Price: $27,399 (about $200 under invoice) with OTD price of $28,606. There was no negotiation as the quotes from other dealers were not even close.
Listed below, the add-ons I know about. I astericked the ones I'm considering. Am I being an idiot? What's worth it (and if so, should I get installed at the dealer, and for how much?)
Exterior accessories
*Splash Guards (Forum member advised me to get this--And it's better to get it installed by pro)
Door Edge Guards
*Back-Up Sensors (should I get these, if not included in Navi? I'm in a city, and I've backed into a car in one tight parking spot. How much?)
*Leather protection? Is this offered? Is it worth it? Cheaper to do privately?
*Tinted windows? Are these not included?!
Wheel locks (Are these necessary? Do people steal these wheels?)
Cross Bars-(adds the 'criss cross' to the 2 lengthwise roof rails that come standard, right?)
Full Nose Mask
Door Visors
Moonroof Visor (I heard this is a waste?)
Fenderwell Trim
Fog Lights
Interior accessories
*Black All-Season Floor Mats (3 rows, $130.00 ebay)
*Cargo Mat ($70 ebay)
*Cargo Tray ($80 ebay)
*Cargo Board
*PlusOne™ Console (ebay, $240. Does this require special installation? Does it really come in handy?)
Table Leg Kit
Cargo Net ($45)
3rd Row Sunshade
Leather-Steering Wheel Cover
Auto Day/Night Mirror
*Lo jack security and car jacking with the kids inside!
How much? Is this worth it? Better to let someone else install?
Based on the lingering idea that if anyone ever kidnapped our kids in the car (though we wouldn't easily allow that scenario to take place), we'd be able to track them. Is that dumb? DOES THE NAVI SYSTEM HAVE A TRACKER?
Honda extended service contract/Warranty:
My husband wants a warranty-probably 8yrs/120,000--while I'd rather forget the contract and bank the money. We'll probably go with the contract or get dealer to match price.
Hondawarrantyinfo website
From:
5 years/60,000: ($0 deductible =$414.00)
to
8 years/120,00 miles: ($0 deductible = $1284.00)
What's your advice about any/all of the above? What can't we do without? Sorry to post here, but accessories forum isn't very active--this is where the action is, and anyhow, add-ons are a big part of getting the good deal, as well as managing the negotiation experience, I'm learning. Thanks!
Splash guards are inexpensive and worth buying with the car.
Back-up sensors do not come with Nav and are pricey. If you're seriously considering them, it might be worth your while to closely consider a Touring model. Tourings have front and rear sensors as well as a couple of things on your list - fog lights and automatic mirror, among other features.
Buy leather treatment products later and apply them yourself.
There is probably no need to tint the windows. If you live in the South, use the car for awhile to see if you need to add tinting.
Get the floor mats, cargo mat, and cargo tray. Evaluate your need for the cargo board and console. Remember that such items can always be purchased later.
I guess I don't understand the appeal of aftermarket alarm systems. My view is that merely locking the doors should offer about as much protection as anyone can get. Although the Nav is, obviously, GPS guided, Honda's does not (so far as I know) offer anything like the tracking ability of GM's On-Star system.
If you're going to keep the vehicle for an extended period, go with the longer EW. The shorter one doesn't really offer all that much (factory warranty is 5 years/60,000 on powertrain). According to my salesman (a straight shooting guy), the parts price alone for the dash NAV unit is $4800!
You need to get a new salesperson, and probably a different dealer.
You could try explaining the situation to the sales manager, but I suspect it won't help. Nail down the cost of the new vehicle before you talk trade-in value.
How to get your email id.I am also looking buy 2006 EXL in South Jersey area.
Thanks
Worked with Mike Pruitt Honda in Akron, OH
$29,378 plus tax (6.25%) and title (approx $30)
Great to work with. Straight shooters, no gimmicks.
Were patient while we decided which vehicle to trade in.
Very professional, not pushy. Very responsive.
Highly recommend for both price and professionalism.
I got a quote for $31,270 (including destination charge) for the EX-L DVD+NAV. I think I'll probably go there and check out the van tomorrow and see how much I'd get for my 2001 Accord trade in.
Another place can go to $31,250 but since I talked to the other guy first I'd like to see how much he can offer the trade in eventhough I bought the Accord from the second dealer.
I'm kinda bump that I found out the backup sensor (camera) is not included with the NAV and only on the Touring Model

I live in the S.F. bay area and just got my Midnight Blue EXL with Nav and Rez for $31'233. Was told this was 100 over invoice and the color I wanted with nav and rez is hard to get. This does not include Dest charges/ tax or any other fees. I ended up paying $38,700 but I got the full body kit, sub woofer, fog lights and the 7/year extended warranty. This color combo was very hard to get so I'm happy with the price but I'm gonna shop around for a better extended warranty ($1,500) sounds to much when you read these boards. Also I used a car broker that deals with my family alot and no one wanted to beat this price. One dealer matched it but their accessories were more expensive. Hope this helps.
