I'm sorry that the two of you haven't had very pleasurable experiences with your triplets. However, the majority of us have been very happy with ours. There's nothing wrong with venting your frustrations, I just felt I had to offset the negativity.
I'm coming up on 2 years of ownership of my Envoy. I've never owned a more trouble free vehicle. I've only had to have the wiper motor replaced. Everything else is perfect. I would purchase it again in a heartbeat.
Good luck on your next purchases!

What kind of extended warranty did you get from GM after 2000 miles of use? I thought the GMPP was only available at purchase time. I would love to upgrade the 60,000 milage on my '03 SLT Envoy's GMPP but was told I couldn't. So far after 10,000 miles it has be flawless except for a 15 minute warranty repair on the license plate gasket.

Fiscus will have to answer that. I bought my GM extended warranty at delivery, but as I recall, one could buy it anytime up until the 1st anniversary date, but that the purchase price would be higher if not purchased at delivery. It's negotiable at delivery, so I presume it could be negotiable with a dealer at 1 year as well. I didn't buy my GMPP through the same dealer that I bought my Envoy. I phoned around and found it cheaper at another GM dealer.

My '02 Envoy will be 2 years old in 6 weeks. Have had no problem except for a slight sag in the passenger door weatherstripping, which I'll have them add some glue to sometime. My front bumper fascia was repainted at delivery since I noticed a couple small paint "blebs" on it. I haven't had the wiper motor problem, but I rarely drive in rain, although I do wash the vehicle occasionally, so probably get them wet then. So if it's a growing problem, hopefully there will be a TSB/recall on it someday.

You can purchase the GMPP extended warranty anytime while the vehicle is still covered under the 3/36000 original warranty.

The cheapest place to buy is probably online. Search for GM Protection Plan and you'll come across a number of dealers that sell the warranty online. I've bought this way for several of my GM cars/trucks and the price is usually about $200-300 lower than my local dealer. The warranty is honored at any GM dealership, even though you bought from another dealer.

Since they believe the rattle noise is somewhere in the engine, but don't know where, the dealer has decided to replace the entire engine in my '02 Trailblazer EXT.

I'll let you know when I get it back if this got rid of the rattle.

"..the dealer has decided to replace the entire engine in my '02 Trailblazer EXT."

That's certainly a lot more serious than the two things that were rattling on mine!

    Good Luck on that!

envoyed, Shortly after the engine was replaced I received an offer to buy the plan by mail. I don't know if the engine replacement had anything to do with the offer or not. I did not buy it through a dealer, but directly from G.M. I guess. I bought the Major Guard, 5yr, 75 k mile plan. It is really a 2 year, 39k mile plan. It starts after the basic warranty period. The cost was about $1500.00. they billed my credit card each month for a year. The most important feature of this plan is that it is transferable if I sell the car , some plans are not.One big feature of the major gaurd plan is that it covers all onboard computers, steering components and more. Read the past 13,000 or so posts and decide if you think it is worth it. Now, when someone tells me my engine sounds like it is going to fall apart when it's cold, it doesn't bother me. You can call 1-800-981-4677 to inquire about the plan.
Disclaimer: I do not work for or otherwise represent G.M. or benefit from my comments here.

is it necessary to post the number of visits we make to Edmunds? I realize someone is counting, but don't understand the benefit of posting it. I hope it is not because of the Patriot act.

I've been here 653 times! I guess that indicates perhaps I have way too much time on my hands..??

If you search your user name you will get everything you have ever posted too, and any reply with your name in it. Must be a conspiracy.

Thanks for the feedback. I assure you it has nothing to do with the Patriot Act! We're trying to improve the system and you'll continue to see more changes for a while.

Help! A friend at work has a stalling problem with her 2003 Trailblazer. I knew this was a problem with 2002's, but not with 2003's. Anyone else have this problem (my Envoy does not)? She has been to the dealer at least 8 times in an attempt to fix it. They did a cold start stalling
fix but this happens intermittently at other times. She is rightfully afraid to drive it and the dealer has been unable to duplicate. Chevy claims no knowledge of such a problem and has been very uncooperative. It should be eligible for the Lemon Law here in Wisconsin. Any comments
or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have an '03 and it stalled on me 2 times in about 6 months (during the summer), after having this update done it hasn't done it since. I could see it applying to your friend's trailblazer if they keep it in a heated (>70 degree F) garage or somehow the weather in Wisconsin is miraculously above 70...

