Watch out with inexpensive bikes...you really get what you pay for. I had a $279 Mongoose full suspension aluminum bike (from Sportsmart) and I managed to destroy it in a manner of a couple of weeks of moderate mountain biking. I broke the wheel, the chain, and the deraileur on different trips, and any reasonably hard riding "un-tuned" it horribly. I also found that a lot of power was lost in the "bobbing" of the rear suspension because of the cheap design. I probably put $200 in repairs into that $279 bike before I decided that it was a money pit. I figured it was better for some kid to ride it to school on the sidewalk than for me to ride it on the dirt. I sold it for $75.

I now ride a '00 Schwinn Rocket 88 full suspension bike. It is about 8 lbs lighter than the Mongoose (26lbs) and takes everything I can throw at it. It has Shimano XT components including a hollowtech crank set, Rockshox Judy Race 100mm shocks in front, and SID dual air shock in the rear. I've also upgraded some components for strength, weight and comfort, including a 10 degree Salsa riser and Titec Hellbent handlebars. Oh, I also put a split saddle on it to save my goodies. :) It's more of a cross country bike, but it handled the Mammoth downhill just fine. It also climbs like a mountain goat. I got it for a steal. It normally sells for $1,300, but I found it market at $999 at an REI 20% off sale. They took 20% off the $999, so I got it for about $800. :)

Once you start spending more time in the saddle and start trying some challenging stuff you'll want to upgrade. You'll also want to replace your open pedals with clips...makes a WORLD of difference.

Here's someone selling one on eBay.

Talk about junk science! I suppose the author of that junk article thinks that airbags would have given the passengers of the doomed airliners a fighting chance.

the asbestos story makes sense to me. I think asbestos is widely used in metallurgy as a heat insulator.

ive spoke with av, talked to him awhile, he's alright guys, however im still a bit worried about him. you wouldnt believe the crap im seein on the news as we speak, as far as what some ppl are saying, although im sure most of you are seeing the same thing. remember, im never home to see the news anymore!

on a different (interesting.. ) note, i raced a lexus today, dont know what model, he couldnt hang. almost but not enought heh. then we chatted at the next red light on how nice our cars were. its a good day when you can race someone and joke about it, alot of ppl get attitudes ya know...

someone complained about a noise from the rear window area when the ac was running. I bet it may be due to the shrinking weatherstrip problem others here including myself have experienced. Check the door weather strip with the door open to see if you can find an air space between the gasket and the door. If there is a gap, it may cause a wind noise when ac is running.

My thoughts are with all my fellow Americans as well as my brethren in Israel who also must protect themselves against terrorism and radicals. The United States, Israel, and the rest of the world now share a common enemey; Terrorism must be stopped and freedoms of democracy restored. Hopefully, we will not see a repeat of the horrible events of this week.

Take off the passenger side dash end cover. It snaps off just like the one on the drivers side, that covers the fuse box. Check to see if the joint has the foam insulation, and that the screws are tight. If not you could add apiece of carboard to seperate the two plastic sections and get rid of the noise.
sorry about the flag guys, I guess it takes time for it to change. God Bless the United States of America!!!!!!!!!!

News Flash!! AMERICAN FLAG LEAVES SCRATCH MARKS ON PATRIOTIC 300M!

Greetings friends. In an effort to show support for this great country of ours, and to remember those who needlessly perished this week in New York and Washington D.C., many people here in L.A. (and I suppose everywhere else..) are flying that symbol of our great country, the American flag on their vehicles.

This type of flag waving seemed to become popular this year with the support of a "local" Basketball team, the L.A. Lakers. Vehicles with one, two, three and more of these flags were a common sight.

With the events of this week, I purchased two American flags attached to flexible plastic handles which attach to the window tops. Much to my surprise, I'd realized that the flags made out of plastic I'd purchased on a busy street corner, lightly scratched the paint of my car while flapping in the wind while driving.

I'd quickly found out that there are similar flags, made out of nylon, which are "paint friendly" (if you can find them).

Two nylon models now adorn my blue beauty.

    Hope you're all well.

    God Bless America.

The following URL is for a site that offers an explanation about why the 2002 Special doesn't have the engine HP increased to 300. You decide if you think the explanation is plausible. I believe some here have posted similar conjecture.

At the Car & Truck News site :

     http://www.car-truck.com/chryed/buzz/b091201.htm

Once there, scroll down the page for the info about the Special.

Mike, sounds like you got a serious bike! I am just a novice, so anything more than what I bought I could not justify.

My bike does have Shimano gears and V braking system, Zenith handle bar and seating area shaft, Zoom handle bar neck and side handle bar grips. I guess this is good enough for now, but thanks for the info on bikes.