Is this a typo? $38,700 OTD for an EX-L with Nav-res and a few extras and nobody could beat that price?? Did the broker tell you nobody would beat that price or did you hear it from the dealers themselves? Using the Edmunds TMV (which I find is overstated) and 8% sales tax brings it to $35,464. Even if you add in $500 for fees, you are still at $36,000. So you paid $2,700 for fog lights, a body kit, sub woofer, and 2 add'l year warranty. How much did the broker charge, or is that included in the price?
IMO, under $30k for an ody with some nice bells and whistles is a good deal, but for close to $40k I'd have a different list of vehicles.
Hope it's a typo as 38,700 OTD is high, maybe it's the Touring model?
The wife is having second thought on the NAV as we will probably use it a few times a year and I also have an Garmin GPS V handheld as well.
Anyone that bought the EX-L withtout NAV and regret not getting it? Or vice versa?
Thanks
So far, this was the best experience I have ever had purchasing an automobile. The dealer did not try to pull any tricks, there were no additional fees or hidden costs, and Hendrick also gave me $500 more dollars for my trade than both another Honda and Toyota dealer (Hendrick ended up giving me the full KBB trade-in value for my car).
Would definitely recommend these guys again. The dealership had a ton of traffic and I watched them sell three Odysseys during the two hours that I was there.
Dealership attitude is very important.
This is the third car I have bought by negotiating strictly over the Internet. It really is the way to go to avoid high-pressure sales tactics. I know so many people who get rushed into making a spot car buying decision on what they thought was a good deal only to find out they got taken to the proverbial cleaners...
They didn't have the wife's #1 choice, slate green with olive leather RES and NAV. Does this combo exist anywhere??? Well, their record showed they had one but it was traded with another dealer a couple of days before. They have the same combo but no NAV.
We settled for the Sage Brush with Ivory leather, our second choice. Since it's not our #1 and it has 31 miles on it, we talked the guy into throwing in the cargo tray and all-weather floor mat (the van comes with wheel locks in the glovebox).
Oh yeah, they took my 2001 Accord trade in for $8500 which is a little less than I hope but oh well.
Another local dealer has Sage Brush and Olive but we think the Ivory looks better with dark color so we didn't check it out.
We put almost 100 miles on it just from the afternoon driving around. The NAV is great and the map and directions are pretty right on. The rear camera is awesome. One thing I noted was that it's a wide angle view so things are closer then they appear on camera. Watchout.
I've read some complains about the stereo doesn't sound that great but I think it sounds excellent for OEM.
I wish it has a AUX jack for IPod thought.
Look forward to many years of happy ownership.
Any suggestions I will appreciate.
Thank you,
kansas
Maybe in the Odyssey its possible to put them together so I can put the carseat in the middle.
I currently have two infant seats in the second row and a toddler (forward facing) in the rear. Having the seats set up as a "bench" is great, because my toddler can scoot into the back row, no problem!
Does anyone have any advice for this kind of a scenario? I have a 2000 VW Passat wagon (glx) to trade, so I'd like to keep the whole deal together. The tax advantage of VA seems too good to pass up???
Thanks,
We have been talking about buying a minivan as a weekend car for some time so that our kids (7 and 2 year old) can enjoy the bigger space and watch their movies on the go. Also, we don't have to turn our regular cars into a big trash bin everytime we go out during the weekend. My wife email Internet departments of a few car dealers. The previous best(a week earlier) offer was $28,500. But last Friday, she got an offer from a Riverside dealer saying they would sell us the car we want (sage brush with olive interior) for $27564.51. The offer was great! I called the Internet sales person and made arrangement to pickup the car the next day. The car had only 6 miles on it. We went to the dealer last Saturday and my daughter brought her and her brothers favorite DVDs with her. We signed the paper and drove the car home. The kids were very happy and quiet in the car on the way home because they enjoyed their movies while I was driving. We like the van very much. Even my 2 year old son loves it and it becomes his new 'playroom' while parked in the garage. Overall it's a very pleasant experience and the Internet sales guy was very pleasant to work with.
By the way, I live in Souther California.
Can I ask you if you had a trade-in? Just curious if the dealer had low-balled the price of the van because he was making it up on the trade-in (some dealers do this)?
Congrats!
thanks
I don't even remember there was any extra charges from the dealer. If there was, it was a 20 or 40 documentation fee (I am not a detailed person about those little things). In the quote he listed wheel lock, splash guards, cross bar as additional items but did not charge for them. The sticker list is very long and I didn't check if those items are standard or extra. My thought was that EX-L RES is a standard model and is load with standard features as indicated on the factory sticker, and there is no need for me to verify. If, for worst case, the features list on the stick are not in the car, they got a legal problem. He said he threw in a cargo net for free.