    TSB #03-06-04-057 10/01/2003

Intermittent Hesitation, Stumble or Idle Stall after Soak, Harsh 1-2 Shift, Slipping 1-2 Shift Followed by a Harsh Engagement (Reprogram PCM)

    2002-2003 Chevrolet TrailBlazer
    2002-2003 GMC Envoy
    2002-2003 Oldsmobile Bravada
with 4.2L Engine (VIN S - RPO LL)

    Condition:
Some customers may comment on an intermittent hesitation/stumble or idle stall within minutes of starting after the vehicle has been sitting for several hours. Additionally, some customers with a 2003 model year vehicle may comment on a harsh 1-2 shift or 1-2 slip shift that has a bump feeling when 2nd gear engages.

    Cause:
This condition may be caused by the EVAP diagnostic test as it opens the purge valve for a few seconds and then closes it to verify proper emission sensor operation. If the purge canister is saturated, the EVAP system on-board diagnostic test may cause the vehicle to correct for a rich condition from the canister. The vehicle would then become lean when the purge valve closes at the completion of the test. This condition occurs primarily with high RVP fuel and after the vehicle sits for several hours in a warm ambient, above 21°C (70°F). A customer who takes short trips is more likely to experience this condition, as they don't have the drive cycle that would allow the purge canister to fully re-circulate the fuel vapor

Picked up my 2004 Envoy SLT (MSRP $40,900) about a month ago. Dealer seemed to want to move vehicles.
Put on about 1K miles on it.
So far so good. I have had very good luck with GM vehicles in the past and being a supplier to GM did not hurt on the price.

Vehicle seems to have a good amount of zip.
Gas mileage only around 15MPG in town and cold weather so far. Hopefully that can improve a little bit.

There is Slight windshield visual disortion when I look out edge of passenger side. Not really a big deal.

I think the Bose System w/ 6 CD Changer was the best sounding factory system, I have looked at. It is really impressive when listening to CD's.

Looking forward to watching this Group for a while.

I am usually a Chevy person, but my local GMC Dealer gave me a better deal on the Envoy, than the Chevy dealers with the Trailblazers, and I liked the Envoy look a little better.
  • smokiejoesmokiejoe Member Posts: 26
Also should add, there is a slight rattle from the top of the drivers and passenger window when a hard bump is taken.

It appears that the top of the glass may tap slightly against the hard rubber molding.

Again, not really a big deal.

I am wondering if anyone has any comments.

    Thanks.

Welcome to the group. As you'll soon find out some of us like the triplets and some of us don't like the triplets-but we still own them because we can't afford to sell them.

Weather stripping is a recurrent theme that might be needing replacing. Might want to see if silicone treatment on the weather stripping helps or on close examination it might reveal something else.

My '02 Envoy XL SLT is running great, bought new but now has 34K on it. Had a couple of warranty fixes that have not recurred. Bought the extended warranty just in case.

Greetings to everyone here on this board. I am the owner of an '03 TB LT and have been lurking here since late November to educate myself on problems & solutions related to this vehicle. First, I want to thank you for the information that led to my being a happy TB owner today.

Like many of you, I have had numerous warranty problems with my TB over the past 13 months, all of which are chronicled by others in the archives. I could fill up the page ranting about my problems and GMs initial responses, but since my ranting would not add new information to the board, I thought I would share with you some useful info that will add value to prior comments.

Most of my problems have been electrical in nature and I also had the 1500 RPM vibration/rumble described in various postings. The vibration problem was driving me nuts with no solution in sight until I read the following post from an earlier archived discussion group:

    #22 of 34 my $0.02 worth... by leadfoot4 Mar 13, 2003 (10:45 am)
I have a 1997 S-10 4x4. I had a vibration in it when it was new. The dealer rebalanced the tires twice, said it was "OK". The owner,(me) said "No way". Because I have very little patience, and some mechanical aptitude, I removed the rear driveshaft, and took it to the local d'shaft shop for a balance check. They called me a couple of hours later, and said it was too badly warped to just balance out the vibration. When I went back to pick up the shaft, the shop foreman pointed to the sticker on the shaft, and said there's your problem. The sticker said "Made at Three Rivers Plant". He told me that they were getting in quite a few shafts from there that just weren't assembled "square". They made a new shaft for me, I installed it, and the truck was smooth as silk.
Took the original shaft back to the dealer, and after a few minutes of "discussion" and a ride around the block, they agreed that the shaft was indeed the problem and had GM reimburse me for the repair. They said that if they ordered another shaft through GM parts network, it would also be made at the three rivers plant, so it could be bad also. Just somthing for you guys to ponder....

I pursued the warped driveshaft idea and indeed it was my problem. However, it took two attempts at balancing by different shops to get it right. My drive shaft was also made at the Three Rivers plant and the tech who finally balanced it right said that T.R. plant has been producing badly balanced drive shafts for about 10 years. For those of you who need this done or are just interested, this is for the REAR drive shaft only, and the magic specs are less than .003 runout; and balance under .038 at both ends of the drive shaft. Cost to straighten & balance $45. and the dealer paid for it under warranty. Incidentally while I was contemplating a buyback I test drove a 2004 Pathfinder and it had the same problem -

Speaking of warranties, with all the problems I experienced I wanted some assurance from GM that my high-quality vehicle would not become a financial liability after the 36 month warranty ran out. Fortunately for me (fortunately?) all of my problems appeared within the window that qualified my new vehicle as a 'lemon' under my state's law. I had received the usual GM foot-dragging "it's a normal characteristic of the car" treatment. So, I took action and it got results. Here is how it unfolded:

    1. I researched my rights under my state's lemon law and filed an official complaint to document my new car problems BEFORE I hit the end of the window. That got me on record and they were put on notice.
    2. All along the way I felt they pressured me to settle for less (in a passive-agressive way). I knew what I wanted and I stuck to it. I wanted to know they would stand behind their engineering at least until my payments were finished (I had not purchased an Extended Service plan when the vehicle was new - silly me, I expect a $32K purchase should last more than 3 years).
    3. I kept moving the legal process forward when the outcome was not acceptable. We were just about to go to arbitration when they finally offered me a Major Guard plan with $0 deductible and higher than average miles so I'm covered for major repairs for 2 more years after my standard warranty expires. The moral of this story is complain on record early and don't give up. Perhaps one day they'll realize quality is more than just marketing words on a glossy brochure. I knew there was a reason why I was a Toyota fan. This is what I got for 'buying American' after 9/11.

So, thanks again and I hope you all find this information useful and (sorry, tblazed) I vote for the 'butt-end-in-the-air-with-roof-racks' look, yes the lowered TB looks like the Forrester, but not quite like a minivan, however I made you all a picture so you can decide for yourselves:

Do not what I must have done to someone, but found last night that someone had provided me with a free mod for my TB. Was very courteous of them to spare my hood and roof when they decided to key my truck.
A trip to the auto body shop today and the verdict is a total repaint is required.
The only lemon aide I can make of these lemons will be that the shop is willing to work with me on custom blending a more aggressive metal flake.
I have always wished I could get a bit more dazzle from the truck after detailing and now apparently I will. They will spray four panels for me each with a different level of roughness to the particles and allow me to chose my favorite.
No premium cost to do this either. Only adder for me will be the re painting of the bumpers to match

I can’t help but notice what a gas pig my truck is when temperature is really low with high usage of 4wd on snow packed roads for several days. The range on a tank (according to the DIC) in 2hi, warm temp and hiway miles can be over 310 miles (500 km). Lately its been 217 miles (350 km). I don’t sit idling to much but collectively it could be a lot.
Has anybody done any hard numbers on their truck this who lives more in the Northern U.S. ?(this is the last time I’m going to show both units unless someone else who actually gives a @#$ chimes in)
    Cameokid and smokiejoe welcome.
Got to wonder about those comparison photos? With similar trim packages (fender flares etc) you just might have something there with the forester.

With the GF rear springs, in combination with the Hotchkis bar/bushing kit, I achieved exactly what I was after- a lower center of gravity and superior handling characteristics. I couldn't care less if a few people can't tell the difference between a Subaru and a Chevy. My goal was to tune the suspension for better street handling, cornering and stability. I achieved that goal.
  • ficussficuss Member Posts: 541
It's what you don't plan for that provides the greatest surprises. Relax Ed, it's just someones opinion. Besides, some people may like the look of the passive, subdued Forester over the aggressive, muscular looking Trailblazer. Thanks for providing the brand names of the suspension parts, now Subaru can get a second provider for the look they want.
  • ron_mron_m Member Posts: 186
Personally, I think tblazed's lowered TrailBlazer looks really, really sharp. Although I don't necessarily think that it resembles a Forrester all that much, or a minivan either for that matter, it does remind me of the Pathfinder's leveled-out stance. Which is a 'good thing' for what tblazed's end goal was. TBs that are raised up in the rear end may appear to be more muscular or aggressive in most people's opinion, but I have heard some critics describe this look as "redneck". I don't agree with that assessment by any stretch of the imagination myself, but I have heard people bust on the TBs for the "jacked up rear end" appearance.

At any rate, once again, I think tblazed's TB looks great being lowered--or leveled out. Whichever you prefer to call it.

cameokid: Where would I go to have my drive shafts balanced? I want to look into this.

I have had the vibrations in my peddle since day one, and I gave up trying to have the dealership do anything about it. I have been just living with it!

Mark, I found my shop by doing a google search on 'drive shaft' + my state. A number of hits came up - but not all of them do cars. There are lots of shops that do commercial trucks and don't have the equipment to do auto drive shafts. You just have to call a few of them and find out who does, and ask around who is good.

As I mentioned previously, mine was balanced twice before it was right (also, the U-joint was replaced in the process for some reason, I'm not sure why - my husband thinks it's possible they may have damaged it while removing the shaft from the car). The first shop they sent it to did not balance it correctly, and I still had a bad vibration but now it was occurring at 2100 RPM instead of 1500 RPM as before. At highway speeds my whole car would vibrate so much I couldn't see out my rear view mirror at times.

I got lucky the second time because I not only found someone who has the equipment to do cars, but has experience balancing drive shafts for race cars - so his standards are high. He let me see the drive shaft on the balancing equipment and the measurements before and after balancing so I could be confident it was done right. Write down the specs from my previous post, take them with you, and make sure your shop meets or exceeds these measurements. These are supposed to be an industry standard. I have read that some drive shafts are too badly warped to be straightened. Mine was correctable. I heard a new drive shaft can cost around $1000. If you live in the Washington DC area, I can give you the name of the shop I used because the guy was truely knowledgable and took pride in his work.

I've been driving around with my newly balanced driveshaft for a couple of days now and I have been unable to recreate the vibration. Woo-hoo! I finally can ENJOY driving my 1 y.o. 'new' truck.

Here's a URL for a drive shaft shop that has locations in several parts of the country - Baltimore, Denver, Milwaukee, and Washington DC

    http://a1driveshaft.com/abouta1.html

Their web site says "A-1 Drive Shaft can repair, manufacture or refurbish virtually any OE Drive Shaft. A-1 Drive Shaft specializes in custom made Drive Shafts, if you require a Driveline that is non-existent we can probably manufacture it for you."

Many folks on this board have experienced the squeek from the hood latch mechanism rubbing on the u-shaped hood bracket. I found that oil or grease on the bracket would solve the problem for a short while, then it would return. In frustration I put about three or four wraps of black electrical tape on the bracket and several months later the squeek has not returned. Give it a try.

I have an 03 Envoy SLT with 5500 miles. During this cold weather in the Northeast, I have noticed a ticking sound from under the hood when the vehicle is cold. Before I take it back to the dealer, does anyone have any idea what could be wrong? I had the oil changed just before the cold hit and the level is fine.

    Thanks in advance.

How are Recalls initiated? Is there something that I need to do (such as file a complaint) that will contribute towards a Recall?

Problem: The other day a gust of wind threw open the door on my '03TB and pulled the door hinge from the body so badly that the door could not be opened or closed. The dealer bent the hinge back, allowing the door to be opened and closed, but said the hinge has been weakened and if a similar incident happens the problem will be worse. It sounds to me like GM has not adequately manufactured the hinge to the body. I expected to see the hinge welded to the body, but it looks like it is not. The Dealer's Body Shop said they are having more of these problems surface because the doors on the TB/Envoys weigh so much and can easily cause the hinge to separate from the body.

What can I do to contribute to a Recall so this manufacturing problem can be corrected?

I too have noticed that in a strong cross wind, the door will pull away from the frame making a loud sucking noise (which, can scare the #$@# out of you the first time it happens.) This seems to happen mostly in the winter with the strong winds.

I definitely think there is some type of bad design going on there.

That's a problem with the weatherstripping not getting a tight enough seal. You see, when you hear that noise from the door seal, that's your cue that it's windy so you need to be careful when opening your door so you don't wind up with a broken hinge.
  • previousamigopreviousamigo Member Posts: 130
I also had the loud wind noise with a strong cross wind that would pull the doors out. After 2 attempts to adjust both driver and passenger doors, the third attempt finally fixed the problem with all new door seals (maybe from the Rainer)and under warranty. I still have the "normal" wind noise but not that obnoxious noise when a strong cross wind hits.

My work is shutting down now because we are over a foot of snow with 40mph wind gusts. Time to go bust some drifts (carefully) and pick up my wife from her job. YAHOO!
  • kpp14kpp14 Member Posts: 62
flyersrule, I had the door pull away from the frame a couple times as well. Happened while passing through the low pressure zone on the leeward (down wind) side of a transport into the high pressure zone of the front of the transport. Scare the @#$ out of you is an understatemnet...thought he had hit me! I thought that might be the problem and no one has mentioned this until now. Bye the way exactly what do the flyers rule.
previousamigo, we have a 14" inches coming down on us as well except my wife borrows the truck for work (and has no respect for the interior or the snow drifts).

