PCS cars have H rated tirs which will help a little in cornering but will be slightly firmer
in ride quality.
I'm happy to report that they fixed both problems. The rattle was caused by something in the A-pillar; they took the whole thing apart and fixed it, and then as a preventative measure did the same on the passenger side. The whistling was caused by loose weatherstripping near the right side of the windshield.
So, I'm enjoying my quiet ride while it lasts. My car is a mid-late 90s generation GM product, after all.
What's funny is that you can tell that sometime in the late 90s, GM woke up and said, "hey, we have to start building higher quality vehicles". You can see this in even the Alero, which is a bit newer of a design. My Alero just had a "tighter" feel and was more solidly built than the Intrigue. With my latest problems, for example; the little gimmicky bits around the windows were replaced with giant thick pieces of weatherstripping that would NEVER come off.
I will admit, however, that since mine was built in the first couple months of production, they may have been paying "extra" attention for the first few thousand off the line.
Also the TL is due for a major revamp in 04.
I also like the looks of the Infinity G35, again a lot of car for the money. Especially when you compare them to some of the German offerings.
white6 : The Mazda 6 would definitely be a top contender if I needed a car in the next few months. The write up in the Toronto Star was glowing. My main reservation would be quality as people we know with a Mazda 626 have had a lot of issues.
I know there are a lot of people waiting for the "updated" CTS, but the current one is one heck of a car, 3.2 engine & current interior or not (I like both of them already). Start looking into what you can get for the one, and how much they'll take off the other...that's what we did with the 300M.
Good luck!
vcjumper : 6 looks good indeed. GM needs a car like that.
Fairfax, Kansas plant is one of the worst. Are they going to build the malibu?
malibu will have 240 hp and weigh less than Intigue. it should be pretty quick.
Quite a machine. In short, the handling is remarkably nimble for such a big car. It felt about the same size as the Alero in handling, but was much more spacious inside, at least up front. The 3.5 was clearly a different beast than the 3.4 The Alero's V6 is peppier off the start, but once you hit 30 mph the Intrigue just takes off. The Intrigue was quieter, more refined. The climate control system was nice and the Bose sound system was probably the best I've ever heard in a car. Rear seat room didn't seem to be much improved over the Alero, which is surprising since the Alero is pretty tight. The headliner was quite a bit different than the Alero, I can't tell if its higher quality or what. Btw, I love that little "Precision Control System" badge underneath the Oldsmobile badge on the back!
If the price is right, I was impressed enough with the car to make the deal. I am waiting to see if I will be eligible for the Oldsmobile Owner Loyalty deal. Apparently the cutoff was 12/13/00, and my Alero was purchased 12/27/00. However, the dealer was pretty confident that could be worked around, and Oldsmobile would just give it to me since the cutoff could actually be 12/31/00. Now, at the time of the Alero purchase, we used money from a '99 Eighty Eight to buy that, but that might still be applicable as well. We shall see. If that rebate goes through, than the car would cost somewhere around $18500, wtih $10k for the Alero. So for that deal...it would be tough to pass up. Dealer will know Monday on the Owner Loyalty rebate, and that will help me make a decision. So we shall see...in the meantime, if anyone else has thoughts on the car or the deal they offered, feel free to share!
Driving up here out of the city is beautiful this time of year. I'm taking a business trip to Wells, Maine next week and decided to drive it, should be an amazing voyage.
I've been looking, and have found quite a few 98'-99's in the 70-100k mileage range, for anywhere from $4,000-9,000. Around here (southern DE), I've seen some cheap used ones too, including a 98' GL that's green with leather for $4,395. Quite a good price, unless there's a lot of miles or problems. Still thinking of also making an OSV Intrigue clone, it might actually be good price-wise to start off with a used one with some miles on the clock.
What's the highest mileage anyone here has? Other than the clunky steering rack and gaunchy brakes, what are the other common 98'-99' issues?
If I had to get another car right now, I'd probably go with Impala and buy an aftermarket wood kit. GM seems to be pretty tight-lipped on future models. Not even leaks on replacement car except the next Grand Prix.