"When I growup, I want to be like Mike"! AKA, I will upgrade later. *_O

We need to talk one of these days!
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
LOL! Heck, before long you'll be debating whether to go for a drive in your M or for a ride on your bike. I hate to admit it, but sometimes Big Red loses out. ;) Oh, good news! I found out today that I lost another 6 lbs this past week. That makes 11 in two weeks! Whohoo!! I'm excited because not only are my XL shirts now fitting a little big, but I have 11 less pounds to drag up the mountain on my bike. My M gas mileage should improve too! lol

The problem seems to be a common one in 99's. The circuit breaker keeps tripping and I can't roll the windows up or down. I have heard that the motors was bad and just want to get the boards opinion and advise on what the next step is. (dealer fix or do it yourself.) I am compitant with tools and once upon a time was a mechanic. Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks for the welcome Pat.

I have a '99 300m and have had two window motors (regulators) replaced (so far). Both times, without warning, the windows simply stopped working, luckily in the closed position. Both were replaced under warranty by a dealer. The other two have been fine, although I'm kinda hoping that they fail while I'm still under warranty!
Other '99 issues to be aware of include the speed sensor failures related to the tranny. This just happened to me. Tranny goes into "limp mode", which is 2nd gear. Fairly easy fix, also warranty work. Some people had issues with the Goodyear tires, mine have been ok.
    Still, a great car!

Don't forget to give blood, all!

'21 Dark Blue/Black Audi A7 PHEV (mine); '22 White/Beige BMW X3 (hers); '20 Estoril Blue/Oyster BMW M240xi 'Vert (Ours, read: hers in 'vert weather; mine during Nor'easters...)

  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
Maybe a Yuma meet? lol! November 10 looks as good as anything else. Still run the risk of a wife attempted veto, but no date would change that. :/
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
There have been long lines at the Red Cross for days now due to the outpouring of support by the American people. Don't forget, our country needs blood all the time. So, I hope that if any of you decided not to wait in line this week, please make it a point to give over the next week or months.

Does anyone know of a group taking donations to help support the families that lost loved ones? I have nothing against money going to the Red Cross and others for helping support the clean-up operations, but what I'd really like to find is an organization that will distribute the money directly to the families.

If and when there is a Phoenix club event, I will be there too! I will really enjoy meenting you and the gang there.

Mike if you fly in, you can ride shootgun with me!
But I would really like to see Big Red, with all those pics I have seem of her.

About biking. I bought my nine year old son a Mongoose freestyle bike with pegs two weeks ago. For some reason he thinks that the bike will help him do tricks or in other words, do the tricks for him! Go figure.

I ride to lose lbs too. Me and my wife had our thirteenth wedding anniversary on this past Weds. She brought home a surprise Ice Crean cake from 31 Flavors. I have been nibbleing on it everyday afterwork. Tonight is formal dinning night for our anniversay. Great eats, great deserts, and greater deserts(*_O)! I will need a long bike ride in the morning!

I am glad to hear that riding has helped you lose those unwanted lbs. I can lose and 10 lbs too.
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
Congrats on your anniversary! Mine is on the 19th of this month. On my 40th birthday I decided that men aren't supposed to have boobs (grin) and started my weight loss program. I think for me the biking is more mental than physical, but I'm sure it helps. For me it's a balanced diet and a little better living through chemistry. ;)

Easy, that was me that had the ghostly whirring noise. I sat in the back seat and localized the noise as definitely coming from inside the door. When I ran the window down and up the noise stopped. It only happened when the A/C was turned on. That is the mystery. Must be a short somewhere. No reoccurance yet. My front seat passenger's window control does not function sometimes, but can be controlled from the driver's console controls. That sounds like a bad switch, but it is pretty intermittent.

Greetings! Have just returned from the Bank's remote site, where they are under a lock down. Went there to pick up a pc that I won in a lottery, but seems all has been cancelled die the WTC tragedy. I had no way of finding out whether or not they had cancelled this, so went anyway; and combined the trip to see my mom who is not too far from there.
Okay, light show on the dashboard. Lights affected: transmission gear indicator, radio lights (all if its on...I frequently drive sans radio noise.......a personal thing, I guess..).
I've read/been told that this ocurrs when the light switch is in "A" mode (AUTO). I have put switch on "O" (off) mode, but am by nature lazy (my S.O. says..). Some of us here on this board have had this same problem, and am asking how this is is corrected--is there a TSB on this?
Also, when turning on AC in car, I get a groaning/think noise from the right front engine area when I do so. Anyone have THIS problem, and is there a TSB on this? Have a 2000 Bright Silver Metallic Clear Coat M named eMily.
    Any help appreciated---

doc - I have a 99LHS that exhibits the same problem and I have never used "auto" -mode (well, OK, once..just to see if it worked!) It seems to randomly go into "funeral" mode. I usually just turn the rotating "brightness" control all the way up and then all the way down and the flickering stops...until the next time I drive at night. Weird. If anyone gets their flickering light problem cured by having the switch or illumination control replaced, let me know. I'm out of warranty and don't want to spend the $$ unless I'm reasonably sure of a cure.

