Greetings: I've got a '99 300M with the upgraded (single) CD player. When the CD gets near the end (last song) the cd player skips repeatedly and sometimes stops briefly and restarts. And skips... Anyone else encounter this type of problem? Solution? This is problem #3 (window motors, speed sensor), although not a major problem, yet. Any thought appreciated, as always.
Thanks, Bill

Assuming your problem occurs with more than one CD, and they aren't all ones that you have burned on your computer, sounds like your unit needs servicing/replacement. Still under warranty?
Yeah, that horizontal scrolling problem is indeed the reason behind that.
We get a ton of complaints everytime a screen does what it is doing for me now - if scotian's post with the very long limit appears on your page, every message after that requires horizontal scrolling to read, line by line.
It would be much more polite to our membership in general to not create posts that make this happen. You folks who follow this discussion closely will probably only experience the difficulty for a post or two. There are far many others, a lot of them lurkers, that will have to contend with the horizontal scrolling for as many as 19 posts after that one.
A lot of folks really do get upset by this, believe me! :-)
After reading http://members.nbci.com/chrislee1/airfilter.html, I was wondering if it would be worth it to add a separate filter to my direct-to-engine air intake, which I suspect is the hose in the upper right corner of this pic:
It's not a big deal to me, but the URL is all on one line, so I only see about 40% of each line and have to scroll to see the rest. I use Netscape 4.7. Perhaps another way of doing it might be to enter it as follows: but use the < signs in place of parentheses: (a href="REALLYLONGURL)click" here(/A). That way the URL would not display. I assume you'd still have to enter it via spellcheck . . . .
I bought a set for my Ford Explorer. They are heavy duty, solid pieces. I will post a few pics of them. I was told the 300M rotors would look the same. All the rotors have a special coating on them. It can be read on the webpage. They also do group buys which would get them a little cheaper.
If I can remember this the next time I need it, I don't need to care about the 115 character limit. Hosts - Tell people to do it this way in the future.
Do the late 2001 plenums (without the restrictions) have a different part number than the early 2001 plenums (with the restrictions)? If so, do you know what the late 2001 plenum part number is? I might then not have to wait for the "2002 catalog" to come in.
Do the late 2001 and 2002 plenums still have this ribbing (not that it matters, I suppose):
Since even the most bored-out TB (70mm) is still just 2-3/4", an uninterrupted and unobstructed air passage of around 3" should more than suffice, and a late 2001 plenum cleared out of its remaining obstructions should do just fine. If I install a double-cone air filter in the air box I will get its advantages plus a source of cold air (which is not necessarily the same as a "cold air intake", according to http://reviews.firebirdv6.com/knfilter.html ).
Keeping the factory pipes may have less noise as compared to the replacment 3" pipe. I think the only real advantage of the replacement pipes is that the air has a slightly less chance of hanging around long enough in the pipe to heat up a little before being sucked into the engine. I doubt it is at all significant.
The hole in the inner fender that the air box connects to -- is it a full circle, or is it the shape of the connecting tube on the air box?
Thanks for deleting that post and reposting using the href tag instead!
You know what, I heard somewhere once that using the spell check would defeat the 115 character limit and I tried it, but it didn't work for me. This was a long time ago, just after we moved here to Web Crossing, so I guess something has changed since then.
The stock plenum (with sleeves removed) has a couple things going for it. You can see in Scotian's link that it mounts on a factory bracket and also has a fitting for the smaller hose coming from atop the engine -- not that you couldn't accomodate these things in whatever replacement you fabricate.
Scott, the opening I believe, matches the connector on the stock air box. I remember it was a circle but with a slice cutoff one side. If that makes any sense to you.
I took the bracket that came with my S&B and bolted it to my inner fender and used the boot off the stock air box to seal things. My filter then connects to the bracket as intended by the manufacturer, so I'm at least getting some cold air.
Yeah after busting my plenum up, it looks bad doesn't it. The pic Scott referenced was to show the ribs inside.
I ordered a Daytime Running Light Module and Clear Tail Lenses from the Dealer today. Hopefully I will have them Tuesday. Part number for the DRL is 4602229-AC, $95. Clear (Jewel) Tail lights part numbers are 4805592-AD amd 4805593-AD and are $186 each. DRL module is supposed to plug right into a socket in the fusebox.
today i ran over something cement or what not coming out of the parking lot at a army function, and did a little bit of damage. you know under the doors, under the car, but where there is still paint, sratched that a little. the spare tire box under the trunks, dented it a bit, and pushed up/scraped the bottom of, my exhuast tip. all on the right side. sad i know, but, nuthing i cant fix up this weekend. certainly nuthing major, still sux though. lol get i need to be more careful coming outa torn up parking lots.
I'm not sure if "target=new" works here (it did on Well Engaged, but I dunno about here) to make a new window, but "target=_blank" (note the underscore) does indeed work for that purpose. Leave off the quotes and add it at the end of your url before the first ">" which would precede the hot-spot (which would be followed by "< /a >" without the spaces).
About the gears for the 42LE differential. He said the chain is the same but the gears are slighly different. Meaning that you would have to change both gears. You can also change the pinion gear, but that is a lot more work. He is going to check into it further for warranty issues. The only concern was the chain, if it would withstand the extra load. The other thing in question was the computer would think that a certian speed and RPM's were in operiation when in fact they weren't. Could cause shifting concerns. Could the ECM be programed to accept the new gears???
300michael - Thanks so much for the pics! Does it look like all of the restrictions can be removed if done carefully? Also, can the two ends be separated?
Otto - Do the late-2001 & 2002 plenums have all of these restrictions removed, including the ones in the end that connects directly to the TB?
As most of you know, a few weeks ago, our M was at the dealer again for the pulling, weatherstripping, blinking lights, and supposedly the steering wheel. Well, they checked out the first three and mostly did what they were supposed to but totally messed up with the wheel. Here's what the results were:
1. Not sure about the pulling, but after a tire rotation and re-allignment of the suspension, the car had a new vibration on smooth roads and the wheel would shake pretty bad whenever you put the brakes on. After a few days, the braking shake wasn't as bad as before and the vibration on the road got less and less and the car seems to be back to normal. We told them about it vibrating when you put the brakes on, and they said they'll check it out.
2. Weatherstripping is no longer an issue. A couple spots look loose but they're better than before.
3. Interior lights blinking was supposedly undetermined one time and this time it was a "loose wire". Yeah right.
4. Our steering wheel had melted and they were to order a replacement. They told us it was in but it then took them a day to figure out that it wasn't there afterall. Great service don't you think?
Well, since then, the car has gone back again. This time they swore that they actually had the steering wheel in and would check out a couple other things. They did change the steering wheel and it is much better than before. I'm not sure if they changed the material or what, but this one has nicer looking and feeling leather and a plusher, slightly padded feel to it. We like it a lot more--I hope this one doesn't melt too.
As for the lights, they again said "Oh, just another loose wire. Beats the heck out of me but I don't think that's it.
In another note, they told my wife that the shaking when you hit the brakes was because our rotors are bad. I figured this would be the case, I just hope it works.
Oh and for the catcher of the day, you should here what one guy there told us. Since we've been there so much, they now come out from behind the window to speak to us and this time they brought our car around to where my wife was standing. The guy driving said "Nice car", so she jokingly asked him if he wanted to buy it from her. Guess what he said? "Oh no, I never buy Chryslers". Well, enough said, I'm going to bed.
Thanks for pics! i plan on takin a look at all taht this weekend, and if i feel safe enough, remove all restrictions. am i to take out the extra tubes? and yes, i will spend all day doing it if needed. but if you guys think that it would be a good idea, and help out (NOT hurt) then ill tackle it. why would chrysler make it like that then? i dont know...
ROGOR: don't worry, im keepin this one!! (probably..(heh))

sdmike-Rental Problems.
Well, I went with the cheapest rental in Houston, from Dollar. I mean, all I had to do is get from the airport to downtown; maybe 10 miles. Got a Dodge Neon for $23. They urged me to take the optional insurance for "only" an additional $17! When I declined, they made me inspect the car and indicate every blemish before I left the lot on a form and turn it in, with the warning I would be held responsible for any thing they found that I might have not noticed. Talk about coercive! After all that annoyance I finally get on my way. As soon as I got up to 55 the wheel started shaking, and at 60 it was so bad I had to slow down. What a POS! and after all that irritation.
They had a couple of 300M and said they rent for $79/day, pretty steep.
I was just looking at the 2002 300M pricing configurations and saw this:
STD Radio: AM/FM CD w/Changer Control OPT Radio: Cassette/CD/Amp/9 Infinity Speakers OPT Radio: Cassette/4 CD/Amp/11 Infinity Speakers
What kind of BS is this? It used to be just two stereo systems: standard Infinity with 9 speakers and optional Infinity with 320 watts and 11 speakers. Now the formerly standard system is optional? Screw that!
Perhaps there are other corners they cut to lower the base price as much as they did. It's just marketing. Personally, I don't care a whole lot. I plan to hold on to my '00 M for lots of years, so resale value and what DC may do that affects resale value don't mean much to me. If they can sell more M's if they strip 'em down a bit, that's OK. I always like seeing M's on the road!
I've appreciated occasional opportunities to try out rental cars on business trips, and I try to get cars I might be interested in (easier if someone else is picking up the tab!). Several years ago I rented an Intrepid and was favorably impressed. That caused me to buy a used '93 Concorde, which later led (happily) to buying my M. If it weren't for that rental experience I might not be driving this fabulous car today!
CHRYSLER is definitely cutting corners, my sis just bought a 2002 Sebring LXI Sedan look how bad she got ripped by buying a newer model, oh the 01's had a 1500 rebate she got 1000.
the 2001's came with this package Luxury Group Includes AutoStick automanual gear selection, cargo net, universal garage door opener, electroluminescent, security group, Premium Gold speakers with 120-watt amplifier and 16" x 6.5" chromed aluminum wheels. $1565-200=1365
This is what she got on her 02: Luxury Group seats-leather trimmed bucket (were std on LXI) security alarm sentry key theft deterrent system locks-power auto central locking garage door opener-universal speakers-prem gold w/120 watt amp instr cluster-electroluminescent cargo net $1465-200=1265
of course big bro wasn't with her to tell her NO! so she has no autostick, no chromies, but hey she did get a cargo net. oh she had to get an aftermarket keyless entry, and she bought the top of the line sebring.
yes the new plenum still has all those ribs inside. and the rubber at the end that goes onto the TB is still there http://community.webshots.com/photo/20847684/20848687AQXGrivngH in this pic ,see all that rubber at the bottom , cut it out . as for part # sorry know idea if they are different
Av -if you do have the studs on your car then you could actually make your own brace that goes from side to side , its only a metal bar with a hole on each end, no need to buy it from the dealer.
More bad news , yesterday the plant was informed that it will be closed for a two week layoff starting Sept 17 ,is nobody buying our cars???
You're right. Driving torn-up rentals and my wife's '93 Grand Voyager really makes me appreciate my M.
Gas Mileage: Last tank was mostly highway driving at 75 mph. Almost 21 mph. My long term MPG is only 17 on the computer. Think I'll order an S & H OEM replacement filter and a set of the platinum sparkies, about which others have had good comments . I already bought some "liquid wrench" to apply to the TORX screws well in advance of trying to remove them from the coils. I think I remember a comment that they are captive screws. I have had a set of TORX screwdrivers for years from a Craftman set, and finally have a use for them.
if you go to the link posted in my last post you will see inside the rubber end that geta attached to the TB that rubber mound on the bottom of the tube. That is the restriction , cut out all the excess rubber and open it ip.make it smooth.
You dont have to tell me , I have seen it first hand. Now who pays for that mistake ME and the rest of the guys on the plant floor.Guess we will have to wait till 2004 to make some $$$
I got one of these and am VERY happy with it. It's a heavy duty deflector that mounts easily with 2 clips. It almost completely eliminates the wind noise and buffeting.
Recommended by Da Prez. I have no vested interest in this auction.
I feel really bad for this. I hope when they do things in 2004 they will do them better.
Unfortunately their behavior pattern does not suggest that. They hide under a shell like a turtle instead of coming out and making the product really competitive.
Is it possible to cleanly remove the plenum's smooth restriction given enough time and patience? I have patience for that, but not for waiting until the 2002 parts catalog comes out!
activated switch, sounds interesting to say the least. i might try this maybe in a week or two if i have 300 bucks to expt. with. that'll give me a good chance to dyno too....
Thanks for the CD thoughts. I am only playing CDs, not CDR (nor PC burned CDs). Luckily, I still have some warranty left and will have it investigated at 30k check up. Maybe I should just smack it! Hopefully, I'm done with problems for a while? Still dig the car, though. Goodbye Red Sox, hello Patriots!

As I previously mentioned, DC is altering the base radio/media player option across the product line as a (according to some article I read) cost-cutting move. I don't see why a top-of-the-line model, supposedly that's the 300M, wouldn't continue to offer the cassette/CD system as standard especially since that was the standard for the previous models.
Even with the extra $100 for the same sound system, the MSRP was $1050 less for one configuration and $1200 less for the 'M without any other options other than the sound system "upgrade".
BTW, the CD-only thing may be a sign of the times for I understand that many vehicle manufacturers are going that way, not even offering a cassette option.

unlike back in 1999, 2002 brings a lot of yummy competition:
Acura TL and TL-S
Nissan Maxima
Nissan Altima
Infiniti I35
these cars at least have the same amount of features as 300M for approximately the same amount of money.
Chrysler management should not have sat on their butts for a few years without making any significant improcements to the 300M.
