLP would be nice... But unfortunately by the time they added shipping and brokerage fees to get something like that into Canada to my door, and then installed, I would probably have been looking at $900 CDN.
Driving up here out of the city is beautiful this time of year. I'm taking a business trip to Wells, Maine next week and decided to drive it, should be an amazing voyage.
I have just about the same feelings on driving an Intrigue! I drove my grandmother's 99' silvermist GX w/3.8 for two weeks back in August, and loved every minute. I can't wait for Thanksgiving when we go back for a visit, so I can drive it with the new Michelins they put on!
Still hoping to buy a used Intrigue in the next year or two, most likely a 98' or 99'. One nice factor, is now that Olds is going extinct and the Intrigue is dead, values have gone down significantly, good for buyers, bad for current owners.
I've been looking, and have found quite a few 98'-99's in the 70-100k mileage range, for anywhere from $4,000-9,000. Around here (southern DE), I've seen some cheap used ones too, including a 98' GL that's green with leather for $4,395. Quite a good price, unless there's a lot of miles or problems. Still thinking of also making an OSV Intrigue clone, it might actually be good price-wise to start off with a used one with some miles on the clock.
What's the highest mileage anyone here has? Other than the clunky steering rack and gaunchy brakes, what are the other common 98'-99' issues?
Where can I find more information on the Malibu? And if it will get 240 hp (which it will need to compete with with the Altima and Accord), does that mean the Impala will get at least the same power bump or more? Will the Imapla interior become more upscale (automatic climate control, higher quality plastic, etc)? I know you don't know all this but where can we find out more info?
If I had to get another car right now, I'd probably go with Impala and buy an aftermarket wood kit. GM seems to be pretty tight-lipped on future models. Not even leaks on replacement car except the next Grand Prix.
beach15: I've got a '99 GL with 45K miles. It has the 3.5 litre engine. So far I have had problems with the intermediate steering shaft, crankshaft sensor, migrating trim on the top of the front two doors, weak trunk struts, loose shifter handle, and replaced two batteries. No brake problems at all. I think the brake problems were most common with the Autobahn package (which I don't have).
Not much info on the 04 Malibu yet, but it will get a 3.5L 240hp optional V6 (Ecotec is standard). Looks to be a very nice car, built on the same platform as the new Saab 9-3.
There are some pictures on the web but they are mostly Photoshop mods on Opel pictures. Should see something soon as it will be making a debut at the Detroit Auto Show in Jan.
I've got a 2000 and have also had the ISS problem, the migrating front door trim (only the passenger side but twice within a year), and loose shifter handle. All were fixed under warranty but I'm on my own now. Brakes are fine with very little pad wear at around 30K miles and no noise. I'm very happy with mine overall. Bought it used with 23K miles (it was a rental.)
Only problem I see with it is the name.. If it really is going to be a 240hp car with sporty attributes, it should have a new name to distance itself from the current vehicle.
I'm even considering a lease on a CTS if I can get 15K for $399 a month and not have to pay a ridiculous down payment. I like the Intrigue alot, but every time this transmission problem rears it head, I start thinking about how much I would love driving a CTS. Speaking of the problem, just like in the past, it hasn't done it again. All weekend long the car has been shifting as smoothly as can be.
mfletouva, hope your deal works out. Mine has the PCS package and has that "Precision Control System" badge on the rear. Is the one your looking at a GL or a GLS? I've only seen a couple of others on the road that have the PCS badge. My only hope is that you have a dealer which has a competent service department as mine is not and that has been the worst part of the ownership experience. Hopefully the dealer I am using now will be able to repair the problem once and for all and not have to keep the car two weeks and return it to me with body damage.
240 hp Malibu? How about Super Sport Malibu. I see your point as BUs are typically thought of as mundane performing cars, but Nissan didn't have to change the Altimas name when they rolled out a powerful engine.
The Altima was a brutal car before the current model came out. I think it would be wise keep the name rather than try yet another name. Good product ( and good reviews) with the right marketing sells regardless of name. The 04 Malibu looks good so far, but I suspect I will try for a CTS or a Saab 9-3 next sedan.
