sda - I replaced the same DLR bulb a couple of months ago and had exactly the same comments about the design of the light assembly! However I was not able to find a replacement bulb at 3 local stores I went to and ended up paying about $11.00 at the dealer (as I recall). Where did you buy 2 for $5.00 ???

    SDA,
Don't you know it's vacation-time-o-the-year? That may explain the dearth of postings. : )

I just thought I would let everyone know that I drove to my family vacation this past weekend, from DC to central OH. I averaged at least 30 mpg in highway driving at about 70 mph average. That's amazing to me. I have a 99 GL with the 3.5, and I've heard that the gear ratio for my year doesn't lend itself to these types of numbers. Man, the EPA is conservative about its assigned numbers!
  • oldsman01oldsman01 Member Posts: 1,203
My 01 GLS has the PCS package so it has the 3.29 ratio and it would probably get 30 mpg on the highway if I set the cruise and left it. My problem is when I pass someone, I love to dip into that seemingly endless well of power. And there goes my fuel economy. But hey, gas is cheap(compared to many other parts of the world) and you only live once. I still typically average around 26 mpg on the road so thats no too bad.

A couple of days ago, I did the GM 24 hour test drive on a Cadillac CTS. Needless to say, the Intrigue certainly felt a bit different after driving the CTS for 24 hours. I will say though, the Intrigue's handling is still pretty good even compared to the RWD CTS with it's nearly even 50/50 front to rear weight distribution. Aside from the ride which was much smoother than the Intrigue's, the CTS's most enjoyable attribute was it's 5 speed automatic transmission. Unlike the Intrigue's slushbox, it ALWAYS had the right gear and never did one of those harsh downshifts when you nail the gas. I can only imagine what the Intrigue's 3.5 would have been like had it been mated to a transmission like that. While it(my Intrigue) was discounted big time, it was still hard to swallow the fact that the sticker on the CTS I had(base model w no options) was only 2K more than the sticker on my Intrigue was. The CTS was clearly in a different class of car. And frankly, worth every penny of that extra $2K. I think one of the problems Olds had in selling the Intrigue was it's overinflated stikcer price. If they had priced them at their real value(low to mid 20s) and not had all the rebates and discounts, the car would have probably sold much better.

I bought a 2 pack of replacement bulbs for (daylight running lights/front turn signal bulb) around $5 at AutoZone. I believe the number is part number is 4157. The bulb number is listed in the owner's manual.

You think this thread is slow you should see the Impala thread. And this is a car that is now selling at the rate of 200,000 a year. How many Intrigues have been sold this year? maybe 10?
  • javidoggjavidogg Member Posts: 366
I believe the correct part number is 3157 for the DLR lightbulbs, I hate to think someone is going to walk into an Auto part store and ask for a 4157 bulb that does not excist.

    Peace.
  • moonshadowmoonshadow Member Posts: 256
The 4157 does exist! At least the one that i have in my hand exist. As well as the others i have placed in other cars.

It is a dual filament, orange covered, flat sided plastic base bulb.

    Peace
  • javidoggjavidogg Member Posts: 366
I had never really heard of that bulb size,

it must be like the 3057 and 3157 size that are almost the same,

I guess 4157 is another one of them,

I wonder if it's a Canadian part number or the same number goes for U.S. bulb sizes.

Oldsman01,I was lurking over at the CTS board and read post #4072 that you wrote about having your car serviced at your local Oldsmobile dealership. Since you have mentioned that you live in East TN, is that dealer by chance Rice Buick/GMC/Olds in Knoxville? If it is, I would like to talk with you further about your experiences and impressions of this dealership. I bought a Collector's Edition Aurora there a couple months ago and I am around your age. I would like to discuss this off-line via email if you don't mind. I don't think that this group is the appropriate forum to discuss a particular Olds dealer in great detail. My email address is located in my profile. Please send me your email address if you don't mind. If you do, I will not bother you further. Thanks for reading this and responding via email if you so choose to.Bryant