BTW, all of us at the shore in South Jersey are glad you are alive and well. I am still numb. I am originally from Bergen County and can't imagine the skyline without the towers....

    Hey guys,

My 2001 style taillights came in and I modified them to have the Innermost lamp turn on when braking, per 300Micheal's information. Thanks Mike.

Interestingly, the 1999 has the middle lamp as running light only, whereas the 2001 uses the innermost one. The shape is the same, but the sockets and bulb types in use has changed for the better. One interesting difference is the bulbs I have are 3057 in the 2001 assembly and 3157s in the 1999 assembly. I've seen the 3157s in the stores, but did not see the 3057s. Anyone know the difference? The 2001 also uses this bulb, dual filament on the inner one that only is wired for running lights. The 1999 used a small dash lamp there.

What we have done is drill out the unused connector hole and insert a piece of solid wire in there so that it touches the contact on the bulb when the bulb is plugged in it's socket. To connect the other end, you can splice it in somewhere, or stick it in beside the same wire on the middle bulb. The wires are encased in a rubber protector that you can insert the solid wire into far enought to get a connection. The rubber forms around both wires and appears to hold just fine. A couple of ty-raps to hold things in place and viola! Three brake lights on each side.

I was in the parts dept the other day at the local 4* and noticed the Chrysler Navigation system brochures.

The unit is $1800. Ouch, but very competitive btw. It's a handheld or pedestal mounted unit with a separate control box that goes under the seat I guess. It takes a single CD I think for a region and there are like 3 regions. Purchase get you one unit and one CD. Install time was stated as 1.5 hour.

The bad, is the it is for 2000+ 300m. Not for 1999, although the parts guys and I can't see why it shouldn't work.

Anyone seen this or know of a reason why this wouldn't work on a 1999? Otto, can you shed some light on this?

Hey guys ... good news ... today was car show number 4 for me, and I won at this one as well. That makes me 4 for 4 this year. I wish that air suspension install didn't take so long, I missed almost every show I had planned for the year. =*( How is everyone else doing this year? How many of you guys actually show your cars?

First episode of the "light show" occured this past Thursday. Didn't post because of recent events. Will go to dealer, under warranty next week. Mine happened while going down a rough section of highway with running lights and lower fog lights on, my usual driving position. My regular headlights began to flash on which I saw reflected in the Police Officer's car in front of me. I'm sure he thought I was flagging him down. Hand signaled to him that I wasn't. Second episode was today. Same symptoms. I will post what my 5* finds.

This is part of what our PM said at a memorial service

Mr. Ambassador, as your fellow Americans grieve and rebuild, there will be
    no silence from Canada.

    Our friendship has no limit.

Generation after generation, we have travelled many difficult miles together.
Side by side, we have lived through many dark times, always firm in our
shared resolve to vanquish any threat to freedom and justice.

And together, with our allies, we will defy and defeat the threat that terrorism
    poses to all civilized nations.

Mr. Ambassador, we will be with the United States every step of the way.
As friends. As neighbours. As family.

The company that makes is is Visteon, and it is called NavMate. You should be able to get it for under $1500. You may want to check out some of the other companies. I did talk to installer, and they said no problem. The dealerships (Chrysler) started making it avalable to owners in 2000 that is why the listed dates. You can even install it on an old K car if you want to.

My 1999 did this one time. I could never get the dash lights to flicker again but mentioned it to my service manager while in for service. He said that 90% of the time the problem was due to a faulty switch. they replaced the switch and I have had no further trouble.

Thank you for sharing that with us. This is how it SHOULD be with all civilized nations!

Hope all is well with you. Saw on the news that Chrysler has donated $10 MILLION dollars to the families of the WTC disaster. I applaud them for their generosity. I see that many other companies have followed in their footsteps.

