Room: The Odyssey wins and has more room
Quietness: They are about the same
Easy of getting in and out: The Dodge sits high off the ground and you have to pull yourself into it and when you get out, you actually fall out to the ground, so the Odyssey wins on this score
Gas Mileage: I think I am getting about 10 miles to the gallon in town with the Dodge so the Odyssey wins.
Safety: I thought the Dodge would be safer, as it is so big, but I saw in the newspaper today and TV yesterday that they just rated the Dodge Ram safety at the very bottom. It is a very unsafe vehicle.
Taking my mother to the doctor: Well I have to do that and I don't think she is going to be able to get into the Dodge, up that high. I will need to find a stepping stool.
Power and Acceleration: the Dodge wins.
Seeing in back of me: The Dodge wins. With its huge mirrors, it is the first vehicle I have driven that has no blind spots in back.
Ride: The Dodge is the worst vehicle I have ever riden in. Even in town it bounces you around.
Fit in garage: Well my garage happens to be longer then most garages or I don't think the Dodge would fit.
Why did I make the trade? Well my Odyssey is in the body shop for up to two weeks and that is the only vehicle the auto rental agency had. I just called them and that is still all they have.
BTW, the dealer service for 30K or for any other mileage interval is a complete ripoff. For example, the dealer charges around $285 for the 30K service. All they really do is change the transmission oil, coolant, air filter, fuel filter and oil change. That is only about $60 worth of stuff. I know for a fact that replacing the tranny and coolant fluid was not that difficult. It's questionable whether the the fuel and air filter really need to be changed at this interval.
Every time I have looked at the air filter at 30,000 miles, it was very dirty on my cars and I always drove on paved roads. The fuel filter only needs to be changed if you had fuel with impurities in it, but how would you know?
Yes $285 does seem like a lot. It would be interesting to see what others are paying for their various services. I know a non Honda dealer which works on Honda cars and if the Honda dealer quotes me that price on the 30K, I may look elsewhere.
However, I just am going to get my 7500 mile service, while its at the dealer, for a few weeks anyway, severe conditions. That would normally be $55 but they give me free oil changes so it will be $35. They check the brakes and rotate the tires. Seems like a fair price. I would not want to do it myself for that price or $55 either.
I notice the dealers around here often post their prices compared to the discount places and on standard services try to match them. They get their profit on the nonstandard stuff. Use to cost me $300 to replace the Mass Air sensor on my car about every 50K miles.
gearing would be a killer.

I have a warranty question. My dad bought me the super-duper extended warranty (the 7 year one I think it was, maybe 10?). This is on a 2000 model.
I was wondering where I can find terms online. I want to make sure I know what I can do with the van. Or, I will tell you what I've done and what I plan on doing, and if you know whether or not it violates warranty, please let me know.
What I've done already:
1) replaced head unit
2) removed folding tray, replaced with custom sub box
3) installed amp
4) whatever wiring is involved with 1-3 (I didn't do it, profesionals did)
Am I safe with that? I'm concerned about the wiring issues, which is also what I'm concerned with on the next:
What I want to do:
1) neon lights. under the dash and pass/drive seats. This involves connecting to the battery, possibly drilling small holes in the plastic on the underside of the dash (away from dangerous areas, though).
If I've already violated the warranty, well, that sure does suck because it cost a hell of alot, but I guess I'll go ahead with my plans. If what I plan will violate it, then that sucks and I guess I'll sell it all. If neither do, then hooray for me!
Thanks for any advice you can give me.
This van kicks serious ***
And richcolo, I feel your pain. My wife has managed to take out that right mirror not once but twice. Fortunately, as you say, they are not all that expensive, and easy to install yourself.
Best wishes,
David
I'd have to widen my garage as well as it is only about 90". Not sure it's worth the cost though (sounds expensive).
I'm a new reader of this forum.
When I went back to the beginning of the current topic, there were a lot of posts about the extended warranty. Someone mentioned that the fair price was around $895. Does anyone know where and who is selling at this price?
Thanks in advance
David
A friend of my had his Ody Navi w/ leather, entertainment system for about a week, and he loves the Navigation system.
Thanks
I haven't really looked at the latest system but they did not offer a touchscreen on their own model last year.
Neither Alpine nor Navtech <http://www.navtech.com/> sell directly the same models that they make for Honda.
2000 Odyssey EX to Honda service center I used
to go for. After two visits, I was told the
click is treated normal as mention in a Honda
Tech Notice. The situation described in the
notice is very similar to what I can sense.
I list some info here:
"On any Honda vehicle, clearance between the
brake caliper brackets and the ends of the
brake pad backing plates can cause the pads
to hit the caliper brackets when you first
apply the brakes in a new direction of travel
(for example: bcaking up, applying the brakes,
then driving forward and applying the brakes).