In my previous post, I indicated that the above dash lights as well as "engine service soon" came on and went off after I restarted the motor. Now when I restart, the above two lights come on and stay on while I drive. Also, the steering and acceleration seem sluggish. I called the dealer (from my cell phone while driving)and offered to bring the car in so they could see the lights and thus avoid the "we cant replicate b.s. defense". Unfortunately, non one was in to check it out, and they merely made an appoinment for next week. The service guy on the phone seem to think it was either the brakes or a bearing, and said i could continue to drive. Fortunatley I have a second vehicle and I have elected to park the Intrigue untill the appointment. I am suspicious that this is a decreased voltage side effect from when they replaced my alternator to fix the flickering (fluckering?) lights. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

after your post i got to thinking and tracked down this site listing specs for the S8 wedge design that we are discussing.

    http://www.sylvania.com/auto/s8.htm

You can download the specification file 349KB (pdf) need adobe acrobat.

I looked at the bulb in my 2001 trig and it was a 4157NAK. If you got good eyes you can read it through the front lens. The book calls for 4157NAK

From the file this is a long life heavy duty Natural Amber Krypton. Hence the NAK

From the file you can also see that the 3157 that you mention is indeed very close, however , it shows to be a standard bulb, shorter life, and has a slightly lower amperage major filament . Which may affect the flashing rate of the signal light.

I was unable to decipher the mscp column. Maybe someone else has some insight .

They show two 4157's, 4157k and 4157nak. One with amber coating and the other without, both are krypton filled. Except for the mscp and the lumens output, they are the same. I would assume that the higher luminosity of the 4157K would be due to a clear bulb.

I checked out another trig and it had a black base with 4157kNA stamped on the edge. Which is the same even though the lettering is arranged differently. Geeesss, I thought a bulb was a bulb, more or less, Gonna hav'to pay more attention from now on.

I will go check my auto shop to see what bulbs they are dispensing to me for replacement. Perhaps ian18 could have a look-see at his bulb for the actual complete markings. I am aware that he may of been supplied a different manufacturer and hence the markings may be different at the tail end.

I am curious as to why ian had to pay so much as my supplier has two for 5 bucks or so CDN.( thats almost free for you americans)

    Good luck

oldsman : Thinking of pulling the trigger soon?

coonhound : Sorry about the Alero. You have the 2.4L? I am glad we waited for the Ecotec, it's been a gem of a motor, kind of like a 4 cyl version of the 3.5 in my mind. I'm probably going to invest in a K&N for it soon, may as well get as much as I can out of it.

    ;-)
  • javidoggjavidogg Member Posts: 366
I checked on the Sylvania website for the fitment guide for the front parking lights for the Intrigue it had a number of 4157NALL, I gues that means all 4157's, I thought by looking at the base of the bulb that it was 3157 base, I guess I was wrong, will have to actually take a closer look.
  • moonshadowmoonshadow Member Posts: 256
I believe the LL is for "Long Life". and the na is "Natural amber"

They seem to have a lot of designations.

My father in law bought a Lincoln LS with the V8. What a nice, nice ride.. the interior is about as nice as my Maxima's (much better than the CTS, IMO), and it has GUTS. Too bad it's roughly $35,000. :)
  • redline65redline65 Member Posts: 693
Finally got my crazy turn signal problems fixed. It turns out there was a loose ground wire somewhere in the package shelf behind the rear seat. Probably came loose when I was stuffing the trunk for a trip last year, who knows.

Dealer also replaced the external temperature sensor that was causing my climate control to display 20 degrees cooler than actual temperature.

Wish to rant about dealer labor rates, but this probably isn't the right forum for that...
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
I have nothing but praise for the Intrigue trunk design. We stuffed the thing to the top last week on vacation and could close it like very few other cars could.
  • oldsman01oldsman01 Member Posts: 1,203
35K for an LS V8 is not bad as they can easily list in the mid 40s. Definitely a different class of car.
  • focusfocus Member Posts: 225
I have turn off the traction control a few times when the weather is sunny and dry and notice a much higher rpm when pushed.
Does anyone know what limit the traction control has on everyday driving? Any story on your driving experience with traction control off would be welcomed.
  • lmacmillmacmil Member Posts: 1,758
...detects wheel slip and either applies the brakes to the slipping wheel or may cut the engine momentarily until wheel slip is no longer detected. It doesn't care if the wheel slip is due to low friction conditions or too much power. It should have no effect on everyday driving as long as you're not spinning the tires.
  • bravedavebravedave Member Posts: 100
The brake booser on my 98 3800 Intrigue went bad last week. She has almost 109k miles now. The replacement cost was $600. YIKES !!! I guess all the ABS/traction control components add to the cost & complexity.