Just a reminder, I experienced a problem where my headlights WOULD NOT TURN OFF in bright sunlight. I had to turn off the car and turn it back on to eliminate the problem. It hasn't done it since. However, my outside temperature display appears to be messed up again. Two weeks ago, if you remember, it displayed 64 degrees constantly. Today it was 74 degrees...even thought it was in the low 80s. Yesterday it couldn't decided if it was 80 or 90. Otto, think this is the sensor or the computer?

thanks for response to my post, valhs.....This is the second time that this happened, where the first time, the dash, radio AND headlights gave me a light show plus the clicking noise from the left dash area which someone said was the solenoids making their lectrical connections.
The only way I could stop the show was to start it up and then shut down. Didn't get the whole show anymore, but twice since then got the mini-lite show. Have switched away from AUTO mode on the light switch, but I don't think you should have to...the switch is there for you to use, right?
Can understand your reluctance to post...I was 2 blocks from this tragedy, and most if not all of the horror. I am torn in half by this.......I hate watching what the TV is showing, but I'm drawn to it like a moth to a flame.....looks like I won't be going back to work next week...I have to call a toll free number tomorrow night and see whats up.....

300Michael, we should meet at the AZ Mills. There is a Krispy Kreme Dounuts there and I owe a box of them to SDMike and his wife for the Las Vegas advice.

Also, I love the Claim Jumper resturant there! Great eats and huge portions!!!! Me and SDmike would need to take a bike ride after eating there!

I also have the temp problem. They tried reprogramming the computer but it didnt help. Then they replace the control head and blend door actuator. Still the same problem. Someone here also had the problem and though it might be where the ouside sensor is located. It may be picking up the temp on the pavement and under hood area instead of the ambient air temperature. Dont know if I will complain again. Wonder if replacing the outside sensor may help? Let me know if they solve yours.

Do any others here have this overhead temp reading problem?

I had my 2000 in the 5* this week with the same light thing and a new driver door window regulator. The 5* has decided to replace the body control module. At times mine will sit there all locked up with the interior lights going on and off on its own. To-night is one of those times.

    We will see what happens.

I was interested in this, too, because when I was car shopping the only thing I liked about the Acura more than the M was it had a $2000 optional color talking nav system. After I bought my M I saw that Chrysler offered that one, but it didn't look as good as the Acura. After checking Ebay, I found you could buy a Garmin Talking Street Pilot III with color display for $700, new. The advantage of this is it's portable, so you can take it with you on trips where you are driving something other than your M. I haven't bought one yet, but I want to. What do you think about this?
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
I'm not sure about how the sensor system is put together, but it seems to me that the blend door actuator would be used to control inside temperature based on...uh...inside temperature, not the readings at the bumper. My problem doesn't seem to be the placement of the sensor, as up until a couple of weeks ago it read fine. My problem is that the temperature displayed never changes...unless the car sits for a while and it finds a new "permanent" and incorrect reading next time I turn the car on.

Just checking in. Still in NYC. I'm in Staten Island now. The WTC area is still a mess! I think I saw AV, but I'm not sure. I saw someone with a bandage around his head, he kinda looked like him from a distance, but I was in a cop car at the time, so I couldn't stop. Yesterday, I was able to go with my aunt to within 1 block of ground zero. Man what a site. All I can say is I hope we make the place where these bad guys live look worse then this area!!!! I emailed a slideshow someone emailed me on this whole thing to a few people. I hope they will forward it to other 300Mers. It history afterall. I just didn't have anyone's address expect for the 300M club guys. I need to get batteries for my camara to upload the many pictures I have taken from around ground zero. Maybe sometime during the week. I have to report to work at 50 Broad street tommorrow. That's next to the NY stock Exchange, about 3 block south of the WTC. That's a mess too! They are cleaning it up though after all it's wall street. Yesterday was something. Seeing all the rescue workers up close working on that pile of rubble. One seen I will never forget is (it's graphic!) a few workers pulling out a severed arm, & leg! I think they weren't from the same body either. There was also this coroners van that was loaded with body bags. Smelled too! Seems to me more bodies have been pulled out then the 180 or so they say on TV. There were a few of those vans. It's just a SICK seen. God Bless AV. I don't think I could handle pulling body's out like that. I'm supposed to go back to FL during the week. Tommorrow is going to be hard at work up here. I am the system adminstrator/network engineer of an electronic daytrading firm. When that bell rings at 9:30am I hope the market doesn't crash!

I know alot of Americans are upset about what happened and want revenge, but we also have to be considerate of human life. The people who did this may think of what they did as great and whoever is hurt or dead got what they deserved. Americans look at it as innocent people dying.
Now, when we go "whereever" we are going to retaliate, we are going to kill people. We will more than likely be proud of our works, especially if we get "whoever" we think was behind the attacks here. Just keep in mind, there are innocent people "there" too. So, when we look at the aftermath of what happened here and feel pain/sorrow..let's not forget that someone is going to go through what we are going through, but maybe alot worse.
All life is precious....be it American or others.
