To follow up on #4445 -- The bad news is the transmission has to be replaced on my 2003 Odyssey -- about $5k, the good news, Honda is paying for parts and labor. I was 18k miles out of warranty at 53k miles, had the recall work done at 42k miles and Honda is standing behind their transmission Thanks Honda!

we bought our 05 Odyssey (EX-L,DVD-RES) at Christmas and, given the gradually increasing outdoor temperatures, have only recently been driving with the window's down.

this has brought about a problem i have never heard of, nor could ever imagine, and one that is downright scary.

as you know, the sliding doors on the van now have windows that come down (not all of the way, but maybe half?).

i'm still not sure which conditions create the following problem, but when those middle windows are down it is creating excruciating pressure on our ears. that includes all passengers. it is frightening---like something out of a movie. the kids were real shook up when we first discovered it......grasping their heads and ears and screaming for the pain to 'go away'.

i thought our eardrums were going to burst.

it also created a creepy, audible repetitive pattern of air circulating (trying to circulate?).

i can't recall if the front windows are up, down, or half-way down in this scenario.

i want to do some more 're-creating' of this situation so i can relay the EXACT conditions that create this effect, and then discuss with Honda's corporate team.

but i already know this: i didn't spend $30K on a new vehicle that can't travel with the windows down. gotta take action.

    two questions:
    1. has anybody had this happen?
    2. any advice as to how i should proceed with Honda?

I have an 05 Odyssey EX-L and am having problems with the "Rear" button on the A/C unit in the dash; push it, the light doesn't come on, no control of rear AC either at driver or rear control. Anyone else have this problem??
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 52,834
No problems with the rear setting. I don't pay much attention to it, so can't really say if there are certain conditions that would prevent it from being active.

The air buffeting effect (sometimes called "helicoptoring", but I think there is another name for it) is common in a lot of cars, due to the pressure differential. Sort of like blowing air across the top of a bottle.

This actually happens quite often if you have a moonroof open, and the rest of the car sealed up.

usually, the solution is to equalize the pressure by opening another window, even if only a crack. With the EX-L, the first thing I would try is to tilt up the back edge of the moonroof, or you can open a front window too. Either one should equalize the pressure.

You will get a bit of buffeting in the slding door windows, just because of the size of the openings. Good way to collect all the loose trash in the far back (if it doesn't blow out of the window). Can't really say how this will be at highway speeds, since it hasn't been warm enough to drive with them down since we bought the van.

Actually, the best way in a van to balance the air pressure is to crack the rear vent pop-out windows, especially when you just have the moonroof open. Dumb idea by Honda to eliminate this feature.

One of the recent reviews that I read (I don't know which one off-hand) mentioned this "air hammering/buffeting" problem. I have the same problem in my Honda CRV if I open the rear windows. Apart from opening other windows / the moonroof (if applicable), I'm not sure if there is any fix. I agree that this can be more than annoying when it's happening...

What is the cheapest and easiest way to add XM Satellite Radio and an auto-dimming mirrow (preferably with compass) to a 2004 Odyssey EX?

I would prefer an XM unit that is meant to work with the existing head unit. I'm leasing the vehicle and don't want to make any permanent modifications to it.

    Thanks!

I too just purchased a new 2005 Odyssey Touring with the driver's side door not closing properly. I had it included as one of the issues I wanted fixed prior to taking delivery of the vehicle. When I picked up the car last nite, the same problem existed. I was told it was adjusted by the service dept. and that is all they can do. I even had the service manager tell me about the pressure, the heaviness of the door, the weatherseals, etc but I don't buy it. He said he had just come over from Acura and that MDX's have the same problem. Not sure what that means?.
There has to be something going on here, I mean come on it's a HONDA!.

    two tests I'd conduct:

#1). roll one window down slightly and try closing the driver's door. easier?

i've heard VW bugs (remember, "it floats"), were so well sealed that you had to lower a window to close them. back in the late 60's, i seem to recall this was true on the bug my family owned.

maybe the cabin ventilation system to the outside doesn't pass enough volume quickly enough.

#2). try closing the door much more slowly.