BUT, that is the first major problem this car has ever had. Considering the mileage and my hard driving style, I can live with that for now. Now, if the thing starts to nickel and dime me to death, I may change my mind and proceed with replacing the car. But, not having a car payment sure is nice :)
  • lmacmillmacmil Member Posts: 1,758
A brake booster alone shouldn't be more than $150-200. It's totally independant of the ABS system. I'd ask for a more thorough explanation of exactly what the problem is with the booster. If they really want $600 for a new one, I'd call a junk yard and see if they have one.

Did you lose all power assist?
  • moonshadowmoonshadow Member Posts: 256
perhaps $600 smackers included install and brake fluid change and bleed? Parts, shop supplies, allowable gouge rate and taxs, Maybe ?

We all know dealer runs about a zillion bucks an hour.
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
If I can only put $600 into my car for repairs with those miles I'll be happy.

I know I will need new tires next summer. Goodyears are fine for another 30K kms though
  • bravedavebravedave Member Posts: 100
The $600 included the parts and installation/labor. I did not lose complete braking power, as slow gradual stops were easy. However, slamming the brakes did not produce the desired grabbing effect-- instead there was a loud hissing sound coming from the brake petal assembly which was not normal--- also the brake feel was much more mushy than normal--- and the stopping distance was much longer. I am delighted to get this fixed before it became a more serious safety threat. Had I ignored it, it would have gotten worse.
  • lmacmillmacmil Member Posts: 1,758
The rear seal probably failed which resulted in a vacuum leak and reduced boost. Normal around town stops require only 25% or so of the booster's total boost which is why they were OK. In a panic or hard stop, the max boost was not available which would have increased pedal effort and stopping distance. The price still seems high to me based on what I know the OEM price to be but maybe the standard hours allowed to R&R it are more than I think.

Did a quick trip to Atlanta last weekend and again, was impressed with how well this car does on the road. I will need some new shoes before my trip to Chicago this fall though as I could tell the car does not grip as well and the tires are getting really noisy. Did the trip in just a bit over 3 hours and did get her up to 90 a couple of times, but traffic was just too heavy to sustain a high rate of speed for long. I'm really starting to understand why road rage is becoming a problem, people truly do not know common driving courtesy. You know, things like slower traffic keeping right, using turn signals, not tailgating, etc. I'm not an agressive driver, but I do tend to drive a little fast on the open road and nothing makes me more mad than a left lane bandit that just won't get over or speed up. I mean, if I see a car fast approaching me in the rear I either get over or speed up. And I don't try to keep up with cars that I know I cannot(i.e. Corvettes, M3s, etc). I really get amazed(and scared) at how some people drive their minivans and SUVs like they are sports cars. One lady in a Sienna minivan who was blocking the left lane must not have liked it when I passed her in the right lane then got back over so she speeds up and rides my bumper. Whats worse is she has the van full of kids and she stays with me at 85 mph or so until the road has a pretty sharp curve, the she backs off. Once the road was straigh again, here she comes and then tries to pass me in the right lane. About the time we're neck and neck the interstate has another curve and she has to slow down. I think that one must have scared her(as even the Intrigue had some fairly serious body roll at those speeds) as she didn't try to pass me again. I wasn't trying to race or anything, in fact I had the cruise set at about 85. I don't know if she was trying to show off her kids and minivan or what, but whatever this lady was trying to do was purely stupid and dangerous. I know the limits of my car and I don't push them. But you'd be surprised at the stupid things I see people in vans and SUVs doing. I swear, I think I just about lost my religion several times on this trip from all the obscene remarks I had about some of the people I encountered on the road. Thank goodness my girlfriend wasn't in the car to hear my rants:)

Oh yeah, I just realized that I recently passed the 2 year mark with my Intrigue. Just turned over 34K today. It's been a quick two years and hard to imagine all that has happened(both to me and in the world) in that amount of time. I still remember the warm sunny July day I drove her home from the dealership with 11 miles on the odo. My first brand new car.
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
We bought our Intrigue in my home town (2 1/2 hours away) so my first drive was home on the freeway at 120 km/h +. I fell in love instantly and still have no regrets.

Still thinking about and 04 CTS?
  • evandroevandro Member Posts: 1,108
We spent last week on the beach, 4h from our home. It goes without saying that it was a blast!

And the Intrigue contributed a lot to it, thanks to the most quiet tires I've ever had, the Yokohama Avid Touring I shoed the Olds with about a month ago.

However, mileage was lower at 26MPG than our last trip at 32MPG. I guess it was because of the slow down when the highway got in small towns and there were some traffic lights.

I usually favor state highways over interstates because it's just more pleasurable to drive on them: the view is often picturesque and there are almost no trucks. The drawbacks are, as I said, sparse towns that the highway goes through and those darn mobile homes that occupy 2 traffic lanes.

This car is a pleasure to drive.
  • redline65redline65 Member Posts: 693
Mine recently hit the 4-year mark, with almost 55K miles on the ODO. This was my first brand new car too. I clayed and waxed her over the weekend, she's nice and shiny now.

I'm really happy with how well the paint and trim on this car has held up, much better than any other car I've owned. The interior still looks practically brand new. People are always commenting on how new my car looks, inside and out.

By the way, #9812 was kind of tough to read. Try using more paragraph breaks, LOL!
  • oldsman01oldsman01 Member Posts: 1,203
Oh yeah, I'm still thinking about an 04 CTS. I'll likely wait until later in the year or even early next year before taking the plunge.

redline65, sorry about the run on sentences. I guess it's not a good idea to type a message late in the evening after a couple glasses of wine:)

My 2000 GL is approaching 36000 miles (35350), so the 3/36 warranty will expire. I have had the ISS lube, and (so far)the car does not have the dreaded headlight flicker. Looking for friendly advice: what items should I check so I can have addressed before the warranty expires? I think I have a general idea, but I am open to suggestions. Thanks!

If you've ever experienced hesitation or rough starting you might want to get your crankshaft sensors checked out.

Look at the trim above the front doors to see if it's migrating backwards, your doors will start sticking eventually. Dealer has a permanent fix for this.

If you haven't taken a trip in a while make sure the cruise control is functioning properly. Test all power locks and windows too.

If your trunk or hood air shocks aren't opening well have those replaced.

Had the one on the right front replaced TWICE and it STILL moves. I think all they did was what I do - tap it with a hammer until it's in place.

I have an issue with the driver's door alignment. Need to find someonw who can adjust it for me.

My teachers were right all those years ago - I DON'T pay attention in class.

Is it "normal" or accepted practice to replace the Eagle LS after 30K miles? Got the oil changed Saturday and asked if they could rotate the tires. They barely pass the penny test. I've owned the car since 1/99 (it's a very late 98 production) and have maintained proper inflation and rotation except for the last year - never drove the car much until recently.

Replaced one tire in January after a belt separation caused the tire to go out of round. Now I need three more.

did the same on my 1998 intrigue when I owned it. just tapped it back down the tracking with a hammer.

They should be gluing it in place, there is a permanent fix for this problem.

My Eagle LS's were replaced around 33K miles. If anyone finds a tire that will go 50K+ miles on the Intrigue, let me know. Of course your driving habits and road conditions will have an impact on tread life.

Thanks for the advice about items to have checked before my 3/36 warranty expires.

I replaced the Goodyear Eagle LS tires at 28000. Though they had tread, the previous owner didn't rotate them and they had gotten quite noisy. New tires made all the difference in noise reduction.

Oldsman01, I read over in the CTS forum your Intrigue is in for service. What are you having done this time???

Tirerack suggests the Continential CintiTouring (at $82 each) or the Continental ContiExtreme Contact (at $80 each) as replacements for the Eagle LS (at $85 each). Are the Continentals worth it? I'm not looking to spoend a fortune on shoes and was ready to pay the $85 for three new LSs.

How does Tirerack work? They ship the tires to to your house and you find a place to mount them? Never used a service like this before - always just pulled in a tire warehouse and picked out what I wanted.

Maybe I can get them cheaper at COSCO.....?

My 2000 GL just turned 80,000 kilometres (48,000 miles) this weekend. The original Goodyear LS's still have probably another 10,000 Kms to go but just for the heck of it I checked with a Goodyear dealer in Winnipeg what the replacement cost for 4 LS tires would be.
He quoted me just over $1000 which included balancing and installation. I can't get over the prices you guys in the States can buy tires for!!
I also checked out the price for Michelins newest tire - the HydroEdge which has replaced the X-one. I was given a price of $155 installed and balanced which is not bad in Cda for a Michelin.
  • b4zb4z Member Posts: 3,372
Love my Michelin Harmony's. $106 from tire rack.
  • ian18ian18 Member Posts: 133
I ran my OEM Goodyear RSA's until 64,000 miles! I replaced them with Firestone Affinity LH 30's, a reasonably priced "H" rated tire with a high mileage warranty. After 10,000 miles I am very satisfied.
  • oldsman01oldsman01 Member Posts: 1,203
Anybody had to have their power steering rack replaced? Several days ago I began getting a "rubbing" type noise coming from the sterring column when making a right turn and when making sharp turns at slow speeds(such as when parallel parking or backing in a parking space) I lost power assist to the steering. Took the car in today and they said the P/S rack needed to be replaced and they had to order one. So the love/hate relationship continues. At least I got my car back to drive while waiting on the part. By 60K, I'd love to see how much money GM pays in warranty claims on this car. Maybe I should go ahead and pull the trigger on a CTS.
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
donp9 : You are getting hosed. The tires can be had for a lot less than that. I paid C$180 (incl balancing) for one replacement and I'm sure I could have done better if I bought all 4.

oldsman : Ack! We had the intermediate shaft lubed but that's it. Man you have a jinxed car!
  • white6white6 Member Posts: 588
Tirerack.com has "recommended installers" search engine on their site. Do a search to find an installer in your area. I purchased a set of Goodyear Regatta II's for my 99GL and have been very happy with them. Tirerack is advertising them in 225-60-16 size for $71 in the September issue of Road&Track.
  • dekesterdekester Member Posts: 322
I see a place near me listed as a "drop Ship Agent". Does that mean they'll deliver the tires directly to them and I just go in and have them mounted?

The Regatta II - any better than the LS? I've never had to replace tires so soon any any car I've owned, new or used.

I need good wet/snow traction, long tread life. Noise doesn't bother me - I've lived with the LSs long enough, I don;t even hear them!

    Hi All
Been Quite awhile since I have been to the board,
but figured I would update my reports.
Overall still happy with the intrigue, Replaced
goodyear LS'S at 60,000 less then 3/32 tread left
with 4 New PERELLI P6000's , this was the deal of the year my brother in law owns a tire and alignment shop and managed to pick these up for $ 125 dollars each installed and balanced as they are being discontinued, ( What can I say absolutly awesome rubber phenominal grip dry & wet speed rated, incredibly smooth & Quite Ride) Gave the intrigue a completely new driving personality.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED For The Intrigue if you can
afford them. Did Brakes at the same time, the original front rotors were absolute JUNK There
were Chucks the size of a quarter 1/8th of an inch
deep missing from the inside of the front rotor absolute trash :( The front sideds of these rotors looked new, Replace front rotors with
some BEAR vented rotors and put new high performance ceramic/metalic pads on all four wheels great Improvement over stock braking,
Rotors= 150 Each Pads = 210 for the set front & rear, again Highly recommended over The OEM garbage. Asside from that did a bunch of routine
maintainance stuff, Tranny Filter & flush, Brake fluid flush, fuel / air filter/ cabin air/ect,ect.
Cleaned fuel system and throttle body. The Green
Hornet ( intrigue) is Running awesome again.
    So My Basic History is
1000KM- CK engine- disconnected vac line
8000KM ABS- Replace rear hub Faulty sensor
     20,000KM ISS Shaft Replace
35,000KM ISS Shaft LUBE OK Since
55,000KM new tie rod ends both sides
60,000KM Tires, Brakes, and a bunch of preventitive maintainance.
Fingers Crossed ALTernator has been ok so far
not looking forward to that job if it does go.

P.S. Found a complete step by step Guide for alternator replacement at the following Location