There are some pictures on the web but they are mostly Photoshop mods on Opel pictures. Should see something soon as it will be making a debut at the Detroit Auto Show in Jan.
mfletouva, hope your deal works out. Mine has the PCS package and has that "Precision Control System" badge on the rear. Is the one your looking at a GL or a GLS? I've only seen a couple of others on the road that have the PCS badge. My only hope is that you have a dealer which has a competent service department as mine is not and that has been the worst part of the ownership experience. Hopefully the dealer I am using now will be able to repair the problem once and for all and not have to keep the car two weeks and return it to me with body damage.
Or gminsidenews.com?
There was some info several weeks ago on both those sites about the malibu.
There will be a stretched version with a huge backseat that is adjustable. The Maxx version will be shorter than the sedan version though.
1. Leaking oil pan (happened 3 times, but finally fixed)
2. Chrome window trim started coming off (migrating)
It's only ever been taken in for those reasons, but in two weeks of driving, I also felt a clunk in the steering quite often, always when turning at low speeds, usually parking lots. That, and in those very hot weeks, the air conditioing never put much "cold" out, rather just being somewhat cool air. They only ever noticed the air conditioning issue though.
That, and my grandfather hated the Badyear Eagle LS tires. 30k miles, and they were almost down to nothing, and were noisy with a degrading ride to boot. He kept saying Michelin, and from what I heard, he put a new set on this past month. Can't wait to see what it's like now....
My Intrigue parked at work peacefully minding it's own bezz, then a 1985 Astro Van came out from an exit highway ramp, went through a couple pine trees and knocking down a chain link fence, finally striking my car, my car bouncing off hitting 2 other parked cars.
Since my car got the firts impact in the left rear, it dented the rear frame of the car.
My insurance (without mentioning names "State Farm") declared my car a total loss.
Lucky for me less than 30 days earlier I had decided to switch insurance companies to that current one.
Yeah it was kind of weird seeing your pride and joy being taken away on a flat bed, knowing you won't be driving the Intrigue again but, hey life goes on and I was not inside of the Intrigue.
I finally went and got me a 1999 Aurora that I always wanted.

Thanks!
I'm trying to sell my 99 Intrigue GX with the following options:
Moonroof, power seat, keyless entry, silver/grey, 3.5L, 58,400 miles, new brakes/rotors and tires.
I'm in central indiana.
How much should I realistically be asking for this car? There are similar cars on the "market" advertised anywhere from $10,500 to $12,500, which I know is way off. Judging from NADA and Edmunds, and the fact that it's in avg->good condition, I'm thinking about $8500. Any advise?
I don't know US prices so can't comment on the asking.
K
It's the best damn driving car I've ever had, but at $4-500 a pop to fix stuff like fuel pressure regulators and cam sensors, I can't bear to keep it ;(
Pricewise, I've looked just about everywhere, and for the car you described, I'd say $8,500-9,500. Probably on the lower end of that scale, but still possible to get more.
I never knew you could get a GX with a sunroof...I probably just missed something.
Considered selling the Impala last week as I am trying to buy a house in NC.
I have a '87 Camaro and a '88 Caprice I can drive.
next car may be a GP, but am waiting for GM to get DOHC motors into their midsize offerings.
First congratulations on the new car. Since its new and still under warranty and this goes for anyone who still has their car under warranty, please read the posting I made under the "Intrigue Owners: Problems & Solutions" discussion" (Posting #108). I wish someone had warned me about how the GM system works while mine was still under warranty. If you start having a problem like mine, where they replace and fix the same problem over and over again, make sure you don't let the GM Reps put you off until the warranty is up. Its easier to fight it while its still under warranty.
beach15 : What a nightmare. I saw a similar Camry once when visiting Chicago. Make it stop.
redly_one : Sorry to hear you go but I understand as I have a growing family also. Our next vehicle will be a van/wagon/SUV and I'm not real excited as I am a car guy.
Sporty with a lot of room.
It will be at least a year or two before I'm in the market again. There should be lots of other good stuff out by then.