This is as NORMAL as normal can be. Every single car I've ever had would do this. It's just normal aerodynamics.
  • chuckzchuckz Member Posts: 3
From what you said, it sounds like the alarm would sound only after thief has broken into the car? Why does Honda make such decision? I thought the alarm is for deterrent.
  • dulnevdulnev Member Posts: 652
Auto-dimming after-market mirrors can be purchased for about $100-200. I have one with built-in compass and outside temperature installed in our MPV for $250 (including labor). Note that you will most likely have an ugly wire going from the back of your mirror to somewhere under headliner.

If you get a choice between one with and without outside temperature, I recommend you skip the temperature feature since it's highly unreliable.

is the headunit labelled as "XM ready"? If not, you won't be able to hook up XM through it. If it is, you can add the components (tuner and antenna), and remove them later.

The cheapest way is to get a portable unit, and play it through the FM modulation. That can be picked up form not much over $100, and used in any car.

i appreciate all the feedback thus far since posting my problem. i've been doing some research and many are calling this situation an "air resonance" issue.

i realize that having a middle window down (or partly down) is likely to cause some type of air flow issue, but, i assure you, this hardly seems quite as normal as some suggest.

our effect is pretty intense. the "helicoptering" sound is there and the pressure on what feels like the inner ear is very uncomfortable, especially on young children.

remember when (before things were new & improved), you could drive around in your vehicle with the windows down? now, it seems as though you need an instruction book telling you which windows to open, by how much, and how fast to drive or not drive, in order to avoid this disturbing sensation.

by the way, we traded in a '97 Grand Caravan for our '05 Odyssey purchase and that minivan did NOT produce this situation at all. that model did have rear windows that tilted open, operated by controls on the driver's door.

the only conclusion i've reached thus far: Honda likely made a mistake on its '05 Odyssey design by not having the rear side windows tilt open.

Trust me, I know exactly the effect you're describing and the answer is still "it's absolutely normal". Try driving at highway speeds with rear windows opened in any 4-door sedan and you will experience the exact same effect. It's very loud and very scary but it's absolutely the way nature intented!

I bought the new Odyssey EX-L RES in February 2005, after driving it about 700 miles within its first month of ownership I noticed a oil leak on the garage floor. Took it to dealership, they said it is transmission oil and the line between radiator and transmission is leaking, they fixed it but the next day I noticed the oil leak again. Took it back to the dealership and they kept the Odyssey and gave me a rental van. Next day they told me that the torque convertor seal is broken and they are waiting for some parts from Honda to fix it. It has been more than a week and the latest update is that the transmission casing is cracked and need to replace the whole transmission and waiting for the new transmission to arrive.

I am really worried and upset and was not expecting such a poor quality workman ship from Honda. I have insisted my dealership to replace the van but they won't do it saying that Honda would fix it under warranty.

Any one else had similar issues with 05 Odyssey, What should I do next?
  • taylor7taylor7 Member Posts: 4
I can not believe that happened. I would have blown a gasket. My doors always malfunction with my kids in the car because that is when I use them them most, trying to get them closed. It is like they just shut down. It is in the shop now with a video recording of the last two incidents. I am not sure what they are going to be able to do as they have already replaced everything in both doors. What other problems do you have with your doors banana1?
  • sportymonksportymonk Member Posts: 258
I have a 2001 Impala and it does the same thing. If the rear windows are open it sounds and feels like a helicopter is overhead and the there is a chop-chop-chop buffeting effect. One other side effect I haven't seen mentioned, a mini-tornado will pickup any paper in my car and eventually blow it out the passenger front window. Have learned to secure everything in the car if I open a window (Isn't this sad?)

Seems to be common on cars built in the last few years. Maybe the lack of rain gutters? (Doubt it really). Suspect it is a result of the aerodynamic flow as car makers struggle to get the best miles per gallon.
  • ti48ti48 Member Posts: 14
You are not alone. I have the same problem. Oil leaks at about 1000 miles. They told me that the transmission oil leaks from the torque convertor seal

What are they doing with your van now. Is it fixed. My van is in the repair shop for the last 8 days and now they are putting a new transmission it. I can feel your agony.

Only 22 days left, and they have to take the van back as a lemon (at least here in CA, that is the law)...

