Hey...That new Camry looks awesome! It's about time they figured out that it doesn't HAVE to look boring!

I predict that if Honda continues its styling in the conservative mode that the new Camry will clean Accord's clock.

jjpowell2-----spent a couple years at UofA back in the 50s, great time was had by all.

bz4------still waiting on the update of rattle free motoring after the control arm retrofit!!! Was it a dream or didn't it work???

Hope the alternator problem gets solved because I will get mine under the extended warranty..Didn't have problem during the 3/36 so I get the grief later..
  • vcjumpervcjumper Member Posts: 1,110
Drove another couple hundred kilometres today with the strut tower brace installed. Over small cracks/crevices in road surface when going slow speed, the car doesn't go through quite the kerthump it used to. No idea why and maybe this is just placebo effect. Anyways I'm picking up the front brace tomorrow if time allows.

71ss: There is something loose up there that only makes itself known on the bigger bumps.

Can't quite figure it out, but the noise is definitely eminating from the left side only.

The popping sound is just as bad as ever. Of course, we all know that it can only be stopped by lubing the jounce bumpers. for a month at least.

So far this board is batting almost a 1000 when it comes to diagnosing intrigue problems. Much better than my dealer.

I almost forgot. BOTH control arms were replaced last year. I can't understand how one could go bad again.
  • b4zb4z Member Posts: 3,372
oscarz: Do you have the patent on the color of your blue....i mean green intigue? Cool color.
  • 71ss71ss Member Posts: 39
b4z----Somebody at the dealer is stroking GM and getting paid for those dumb replacements.. It's amazing the way life goes at times..

Talked with the service mgr this day and he wanted to know if they could scrap my old exhaust system as yet..He recommended a speed shop in Detroit that sells the chip to eliminate the top end limiter plus improve the overall upper end.. he also recommended the K&N filter..

Getting a little miffed at the car for the tires are up for replace along with paying for the warranty; looking at approx $1500 bucks to stuff in a rat hole..

With an Intrigue+1500; there isn't much to buy; maybe a 4 banger Civic. Depressing situation especially at only 39k miles.. Oh well, tax day is always a downer and this was no exception..

    CHECK THIS OUT!!!

I didn't even know there was an aftermarket body kit for the intrigue. Halladay Motors is in Scottsbluff, Nebraska.

I like the rocker panels. You guys probably remember how much i hate the cheap black plastic rocker mouldings that are on the car now. Give me body color rocker mouldings anyday.

I wonder who makes the body kit on the car halladay is selling?
  • b4zb4z Member Posts: 3,372
I just found it on nbci.com. The manufacturer of the kit is razzi. Don't really like the front or back treatment. Too boy racer.
  • redly_oneredly_one Member Posts: 122
b4z- The body kit looks like something off of a Bonneville!

71ss- I was actually asking if anyone with the flicker problem also had a COOLANT leak. Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't the water pump sit just above the alternator. I have noticed a pink non-oily spot on the driveway that disappears after a few days. Also, my coolant was low. I haven't climbed under to see where or what is leaking.

GAS: Paid 75 cents/liter this weekend, up from 65 last week. Big oil companies screw us again for a long weekend. Beautiful long weekend with the Intrigue. Good mileage and smooth as silk on the 401!

jgriff : Kind and gentle return I see. How's the Honda?

    71ss : I miss 1415. It's just not the same. ;-)
  • one2oneone2one Member Posts: 626
b4z, thanks for the info. I must say, the 3800's performance at higher speeds has been noticeable. While cruising at 80mph, a mash on the gas provides immediate power reminicient of the 3.5 although not as strong. It's gotten more fun to drive than before. Highway driving is very lively. I would love to see what a K&N would do for 3.5. Starting seems to have gotten smoother. It still sometimes cranks more than I think it needs to but it does feel better starting. Though I wouldn't recommend going out and changing to the K&N for that. Perhaps it's all in my head :-)

jjpowell2::: I posed the question a while back: "Would GM keep Olds if sales increased?" Guess the answer is "no". With all the incentives they're loosing money. But I hoped that someone in the executive lounge had a bright idea and tried to capitolize on this as a way to keep the division alive. Leave it to GM to mess up a good thing.

Is anyone experiencing rough shifts into over drive with their Intrigue ? My 98 shifts part way followed by very brief upward RPM spike ( about 200 rpm ) and then completes the shift. This only happens during the initial shift into O/D from speeds below 50 MPH. If I take my foot off the gas and then resume speed the shift is smooth so long as vehicle speed does'nt drop below 45. Dealer service says this is normal for this car. Seems odd. Feels like a double shift. It's always been like this since new. Can anyone comment on this ? Thanks.