I think the new Altima benefits from Nissan's image makeover and ad campaign over the last 5 years, whereas Chevy is still known for bread & butter commuter cars and trucks except for the Vette. Ofcourse Chevy could change their ad campaigns corresponding with the Impala SS becoming available too (just don't have too many interior shots in the ad!). Cav will be the "weakest link" until they finally replace the 8 year old model.
Have you tried cheersandgears.com? Or gminsidenews.com? There was some info several weeks ago on both those sites about the malibu. There will be a stretched version with a huge backseat that is adjustable. The Maxx version will be shorter than the sedan version though.
I have yet to see a 9-3 in person, but I'm looking forward to it. Cadillac dealer also sells Saabs and if they run a nice lease deal on a 9-3, I might do that. Then by the time the lease is up, the CTS will have the more powerful engine(and the V series) available.
My grandmother's 99' 3.8 GX has been taken in for the following: 1. Leaking oil pan (happened 3 times, but finally fixed) 2. Chrome window trim started coming off (migrating)
It's only ever been taken in for those reasons, but in two weeks of driving, I also felt a clunk in the steering quite often, always when turning at low speeds, usually parking lots. That, and in those very hot weeks, the air conditioing never put much "cold" out, rather just being somewhat cool air. They only ever noticed the air conditioning issue though.
That, and my grandfather hated the Badyear Eagle LS tires. 30k miles, and they were almost down to nothing, and were noisy with a degrading ride to boot. He kept saying Michelin, and from what I heard, he put a new set on this past month. Can't wait to see what it's like now....
Saw 2 03 9-3s at the local Saab store. Very nice looking car but no time for a test. Will do sometime this fall. I have always liked Saabs but now the quality is there as is the refinement from what I hear.
Friends, I think my beloved Intrigue is possessed. Every problem it has is intermittent. The transmission, shifted badly last friday afternoon and has been fine every trip since. So last night I'm driving home and the headlight flicker which 3 service visits and 2 different dealers have been "unable to duplicate" resurfaces. And it was really going wild last night. About every 30 seconds or so the lights literally cut out. It wasn't a dim, but it was as is someone was switching them off very quickly. The dash lights dimmed momentarily as well. Condition wise, the exterior temp was 60 degrees and other than the headlights and radio, nothing else was on. To make matters worse, there was a police crusier right in front of me and I could only imagine myself getting stopped for flashing my lights. So today, again driving back to work from lunch, the climate control system decided to blow hot air on one side. This time it was the passenger side. I didn't notice it at first since it wasn't blowing on me, but I noticed the interior seemed to be a bit warm even with the A/C on. So I put my hand over the center vents and noticed the passenger side one was blowing hot air. Played with the controls and nothing changed it. Driving the car later this evening, the system worked fine. So I have three problems which are totally intermittent which I now have to have checked. Who knows, maybe something else will come up by the time I get around to taking the car in. Whats scary is I'm actually starting to consider a Ford product as I'm seeing some very attractice lease deals on the Lincoln LS. Thus far, Cadillac dealers in this area are not offering heavily subsidised lease deals on the CTS like Lincoln is. If I can sell my Intrigue for what I owe, I'd almost be tempted to lease an LS for what is actually a bit less a month than what my Intrigue payment is. May also have to see if there are any good lease deals on the 9-3.
I lost my 1999 Intrigue these past February 2002, to some wacko without insurance.
My Intrigue parked at work peacefully minding it's own bezz, then a 1985 Astro Van came out from an exit highway ramp, went through a couple pine trees and knocking down a chain link fence, finally striking my car, my car bouncing off hitting 2 other parked cars.
Since my car got the firts impact in the left rear, it dented the rear frame of the car.
My insurance (without mentioning names "State Farm") declared my car a total loss.
Lucky for me less than 30 days earlier I had decided to switch insurance companies to that current one.
Yeah it was kind of weird seeing your pride and joy being taken away on a flat bed, knowing you won't be driving the Intrigue again but, hey life goes on and I was not inside of the Intrigue.
I finally went and got me a 1999 Aurora that I always wanted.
I have a 99; I've been toying with the idea of replacing the headlight bulbs with those "bright-white" halogen type lights. I've read the stories about the lights being too hot, and melting/blowing up. Also, of the brightness being due to a white/blue/reflective surface inside the bulb. Has anyone successfully tried these types of bulbs? I'm definitely not thrilled with the low-brightness yellowish light from the standard bulbs in my headlights now...Any advice would be appreciated!
Hi all I'm trying to sell my 99 Intrigue GX with the following options: Moonroof, power seat, keyless entry, silver/grey, 3.5L, 58,400 miles, new brakes/rotors and tires. I'm in central indiana.
How much should I realistically be asking for this car? There are similar cars on the "market" advertised anywhere from $10,500 to $12,500, which I know is way off. Judging from NADA and Edmunds, and the fact that it's in avg->good condition, I'm thinking about $8500. Any advise?
My own personal experience with ultra white or blue headlights was so-so. I got a pair for ~$15+shipping from an e-bay auction. They came nicely packages in a sealed container. I don't remember the exact numbers, but I remember the wattage rating on the bulbs being about 50% higher that the original bulbs they replaced. I installed the bulbs during the winter, and they lasted about 6 months until one went out. A friend told me he had a pair in his Grand Prix which lasted all of 3 weeks. YMMV
The driving enthusiast in me doesn't want to sell her...trust me, it's the accountant in me. She's the oldest car in my fleet. My wife recently opted to become a stay at home mom, so we only really NEED 1 car. Problem is, we have 3...a minivan which we love, a commuter car which is worth too much less than we owe to sell it, and the Intrigue...with the "spendy to fix if anything should go wrong" 3.5L.
It's the best damn driving car I've ever had, but at $4-500 a pop to fix stuff like fuel pressure regulators and cam sensors, I can't bear to keep it ;(
I can't tell you how interested I'd be in your car by next summer, if you were selling it then! Perfect car to create the OSV clone with!
Pricewise, I've looked just about everywhere, and for the car you described, I'd say $8,500-9,500. Probably on the lower end of that scale, but still possible to get more.
I never knew you could get a GX with a sunroof...I probably just missed something.
Well, you may be losing some longtime owners, but tonight you gained one. I am very proud to have purchased and taken delivery of my new Intrigue tonight. For those who don't remember, its a new 2002 Intrigue GL, Ruby Red, with the Sun and Sound package (featuring the power sunroof and the Bose 8-speaker RDS system), Precision Control Package and a rear spoiler (Intrigue is one of the few cars that I think look great with a spoiler), MSRP $27132. My final price was $18900, including rebates and $500 under dealer invoice. I received $10k for my 01 Alero ($1000 over KBB). So, I will have a lot more to share later, but I'm very excited about buying what I believe is the finest sedan that GM has ever built.
First congratulations on the new car. Since its new and still under warranty and this goes for anyone who still has their car under warranty, please read the posting I made under the "Intrigue Owners: Problems & Solutions" discussion" (Posting #108). I wish someone had warned me about how the GM system works while mine was still under warranty. If you start having a problem like mine, where they replace and fix the same problem over and over again, make sure you don't let the GM Reps put you off until the warranty is up. Its easier to fight it while its still under warranty.
mfletouva : Congrats! You may be one of the last new owners. I'll be around for a while (barring theft or the car being totalled) as the Intrigue is our main hauler and re-sale will not cover much more than I owe anyway. I'm sure you will love the car!!
beach15 : What a nightmare. I saw a similar Camry once when visiting Chicago. Make it stop.
redly_one : Sorry to hear you go but I understand as I have a growing family also. Our next vehicle will be a van/wagon/SUV and I'm not real excited as I am a car guy.

PCS cars have H rated tirs which will help a little in cornering but will be slightly firmer
in ride quality.

Fairfax, Kansas plant is one of the worst. Are they going to build the malibu?

Considered selling the Impala last week as I am trying to buy a house in NC.
I have a '87 Camaro and a '88 Caprice I can drive.
next car may be a GP, but am waiting for GM to get DOHC motors into their midsize offerings.

Sporty with a lot of room.
It will be at least a year or two before I'm in the market again. There should be lots of other good stuff out by then.