It is NOT limited to "cars built in the last few years"! This is normal aerodynamics that any car without a hole in the back window would exhibit.
  • badgerfanbadgerfan Member Posts: 1,565
A hole in the back window, or the third row power swing out vent windows like the Chrysler/Dodge vans have. Maybe those roll down second row windows are not much of a good feature!

Frankly, I hardly ever open any windows ever. Who wants to be buffeted by high winds and hear all that outside and wind noise when you can ride quietly and comfortably in a heated in the winter and air conditioned in the summer vehicle?

The a/c or cabin air filter needs to be changed. The Honda dealer serviced it previously. I now wish to replace it myself. The housing is behind the glove box. I've dropped the glove box down to expose the filter housing. The filter inserts vertically. However accessing the opening for the filter is perplexing. The glove box is hinged onto the lower (molded composite) dash which is immediately in front of a horizontal, continuous metal crossbar. Those two items are the barriers preventing access to the filter. Question: How do you access the filter? It seems the two barriers have to be removed or somehow swung out of the way. Anybody? Thanks!

Looking for input solutions on fixing the annoying rattle when window shades are down. Rattles are consistent when driving over rough roads, bumps, etc... Very irritating in an otherwise quiet cabin. Haven't gone to dealer with this problem yet. But would love to have input from other owners and their experience. Thanks to all!

That is correct. Most factory alarm systems work like that. There are aftermarket alarms that can do more but remember - it's not like any actually pays attention to car alarms anyway.

how fast were you driving when this happens?

I had an authorized station install a passenger-side airbag override switch. They told me to only use the switch while the engine was off. My 6 year old flipped it while the engine was on, and now I can't shut off the SRS light.

I heard the procedure was simple. Anyone know how to do this?
  • ti48ti48 Member Posts: 14
They should give you a new van
  • khaskhas Member Posts: 3
Did your dealer replaced your van. My dealership is not willing to replace it yet.

pull s seat from a volvo S70 and your problems should be solved...just kidding, i make this point only because i'm not all that impressed with either the seating or ergonomics of our '04 ody and am happy to say that my wife is the primary diver of that vehicle while i continue to enjoy our "older", yet in my opinion my opinion, much more comfortable, '99 S70..

YES! Mine, too! I feel it in the pedal and that is EXACTLY what it sounds like. Grinding over a curb.

I recently purchased a 02 ody. After three days the transmission was slipping in the second gear. The place where I brought the vehicle replaced the linear selonoid. Now the van is working ok. Have anyone had a situation like this before? Did it work? how long? or do I need a new transmission?

Please see our other postings regarding the door rattle! (type in door rattle in the search box). Our dealer has had the engineers out, fixed and replaced everything except the door itself, and has determined they cannot fix it. When we got it back the last time, not only did it continue to rattle off and on, but it had developed the most irritating rattle in the dash as well! (Around the glove box area).
We purchased one of the very first off the line - took it right off the truck. We have determined we will never do that again no matter how much we like the vehicle. We are entering into arbitration with Honda now, since we are leasing and technically they own this van. Our dealer here has backed us every step of the way - their service department has gone out of their way to work this through, and has told us if Honda won't take the van back, they will and will provide us with a brand new one.
PS - they have rented us a new Pilot - and that car rattles even more than the van! Every door on that rattles!

I also just had my 2003 Odyssey transmission replaced by Honda at 21K miles. I was happy for about 1 day until the symptoms started right back (noticeable vibration between 50 and 55 is the most irritating). Because I am stationed in Guam and I will be leaving in the next few weeks, I have decided to pursue getting my Odyssey fixed on the mainland when I get there because I have not been real happy on the service/treatment I have received here as a "non-island" resident.

I have one important question for the others who have had Odyssey transmission problems. Did your transmission completely fail on you or are you all just plagued by vibrations and shuttering of a slipping transmission/torque converter?

My vehicle is being shipped to L.A. and I driving across the country and am wondering if I am asking for a transmission failure in Death Valley.