The clicking you hear is a NORMAL characteristic
of the brake system; the clearance is there to
allow for heat expansion and/or corrosition of
the pads."
To me, I do not feel this is a good explanation.
I do not hear those clicks, actually sounds
like "ping," on my other vehicles. And it was
not there before.
I feel the click is very annoying. It makes me
feel that it may be a symptom of a serious
problem.
My confidence towards to the Odyssey is dropped
again.
Besides, my 4 years old told me that his
classmate's father has a big tire SUV that
can crash Daddy's van. Peer pressure, Hum!
Thanks.

Also - thanks for the earlier links to the honda parts sellers. I'm looking to see if "hondapartsforyou.com" will match some others on some of the parts. They have free shipping but the prices are higher so it evens out...
I had a Honda OEM air deflector. It DID NOT prevent bugs or stones from hitting my windshield or hood. It is way too low to function properly. Beside, It was a pain in you know what when washing and waxing the van. After two months of using it, I decided to take it off my van once for all. Don't waste your money on such a useless piece of junk!
Happy driving
I havent shopped for a tailgate light, but I get the feeling you arent' going to be able to find something for much cheaper than the dealer...but keep us posted.
Thanks for the heads up on the air deflector. I guess I'll have to go with a nose mask or wash the bugs off often.
Anyone have any comments on the nose mask? I thought it couldn't be left on wet and it is wet a lot in Florida.
Scotchcal Invisible Mask (dshmel) Tue 15 Aug '00 (07:39 PM)
The material comes in bulk rolls of either 12" or
24" width and is cut to order by the foot. It is
applied using two homemade solutions sprayed from
pump bottles. The first solution is water with a
small amount of baby shampoo mixed in. This "slip
solution" is sprayed on the van before applying the
film and allows the film to slide around until you
get it in the correct position. You then "anchor"
the center of the film down with a firm swipe of
the squeegee. Next you lift up the film on either
side and spray the second solution (a 50/50 mix of
water and 70% isopropyl alcohol) on the back of
film and the car surface - effectively rinsing away
the soap solution and "activating" the adhesive.
You continue QUICKLY with the squeegee process at
this point as the film sticks readily and air or
solution bubbles can form. One "tip" that I
discovered was the need to use more than the
recommended 3 drops of shampoo for the slip
solution - I used about 2 teaspoons in 16 ounces of
water - which worked much better.
As far as mschafer's comment about the plastic
being harder than paint - I disagree. We have
1,600 miles on our Oddy (Mostly highway since the
van was driven 780 miles from the dealer in IL and
had another 180 highway miles on it upon delivery)
and there were about 6 VERY small pocks in the
plastic lens' (one was the size of a pin head).
There are NO nicks or pocks in the paint on either
the hood or bumper. Remember also, you can use
touch-up paint on the hood or bumper - but pocks in
the plastic are more difficult to fix.
The advantage of the film over the mask or the
deflector is that it can protect the lights, fronts
of the side view mirrors, even behind the wheels.
And NO - I don't work for 3M, or Xpel, or Reflex
Enterprises. I used a product that I was initially
skeptical of and the stuff really works. You
should be "handy" with detail work as the
installation is tricky - but if you pull it off -
your Oddy is protected from MOST pitting without
any noticeable alteration in appearance
Thats all I had on it...masshoosier
Off topic - anyone know how to change the password? Or am I stuck with a number I can never remember since I like to keep my cookie filter
Personally, I feel that the hood deflector is better for protecting the leading edge of the hood against paint chips rather than bugs from hitting the windshield. That's why I've always liked the term "hood deflector" better than "bug deflector". One thing to consider also is that it is dependent on the speed that you're driving. The faster you go, the more air there is to redirect over the windshield, so that instead of splattering on your windshield, the bugs may be deflected over and up roofwards. I've also found that I've had to use the wipers less especially when its snowing since my deflector (albeit not on an Odyssey) seems to reroute most of the snow away from the windshield. In fact, the only reason why I had to use my wipers intermittently was to clear the spray from the car in front of me.
Traditional car bras are not as good since they cover the paint completely and this means that the front end's paint will fade differently from the rest of the vehicle. Over time this will be noticable. Also, debris can get underneath the bra and cause micro scratches. Waxing underneath is not a good idea, I've heard, because it makes the surface even more slippery and allows the bra to slide around more causing even more surface abrasion.

1. Did the transmission clunk start off as a quieter clunk and then get louder. (Mine is somewhat quiet now.) I can hear the clunk when I put the car in reverse, and drive about 15' backwards. It then clunks again when I put it in forward and drive another 15' forward. Is this normal or indicative of a problem?
2. When you had the problem fixed, did they repair the transmission or replace it? How long did this take? Most important, how long is the fix warranted for? (I have 24k miles on the van, and don't think I'll be happy with a 1yr/12k mi. warranty on such an expensive component of the car.)