2002 Camry::: I actually kind of like it! The first shot reminds me of a Buick Century/Regal. If I look at the back of it long enough it also reminds me of the current Maxima. Looks like Toyota is finally starting to give us some style. Give the car some decent power and handling ability and I might just give it a look. Hopefully they will follow the example set by Chrysler and bring it into production just as the concept looks.

Word to Toyota: Don't strip the car down to a boring shell. And don't go over the deep end. Don't do an "Aztek" or a "Honda" to the new Camry!
  • one2oneone2one Member Posts: 626
a4naxent::: Sounds like the car is hunting for gears. I can't say that I remember my 98 doing that. But I do recall feeling it downshift around that speed when I floor it.

    Just my take.
  • etharmonetharmon Member Posts: 399
The new Camry looks okay from the pics, but they are going to have to slash production to get me to buy one. Translation, I don't want to drive something that I see a dozen of in every parking lot. Thats what I like about the Intrigue. You see some around, but no where near as many as you do Camrys, Accords, Tauri, Caravans, etc. To me, if a car sells more than 100,000 models a year, I sort of lose interest.
  • b4zb4z Member Posts: 3,372
shifting: If i try to cruise in the low 40 mph range it will sometimes act if can't make up its mind if it should be in 4th or if the torque convertor should lock up or not.

Sounds like yours is doing the same thing. I am assuming you have the 3.05 gear which would put your shift into the mid 40 to high 40 mph range.
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
etharmon : I agree, I don't want to be driving "what everyone else is driving". I like lower production vehicles and that is exactly why I will never buy an Accord, Taurus or Camry. My Intrigue always garners attention with it's sleek looks. Can't say the same for my buddy's Accord.
  • jgriffjgriff Member Posts: 362
Ditto on the lower production models.

But I will opt to follow the sheep, if it means a lot less "problems".
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
I guess you must be a sheep then cause you bought into the Honda flock.
  • vcjumpervcjumper Member Posts: 1,110
Actually the Intrigue is from the biggest flock of all for now in GM and there are more Intrigues on the road than Acura CL's.

Finally got the oil changed today at a "sleepy time" stand alone Olds dealer..The oil change was quick; so didn't get much salesperson time which is probably just as well.

They had a inventory of 30 Intrigues--no GLS models due to upper pricing limits. It was explained to me; but I was only half listening..It appears the GLS option is the catch basin for all items..including OnStar as a std along with the Faux woodgrain and the mirror compass. With the Precision Sport Package GLS you get everything except block heater, Gold emblem pkg, and Bose..

The new Bravada is a sweetheart; too bad it got off to a bumpy start.. The 360 SUV chassis will also be used for the SSR and one other new SUV coming out in 03. As you all know there will be a V-8 model with additional seating for the Chevy and GMC versions starting later in the 02 year..

I will not see another dealer until 3k more miles; so it will be the last of May before I get near a dealer--I hope!!!

Now I must start after those stupid tires..
  • 71ss71ss Member Posts: 39
jgriff---you have an Acura CL 2.0 or 3.0??? That was the first Acura breakaway out of Marysville. The 2.0 didn't set any records and the 3.0 was a must do; just to save face.. I hope I have the engine sizes right for I don't pay alot of attention to what Honda does.. Maybe the CL is the 3.2 and the plain Acura is the 2 or 3.. Would somebody set me on the right course???
  • vcjumpervcjumper Member Posts: 1,110
Nowadays comes only with the 3.2... 232hp or 260hp.
  • vcjumpervcjumper Member Posts: 1,110
Saw a Trailblazer at a dealership today, nice looking vehicle. Have they figured out how to fix them?
  • 71ss71ss Member Posts: 39
vcjumper----thanks for the info on Acuras..are you staying out of trouble in Ontario land??

The fix for the SUV will be forthcoming and as I understand the assembly plant should be back on stream by Thursday.
  • vcjumpervcjumper Member Posts: 1,110
Was disappointed today when I went to RS Motorsports (www.rsmracing.com) as they were supposed to have a strut tower bar to fit the Intrigue (hmm maybe if I stiffen it up the front end noises will stay away longer). Their GTP bar doesn't fit so they will have to custom make one. No extra charge but they'll have to measure the car up for half an hour then I'll come back in a week's time to test out what they build. If others want one, let me know and I'll make sure they keep the recipe/give you contact info. It is a chrome bar.