You are brilliant. I closed my 3rd seat today with the strap inside and could not get it open to save my soul. I thought because the strap was inside that I would have to bring it to a dealer. Your suggestion to close it completely worked like a charm, I heard the click and was able to lift it out easily. I have aftermarket leather, too, like you said. Thanks for helping me get my stuck magic seat unstuck!

My '00 EX is on its second "remanufactured" transmisssion. This latest trans is "lugging" in 4th gear (final gear) at 55 mph. When I press the gas pedal it jerks slightly. The car has 98k on it and I am getting fed up.

I am calling the Dealer tommorrow and asking them to contact Honda directly. I want a brand new unit this time...a thiird replacement within 5k miles is asking too much of someone.
  • 03babymover03babymover Member Posts: 10
Actually, comparing any seating to that of a Volvo is a little unfair. We also have both a 99 S70 and an Odyssey (2003). I have yet to be in any other car with seats as good as our S70, except for the V70 we traded in to get the Odyssey. I drive the S70 and she drives the Ody.

On the Odyssey, with a bunch of fooling with the lumbar support backrest and seat tilt, it is possible to reach a fairly comfortable setting. Lucky my wife and I leave it at the same sttings (except as to how close the seat is to the steering wheel) so we don't have to deal with it changing all the time.
  • arayclinarayclin Member Posts: 6
I also have '00 EX with 65,000 miles on it. Transmission is good but I had to replace the radiator and two front bearings.
Hopefully Honda will give you a brand new trans instead of the rebuilt.

For last 2 days I have experienced trouble starting my 2004 ODY EX. I live in Northern California, so it is not very cold, mostly over 50 degrees. When I turn the key, I just hear a clicking sound. I have to turn the key complete OFF position, then try again. Repeat for 4-5 times before the engine would start. Has anyone experienced similar issues. The van is only 7 months old with a little over 12K miles.
  • jaybobjaybob Member Posts: 3
One idea I did come up with to at least minimize the shuttering of my van at about 50 to 55 MPH is to shift my van into the D3 gear. According to the manual this gear is used for both towing and city traffic. As a result you are only using the first three gears. Since my worst shuttering appears to happen when the transmission shifts from 3rd to 4th gear it has seemed to mitigate the issue for now. The engine runs a little higher in RPM (3200 RPM at 60 MPH) but I can live with that for while until I get it fixed for good by Honda. Since there is less slipping I am hoping that it keeps the transmission fluid temp down and keeps the tranny alive longer. Just an idea. Does anyone think this could be bad for the vehicle????
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
Does this happen with all the keys or just one? If not, check to see if the little green key lights up on the dashboard with any of th keys. You may have a bad chip in the key.

    Good Luck.

    Dear members,

My Dad purchased the 2005 Odyssey EX-L RES last week. Today we took the vehicle with barely 12 miles back to the dealer because it was making a strange noise. The service dept told us that they had to replace the steering pump. then shortly afterwards, they informed us that the alternator had to be replaced. My question is does this warrant our rights as consumer to request a replacement for a new vehicle? My Dad is very upset because a BRAND NEW car is giving us trouble already. The dealer is giving us the run around saying that problem is expected from any new vehicle and giving us a hard time. Any advice is appreciated.

    Regards, John

Probably not - check the lemon laws of your state but most typically follow the out of service 30 days or 3 attempts to repair.

    Good Luck.

when I checked internet. showed there was one recall on 2005 Odyssey already at last year. Don't remember what's the detail but something about steering wheel.
  • hungshyhungshy Member Posts: 74
Saw many complained about the seat comfort in 2005 Odyssey. I guess it depends on what was the car you have before this new Odyssey. I used to sit on either wood panel or slate chair since I was child. For many years I have car only equiped with clothes seat. First one with leather seat was 2003 Saab 9-3. In Fab we bought our new Odyssey w/leather. I found its seat comfort is little bit better than saab. my kid feel the same way too. I can see him enjoy the comfort most of time. Just some of my thought. :)

We need to secure our car seat to the middle seat in the second row. The seat belt is in the ceiling and works fine if we are using it as a seat. When we try to secure the car seat and make it tight it does not work. Has anyone had this problem or anyone have any success making it work. I am trying to avoid a trip to the dealership.
    Thanks! :confuse:
