    Herr Hamband,
Did you end up with the leather interior. Reason I was asking is I wondered if the leather seats were cold on the legs and bottom as lederhosen offer less thermal protection than pants. But I suppose if you did order the leather, then you have the seat heaters so it's a moot point.
p.s. seat heaters are located in the front of the map pockets in the driver's and passenger's doors. Rock the switch forward for high, back for low.

I am a bit puzzled by your post. If I understand correctly, you are alleging that a Honda Odyssey would dare to have a flat tire? I'm sorry but I find that very hard to swallow. Everyone knows that for a Honda Odyssey to show any sign of frailty is strictly verbotten.

Now my bosses 3.2 TL on the other hand....

At least it was only flat on the bottom.

Those are rare indeed. Are you sure it's not stolen? How much did you pay?
  • crkeehncrkeehn Member Posts: 513
They can't be all that rare, that is the second DVBP Odyssey that I have heard of. Now if it were beige, that would be rare.

will continue to track straight, even after a deflation/blowout. I suffered a catastrophic blowout on my Ford Windstar (it was my fault). The van continued to be very controllable and I was easily able to pull over to the shoulder (changing the tire wasn't so easy.)

Sorry I am so late answering your post. I removed the donut spare tire on my Odyssey. I store a inflate-a- tire aerosol can in there, now.. There is now enough room to store a few small snacks, and some wipes for the children. Very handy on long trips.
  • bjk2001bjk2001 Member Posts: 358
Remove temp spare and replace with a can of inflate-a-tire. You can't be serious, Can you?
You assume all the flat tires are just caused by a tiny nail. What if you had a flat can't be sealed with inflate-a-tie, like a cut on the sidewall or a blow out?

It's a reply to a joke post. Pat84 may be feeding the troll....

Then again, I've heard of 2 seater owners carrying a can of fix-a-flat and no spare.

I don't carry a can, I actually have it in all 4 tires. I opted for this practice ever since I was a kid. I used to be flat-prone. My bicycle was always getting flat tires. I ended up putting some of that puncture sealant in my bicycle tires and presto, no more flats. I just figured if it was good enough for my bicycle, it's good enough for my Odyssey.

I am wondering what grade of gas should we use in the 2003 Odyssey. I think Honda manual states that gas rating of 86 or higher is recommended. Any benefits of using a higher rating gas, spending more money if it is not going to make any difference.

We took our old Astro into the shop on Friday morning needed $500 to fix. We opted to get our new van a few months early. We lucked out, the dealership here had a Sagebrush Pearl with DVD that arrived that morning. The original buyers opted to wait another month. We went to look at it in the morning and my husband drove it home after work. We also got the 3.99% financing. We love it. The color is a gun metal greenish gray, that is the best way to describe it. It looks different every time we see it!

FWIW, I have 147,000 miles on my 99 EX. The transmission has started to shift hard and slip for the past 3,000-4,000 miles. The Check Engine Light came on recently and stays one. Mechanic says the error code indicates transmission slippage.

Now I'm trying to decide if I should repair it and keep driving it for a while (everything else works A-OK), if the cost of the repair will be recovered if I sell the van soon or if I should just get a new one and sell the 99 without repairing the tranny.

    Thoughts?
  • bjk2001bjk2001 Member Posts: 358
147k miles on it already? How much will cost to fix it? Have you gotten any quote yet?
  • auburn63auburn63 Member Posts: 1,162
If you want ot try and save it you could look into how much it would cost to replace the linear solenoids(also called AT clutch presure control solenoid) and do a good transmission flush procedure as well as maybe adding an external transmission filter. This sometimes but not always fixes the begining stages of the problem. Otherwise you are looking at 1k-3k worth of repairs depending. Good luck

I'm supposedly set to pick up my EX-L in Midnight Blue Pearl in early November. I say supposedly because apparently the new Blue color is released as often as Haley's comet. More to the point, what's this about special 3.9% financing that I've read? It's not listed on Honda's website anywhere. Any help is appreciated.
  • formy3kidsformy3kids Member Posts: 40
The dealer where we bought our van was offering the 3.9% financing only on Friday and Saturday of last week and only for the cars they had on the lot. We did not order it, someone else did and they opted to wait for the November shipment to come in, so this one came available. We have the Sagebrush EX-L-RES and I love it.