Sounds too good to be true? Frankly speaking I was very supprised with the quote at first based on my understand of current market price of the car. But as I discribed, the deal was great! (at least for us)
Our neighbor just got a nice, low mileage 2002 Ody EX-L-RES for a great price because it was on the lot over 60 days and was green. The dealership told them it would have sold in a few days if it had not been the undesireable dark green color.
Paid $29,659 (includes dest.) + TTL and $399 dealer fees.
Ended up at $32,100 OTD. I had no trade in.
Does this sound like a good price?
Very pleasant experience at Bradenton Honda.
I just bought my Honda EX-L (no RES) on Saturday and am already looking at aftermarket DVD options (our child is only 9 months old, so we have some time). How do you like the RES so far?
BTW, how is the weather? I am originally from Lakeland (FL), but now live outside DC. Weather here is great. :shades:
Also, Indianapolis was hit with a hail storm several weeks ago and the other two dealers I was negotiating with (Penske and Ed Martin) had hail damaged vehicles on the lot. It was minor damage, but still noticeable and needed to be corrected.
I had the complete tow package installed (transmission and oil coolers, receiver, hitch) and added the cross bars for the luggage rack. Took delivery on 4/29. Here's what they offered:
Base 32,330
Tow Pkg. 1,040
X Bars 240
Total 33,610 (inc. dest.) + TTL
Doc. Fee 99
Floor Mats NC
Splash Guards NC
Add-ons were offered at closing and politely refused. I did opt for the 100k warranty at 1,095 after reading some discussions about the expense of replacing navigation components.
Seems like I might have been able to save some more money on the base vehicle going to the Chicago area, but there also seems to be quite a price variation in the tow package (one dealer offered it at 1341).
Now this comment has me thinking that 400 below is not that good of a deal. Should I wait until the end of the month? Any pointers would be highly appreciated.
$2200 under invoice on a Honda Odyssey (or any new Honda for that matter) is almost unheard of and is exception more than the rule. At that price the dealer is definitely losing money on the van. You could try, but I seriously doubt you will be able to get a new Odyssey for $2K+ under invoice without some sort of incentive from Honda Corporate.
IF it happened, it can only be attributed to one or more of the following:
A) The dealer misquoted on the internet inquiry (perhaps mistakenly offering an EX price) and stood by the number;
C) The vehicle was a demonstrator with some miles on it.
I can think of no other reasons why a Honda store would sell a new current MY vehicle at any true loss, much less the significant number claimed by that buyer.
If it did happen and neither B or C applied, that buyer got the second best deal I've ever seen claimed (the best being an "A" situation).
An EX-L RES is an EX-L RES and I don't know in any dealership you can find a non-factory EX-L RES, or they can legally claim it. The sticker WAS on the window, the car WAS real. It's good to have questions when dealing with car dealers, but I don't think we should question something to that extend. You should see the dealership. It's a very large operation.
For your assumption C). I already said in my previous message. The car had 6 miles on it when handed to me for test drive. The sales person told me the exact milage the day before. True, odometer could be altered, but why?! I think the legal problems it causes will be far more expensive than a few cars can make up. The dealership claim (you can also see in their showroom) they are the only dealership in California that has Honda President Award 8 times. The bottom line is that I have owned a lot of cars in my life and I know what a new car is.
Frankly speaking, I don't think the guy misquoted the price. Because he never mentioned he priced it wrong. Usually, they do claim more credit if they did some favor to you, such as someone mentioned in a message about the cargo net. The sales guy told me he 'threw' it in. I checked car options after reading the message, the message was right - the cargo net is a included feature. In this case, the sales guy played a sales 'trick' on me. But I don't think he would withhold the truth that he did me such a huge favor (misquote) by standing by his 'mistake'.
All this sounds like I am representing the dealer. But I am not. I read a lot of messages from this board and I just want to provide some information so everyone knows what he/she should expect to pay when buying this car. I can even provide the sales person's name if anybody is interested. Please provide your email address because sales person's name is not allowed here. I want everyone have a great deal. Personally, I think old fashioned car sales technics is way out dated. For a consumer, Internet sales should be the only way to buy a car. I bought my last car (BMW 530) the same way: Email to dealers, got an acceptable price, went in, signed contract, and left with the car within a couple of hours.
Good luck everyone.
My recommendation to people on this board is to do exactly what you and I did. Email, or call as many dealers as you can at the end of the month and look for the best deal. As cccompson eluded to (this has happened to me) sometimes dealers will quote you an absurd price just to get you in the door, and later claim it was a mistake (if you notice in these dealer quotes all of them have language to protect themselves from this).
But if people expect to pay $2k+ UNDER invoice on a brand new (non-demo) Odyssey (with no rebates), then they better be willing to wait a long time... Buying an Odyssey for any $$ amount under invoice is a good deal, and it was not long ago where folks were lucky to get an Odyssey for $1K OVER invoice....
In one of your posts you had been somewhat vague about exactly what equipment was listed on the window sticker - hence my suggestion of the possibility of a dealer modified model.