While I was there they were working on a supercharged Fiero. My Intrigue is the first shortstar motor they have seen (they do work on Auroras and lots of the old 3.4L dohc W-bodies), they were pretty curious.
  • b4zb4z Member Posts: 3,372
Doesn't slp have two different strut tower braces that will fit the intrigue?
    Try slponline.com
  • vcjumpervcjumper Member Posts: 1,110
One bar (the cheaper one) at SLP is the GM Bar which is standard in the Regal that you can get at any dealership (I bought this bar for $22cdn from the dealer and put it in the back as it doesn't require drilling any holes in the rear application).

The other bar should fit but it is $30cdn+shipping/duties more than what I'm paying RSM..

Anyone wants to see some of the different suspension parts specs on the different W-body cars, check out this link

    W-Body Parts List

  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
Ya... but all Honda's look the same. At least GM gives each of it's sedans a different look/ feel/ personality.
  • jgriffjgriff Member Posts: 362
Mine is the 2001 Acura CL 3.2 225hp. I thought about the 240 Type-S [a little stiff on the ride], maybe on the next TL version.
  • 71ss71ss Member Posts: 39
Anyone replaced the LSs with the Firestone SH-30s?
They are about $25.00 cheaper/tire; but then they could be subject to recall!! Compared to the MichXGT-H4..

jgriff---I assume the CL is a coupe--wife's car???
Didn't the first Acura CLs come out as a 2.0??? Speaking of the Marysville plant production only.
  • yurakmyurakm Member Posts: 1,345
I have them on my 98 Malibu for 6 months, and like the tires very much. Excellent dry traction, and absolutely outstanding wet cornering. Will put them on my 2000 Regal, after the OEM Eagle LS will expire.

Though, the SH-30 are a bit more stiff. Am not sure this is so good with concrete slab roads.

This Monday I had a trip on the slab NY highways - Westchester county and NY City - and the bombed-out Brooklyn streets . Suspension creaked. Though, I failed to check inflation after the car was serviced Saturday. It turned to be, mechanic overinflated the tires to 6 psi above the manufacturer recommendation, vs. my usual 3 psi.

As to recall, I would not expect it with the tires.

The recalled Explorer tires had only C heat rating - the minimal legally acceptable for USA. This is like 3/32 inch tire thread: still legal, but not safe.

The SH-30 are designed / manufactured to much higher ratings: H for speed (130 mph) and A for heat. Very wide safety margins with 80 mph driving. Much wider than with Eagle LS tires. They have "only" T or S rating for speed: 118 or 112 mph, and B rating for heat.

I think I have already posted this and you probably won't be interested anyway, but...
I put a set of Goodyear Aquatread III's on my Intrigue about 1500 miles ago. I have been very imnpressed. They are quieter, ride better, and are just as smooth (balanced) as the LS's. tirerack.com survey put them heads and tails above anything else in their category. These are NOT, however, performance tires; though I have noticed no degradation in steering/handling. Plus, it is a 80,000 mile tire! Of course, my tire guy had to go to Indiana to find the last 225-60/16 in existence; said Goodyear underestimated demand and more of this size won't be available until June.
vcjumper: I'm also VERY interested in the strut tower brace stuff. Please keep us informed!
  • jgriffjgriff Member Posts: 362
Nope CL is mine, until I grow tired of it and find my next dream machine. And then the wife will move into the CL.

We are trying to switch out ONE car every 4-6 years, now back to ONE car payment per household, instead of TWO.
  • j_colemanj_coleman Member Posts: 143
jgriff - sounds like you are playing hand-me-down to the wife. Is she happy about always getting a used car?

We have one car payment by financing for 36 months and keeping each car for 7 years or so. One payment is nice!

When will the CL and TL have the 260 hp engine standard?
  • 71ss71ss Member Posts: 39
yurakm---thanks for the response on the SH-30s and the reminder of the stiff sidewalls versus the concrete slabs.. The Intrigue suspension is firm enough to hold the stiff sidewalled tire to road; but it would be a noisy venture.. To really enjoy the benefits of a HP tire the car suspension has to be compatible for the setup.. The Malibu nor the Regal is such an animal; but if it is not sustained high speed thenthe suspension can handle.

white6----The warranty sounds interesting and the sidewalls are probably flexible enough to deaden the harshness; but stiff enough to handle okay..I remember you telling us and I forgot about the tire.. I will look into it.. The best wearing tire I ever had was a Eagle GT+4; threw them away at 75K miles; was original equipment on a new 89 6000 SE Pontiac which replaced the STE..

Got to go buy some ice cream!!!
  • b4zb4z Member Posts: 3,372
Left a message for the service manager to call me tomorrow about his inability to fix my car. We will see if he bothers to call me, since they haven't really bothered to check deeply into my car's problems. 3500 miles to go until the warranty is over.

Went to best buy since nobody is buying houses right now.
Bought Lawrence of Arabia. 35 bucks, the most i have ever spent on a dvd. It looks pretty good, but the transfer is from an interpositive, not the negative. So it is a little grainy. Not sure if it is worth that much money though.

Also bought the Keb' Mo' "Sessions at west 54th"
concert dvd. An incredible sounding recording. Blows away the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac dvd's in sound quality. Keb' Mo' is probably my favorite musician right now.

A guy driving a Chrysler LHS was dicing with me this afternoon on the Cooper River Bridge going into downtown Charleston............when will they ever learn.

Well a co-worker drove into the office today with a newly purchased used loaded 97 Camry V6 with 80,000km on it. He paid $19,000cdn (Man I wish my car would be worth that at 4 years old).

He had test driven the Intrigue and liked it but I guess not enough as he preferred the quieter and smoother Camry ride (he even had $3000 in GM points). He could have gotten a new GL with leather/PCS for $24,000cdn or around $16,000usd after his rebate. You can lead a horse to water but....

How are those Aquatreads rated for winter performance? I've often thought I'd like to try out a pair of those Aquatreads - don't need to replace the original tires on my 00 Bonneville yet but probably will in a year.

    Ken
  • dindakdindak Member Posts: 6,632
Boy did he get hosed! $19K for a Camry with 80K and no warranty. Proves people will buy anything with a Toyota name on it no matter how much it is.
  • white6white6 Member Posts: 588
    You guys might check here:

    http://www.tirerack.com/tires/goodyear/gy_aq3.jsp#Survey

BTW, tirerack.com lists the 225-60/16 Aquatread III at $79 each. I can't vouch for the snow traction as we had no snow after mounting them up late last winter, but the survey shows them to be pretty good.

Test drove a 99 Intrigue GL last weekend. I was actually pretty impressed. I'm really bummed that they're going to quit making them.
One thing, though. At around 35 mph, there was a lot of noise, a sort of thrumming, that I assumed was tire noise (underinflation?). It was pretty loud and seemed to come from all over. Does this seem right? Thanks.
  • etharmonetharmon Member Posts: 399
The only reason that 97 Camry was worth that much is because fools like that guy will pay that much for it. "Hallowed be thy name of Toyota. God's gift to the motoring public." Anyway, some lucky used car salesman just made his week. I'm sorry, but Toyotas are not perfect. They break down and they have problems as well. I think their cars are highly overrated and overpriced. Not saying Intrigues(or any other car) are perfect, but the automotive world is round and there are alot more choices out there than Camry, Accord, and Taurus. Sadly though, the motoring public seems to become more and moew dumbed down each year.

I have used tire rack a lot and have always gotten good service from them.
Another company called discount tire has a much better wheel selection for the intrigue than tire rack does.

Good Luck in trying to nail the Service Mgr..Would love to know how GM gets charged back on lower control arms; twice on one car!!!

Sounds like your car helps him with his budget figures; ask him if he would like to fix the car under the original warranty..You have a leased car so he probably isn't concerned about making you happy..

Was talking with my regular dealer today and was told the story of a 01 Caddy Deville delivered to the dealer and then the dealer was told not to deliver because the engine had to be replaced. Since it was a ordered to replace one coming off lease; the dealer found another car for the client, however the original car is still sitting at the dealer, 4 months later. Gm has never bothered to pick the car up or replace the engine or reimburse the dealer for the car which can't be sold.. GM is a strange outfit anymore..

In surfing some of the other forums it is amazing the money spent to repair some of Asian cars where the owners are just delighted to own the car.

If any repairs are required on the domestic offerings; then it must be a quality problem and the maker is a total bum!!!! I find the domestic car is driven and abused more than the other guys..We just amuse that the Detroit car will withstand punishment without complaining; however, if it complains then it is bad.

On this forum there was discussion about a used V-6 Camary sold at a premium price. Just happy I wasn't the new owner; but on the other hand it was sold based on reputation and preceived value.. I suppose at 90k miles that it's a privilege to spend $1,000 to replace the timing belt and water pump..

Value is a 01 Intrigue GX with PCS, 60/40 rear
seat, sunroof, spoiler, and driver control pkg out the door including sales tax for $20k. New-no demo. Compare this to the Type S TL sedan at 33,710+tax and what would I miss by owning the Intrigue????

j_coleman ::: this hand-me-down is a new trend. In the past [with kids] she was always driving the [new] family vehicles ie. vans, mini-vans, etc. Also in past times we sometimes were both driving late models, which would entail double car-payments. She knows how well I take care of my cars, so after a few years she would more than happy to have my car virtually free.