Is the linear solenoid replacement and transmission flush something that a Honda dealer would do, or could I (should I!!) get it done at Aamco?

My talks with the world's largest Honda store service rep has only resulted in his recommending a rebuilt tranny for ++$3,000++.
  • auburn63auburn63 Member Posts: 1,162
I think you would paobably be able to do it if you wanted to. The battery has to come out to gain access to the solenoid which is on the top side of the housing near the end. Remove the 4 10mm bolts holding it, take it out and flush the system. To flush: drain and refill with 3 quarts of atf, drive through all gear shifts and redrain. Repeat 4x for a total of 12 quarts..Or drive into a shop and say "what time can I pick it up".:) Good luck
  • alindaalinda Member Posts: 67
formy3kids is correct -- the 3.9% on all new 02s and 03s was for honda's customer appreciation weekend only. if you didn't take advantage of it october4, 5, or 6, you missed it.

I wasn't clear enough with my question. I was asking if a Honda dealer service department or Aamco would do the job - and, if so, which would you one use. I would not do it myself.

The Honda dealer service rep has *only* talked about a complete replacement with a rebuilt tranny ($3000.00++). He has not mentioned anything about solenoid replacement and flush.
  • jcrobertsjcroberts Member Posts: 54
Today I had my 99 LX ignition recall serviced. I was expecting new keys, but it was not needed.
I also had the transmission fluid drained 6 quarts and replaced. That left 10 more quarts unchanged for it needs to be pressure flushed. Was the replacement of just 37.5% replacement insignificant or worth $42? At 85K, I will have the pressure flush to buy some peace of mind with the transmission problems.
This was the nth time to have the sticking sliding doors addressed. My wife broke the handle on the other side trying to open it. I was thankful with 42K - out of warranty - they just caharged $30 for the broken handle.
Happy to have these proffessionally taken care of at a reasonable price.
  • auburn63auburn63 Member Posts: 1,162
The trans only holds about 6.5 quarts and on a drain and refill will only take about 3 quarts.A transmission flush is good to do and will flush through as much fluid as you need or want.

    mschafer
I would probabaly ask the dealer what they would charge you and if not to much differance then have them do it other wise you could have aamco do it.
  • mschafermschafer Member Posts: 317
Dealer wants about $450 +/= for the job. Solenoid is ~$220, Labor ~$50 and $180 for the power flush which includes 16 qts of ATF (so he says). Seems a bit high to me.

Just looked at www.collegehillshonda.com and found this driver's armrest with storage (2003 models only). It is good for long road trip. It cost $93.75 plus shipping. It is wider than the factory-installed armrest. Installation is easy. Don't know if this has leather or cloth finish. Will ask.
  • auburn63auburn63 Member Posts: 1,162
Honda ATF is usally somewhere around $5.00 a quart so thats 80 bucks in itself plus an hour or so for the flush. Good price for the solenoid job but ouch on the flushing. Ask them if they would consider giving you 10% off if you buy the job, only saves 45 bucks but would be better price for the job..Remember however you could spend the money and still have a problem as sometimes this works and sometimes not...Good luck
  • mschafermschafer Member Posts: 317
I think I may attempt the job myself. I can get Honda ATF for $3.00/qt and the part for about $160.00

My wife just called me to tell me that she whacked the side mirror while backing out of the garage. She said that the actual mirror fell out but the plastic cover stayed intact (I guess the breakaway part worked, but the actual mirror inside fell out and cracked). Does anyone know if the mirror can be bought at any parts store? Should I get OEM? Does it glue on? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Have your wife leave the car in the driveway.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Actually be glad the mirror folds - I have friends who did that with an older Caravan and it buckled the door to the tune of thousands.

My guess is that the mirror glues on, and you can get it replaced at the dealer or an auto glass place. Or d-i-y with glass from the same auto glass place, but by the time you get the mirror and adhesive, it may be faster and as cheap to let a pro do it.