3. The biggest problem with my sliding doors is that the power lock button doesn't always unlock the doors. Has the dealer been able to fix this for you?
4. In addition, the remote doesn't always lock the doors. I suspect this is because one of the sliding doors is not closed all the way. (I think I am correct that the remote will not lock the doors if one door is open.) This could be related to problem #3, but maybe not. Has anyone experienced this?
1. Does the LX have manual height adjustment for the driver's seat?
2. Any major complaints or regrets for getting a LX vs. an EX?
3. Anyone add the wood grain trim kit to the dash, particularly the grey interior, since we plan to order a silver '02 in august. (also got a quote for $1400 for leather seats and door inserts from local shop)
Didn't want power sliding doors and the only features we'd miss on the EX are alarm/keyless entry which we'd install afterwards. Would consider the EXL for '02 but I don't think the power doors are too great, but if the price difference isn't too much we may jump for that, since we'd like to add a 6 disc changer, alarm/keyless entry, wood trim and leather to the LX. I wonder how much the EXL msrp will be?
thanks for your help.
number soon. What does TSB stand for?
I guess the click sound should happen to many
Odys if owners pay attention.
I am also wondering the reason for the fix on
your Ody. The reason that the click sound
disappears may be because of the new brake pads
put on your Ody. I did not hear the click
when it was new. Now the brake pads on my Ody
are only half thick as the new pads. I think
this may be the reason it gone for now. If
I am right, the click sound will come back
after the pad worn out. Hope I am not right.
Hope technician did fix your Ody.
TSB stands for technical service bulletin. I'm not close to any kind of expert but I think it applies to minor defects that a car company finds that its products show on a random basis. The defects aren't life threatening or widespread enough to issue a recall but get enough volume so that they issue A TSB to garages and dealerships. If a car comes in that exhibits problems spelled out in the TSB then the mechanics have a quick reference to help solve the problem. Also, problems that require a fix under the TSB are automatically covered by the warranty if your still in the warranty period. Each TSB has its own unique number so that it can be retrieved from the garages computer if that garage subscribes to the TSB service(which all dealerships do I presume).
Well, thats a layman's definition. I'm sure more mechanically savvy owners could do a little better but thats just how I view the whole thing at this stage of my knowledge.
My sound wasn't a "click" it was more like a "pop". A metallic one at that. It was pointed out to me when I brought it in that older pads do make "clicking" noises when they adjust themselves during driving but when they heard this noise they knew it was not a "normal characteristic". Thats when they told me about the TSB on pads for 2000 models.
Good luck, keep us posted on your findings.
1. Yes.
LX has manual height adjustment for the driver's seat (2001 owner's manual pp 107)
2. No.
IMHO, LX + $2000 in my Roth IRA account sounds better.
3. No.
Good luck!
lots O love
two dealership own by Crown Honda.?? Based on martin318 info Alton Blakley
Honda located Somerset KY is looking good .
Program ( MVCP ) Also can any one give me info on Anderson Honda located in Baltimore and Crown Honda in Greensboro NC and Chapel Hill NC....
I've been reading these boards for several weeks. I just picked up my SS EX on 6/11. I owe many of you an apology. I thought you were being overly critical about the stereo system. I mean how bad can the system in a $30K vehicle be?
Pretty bad is the answer.
I went to adjust the bass and found out that the system has no bass.
So, has any one discovered an answer yet? Do I need to change the speakers or the receiver or both? What are the costs involved?

Did you read the review on edumnds homepage of 2001 minivans? Honda wins.
1. Does the LX have manual height adjustment for the driver's seat?
The 2001 does. I have a 2000
2. Any major complaints or regrets for getting a LX vs. an EX?
None. Didn't need/don't miss the power doors-one less thing to go wrong. No kids, just dogs and they usually go in through the hatch. Had vibration at 75mph- service mgr tried new tires-ended up giving me alloy wheels and michelins-definite improvement-I'd drive an Lx and an Ex just for that reason- see if you can tell the difference. Either negotiate for alloy/tires or do it later with the money you save buying the lx. Didn't want to pay so much $$ for what I didn't need. I also added keyless remote from dealer and 6cd changer after market. Got the floormats online and the cargo mat. I keep the third seat down most of the time.
3. Anyone add the wood grain trim kit to the dash, particularly the grey interior, since we plan to order a silver '02 in august. (also got a quote for $1400 for leather seats and door inserts from local shop)
No, but I've read others have, it looks good, not too hard, just be patient and get it right the first time.
The leather price sounds a little high from what I've read but not much.
I installed a wood grain dash kit and it looks like it was factory installed. I paid $400
for it from exotic wood dash!
What about the new US plant, when is it supposed to be online? Any chance it will improve early availability of '02s making for more of a buyer's market?