"Gas mileage only around 15MPG in town..."
It will get better as the engine breaks in.

"There is Slight windshield visual distortion when I look out edge of passenger side."

They're all like this. The distortion is cause by the asymmetric windshield. (The outer layer of glass is thicker than the inner to help prevent against chipping.)
  • hardhawkhardhawk Member Posts: 702
I have an even more bizarre door story. My '02 Envoy has a little wind noise in cross winds. It also rattles when going over washboard roads. The next problem was when you opened the driver's side rear door when the driver's door was closed, the front of the rear door hit the rear of the front door, causing the trailing edge of the driver's door to bend in! I pounded it out with a rubber hammer and it did it again. Needless to say, the doors are not adjusted properly. Dealer is sending it in to a body shop for a fix. BTW, I have never had the any door blow open in a strong wind. I don't know how the doors got out of proper adjustment, but somehow they did, as the denting did not appear until after I had it over a year. The dealer is quite helpful and it is under warranty, however, so it is really not a big deal to me.

You know what is bad, is that most of the shafts are within GM's SPEC. and we still experience problems with vibration and harshness. Wake up GM!!! you have to get better!!!
  • ficussficuss Member Posts: 541
That's why the company is called General Motors, not Specific Motors. We should be glad they don't build bridges or sky scrapers. Imagine recalling a suspension part for a bridge. How about an airplane door that would leak air when exposed to a cross wind. Or how about this; Hello passengers this is your captain. We will have to shut down the engines and wait 5 minutes to attempt to restart them to reboot the instrument cluster, as the instruments are now all reading zero and we don't know where we are. I wonder if G.M. had anything to do with the plans for the other Mars probes, the ones that didn't make it?
I think I saw a warning label on the inside of the engine compartment: Caution, do not attempt to use the windshield wipers in the rain, they may short out and stop working!!! The legal department has more minds than the design dept.

    Oh well

    Hi all,

2002 Trailblazer with 82,000 plus now. Ticking sounds have been there since day one. No harm yet--wait till you get the clutch fan going bad! Should happen about 45,000--that will wake u! and the repair price! Wind noise started just awhile ago in the drivers door. Perhaps the Hosts would know--I think that some time ago--last year i recall--one of the frequent visitors to this site found a cure--I think that it was glue in the right places around the door moulding. Right now in Jersey it ain't been above 10 degrees in a while so I think that I'll wait for a few good days befor looking further--then again it could be shrinkage due to weather?

All have a great day!! Oh by the way--Spark plugs
are about to be needin changin any body buy these things yet? Hav been looking and prices seen to be a little on the high side--but should I be surprised?

As the owner of an 02 Envoy, i am noticing a "looseness" comming from the front-end. It only happens when driving over irregular roads, such as cobble-stone, or while driver over rail-road tracks, or say on a grassy field at low speeds. You can feel it in the steering wheel shaft, closer to the front -end...not to say it is related to to steering shaft...tough description, but has anyone else had this problem. PS, of course the dealer said they could not feel it..
  • aldan93aldan93 Member Posts: 202
I have found that jumping railroad tracks and hitting blow down trees will jar my coffee out of the holder, NAH! Actually I have that problem, near your left foot feels like maybe its loose or something? I don't no the roads are so bad around hear I'm pretty well acustumed to it!!Western New York!

About $4 each is what I've seen for the ACDelco 41-965 plugs. Not bad for 100,000 mile plugs. Easy to change too. A lot easier anyway than on a V-type engine.

Just be thankfull it doesn't have that other very common warning label: "MADE IN CHINA"!

There are over 1 billion people made in China. they seem to be doing ok. they must be doing something right. Did you hear that Pres. W's brother Neil has an electronics company in China, his circuits may very well be in the tripletts.
I don't think there are any 100% made in U.S.A. products anymore. Is a product made in America by an illegal alien sponsored by Pres. W an American product?

I had the same problem with my 2002 Envoy . . . it felt like something was loose in the front end and made under carriage noises going over bumps. The problem was the front bushings (left and right side). I believe it was the stabilizer bar bushings. Once replaced, looseness and rattle have gone (over 2 months ago). There is a TSB for this problem, and it was replaced under warranty (30,000 miles on vehicle at the time).

The new Envoy Denalis will be unveiled next week at the Chicago auto show along with the Chevrolet Uplander, Pontiac Montana SV6, and the Buick LaCrosse.

Can someone post the GM part number for the front wiper refills for an Envoy? I'd like to order some online and the manual only states 20.0 inches.