Side mirrors are usually held on with an adhesive, a putty-like substance. I'd check with the dealer on the price and call a glass shop if it's too much $$. Save the cracked pieces to use as a template, or use the passenger side for this. You should be able to glue it on yourself. Use a good quality quick clamp with ample jaw heigth and padding to apply light clamping pressure while the adhesive is curing. I did this when my truck miror fell out and used epoxy to glue in the original glass.

You might want to install some kind of non-maring marker at mirror heigth to prevent this from happening again (like a curb feeler for the mirror). Mount it so it doesn't interfere with the garage door opening and closing. You may need to rig some kind of bracket for this and it might look a litle funny, but think of all the fun you'll have when someone asks you, "hey, whats that thing for?" You can say.....well, I'll leave that one up to you, but I know what I'd say!

The tranny has been slipping and crash bang down shifting for the last 2-3 months (6,000-10,000 miles) and the CEL has been on for about the same time.

Yesterday, the CEL went out (the bulb is OK, I checked it) and the tranny is now shifting almost like normal.

Figure that one out, I can't. I haven't done a darned thing to it. I wonder if I have a car repair gremlin living under the bridge over my creek.
  • auburn63auburn63 Member Posts: 1,162
Sounds as if something got cought up in that shift solenoid. I would probably try the fluid flush only at this point and see how that works out or atleast a drain and fill(3 quarts). Good luck
  • chartsterchartster Member Posts: 5
I got the same exact call from my wife today! Same thing happened, backed out of the garage and knocked the mirror part of the housing. Except my wife called from the dealership, where she was paying them $200 to replace that mirror part! :-(
  • hmthomashmthomas Member Posts: 2
Shucks sells a flexible mirror surface that you can cut to fit your mirror for under $5.00. You may want to try it.
  • jimblockjimblock Member Posts: 62
I cracked the passenger mirror two winters ago while scraping ice off it. (Another reason why I wish the US models had heated mirrors). I had my Honda dealer replace the mirror -- it was $15 for the part, and $36 (1/2 hour) for labor -- total with tax was about $50.

I prefered having the dealer do it, but you could order the glass and try to install it yourself...

For folks eager to use/keep fix a flat in the car: Many tire shops won't fix tires that have fix a flat in them. The stuff keeps their adhesive from sticking. Found that out the hard way when my truck had a flat on a rainy night after a long day and instead of crawling underneath, I broke out the handy emergency can and inflated the tire for the drive home. Had a large nail in it. Ended up plugging it myself, as both shops I took it to said "nope, won't fix it, due to the fix a flat". Plugging kit was recommended by the second tire guy.

I do use the stuff in my bikes and small tires like refridge dollys and lawn tractors, though.

Best use is for emergencies only for cars/trucks.

Just read in the Cleveland Plain Dealer that Honda has scaled back production of the Oddy's. Accords,Civics and the Pilots which are built in Canada because of a lack of production parts caused by our wonderful westcoast dock workers. They did mention that the southern plant that builds the Oddy's is at a stand still. Those that are awaiting 2003 may have a longer wait.
  • mschafermschafer Member Posts: 317
Even though the CEL is off, there is still both a stored and pending DTC on the OBDII. I just checked it and got the following info: DTC=P0740 - Torque Converter Clutch Circulation Malfunction. The Freeze Data Window has 73mph and 2382 RPM as the point where the pending DTC was noted.

The slip-slam-bang downshifting also seems to be back.

Do you think changing the linear solenoids and quad draining the ATF will take care of this? Parts to do this are on the way, and should be here in time to do it on the weekend.

    Thoughts?
  • raybearraybear Member Posts: 1,795
Hey, it was a lockout, not a strike. The owners locked out all the stevedores, not just those who were slowing down. Blame everyone.
  • auburn63auburn63 Member Posts: 1,162
There is the possibility that the flush may cure the bad shift points. however a code P0740 usally is either a bad o ring on the torque converter or a bad transmission.
  • mschafermschafer Member Posts: 317
I was afraid that it might be something more serious/expensive. I'll try the linear solenoids and the flush first. It can't hurt. Thanks for the feedback.

Right now I have a deal set up on a 2003 Ody EX-L. I'm trying to decide if I'll recover the cost of fixing the tranny in the sale of the old one or not. Probably not. I'm real tempted to just sell it "as is", and disclose the buyer that the tranny needs work.
