The car drives nicely but it rattles in the sliding door area on both sides. Some rattle is due to weather, but some is not. It is quite annonying and please let me know if any one has experience with it
Uh, OK, except for those two owners, why aren't the others here complaining about getting 13.5 mpg?
I mean, if it is a problem with the cars, there should be multitudes of reports...
It sounds like not everyone is in your boat. Hopefully it'll improve with miles.
Nobody wants to hear this but DRIVING HABITS and CONDITIONS have a major effect on gas mileage.
There are many posts in this forum and others concerning the same or similar problem. You can email me if you want more info.
On another topic, our airbag light went on. Diagnosed as "no signal from right side impact sensor," so that sensor will be replaced.
Good luck to all "rattlers," and please continue to post your experiences, especially when van is serviced.
fat chance you'll do that - far too easy to be a honda propagandist. I guess you and your buddy stevedebi figure if you blame the drivers often enough, there really cannot be a problem with the 2005 odysseys. wake up and visit the other honda forums - there are SCORES of drivers reporting miserable mileage.
As a Honda salesperson you should be outraged at Hondas abysmal approach to customer service.
Where are Odys built? Alabama like Pilot?
The best thing to do is just bypass those that irritate you. No one is going to find a solution to the issue by making it personal.
That said, I'm not sure whether this kind of service actually exists and whether air bags etc. could cause a problem. What about the people who do aftermarket leather -- might start by checking with them about modifying the seat?

I haven't taken a long trip since Chrismas time (1 week after we bought it), but will be travelling for Easter. It will be my first real chance to test highway MPG under normal conditions, and seat comfort on an extended drive.

Assuming you are a prudent driver something may, in fact be amiss. Usually when something is wrong performance will suffer too and your check engine light will come on.

There are quite a few 05 Ody owners complaining about the gas mileage (odyclub.com). There are some that get very technical and some that are clearly obsessed and have no life. I have the i-vtec and haven't seen any bonus or boost in mileage, but it's not crazy-bad. It is a big vehicle and we have some hills around here and quite frankly I don't want to pamper the thing all the time for the benefit of saving .05
So let me say....I love my gas hog!
For those who have seat comfort issues, suggest getting high quality (thick) sheepskin full covers. We did same on relatively uncomfortable seats in a Barretta some years ago. Difference was night and day.
Our only problems have been: light on clock went out, and; express window up/down stopped working (window still went up/down, just not express feature). Both fixed under warranty.
In my discussions with other Odyssey owners at work, etc., that seems the norm. Only one other mentioned "hard" seats. Everyone I've ever spoken with is extremely satisfied with the Odessey. I am not a Honda employee, just a water treatment engineer.
Back to my earlier question about why people complain (the van or the person?). Above is the kind of reasonable post that makes one believe that if this person became irritated at Honda, there would be a good reason. It contrasts with the posts I see here where a person has a problem (often one that is perception -- seat comfort -- or difficult to diagnose -- mileage) and right away we get the "I am so angry - never again Honda!" stuff. That kind of post makes me believe the person is likely more at fault than the van. You could interchange any make/model car and if the same thing happened, we would read, "never again [brand]!" It's a subtle point, but do others here read these posts the same way? If so, that might help explain why many times questions are raised about the complaint. It isn't that people are Honda apologists. It's just that we are reacting to what little "evidence" we have here.
"My question for the people with the Corollas. Why aren't you putting up a stink with a car getting 21 MPG let alone 12 MPG when your supposed to get a minimum of 32.
I just wish you would sue or call the media and make this a public issue. Because unlike what others say.
Toyota cares about their rep. Look at the sludge issue they now have a long warranty on the engines.
The media is probally your best bet.
By the way I read somewhere that bad MPG usually means a bad o2 sensor, pvc valve,or the timing could be off. 12-20 MPG is inexcusable and if anyone tells you differently they have no idea what they are talking about."

Glad to hear that my solution worked for you as well! (when in doubt, get a bigger hammer....)

Maybe Craig, but not necessarily so. I believe that OBDII systems will log 'pending codes' for a certain number of drive cycles. These indicate subsystems that are operating out of spec, but not far enough so to trigger the MIL (CEL). Translation: there could be real problems that are promoting poor gas mileage, the computer might have that data, but it might not meet the severity required to trigger the dash light.
You need to ask someone to hook up a scanner and read out the engine computer. As this is done as part of some of the state emission tests, it really would be a good place to start. Then you get a full reading of what is coming out of the tailpipe, plus a reading of what the engine computer is recording from it's own diagnostics. Armed with this (assuming is shows a fault), you are then equipped to do battle with Honda.

did the dealer say how they fixed the door rattle? If so, please let me know via post or email: olach@netzero.com thanks
Too frequently, from what I've been reading at several forums, the fuse for the DVD is not put in at the factory--
and is missed too often in PDI.
I also own an Odyssey with a 5spd trans. What I have found at other sites is that there is an extended warranty to 100,000 miles on only 1999-2001 models. NO extended on 2002-04. There seem to be many owners who get reduced price or free transmission repairs on later models as they fail. This is a secret warranty which may be illegal. Also, the oil jet transmission recall tries to fix the 2nd gear overheat problem which is not yet very common. But it does not fix more common failures.
About more common failures.
Since dealers often fix a failed trans by replacing the whole unit, there are not many independent observations about what goes on inside a failed Odyssey transmission. Some believe that soft slow smooth shifts allow the clutches to slip for a long time. This will cause alot of clutch dust to wear off and clog the where trans fluid should flow. There is no filter that can normally be changed so clutch dust builds up and clogs the works and makes the trans slip or not shift. This way of failing is documented for the Acura TL and CL and is posted in copied Honda documents on NHTSA's site on car recalls.
Changing trans fluid may help some. I do not know if installing a trans cooler will make much difference. And it could even be installed wrong and cause more problems.
